The grant will be used to assist with the funding of audio visitor guides and the redesign of the Museum car park. The work on the car park is scheduled to take place from 23 July and be completed by 20th August 2018. The contractor will endeavour to keep any inconvenience to residents to a minimum.

Spirit FM visits Tangmere Primary Academy We started the half term off with a visit from Spirit FM as part of their Test the Teacher Competition. Mr Grace was the lucky contestant who had 60 seconds to answer a range of general knowledge questions. We were very proud of Mr Grace’s score of 5 questions which placed him at number three on the leader board. To secure his place he then went on to complete a hula-hoop challenge. Unfortunately Mr Grace did not make it to the final, but we are all very proud of his efforts and enjoyed seeing his hula-hooping talents!

We are sometimes a little bit surprised that some in the village are not aware that we are lucky to have one of the best restaurants in the area on the edge of Tangmere.

Cassons on the A27 just to the west of Tangmere Road has been established for nearly 15 years by husband and wife couple Viv (Head Chef) and Cass Casson (Front of House).

Viv has in the past been awarded an accolade of a Michelin Star. Currently it is one of the few restaurants in West Sussex to feature in the major restaurant guides Michelin, AA Restaurant Guide and The Good Food Guide.

It is only open in the evenings (Tuesday to Saturday) and for Sunday lunch. This gives the kitchen brigade the chance to concentrate on the evening a la carte menu and the attention in terms of presentation, detail and flavour is testament to the passion behind those kitchen doors.

The vast majority of the ingredients are sourced from the local area. Viv says it is vital we support local suppliers.

The evening menu usually has six starters, six mains and six desserts and when you look at the menu you have great difficulty choosing as all the choices look delicious.

Sunday Lunch will have a couple of roasts as well as featuring some choices from the a la carte menu.

Every six weeks apart from the summer there are special Gourmet Nights which feature up to ten course Tasting Menus. Over the years there have been nights featuring different cuisines such as Italian, Spanish, Mexican and Indian. There have been special nights which have included reproducing the first class menu from the last night of the Titanic on its 100th anniversary of its sinking, Sixties Nights with the food and music from the time. These nights are great fun and do get booked up quickly.

Viv and her small kitchen brigade can turn their skills to many styles of cooking. However Viv says her roots are firmly in the basics of French cuisine.

The bar features monthly special cocktails and a wine list that is one of the best in the area featuring over 100 old and new world wines.

When you ask Viv and Cass what they are trying to achieve they both agree that they run Cassons as somewhere they would like to come and eat.

The service is professional and unobtrusive; the staff really look as though they enjoy what they are doing.

Cass describes the restaurant. ‘Great food in relaxed surroundings’.

One of the other good things is that the website www.cassonsrestaurant.co.uk is always up to date. So you can savour the menu before you arrive. The website also has all the details about what is going on and some of the special offers that feature throughout the year.

What ever your talent is, if you are over 7 years old and love dancing, singing, acting and dream of being on the stage, now is the time to join your local amateur dramatic society. Tangmere Players has been going for over 25 years and has had a vast number of children and adults join in with it’s many productions since it’s launch.

We have three productions a year, a Young players production in March, an Adult production in May and of course a Pantomime in December. Each production has two performances running over a Friday and Saturday evening and the panto also has a matinee on the Saturday.

We also welcome new members who would rather not be on the stage as we have plenty of things back stage and front of house that need doing.

This year our panto is Cinderella with an 80’s music twist and we are looking for some white mice as well as a pair of ugly sisters.. ….

Sage House, Dementia Support, has been open for a month and has been welcoming its first visitors. The facility provides complete dementia support services under one roof; it has been an exciting month running the hub and starting to deliver dementia support which is much needed in the local area.

The Day Breaks service offers day care for people living with dementia and respite for their families and carers. This has already been popular, and far from being sat in a room all day the groups enjoy themed days around current events e.g. The Royal Wedding, Chelsea Flower Show; they go out and visit the local area, and there are plenty of dementia wellbeing activities at Sage House the group attend: singing, music, art, socialising, exercises.

It has been lovely to see the group enjoying themselves and there are already some cheeky characters developing.

The Wayfinding Service, which offers information and advice for people living with dementia, and their carers and families, has received a steady flow of enquiries. It has been wonderful to support the local community and provide much needed advice and information.

Sage House is also holding Solicitor Clinics with Cameron James Legal and Irwin Mitchell, which will provide legal advice around dementia. For appointment details, please call the office.

Daisy’s Café – the community Café, has proved to be very popular with local residents, employees at local businesses and people living with dementia. The Café is open Monday to Friday, 9am to 3.30pm (hot food stops at 2.30pm) and anyone is welcome to visit and eat in there.

Chairman’s Report The appointment of our new Clerk was only short lived, as Freda Collins decided the challenges of Tangmere were more than she had expected and she resigned at the end of March.

The Council has now appointed Louise Steele as a locum clerk for the period until we can make a more permanent appointment.

The current arrangements with Tina and Louise are working extremely well, and the annual accounts were confirmed by our internal auditor in the required timescale.

We also received the resignation of Matt Gover-Wren, who has found the challenges of fatherhood much more exciting than Parish work, but he has promised to continue fighting for the restoration of the airfield Watch Tower.

Whilst we regret loosing Matt, as he has been a powerhouse of enthusiasm, his commitment to the Watch tower promises to keep him involved with us.

It is therefore very pleasing to see that Matt achieved the crowd-funding target of £10,000 in order to commence the work on protecting the tower for the future generations to remind them of the importance Tangmere played in the defence of Britain in the 1940’s.

We have now started on the 2 major projects that we will be concentrating on this year.

The re-surfacing of the village Centre

car park will remove the unsteady gravel surface and make a more ordered parking provision, as well as looking tidier.

The overhaul of the sound, light and visual facilities in the main hall will bring many opportunities for residents to enjoy activities there, and as it will be funded by developer contributions, there will be no charge against the precept that we call from residents to fund the work.

This year we have agreed the precept at £60,000, which residents will have seen as a part of their council tax demand.

Our contribution remains unchanged over the last few years.

Our Pop-up Café project now will include a regular Saturday opening, on the first Saturday of the month. Please watch out for the signs and pay a visit to this community project, without residents support for it we will not be able to continue making the café available. I know that everyone that has visited over the last 3 events has been impressed by the range and pricing of the menu, and remember it is all run by volunteers at present, so prices are very keen.

I have no update on the progress of the strategic development site to the west of Tangmere, except to confirm that the Parish Council has supported the progress that CDC are making, in the belief that our Neighbourhood plan for the site will form a central element to their plans. Twinning Association Our next activity will be a croquet evening at 5pm on Sunday 16th September, followed by a meal at the Cricketers Inn in Duncton. Croquet is a game of strategy, angles, tactics and accurate ball hitting. A bit like snooker on grass. The Rother Valley Croquet Club, with beautiful views of the South Downs, has two lawns just by the Duncton village hall . No special clothing is needed, just flat soled shoes. Equipment will be provided as well as instruction by Club members. There is a visitors fee of ÂŁ5.

Tangmere Village Tennis Club We are a small friendly tennis club and our booked court times are on Tuesday evenings, 5.30 to 7pm, Wednesday afternoons 3-4:30pm and Saturday mornings 10-12noon and are now in full swing. Our AGM was held on 17th May 2018 at Tangmere Surgery.

Book sales amounted to £635. Village Fete & Christmas Fayre made £266.in the financial year 2017/8.

From these amounts we were able to donate £500 towards the blood pressure machine which is situated in the Doctors surgery waiting area, plus the practice nurses are pleased with the Doppler probe [circulation] machine.

After the AGM Becker Randall from Dementia Support, Sage House, City Fields Tangmere gave a short talk on the NEW Hub. Inviting all to visit the Hub and use Daisy's cafe open Mon to Friday Walkers group meet at the car park of the surgery at 10 o'clock every 3rd Tuesday of the month.

All of the Chichester practices, including Tangmere, are now working together as part of an LCN, a Local Community Network. The idea behind this it to bring together all of the local organisations who are involved in health and care services so that we can work together to improve the health and wellbeing of local people.

There are regular monthly meetings which involve GPs, community nurses, the council and the voluntary sector. As a priority, they are currently looking at the services and support available to the frail and elderly.

The group is looking for patients who might want to be involved and would like to attend these meetings as a patient representative. If there is anybody out there who would be interested in this role, please contact the surgery and we can give you further information.

PHARMACY2U It has been brought to our attention that patients have received fliers advertising Pharacy2U. Some patients have the impression that the surgery is promoting this service. We would like to confirm that this is not the case. We do indeed use the NHS electronic prescription service but we do not promote any pharmacist. It is up to the patient who they choose to use.

Tangmere Village Centre If you have an event taking place over the coming months or something special next year and as yet you have not booked a venue, why not consider the newly refurbished Tangmere Village Centre.

Flower Club

Comments from your District and County Councillor Of all that the public sector does, two activities affect almost all of us all of the time – Highways (WSCC/Highways England (A27)) and Waste collection/disposal (CDC/WSCC).

However they actually attract a very small proportion of overall public spending.

Consensus has recently been reached between WSCC and CDC as to their view on the future of the A27 at Chichester – i.e. get a scheme into Government’s Road Investment Strategy 2 (RIS 2) programme and prefer it to be a Northern route. This singing off the same hymn sheet by the Local Authorities needs to be clearly backed by our local MP in order to give this scheme the best chance of getting the funding it, and all of us along the Sussex Coast, needs. This area is going to get a lot more housing and other development over the next few decades and it needs the highways infrastructure to support it. However, the same can be said for many other places around the country so competition is going to be tough.

Many residents are used to using the Oving Lights junction on the A27 to easily get in and out of Chichester. Oving Parish Council’s application to get the Shopwyke Lakes Conditions (which require the closure of most movements at this junction) removed has now been refused. At the present rate

of build, the trigger point for closure will be around 2023. This is probably 3 to 4 years after we know what, if any, RIS 2 scheme might be. In effect, the only hope now of keeping the lights open in the long term is a Northern by-pass.

CDC collects our domestic waste, and WSCC disposes it. Whatever happens with Brexit, the current EU 2020 50% recycling requirement is likely to stay (though whether the fines for not meeting it will stay is another matter). A lot of thought is going into how to improve current local recycling rates which are stubbornly staying in the low 40s%. Please do everything you can to follow recycling advice. Every little helps - the next steps are likely to be expensive.

Since 1999, the part of the old airfield South of Tangmere has been designated as a Horticultural Development Area (HDA).

On 13th June, CDC granted permission (17/01699/FUL) for a new large glasshouse and packhouse development in the South Western part of the HDA. Its vehicle access road runs through the middle of the HDA up to City Fields Way plus a permissive foot/cycle path onto Oving’s Church Lane South of the Museum. Tangmeres’ Neighbourhood Plan had a part in mitigating the effects of what is going to be the start of a very significant (and long expected) change in the environment South of the village.

Note the new access road cuts off a small area around the Control Tower from the rest of the HDA.

Community Wardens Over the last couple of months we have seen an increase in the amount of calls we are getting regarding Cannabis.

One Myth that needs to be overcome is “Cannabis is legal�. Cannabis is NOT legal it is a class B drug, These days the Cannabis we are seeing is far more potent than a few years ago, it has many dangers and side effects. Please help us to educate our young residents of the dangers that drugs pose.

You may remember that we told you about a new keep fit class that was being held in Tangmere Academy school hall. The classes have been very popular, are great fun and are totally free. We are very lucky in that the classes will now also run throughout the schools Summer holidays for adults, they were originally term time only, and we are also going to be running sports sessions for children at the same time aged 6 years and over. These will run at the same time with qualified sports coaches. All children must be accompanied by an adult for the duration of the session. So if you don’t want to join in the adult Fit and Fun session then you can still bring your child/ children but you will have to stay during the session. The sessions will take place every Friday morning from 10 - 11 am at Tangmere Academy as they have kindly offered to let us continue to use their hall and also the playground. August and September - Harvest time - are often times of glut in your veg garden and in the shops, so be prepared.

Cucumbers, courgettes, marrow, onions, leeks - all the sorts of vegetables that really don't like freezing either! All can grow huge if not watched and picked frequently - but what to do with them? Give them away to needy friends - not too often? There are recipes aplenty for everyday dishes but you will need to be quicker than that - and more creative! Why not try your hand at pickling!

Cucumber can be turned into an old fashioned Bread & Butter Pickle - thickly sliced with onion and layered in jars with lots of salt. Weight down and leave 2-3 hours.

Drain, rinse and dry on kitchen towel. Cook for 2-3 minutes in a cider vinegar syrup with spices and seeds, then cool and pack into jars to mature for only 2-3 weeks.

There are loads of chutney recipes you could use with these vegetables and tomatoes of course which can also run riot! Cook up batches with a friend and share?

Be prepared with plenty of good vinegar, brown sugar tastes best but makes a very dark mix, and lots of seeds & spices like Turmeric, ginger, coriander, cumin, allspice, cloves, chilies.

Of course Courgette and marrows can make delicious soups to freeze, mixed with your glut of tomatoes, leeks & garlic!

Finally a top tip from Alan Titchmarsh - if you are early enough and strong willed enough - pick through your plants and remove the weaker/smaller ones BEFORE they take over. You should still have plenty to enjoy in the weeks to come!

My Aunt came to Tangmere to paint in 1964 and i helped her cut the big field hedge behind Acre End once a year. I was 30 and never dreamed I would be helping St Andrews church stay open in my 70's. Back then my house was backed by the airfield and each side was orchard and waste land. I seldom complain about new housing-including what's coming- because I'm too interested in the people who come to live in them. What skills, friendship, sorrows and prejudices will they bring to the village ? And hopefully some will join the Community Garden., the village History Society, the Twinning Association , the famous Cootes Bible study and even St Andrews church.

Talking of which Jesus promised that the gates of hell would never destroy the church but whether that means all the parish church buildings of Britain , alas I'm not so sure. However St Andrews is surviving against all the odds and weekly worship, baptisms and funerals are constantly provided for the people of Tangmere, free or at bargain prices.

And when you pass by hug our ancient Yew tree- it too is surviving against all the odds.

Prebendary Sunday 16th September is designated Battle of Britain Sunday, a day when we commemorate those young pilots who fought so bravely in the skies over the South of England to ward off an impending German invasion and paid the supreme sacrifice.

We will mark the day in Tangmere with a special service in the parish church at 10.00 am which will be led by myself, Canon David Nason, and attended by a Deputy Lord Lieutenant and the High Sheriff of the County together with the Mayor and Mayoress of Chichester. A contingent of Cadets form the Western Sector of Sussex Wing of the RAF Air Cadets will march from the Tangmere Museum behind their band at 9.30 and take part in the service.

The service will conclude with an act of remembrance beside the graves of the RAF and German pilots who are buried in the churchyard. After the service the Museum have kindly offered to provide refreshments. Local residents are warmly invited to join us for the service and for the refreshments afterwards at the Museum.

Big Thank You to the Tangmere Nursery for inviting us to hold a stall at their open day on the 10th June.

It was a very busy day. We had photos for people to see the garden at the start to how it is now. We had many visitors looking through our pictures and they were amazed at the change.

Being a fairly new member myself it is quite amazing to see the change and appreciate all the hard work the members put in to create what is there today. Some of our current produce was on show along with herbs and flowers from the garden.

We have been very busy in May with planting Tomatoes, Peppers, Chillies, Butternut Squash and Salads within the Poly Tunnel. This all seems to be growing very fast and looks like it will be a Fab Harvest once ready to eat.

Our monthly bring and share supper clubs have started again and we are enjoying sharing dishes and a glass or two of wine with friends in the garden. Also we would like to welcome Vanessa and her family to the Garden and hope they enjoy what the garden has to offer and make many new friends.

We are always keen to gain new members to the garden as there are always plenty to do and plenty of produce to share. Tangmere Tuesday Club We are a lively group who meet at the Village Centre every Tuesday between 2pm and 4pm for a chat and a cup of tea. We enjoy playing cards, scrabble, bingo, beetle and often go on outings.

We have been having the most amazing summer, although I am writing this in June, and by the time you read it in August everything may have changed, who knows.

In nearly every one of my reports I encourage you to contact 101 to report a crime, well I had occasion to use this number recently when the Community Garden HQ was broken into and our new petrol strimmer stolen. The cheeky beggars even stayed to make themselves at home with a cup of tea! When I discovered this crime I phoned 101 on my non smart phone, it was answered quite quickly and I was told to hold on and someone would take the details. Hold on, I did for 50 mins, during which time I listened to a recorded message interminably advising me to report online. Of course I would probably have done this if I had been at home, but I wasn’t. I tried to be polite when I eventually was attended but I left the operative in no uncertain terms that the service was rubbish and that I was sure that many people would have given up rather than hang on for such an unacceptable length of time. I asked her to report my dissatisfaction. I also did this online when I was home. I did receive a letter of apology from Nicky Jones, Duty Operations Officer of the ‘Force Contact, Command and Control Department’. Would it not have been enough just to continue to call it the Contact Centre. I was assured in this letter that two new intakes of staff are now working and that another intake is currently being trained. This suggests to me that they have been very short of staff and t now that they have put up their precept in our Council Tax Payments things may start to improve. Well I certainly hope that Sussex Police will spend the extra money, that we the public, are providing in ways that will actually make a difference, not just in renaming parts of their service.

Well that is my current rant, please continue to report crime on 101 but please let me know your experiences.

Your Village CafĂŠ

After a very jolly wedding morning Cafe we had quite a thin cafe in June. Where were you all?!!

We are now going to move to a regular timetable so you never forget - the FIRST Saturday of every month from July 7th 11am-2pm. Serving cakes/scones/biscuits and light lunches.

Also I hope soon to open one weekday morning of the month - probably Tuesday to catch al those Mums & Dads who bring little ones to baby sensory, playgroups or pre-school, hang around most of the morning and are in great need of a cuppa when they have finished! Tangmere Local History Group offers a programme of speakers and outings on subjects of historical interest, particularly in Tangmere and Chichester, but also further afield.

Visitors are always very welcome to our meetings.

Our planned speaker was unable to come to the June meeting. Instead we used a You- tube video to prove for ourselves that we could all draw –even if it was only cartoons.

There will be no official meeting in August although some of us will be attending the federation quiz at North Mundham. We also hope to have an informal get together.

Hi all, I promised to keep you updated on our progress on the tower campaign. Well, we have certainly turned the corner!

We are delighted to have achieved the 1st phase of fundraising, there were over 40 donations to our just giving page and a particularly sizable donation took us to the target.

This gives us the ability to unlock phase one, which will enable a security fence around the site, a security door and full buildings conditions survey by a conservation architect. This will give us the evidence and knowledge of the state and fabric of the building.

We are still receiving donations, which is great! The more ability we have to achieve our aim is welcome. We’re also still receiving letters, photos, stories and memories of our control tower. We would love to incorporate into the tower somehow, it’s only right that we honour those who paid the ultimate sacrifice for the freedoms we enjoy today.

Know your village…… A series of facts about our village compiled by the Tangmere Local History Group.

TLHG have copies of old maps created and published by Yeakel and Gardner; the originals are held and displayed by Goodwood Estates. These date to around 1778 -1790 and cover large areas of Sussex most show tracks and farm trails all un -named but later maps show them to be roads within parishes.

One such trail became known as Hoggets Lane [hogget is a name for a farm animal]; this track crosses fields referred to as as Leap Mares [mostly now in Boxgrove village] then onward through the hamlet of Strettington finally arriving at Levin Down. Another trail leaving Hogget Lane [now called Chestnut Walk] leads towards St James and St Pancras Churches, ending up at the market in 24

Chichester.

There is some anecdotal evidence to support the claims that the street names in Tangmere came about in several [3 or 4] distinct stages. After the MOD relinquished its hold on the village there was a need to develop street names. At the time the District Council purchased MOD houses for social housing and none of the roads had any name and the house numbers were allocated in sequence by MOD builders. The street names were formalised by the newly established [1966] Tangmere Parish council after a request for suggestions was made to the then residents who suggested they were named after RAF VC medals holders and RAF aircraft. Some time later Seawards started a house building programme and created estates by Meadow way and Hayleybridge Walk. At that time Tangmere Community Association, which ran the Spitfire club located in Spitfire Court, proposed all the new road names on these two estates.

Nicolson Close: Flight Lieutenant James Brindley Nicolson VC During an engagement with the enemy near Southampton on 16th August, 1940, F/L James Nicolson’s aircraft was hit by four cannon shells, two of which wounded him whilst another set fire to the gravity tank. When about to abandon his aircraft owing to flames in the cockpit he sighted an enemy fighter. This he attacked and shot down, although as a result of staying in his burning aircraft he sustained serious burns to his hands, face, neck and legs. Flight Lieutenant Nicolson has always displayed great enthusiasm for air fighting and this incident shows his courage and determination of a high order. By continuing to engage the enemy after he had been wounded and his aircraft set on fire, he displayed exceptional gallantry and disregard for the safety of his own life. He was the only Battle of Britain pilot and the only pilot of RAF Fighter Command to be awarded the Victoria Cross during the Second World War. An exhibit in the Tangmere Military Aviation Museum commemorates this airman.

Wellington Place: Vickers Wellington, long-range bomber The Wellington was named after Arthur Wellesley, 1st Duke of Wellington; aside from its operational duties the Wellington also played its part in the testing for the Bouncing Bomb used by the Dambusters in May 1943. R for Robert is one of only two surviving Wellingtons to have seen active service first flown by Mutt Summers, Vickers’ chief test pilot who was the first to fly the Spitfire.
