Hopefully this summer issue of the Tangmere News finds you looking forward to the lifting of lockdown restrictions on the 21st June and the returning to some form of normality. The use of the village centre for the administration of the Covid vaccinations has been extremely valuable to so many and now we look forward to the return of community groups, commercial bookings and village events. During March we said goodbye to Tina one of our distributors who moved out of the village and welcomed Barbara who moved into Tangmere and took over her delivery. The Tangmere News distribution team tries to pair up distributors to delivery areas near to where they live. Most deliver to their road or an area nearby. At the moment we are looking specifically for people to deliver to Garland Square, Copper Beech Drive and Tamar Way. If you would like to join the invaluable team of distributors and help to deliver the Tangmere News please email the editor@tangmere-news.co.uk

will start on Monday We hope to remove all the remaining rules that are stopping people from getting together.

if all goes well. Nightclubs will open and larger events will be able to take place.

We normally meet at Tangmere Village Centre on Tuesday afternoons, 3.30pm and Friday mornings at 10.30am. Unfortunately, currently our classes remain suspended due to the pandemic and Tangmere Vaccination Centre. As soon as we are able to resume I shall contact participants and anyone who has shown an interest in coming along - everyone welcome. For further information text or call Pam on 07941120041 2

The Youth Club has received this years funding from Tangmere Parish Council and Clarion Futures and will use it to pay for the services of Sussex Clubs for Young People (SCYP), an organisation that supplies qualified youth workers to local youth clubs. We welcome John and Naima (SCYP) who will be running the youth sessions over the next coming months at the recreation ground, weather permitting. The Juniors (9 years+) meet at 4:30pm on Tuesdays for just over an hour of fun and games, finishing at 5:45pm. The youth leaders are then available from just after 6pm for the seniors to meet and participate in an organised activity or just chat. Once the vaccination centre in the village centre is decommissioned and the centre becomes available for the youth club to take up residence again, indoor activities will commence. If you are in interested in finding out more about what Tangmere youth club can offer the young people of the area or whether you would like to help either as a volunteer helper or on the management committee please get in touch by emailing youthclub.tangmere@gmail.com

Tangmere Flower Club Diary Dates: June and July meetings cancelled The date when we can resume Flower Club Meetings is still unknown and depends on many factors, including when the Village Centre can be used. We can almost see the light at the end of the tunnel and are excited about the future. We have planned a programme of talks, demonstrations, workshops, plant sales and an outing for when we can meet again! We hope that all our members are well and vaccinated now at least once. Hoping that lots of you will come and join us either as a member or a drop in visitor, we would be pleased to welcome you to our friendly club when we can meet again .

Community Wardens Now we are slowly coming out of lockdown and getting some of our (previously taken for granted) freedoms back we hope you have been able to see some of your friends and family in your gardens or even maybe a pub lunch. It is lovely to finally start feeling positive albeit a little cautious. Step three (which is due to come in on or after Monday 17 May) will mean:

 Restrictions on meeting others outdoors will be lifted.  The rule of six people or two households will apply when meeting indoors and will remain under review as to whether this is safe to increase. Sadly we have to once again report about the amount of litter that is being left on the recreation field particularly around the skate park and MUGA this includes smashed bottles which pose a danger to both people and animals. Most of the rubbish is sweet wrappers, crisps packets and plastic bottles and cans. We have been going regularly to the area to ask our young people to make sure they put their rubbish in one of the many bins or take it home with them. This area has to be litter picked almost every day and this is not acceptable could I please appeal to parents to ask their children to make sure they put any rubbish in the bins provided? Everyone should dispose of their rubbish correctly. Littering is actually a criminal offence for which you can receive a fine. Tangmere green is such a lovely space where people can enjoy being outdoors either using the facilities or just having a stroll but the amount of litter really impacts on that enjoyment and it Dawn White Gareth Jones dwhite@chichester.gov.uk just simply shouldn’t be a gjones@chichester.gov.uk 07768 210358 problem. 07768 202356

In the meantime the parish council will be pursuing other aspects of their Neighbourhood Plan, specifically the plans for the Allotments. The Neighbourhood Plan policy 6 is to consolidate all the existing allotments onto a new site in the field alongside Church Lane and to provide for the new allotments arising from the new development in the same field. This has the advantage of providing all the village allotment facilities in one central location, as well as supporting the peaceful setting of St. Andrew’s Church. All allotment holders will be invited to get involved in planning the layout and design for the new site, and as soon as possible an informal meeting will be held where all issues can be discussed and plans prepared. Many residents will have had their Covid 19 vaccination at Tangmere, and now residents are getting their second

tainty yet as to when the centre will resume its use as a community facility, many user groups are keen to return to the near normality of attending events in the centre One date that has been booked into the diary is the week-end of the 25th and 26th September, when the Tangmere Village Fete will be held. The plan is to hold a traditional fete on the Saturday and a village picnic and cricket match on the Sunday. For those who would like to get involved in the planning of any of the events, we are holding a meeting at the Village Centre on Saturday 12th June @10am. If you are unable to attend but would still like to be involved please email andrew@clearspot.me.uk I understand that the new bund around the recreation field has claimed its first success as a deterrent. Reports that I have indicate that a convoy of potential unwanted visitors had been put off from staying in our village, and had moved on to easier pickings. The grass may have taken some time to establish itself, but the substance of the bund has now proved its true value.

Tangmere Dental Care Time to look to the future & stay healthy! Restrictions are easing and it seems there is some good reasons to smile as hopefully the last lockdown is coming to an end. We have been working largely to help people with problems avoid serious health issues, but now we are coming full circle and these times have definitely proved that it is better to prevent disease than to wait for it to happen and then treat it. IF YOU HAVE ANY CONCERNS REGARDING YOUR DENTAL HEALTH PLEASE CONSIDER BOOKING A CHECK-UP BACK WITH YOUR REGULAR DENTIST. EVEN IF YOU ATTEND ELSEWHERE! 

YOUR SMILE COULD DEPEND ON IT AS DENTAL DISEASE LEVELS ARE ON THE INCREASE! Since June 2020 we have been working to strict protocols which have been effective as there have been no staff or patients reporting any possible contacts or transmission from the practice.

Consistent with easing of restrictions we have completed and are continuing the following actions: 1) All appropriate staff have been fully vaccinated. 2) All staff are undertaking twice weekly lateral flow Covid tests. 3) We will continue using higher level PPE where appropriate. 4) Continuing with Social distancing and mask wearing inside. 5) Additional time is being allowed for extra clean-down between patients. 6) We continue to use additional barriers and air purification systems. 7) Free Triage phone calls and remote contact with patients sending photographs by email for us to give advice and prioritise clinical time. We are reducing and stopping the following 1) Extra Covid mitigation fees are ending for “fallow” time or extra PPE. 2) Day before Covid-screening phone calls are stopping on most routine appointments as it is now common knowledge NOT to attend if you have symptoms or have come into contact with anyone who has have recently been Covid 19 positive or advised to self-isolate. 3) At the door temperature checks are being discontinued as research shows this is not necessary. 4) The need to leave immediately after any work has been done is being removed, so you can now stop at reception to book your next appointment again. 5) Reducing ineffectual PPE to limit extra plastic waste. 6) Restricted use of Patient toilets is being lifted, but you will be asked to collect antiseptic wipe from reception to wipe down anything you may touch and place it in the provided bin. I was honoured to be re-elected to serve another term as your local Police & Crime Commissioner. It is a responsibility that I take extremely seriously and I look forward to continuing to deliver on the priorities that matter most to people across our county. Working closely with Chief Constable Jo Shiner, we will make sure that Sussex Police addresses the Government’s new policing measures to tackle homicide, serious violence, drug supply, neighbourhood violence and cybercrime, as well as continuing to recruit even more officers and PCSOs to increase frontline policing. Locally, I will also drive a relentless focus on tackling anti-social behaviour; on business crime and rural crime - including pet theft; on making the roads safer for residents; supporting even more victims of crime; and working with partners to reduce re-offending. I remain committed to delivering for all Sussex residents and making sure your concerns and ideas are heard and articulated. The listening starts this week as my new programme of consultations has launched with parishes and towns, along with my Talk Sussex conversation moving online. More news on this next week. I look forward to continuing my strong effective working relationship with the force, building on the successes already achieved - cutting crime and making Sussex an even safer place to live and work for all.

Cracking down on pet theft Yesterday I attended the inaugural meeting of the Government’s Pet Theft Taskforce to represent the 125,000 people who took part in my recent national survey on dog theft, voicing their concerns about this rising crime type. I heard presentations of evidence from leading experts who came together to better understand the scale and impact of pet theft. What is already clear from my discussions with fellow PCCs and police leaders is that data sharing and analysis will be central to support an improved police response to this crime. I want to reassure residents that we will be working to make police and partners better informed and equipped to tackle the opportunists and organised criminals involved in dog theft and puppy farming. With more meetings of the Taskforce ahead it is too soon to say what recommendations will emerge but it was reassuring to hear that there are already technical measures and processes which could be imKaty Bourne OBE plemented or improved. 8

What a Wonderful World! This term the children at Tangmere Primary Academy are all working on the whole school theme – ‘What a Wonderful World’. Throughout the term the children will be exploring a range of different ‘worlds’/ habitats which they will be comparing and contrasting. The Nursery class started their journey be looking at the beautifully illustrated book ‘What a Wonderful world’ by Tim Hopgood. The children have enjoyed exploring a range of globes and maps and investigating the school grounds. They have been looking at the journeys that different characters make within the stories; Handa’s Surprise, We’re going on a Bear Hunt, The train Ride and The Lion Hunt. In Reception class the children are comparing and contrasting the different habitats found within different bodies of water- spending time looking at what lives and grows within the school pond area compared with what can be found at the beach and what lives within the sea.

Tangmere Strategic Development Location (SDL) - Update from Countryside Properties Chichester District Council’s Planning Committee have approved the Outline planning application for the Tangmere SDL, which will bring forward up to 1,300 new homes, 30% being affordable, with a primary school and a number of exciting new community and commercial facilities at Tangmere – along with significant areas of public open space that make up around half of the site, including allotments and a community orchard. In regards to the Compulsory Purchase Order in respect of the Tangmere SDL, the Council has been notified that a virtual local public inquiry will take place in September, commencing on Tuesday 7th September at 10am. Ahead of this, a Case Management Conference will be held virtually on Tuesday 20th July at 10am with the Inspector to discuss procedural matters ahead of the inquiry itself. Further details are available on the Council’s website: www.chichester.gov.uk/article/31554/Tangmere-strategic-developmentlocation The Countryside team would like to take this opportunity to thank all those who have continued to engage with us over the past two years, and for all the feedback that has been shared which has helped us in shaping our plans. We look forward to continuing the conversation as we progress with the detailed designs and Reserved Matters planning applications following the outcome of the Compulsory Purchase process. We will share information regarding future consultation opportunities in due course both in the Tangmere News and on our website at www.countrysidetangmere.co.uk. 12

Message from Practice Manager Joanna Reiss On behalf of the surgery, can I say a big thank you for your support and understanding over the past year. The majority of patients have worn their masks, queued outside reception and collected their prescriptions from the dispensary window without complaint. This has enabled us to maintain normal service where possible. Smears, blood tests and annual reviews have been carried out and patients who need to be seen face to face have been accommodated. At the beginning of the vaccine rollout, the telephone calls were endless and the staff were frustrated that they were unable to provide any answers. The press knew what was happening before we did! Because Tangmere was one of the vaccine hubs, patients were under the impression that we were managing it and so were receiving calls from all the local surgeries. The phone lines are quieter now and second vaccines are nearly completed for cohorts 1-6. Sadly there is a backlog at the hospital and there is little that we can do to expedite appointments. Can we please ask patients not to call dispensary to ask if medication is ready. We do ask that patients allow 5 working days to be on the safe side. If you have a question, it is quicker to email. Dr Blair Dunlop has joined us this week. He will be here four days each week. We are very pleased to welcome him to the clinical team. We are planning a carers event on 9th June at 12.30, weather permitting. Further information will be coming out in due course. Vaccinations On behalf of the Friends of TMC, we would like to thank Dr. Chiswick for the smooth organisation of the vaccination site at the Village Centre under her direction. Walk – June 15 The next walk will be on Tuesday June 15, meeting at TMC at 10.00am. Thereafter monthly walks on the third Tuesday of the month will be arranged. Routes are decided by walkers. Please phone Pat Norman if you would like to join us

Giving patients a say – If you are concerned about your treatment at the practice, please contact Gloria 532558.

Surgery Hours Morning surgery runs from 08:30 to 12:00 each day, afternoon surgery from 14:00 to 18:00.

Contact the friends by emailing – friendsoftmc2014@gmail.com or phone Pat Norman 776991 or Margaret Blackman 771486. 14

Throughout the third lockdown the Tangmere community garden has been a lifeline for people living in and around Tangmere . Folk have come individually to work on small areas of the plot, they’ve been digging ,hoeing ,weeding and planting potatoes and many seeds as well as watching nature unfurling into spring. Listening to the birdsong whilst you work is very uplifting. Recently Saturday morning has seen a group of likeminded friends come together to do some cultivation and to take home the rewards of their labours ; we have enjoyed spring cabbages, leeks, spinach ,parsley and the last of last year’s squashes and pumpkins, so lots of delicious soup! Now it’s asparagus season which we are all enjoying, and at last there’s been some rain which will mean more abundant crops. We also are brave enough now to put the kettle on and enjoy a fresh coffee or a tea and some delicious pastries. We sit at great distances from each other in the open air and have benefited from

some interesting and sustaining conversation. Young and old(er) members take part, our youngest being four years old and a dab hand at picking the dandelions to stop them seeding, and our old(er) are really good at a little gentle hoeing.... there’s something for everyone to do! We look forward to seeing you too! 17

Most mornings, I walk through the churchyard at St Andrew’s after opening the church. I am fascinated to see the life cycle of plants through the year from apparent death in winter to a new life in spring. I suppose that this cycle of life and death is more relevant in the churchyard than it is in my garden. It makes me think about the churchyard and what it means to the people of Tangmere. As I look around the churchyard and see the graves and memorials of those who have gone before, I am reminded that each gravestone and memorial is a there because someone who was loved has died. We may not know much about them, but when each stone was put in place, the life of a man or woman was remembered in some small way.

about which I know nothing but still known to family members who loved and cared for the people buried there. It is part of our on-going obligation to keep the churchyard looking good and a place where everyone can come and find peace with their loved ones or just come and find peace. As a church, we undertake t maintain the churchyard to the best of our ability. As such, the members of the church family meet up on the second Saturday of the month at 10:00 for a couple of hours to tidy up the bits of the churchyard that need it. If you would like to join us, come along on one of our working Saturdays, bring a pair of gloves and we will find you something to do.

As part of keeping the graveyard safe for all to use, we occasionally carry out a “topple test” to make sure that gravestones are not likely to fall on anyone. We would like to put those gravestones back up and safe. In order to so this, we need to reach out to the families of those buried there so that we can get their permission to do the work. If you are connected As I walk round, I think of those people with any of these people, or know somewho’s lives I knew from taking part in one who is, can you please get in touch their funeral. Tangmere WI With the slow lifting of Government guildlines we are thrilled to announce that sWIfts (Tangmere WI) are finally planning on meeting up again, on Tuesday 1st June. This will be an informal outside meeting at the President’s house. There will be no speaker but just a chance to catch up over a “bring and share” supper. We are very pleased to have welcomed 2 new members over the last few weeks, but more will be very welcome. We are a very friendly group of local ladies who love to share stories/ skills / and support during our monthly meetings on the first Tuesday of the month. We normally meet at the Village Centre, but during the vaccine programme we will find other venues until able to use the building again. This years membership has been reduced to £22.40 (to reflect the fact we were not able to meet for most of last year). This does also include full membership to the National Women’s Institute. If you are interested in knowing more please free to contact the President Clare on either 07908556245 or email Tangmerewi@gmail.com . 19

Today I sat in a Café in town having a cup of coffee with one of our new Directors that joined us last year. We have spoken many times and share many passions and yet I hadn’t seen this lady in person even once since we took her on to our Board of Directors. There was such a mix of emotions about this get together, the nerves of meeting someone in person for the first time, mixed with the anxiety of being out at a coffee shop when it has been so long since we have been able to do these things and the joy of the interaction with another human being, especially one who so clearly shares some of my own passions. The connection from sitting with her in person was so much stronger, for me, and so lovely that I could have stayed all day. Sadly, it had to come to an end but there is hope for a next time. I start with this story because on June 8th at 9:30 at Oving Village Hall Positive Routes are starting up a Chill and Chat café to offer that space for people to come together, chat and renew old connections and make new ones. Lockdown may have left you feeling isolated and alone and here is an opportunity for you to know that you aren’t. Whether you are from Oving, Tangmere or any of the surrounding villages come and have a cuppa and chat with new and old friends. There will also be a therapist on hand should you have something more that you want to talk about. We will also need volunteers to support our cafe so please do get in touch with us on 07872 052158 or on info@positiveroutes.co.uk if you can offer your time. UK Harvest will be joining us every fortnight to run a pop-up food pantry where for £2.50, you can choose a from a selection of food and take away a bag full. This is mainly surplus foods provided by the local stores and shops and helps to reduce food waste. We would like to thank UK Harvest for their partnership and Clarion Futures (part of Clarion Housing group) who are supporting us to run this and will be looking to arrange for housing officers or employment and training officers to join us at the café from time to time to answer questions and queries that their residents may have. The café will be held at Oving Jubilee Hall every Tuesday morning from 9:30 – 11:30. We look forward to seeing you there! Michelle Stone Director of Positive Routes

Neighbourhood Watch The Sussex Police have launched an operation to crackdown on anti-social behaviour and criminality and therefore have extra officers available to respond where it is deemed to be necessary. There does seem to have been an increase in ASB in Tangmere and it is very important to report it whenever you experience it. To my knowledge there are still incidences of cars being entered at night, sheds being broken into and property being stolen. Also there is a group of young people whizzing around the village on electric scooters, weaving in and out between cars and pedestrians. This is currently illegal and should be reported when seen. The Community Garden Shed was broken into yet again and a 3 piece multi tool was stolen. I know this sort of equipment is easy to sell on at Car Boot sales. Do lock your sheds and try to keep valuable items in a safe place. There seems to be an increase in litter, please use the bins where provided or take your rubbish home. It is unpleasant when strewn around and can be a danger to wildlife. Wishing you all a happy summer, now the rules are relaxing, but still stay safe. Kate Beach 532505 * * * *

Times past …………. Number 14 Those who are familiar with events in the village will remember the times when these photos and press notes were in the news. There was a time when the post office was located in Boxgrove Stores and Tangmere residents had the problem of crossing the A27. A few residents will remember John Stapleford, chair of the parish council, who was committed to the village facilities and worked hard for improvements. Well things moved on and the post office in Boxgrove closed. The good news was that a new counter was opened in Tangmere’s village shop. So some success for the folk who lobbied for the change. Then change came and the village shop closed and the post office closed as well. This was a concern to many who relied on the parcel and other services run by the post system administration. Many had hoped that the post office would move to the Bader Arms when it was converted into the CO-OP village store. We remain optimistic and hope this will allow the village to have a post office fit for the new housing which is being built. During the lock down period many folk have discovered new walks and interesting features in our immediate area. The Billy Fiske memorial window in Boxgrove was spotted by one rambler recently when visiting the priory church. Other ramblers have seen the war graves in our parish church and commented on how well the gardens surrounding this grade 1 listed building are kept. A vote of thanks must go to the volunteer gardeners and Fr Trevor. This collage was created a few years ago but the spring gardens at St Andrews Church are a worthwhile visit. There is a history project for somebody to take up. Each of the graves is a memorial to a named individual; it would be nice to have the historical record of each headstone prepared and then lodged in the museum. Sadly the control tower remains in a poor state, one can hope that it will be refurbished and given a new purpose as part of the new Tangmere village developments. 22
