Welcome to the August/ September issue of the Tangmere News which shows the play area at Dukes Meadow, the second picture in a series which illustrates the recreational areas in the village.

Last issue was of the play park in Bader Heights. The Hub at the village centre is looking great now that it has been redecorated and has been welcoming 40+ children between the ages of 8 and 14 years since the beginning of May. The Tangmere Aviation Museum are having their family day on the 4th August, which should be fun for the whole family with both indoor and outdoor children’s activities. The indoor activities include designing and colouring squadron badges, making The mobile library serving the Bognor Regis and Chichester areas which is operated by West Sussex County Council has been permanently taken off the road.

After a series of mechanical failures the mobile library based in Bognor Regis, which serves the rural south of West Sussex, has been deemed ‘no longer roadworthy’ and the decision has been made to take it off the road.

The library which visited Tangmere on Friday afternoons, firstly outside the school and then at the village centre carpark, will be missed by many but users have been informed and reassured they will not face any overdue letters for items they currently have on loan and are being encouraged to return books to their local libraries instead.

The county council said that ‘all options for the future are being reviewed’.

We had a most successful visit from our “twinners” from Hermanville-sur-mer. 34 French friends came over on Friday evening 14th June to stay with 15 English families. On Saturday various activities were organised including a session of croquet at the beautifully situated club at Duncton, and visits to West Dean gardens and the Weald and Downland museum. In the evening we had our usual dinner dance at the Village Centre complete with a DJ. On the Sunday we held a lunch at the Village Centre before the rush to say au revoir several times over and allow our French friends to catch the return ferry. All in all, an excellent exchange which further enhanced the bond between our two villages, and we look forward to our next visit to Hermanville in June 2020.

Twinning Association

Our next activity will be a walk and pub meal on Saturday 7th September. If you would like more Information about the Society and its activities please contact Matt Deeble (697436) or Alison Coote (773276) We are hoping to keep the youth club running over the summer while Alex and Keely, the youth workers from SCfYP (Sussex Clubs for young people), have a well earned rest. Thanks to one parents, Leigh who is a football coach, we are able to offer football training on Tuesdays from 56pm. We would also like to offer some cricket nets especially for the older youngsters. Juniors (8+) 4:45 to 6:15pm and Seniors (11+) 6:15 to 7:30pm.

Tangmere Village Centre If you have an event taking place over the coming months or something special next year and as yet you have not booked a venue, why not consider the Tangmere Village Centre.

Big Thank You to all of you that attended our Garden Open Afternoon held on the 23rd June. Although no Sunshine it was warm and dry. We held a Tombola and a Raffle which all who attended tried their luck and I believe everyone came away with something. We hope you enjoyed the cakes with your cuppa. All that attended contributed to the £167.79 raised for funds. A BIG THANK YOU to you all.

We would also like to say a big welcome to some new much needed members to the garden following our open afternoon. Welcome to Tim Kitchen and Family and Susanne Koelmel we hope you enjoy your time at the Garden and make some wonderful friendships.

We have been very busy harvesting Gooseberries, Tayberries, Black and Red Currents and Cherries Galore. Many of us have been busy making Jam’s and Chutney’s with all theses wonderful fruits.

Our monthly bring and share supper clubs have started again and we are enjoying sharing dishes and a glass or two of wine with friends in the garden.

We are always keen to gain new members to the garden as there are always plenty to do and plenty of produce to share. Tangmere Strategic Development Location (SDL) Update from Countryside Properties Countryside Properties would like to thank everyone who attended the community drop in sessions it held in Tangmere Village Centre on Monday 24th June and Tuesday 25th June. The events saw representatives from Countryside and its professional project team display the latest thinking on the evolving framework masterplan for new homes and community infrastructure at Tangmere, and gave us the opportunity to discuss a wide range of issues with local residents.

The feedback received at and following the drop in sessions has been shared with the full project team, and is being taken into account as the framework masterplan proposals evolve.

For those who were unable to attend these events, the information boards and emerging framework masterplan that were on display can be viewed on our website at www.countryside-tangmere.co.uk/masterplan-consultation. Although initial comments were requested by 9th July, the online feedback will remain accessible over the summer and Countryside would encourage all residents to make their views known as plans for Tangmere progress.

Technical work on the framework masterplan is continuing and will be submitted to Chichester District Council in the autumn, followed by the submission of an outline planning application before the end of the year.

Countryside will be holding further community consultation after the summer where we will be able to share updated plans and proposals for the SDL. A public exhibition is planned for Thursday 26th September in the Village Centre and Countryside will also be attending the Village Fair on Saturday 21st September, where members of the project team will be happy to answer any questions you may have and listen to your feedback. Further information will be sent out via newsletter closer to the time and updates will also be available on our project website. Allotments Report

The Tangmere allotments are in full production with excellent crops of fruit and early vegetables despite some very dry spells since the Spring.. On 6th July we had a plant swap with a bbq after, which was enjoyed by all who attended. We intend to have another event like this before the Autumn chills set in.

We are pleased to see so many wild birds visiting the plots and we all seem to have a tame robin and pair of blackbirds. They have ideal nesting sites in the adjacent bushes and trees.

With reduced use of chemicals we are seeing a lot more minibeast activity on the plots which is interesting for children and adults alike.

We have 1 vacant plot available – others are in the process of having agreements signed and folk starting on them.

History Group

Tangmere Local History Group offers a programme of speakers and outings on subjects of historical interest, particularly in Tangmere and Chichester, but also further afield. Visitors are always very welcome to our meetings.

Our next event is an afternoon visit to Edes House, in Chichester, on Thursday 12th September. We will have refreshments on arrival, followed by a guided tour of the house. This Grade 1 Georgian mansion was in recent times occupied by the offices of WSCC; it has now been fully restored, and is used for weddings, and other functions.

Chairman’s Report I walked my dogs over to the airfield this evening (16th July) and witnessed a most disgraceful display of criminal trespass. Over 20 traveller caravans and dozens of people were abusing the private land and causing upset and damage without any risk of being held to account.

There is something wrong with our laws that allow a criminal trespass to be assisted and condoned by the police, and the criminals being able to trash community property.

The parish council objects to the illegal trespass but finds that the law facilitates such criminal behaviour.

The parish council is not the owner of the airfield, so is unable to take any action to relieve the insult and upset that such criminal actions inflicts on the local residents.

Something needs to change in order to impose the rule of law regarding travellers that will bring their rights back in line with the rights of law abiding citizens.

At the council meeting on 11th July there were a large number of residents who came to contribute to the discussion about the planning application for glass-houses outside the horticultural development area in Tangmere.

The parish council’s position was consistent with its view regarding any application on the disused airfield: we support appropriate development in line with the HDA policy, and resist applications that are outside the rules.

The Parish Council objected to the proposed development.

At the same meeting the council approved a funding package that will see the village youth club that meets in the Hub (new name for the youth hall) being partially funded by the village. Seeing the number of young residents attending the club this week justifies the allocation of funds. All residents should show their support for the Hub which is beginning to deliver funds to secure its future.

The master plan for the strategic site, west of Tangmere, which will see up to 1300 additional homes added to the village, is being developed with the assistance of the council. There has been a consultation event, run by the developer that attracted 60 residents who gave their views regarding aspects of the emerging plan.

The council has promised to hold a public meeting during August to seek resident’s views regarding the substantive issues surrounding the plan, which are:  East West connectivity between the current village and the new development.  Location and size of any community facility arising from the development.  Housing development in the field north of St Andrews Church.

Tangmere WI At our June meeting we welcomed Doug Eaton a professional speaker who once played in Liverpool’s cavern club alongside the Beatles. He spoke about a wide variety of strange inventions most of which we decided we could well live without.

In July we spent a beautiful summer evening in a member’s garden enjoying good food, a few drinks and each other’s company.

There is no formal meeting in August but we will be taking part in events organised by West Sussex federation. Some members will be taking part in the federation quiz, others are joining a tractor tour of Barfoots farm in Bognor.

Regular meetings resume in September with a card making workshop. We are planning ahead for our 30th birthday celebration in November.

Katy Bourne, our Police and Crime Commissioner, has recently spoken about the increasing number of community groups that are being formed on Facebook or other social media sites. I would like to endorse this as an excellent way of disseminating information around local policing and other local issues. I would like to welcome to Tangmere our two newest estates, Bader Heights (Hangar Drive) and Dukes Meadow who I believe are already up and running with resident associations. I wish them all the best and would like to support them in any way that I can.

Neighbourhood Watch

This week I was notified by a resident of a very nasty telephone scam they had just received. It purported to be from HMRC telling the recipient in an extremely aggressive manner that if they didn’t phone a specific phone number there would be very unpleasant consequences. It is very sad that there are so many very clever scams constantly evolving by very clever criminals, they come in all sorts of forms, phone calls, emails, letters even cold calling. If you receive any of these and you feel something is wrong, please just ignore or put the phone down and do not click on any links in an email, trust your instinct and do not respond.

Community Wardens

Well I don’t want to speak to soon, but we have seen a marked improvement over the last few weeks with the problems we were having around the play areas in the village, which is great news, hopefully this trend will continue throughout the summer holidays.

As I am sure you ae all aware, as I am writing this we have an encampment of travellers on the Airfield, We have been actively monitoring the situation and engaging with them to try and minimise disruption to the community. We have received several complaint regarding vandalism, fly tipping and Anti Social Behaviour. We do listen to your concerns and pass them on to the relevant authorities so they can be acted on.

As we are having lovely weather at the moment, obviously we all want to throw open the windows and doors to let that fresh air flow through the house, but please be aware of opportunist thieves, there have been cases locally of possessions being stolen through open windows and doors, so please just be aware of the security of your home.

We will be out and about all over the school holidays so please say hello if you see us, it is always lovely to have a chat with you, and as ever please don’t hesitate to call us if you feel we could help.

Comments from your District and County Councillor Recent unauthorised occupations of land in our area have thrown up again the issue of National Legislation not being fit for purpose in protecting the interests of the settled population, landowners and the environment. The complex legal process of getting Court orders to remove illegal occupiers and the high, Human Rights driven, bar the Police have to comply with before they can direct removals, is leading to continued incursions and lengthy impacts. Among these impacts are the amount of waste left behind and the unwanted attentions of door to door landscape traders looking for cash in hand work. It is patently unfair that some are able to get free access to land for both holiday and work purposes, something the majority cannot and would not do, and then expect cash strapped Local Authorities to clear up after them.

Scams are an increasing issue as criminals seek to make relatively risk free money from the unprepared, unwary and vulnerable. “If it’s too good to be true, it probably is” has never been a more relevant saying.

the Horticultural Development Area (HDA) is under consideration (19/01525/FUL), as is one for large business units on the last vacant area in the City Fields Business Park (19/01675/FUL). The Madestein Glass/ Pack house application (17/01699/FUL – within the HDA) awaits final sign off of the S106 Agreement. Southern Water is also now busy putting in its strategic sewer and pumping station (S of the Museum).

All this is in addition to the Strategic Development on the West side of the village. The issue of what transport connectivity along Malcolm Road (and into the SDL) there will be is generating much debate. The consequences of enabling all vehicle movements along this line seem to be at odds with creating a village main street where people can mix and meet without being dominated by the car (note the popularity of pedestrian precincts), as well as promoting car use as opposed to walking and cycling within the village. Whether it is best to have one or two community centres is also an issue.

Though the Neighbourhood Plan may indicate a new facility in the SDL, the operational/management/efficiency implications, as well as long term flexibility issues that are being raised cast doubt as to whether a two centre strategy is appropriate. A one centre strategy (at the existing centre) would create a flexible and efficient hub next to, a still large, open space where the whole village could meet and mix.

Summer Fun at Tangmere Primary Academy It has been a busy time this term at Tangmere Primary Academy.

Sport Day - The children enjoyed joining in with and showing off their talents in a range of races at sports day. Thank you to all the families that were able to help us celebrate and enjoy the sunshine at the family picnic.

We were all very excited when the Red Arrows came to say hello. This fitted in nicely with the work that the Nursery children have been doing on transport.

The Year 6 children did an amazing job entertaining us all on their Enterprise Day. They managed to raise an impressive amount of money to fund their Year 6 activity day out and end of term celebrations.

Starting School at Tangmere Primary Academy For parents that have children starting in our Nursery and Reception Classes in September it is an exciting time with lots of things to think about. It is a big event in a child life, but as a parent what can you do to make this transition as smooth as possible?

Here are a few top tips: Talk to your child about starting school – share books and stories about starting school, discuss the things that will be new or different.  Children often get very tired when they first start school. Make sure that they have time to relax and rest after school and work on getting into a good bedtime routine so the children get an early night.  Help your child become independent at school by encouraging them to have a go at getting dressed on their own- practicing doing up and undoing buttons and zips as well as putting on socks and tights and coats.  Make sure all your child’s clothes are clearly labelled/ named (including their shoe.  If your child has a packed lunch make sure they have healthy food that they are used to eating and only give them an amount that you feel confident they will be able to eat (as they have a restricted time to eat up before going to play). Keep an eye on how much they eat each day and how hungry they are when they get home as it will help you to judge how much and what to put in their lunchbox.  Help your child practice going to the toilet on their own.  Make a regular time to share stories and books together. Show your child how important reading is by them seeing you read and talk about books/ comics/ papers.

Talk about numbers, shapes, colours, letters, rhymes that you see or hear when you are out together or at home.  Each week a newsletter is posted on the TPA website under your child’s class to explain what they will be working on that week. Talk to your child about this and talk about the meanings of specific topic language that they may not have come across before.  Ask your child questions which encourage them to think about and work out simple problems.  Finally, we do loads of outdoor learning so ensure that they have suitable clothes for all weathers and some spare clothes for when they get messy.  Most children settle in quickly to school life, but if you do find that they are having difficulties, please do not worry. Spend time listening to your child, and speak to your child’s class teacher to see if together you can find a solution.  We look forward to seeing you all in September for the new school year.

Monday 2nd September is an INSET day so year 1 - year 6 children will be back on Tuesday 3rd September. Parents who have a child starting in the Reception Class will have booked meetings with Mrs Stanley for either the 3rd or 4th September and Reception children will start back on Thursday 5th September.

The Nursery will start back on Monday 9th September.

“The power of one is above all things the power to believe in yourself, often well beyond any latent ability you may have previously demonstrated. The mind is the athlete, the body is simply the means it uses to run faster or longer, jump higher, shoot straighter, kick better, swim harder, hit further, or box better.” ― Bryce Courtenay, The Power of One I have always been an avid reader. When the world around me was confusing as a child I would bury my head in a book and become Alice exploring Wonderland, Susan exploring Narnia or Bilbo Baggins going on his long journey. The written words were one of my comforts. One of the most powerful stories that I read, that has stayed with me for my whole life, was the Power of One by Bryce Courtenay. It inspired in me the start of a determination not to do something just because others did, not to judge others based on what made them different to me instead to celebrate their differences and similarities and that when something doesn’t seem right not to sit, say I can’t do that because I am only 1 person and instead start forming a plan and know that if I stand then others will come with me and I will no longer be just 1 person.

From that teenager who got it wrong regularly, I have been finding my courage, gathering information and making a plan. My own long journey led me to standing on a stage on the 23rd June this year.

I had started as 1 person, finding a way to answer my questions about why the children I was teaching were finding their thoughts so uncomfortable and how to help my own son with his anxiety, finding that the answers that others were giving me were frustrating or impractical. This led me to become a Relax Kids Coach, which then led me to the idea of a community interest company to support others who had these same questions, which led me to meeting Laura and Rachel, who are now my co-directors of Rewire, Inspire 3C C.I.C. and so 1 became 3.

Now back to this stage. I was standing on it to open up the conference that our company had set up to network and signpost the local 16

community to the help and support they could access around them. There were less people than I had hoped and for a day or so my own critical voice in my head told me that I had failed because not many people were there, ignoring the positive feedback that came back to me from those who had attended. Then I remembered The Power of One. I had started as 1, I had become 3 with our company, as I set up the conference I was offered help and support my people around me including Jo Irwin and the Parish Council and we became 10ish and then as I stood on that stage we became a group of around 40, forming a way to support our community. Far from not succeeding, I had increased our group and spoken our joint aim together aloud, I had helped to forge new relationships and to start a conversation that would spread further than that room. So I would like to thank all of those who were involved in setting up the conference, those who gave up their time to give a talk, demonstration or talk at a stand for an event that was exciting, informative and done with true community spirit at heart and for those who bought tickets to come and join us and listen to what we had to say I hope that you took something away with you, whatever that something may be. Just imagine what the next one will be like!

Welcome to new readers!

The next walk will be on Tuesday 20th August along the Chichester Canal. In September the walk will be at Littlehampton on Tuesday 17th.

Future walks will be on the third Tuesday of the month.

Emergency cabinet – Following the Spring Fair we have sufficient funds to purchase a mobile cabinet in which to store emergency equipment required for patients with emergency needs.

This year has been a busy year with some of the young adults being in all three productions. It was hard work for them, especially those that work full time, Well done young players… there were some great reviews for the “Great British Bump off” and the adult production was full of challenges as John was having to navigate a brand new lighting and sound system.

Well done John!

After The production team have decided upon a Panto!!!. It will be a Lazy Bee script called "Once Before Upon a Time”, and involves Snow White and her Prince Charming along with Cinderella & her Prince Charming and their children who wish to marry but the evil witch tries to thwart the proceedings. It involves the dwarfs, Alice in Wonderland, Little Red Riding Hood, Captain Hook and a few others along the way. We need lots of extras to act and help behind the scenes. So please if you have some budding young actors, singers, and dancers let them join, you never know it could be a great experience for them.

Rehearsals starting again Monday 2nd September in the main hall of the village centre, 7-9pm.

Notes from the Rectory As summer is upon us, I think about all of those holidays that I have been on with the family and how they are a reflection of life in general.

There have been holidays that have been so good that it was a struggle to leave the place and people behind and come back to the (relatively) mundane life at home. Other holidays seemed to be a series of disasters with unhappy children and a level of stress that made coming home a relief. There was one of these in particular that was a series of stressful situations, one after the other. We had booked a “cottage� on a farm rather than the usual camping holiday. The cottage was a shabby breeze block construction with furniture that had seen better days - nothing like the brochure! One of the children refused to sleep in the twin beds but would only go to sleep in the double bed. The other child decided that they no longer liked farm animals and wanted nothing to do with them. It rained twice during our week long stay - once for 4 days, a short break of a few hours and then for another three days.

The car blew a head gasket and the only hire car available was half the size of the family car. All in all, not the best holiday we ever had. But we came home, unpacked and settled back into our lives at home. The children slept in their own beds, the sun came out and after a 400 mile round trip, we got the car back. Life returned to normal.

But life is just like that. We have our ups and downs. There are good days and bad days. On the bad days I pray for the strength and courage to get through them and on the good days, I give thanks God So as I prepare for my holiday this year, I hope that it is a good one and I can come back refreshed and ready to go. But if not, I hope that I will be able to laugh about it and maybe turn it into a sermon!

Every other Sunday 9:15am from 9:00am we come together to meet and greet friends and neighbours at 9:10 we settle for quiet contemplation in preparation for the service

St Andrew’s, Oving Services at 11:00 - First Sunday is a short service followed by Holy Communion. Other Sundays are a Holy Communion service.

Times Past……….

In September 1887 Tangmere Village St Andrews Church organised a choir outing.

This was part of a larger event involving other children in Chichester.

The children and their leaders all went by train from Drayton station [now just a rail crossing point] to Barnham Junction where they were counted off and marched over to join the train to Bognor. This account appeared in the village magazine.

Such wonder and excitement for those children who lived at a time when none of the every day things we have today existed.

In October 1897 St Andrews church encouraged young men in the village to take up a trade ………….this notice appeared in the parish magazine at the time.

This idea continues today, in some communities, where training for the new technologies is offered .

Another example is where help and advice is offered for those who need to provide care as a result of a physical or mental disability to a close relative.

New Appeal launched to transform dementia support in West Sussex Local charity Dementia Support has launched a new £1 million Appeal to help fund vital ‘Wayfinders’ to reduce loneliness, give the best quality care, provide hope and support for the whole family affected by dementia.

Every 3 minutes somebody will develop dementia. There are 15,000 people living with dementia in West Sussex, with 5,500 in our local area, but currently the charity can only reach 10%.

The Wayfinder Appeal is being launched to fund more personal advisors and life-changing dementia support services, to enable the charity to reach more families. As a local charity, Dementia Support relies on donations and the generosity of the public.

“A diagnosis of dementia is devastating for most people. At Dementia Support we are here for people when they receive that news. We will help people living with dementia and their families throughout their dementia journey, and our Wayfinders are a crucial part of that journey. They provide essential guidance and emotional support in helping people to live well with dementia.” Sally Tabbner, CEO, Dementia Support Anne found great comfort for herself and her husband Bob when they spoke to a Wayfinder at Dementia Support: “It’s like a game of scrabble where you throw all the letters in the air, that’s what it’s like in Bob’s head with his dementia. … I can’t tell you what a relief it is to have a Wayfinder to talk to, somebody that says, ‘I get it, I know where you’re coming from’.”
