Hopefully you, your families and friends have coped with the wet weather we have had this winter and now enjoying the longer days.

A number of residents have reported a failure of dog owners to clear up after their dogs on the recreation field. There are bags available next to the dog bin on the recreation ground and please remember that bags can be disposed of in the Chichester District bins situated around the village.

Chichester Open Studios Art Trail 2020 The 2020 Open Studios Art Trail sees 177 artists exhibiting a wide range of work across 147 Venues in and around the City of Chichester during the first two weekends in May. Saturday & Sunday May 2nd, 3rd Bank Holiday Friday, Saturday, Sunday May 8th, 9th, 10th Venues are open from 10.30am - 5pm each day Peninsula, Regis, City, Downs & Harbour Trails: Visitors can explore one Trail at a time, or hop around Venues as they choose; this is the opportunity to enjoy the art and hospitality of our talented local artists for 5 days in May. Preview Exhibition at the Oxmarket Gallery from Tuesday 21st - Sunday 26th April.

As we age we lose muscle (called sarcopenia), and physically inactive people can lose as much as 5% of their muscle mass each decade after age 30, with it starting to speed up around age 75. It means it becomes harder to do everyday tasks that require us to have strength to perform them, such as climbing stairs, lifting objects and walking. Muscle loss is also associated with increased risks for falls, fractures, hospitalization, poor mobility, and disability. Most people know that we need to do some type of activity that gets us a little bit out of breath, and for this activities such as walking are good, but it’s not enough by itself. In addition to exercise that raises the heart rate the government’s Chief Medical Officer recommends that people do strength training exercises at least twice a week. These exercises can be done using free weights, body weight, machines or bands. The muscles need to be challenged enough that the last repetition of the exercise should be difficult to finish. You are never too old to start strength training and regain muscle strength. If you would like some guidance on how to add strength training to your routine, why don’t you come and join one of the fun and friendly exercise classes at Tangmere Village Centre.

Our fun and friendly Physio led exercise class has had an active and enjoyable 2019, with participants reporting improvement in their balance, fitness and overall wellbeing. For us the year ended with an enjoyable lunch at Sage House, plus tea and mince pies after our last session.

Anyone who would like to find out more about this class is invited to come along for a free taster session, where you will receive a warm welcome. Just turn up at Tangmere Village centre, Tuesdays 3.30pm or Fridays 10.30am.

Time to think about our future

As part of our ongoing Careers education, we worked with Primary Futures to connect with a range of people working in different industries and job roles.

In January 2020, we invited 12 volunteers into school for a ‘What’s my line assembly?’ for KS2 children. Children were able to pose questions which the volunteers were able to answer with yes or no answers. The children then had to guess the job and industry that the volunteer worked in. Once the children had guessed, the volunteers revealed their job roles and spoke about the work that they did.

After the assembly, children in years 5 and 6 met with the volunteers to find out even more about their jobs, skills and training. There was a great buzz in the hall with lots of excellent discussions going on. The event was so successful that it is featured as a case study on the Primary Futures website and can be viewed at https://primaryfutures.org/ careers-day-at-tangmere-primary-academy-in-west-sussex/

TPA World Book Day Celebrations All the children were given the opportunity to decorate a vegetable as their favourite book character. These were then judged by Gaenor Bagley, the Chair of Trustees at TKAT. The children created some fabulous characters and we enjoyed reading a range of the stories that they feature in.

As part of our Book week and to continue our love of reading campaign, we had a family reading event.

The children enjoyed reading with their family members over a chocolate milk and cookies.

Tangmere Primary Academy are collecting the Little Street School Vouchers. Any donated to the school will be gratefully received.

We are looking to improve our Early Years outside learning environment. We are looking for any unwanted pallets, tyres, outdoor wood paint, plants/ blubs, paving slabs etc.

Tangmere Village Centre If you have an event taking place over the coming months or something special next year and as yet you have not booked a venue, why not consider the Tangmere Village Centre.

It is an ideal venue for weddings, birthdays, parties, children’s parties, group bookings and events and our conference room is ideal for meetings. The kitchen is large and fully equipped with a double oven, refrigerator, microwave, dishwasher, hot water urn and cutlery for large gatherings and the use of the kitchen is included in the price.

There is a large car park adjoining the Centre, which is situated on the edge of the village green so it is an excellent venue for summer events when both inside and outside of the centre can be safely enjoyed.

We held our AGM on the 7th March Marion has been nominated to be Chair again for 2020. David has nominated to be the Treasurer again for 2020. Susanne was nominated to be Secretary for 2020. We would all like to say thank you to Lois and Paul for hosting the AGM in their Home. Paul fantastic Coffee!

We also held a planning meeting as to how we will continue in the Garden this coming year. We are looking to create a full bed of Lavender which in time will encourage our Beautiful Bumble Bees.

Hilary will be designing this area and with the help of others members create a fantastic Bumble Bee area. The Pig Pen is going to be upcycled to create a Bonfire Pit which will be much safer when little ones are around. We are looking to open the area where the Pig Pen was sited to make another seating area as this holds the Sun longer throughout the day and will be much better when Supper Evenings are being held through the Spring and Summer months.

Date for your Diary Our annual open afternoon will be held on Sunday 12th July 2 till 4pm. We will have our Selection of Cakes and many will be Home Bakes along with a nice cup of Tea or Coffee to go with that lovely piece of cake. We will also have a Tombola so you can try your luck to win a prize.

We are looking forward to meeting the Beavers of Tangmere in June. I cannot believe how many they are well done to Nicki and her Team for running such a successful group. They are going to undertake some seed sowing of Sunflowers so we can have a beautiful Summer Yellow flower bed. They are also going to sow some seeds of cress for the Members and for themselves. Going to be busy but Fun!!!

The following summarises some of the drainage issues in the Parish and what work has been done since 2012. In the latter case, the Parish Council has utilised WSCC’s Op Watershed fund to address some issues and conduct a survey to find defects and propose solutions.

waste dumping). The Co-Ops car park drains straight off onto Tangmere Rd, hence helping to overload the decayed private ditch to the South. An on-site soakaway (which would also make some car parking spaces more usable and debris free) would address this.

Tangmere Road and Church Lane have the following drainage defects: Jerrard Rd to Meadow Way – loss of connection in WSCC drain on East side of road; Meadow Way to Chestnut Walk – loss of connections in front of Tangmere Cottage and at the South side of the old airfield entrance (WSCC/private pipework); Blockage (tree roots?) in WSCC drain in front of Tangmere House; Church Lane – debris build up due lack of fall in WSCC drains to Tangmere Rd and loss of connection with the Bayley Road system.

The main priority is to address the blockage at Tangmere House, which would resolve the Chestnut Walk pond issue and some of the foul sewer inundation problem which is causing the surcharging of access covers at Hearn Close and Haresfield Terrace.

Church Lane’s issues could be addressed

by Op Watershed funded clearance work, though a longer-term solution could be to create a new ditch out to the South to connect to an existing ditch which crosses the Tangmere Straight.

Further afield, the flooding at the East end of Ovings’ Church Lane is caused by a loss of connection in WSCC’s drain to

Successes have been: The new Op Watershed soakaways at Cheshire Crescent and Garland Square (plus Hyde funded pipe relining) minimising the flooding risk to houses; WSCC and Op Watershed works to keep Tangmere Road’s Museum bend clear of flooding; Access maintained along Easthampnett and Marsh Lanes due to new Op Watershed gullies and drains plus WSCC/ private ditch clearance around the Sewage Works; and The Op Watershed/Portsmouth Water work to prevent the previously prolonged flooding of the Marsh Lane bridleway.

Chairman’s Report As the weather begins to improve, it is lovely to see the daffodils flowering around the village. They only last a few weeks, which makes it all the more disappointing when we see vandalism to them in some of the locations planted. If residents see such damage being done, could I ask them to challenge the people causing the destruction?

Now that we have installed the Speed Indicator Devises (SIDS) it is reassuring to see that drivers are responding to their speed and adjusting as appropriate. We are a village with many children, so careful driving is clearly a benefit to all of our residents The establishment of the village film club was made possible with the funding for state of the arts equipment in the main hall of the village centre.

The Parish Council wants to be able to share the benefits of this facility with as many residents as possible who wish to get involved, at the very cheapest possible rates. By not formally advertising the specific film being shown, we are able to comply with the most basic licence requirements that is available for public showing of high quality films.

This means that we will only be able to share the specific details with “members” who can be told of the title and details of forthcoming shows by email, or word of mouth.

At the last 2 film nights we showed “Murder on the Orient Express (2017 version), and “The man who sued God” staring Billy Connolly.

At both showings we had over 25 residents enjoying a really great evening that finished before 10pm.

If you want to get involved, please send an e-mail to Tangmerefilmclub.gmail.com There is a meeting of residents each year which is called the “Annual Meeting of Electors”, which this year takes place on Thursday 23 April 2020, at 7.30pm.

In order to encourage residents to attend, we will be offering a “cheese and wine” event this year and inviting all user groups to attend to show what they do in the village. There will be no boring minutes and no boring agenda items, just an opportunity to see what is available to residents in their own village, and a chance to informally discuss items of interest.

There will be regular meetings of the “Tangmere Action Group”, where events and activities can be discussed and planned. If you want to get involved, please let me know, and I will let you know details of the meetings.

There remains a vacancy on the Parish Council. If you feel that you want to get involved with the village, and help shape the way forward, then let us know and we will be able to let you know the appointment process.

The group really enjoyed a “Cakes and Cocktails “ evening in February, followed by a fascinating talk all about chocolate ( as well as several tasters to try) ( thanks to Dawn from Salon du Chocolate) in March. So for the April meeting we have decided to try something a little healthier and have a go at Zumba. If you are interested in joining us do come along on the 7th April at 7.30 at the Village Hall.

Our next activity on Saturday 9th May will be lunch at The George, Eartham, followed by a tour of the Tinwood Vineyard.

It’s not too late to be included in our visit to our twin town and site of Sword Beach, Hermanville-sur-Mer, over the weekend of 19th – 21st June.

We will be staying with French families and enjoying wonderful French hospitality, all at no cost other than travel and presents for our hosts.

Comments from your District and County Councillor Much is being made of the need to address environmental sustainability due to the prominence of the Climate Change agenda. However there is also the issue of financial sustainability on which our society’s ability to look after the existing population’s needs (and meet its demands) depends. Across West Sussex Council Tax will on average rise by about £75 (for a Band D property) as WSCC, CDC, Police and Parish precepts increase to try and meet the ever increasing demands and costs of the services they deliver. Public expectations of public sector services and the growing legal complexities in delivering them, increase funding pressures.

Added to this are the personnel costs, particularly pension costs. Can we sustain all this and address climate change at the rate which is being demanded?

Housebuilding is a significant contributor to expanding the taxbase. Governments’ increasing housebuilding targets are backed by very strong Planning Laws. Producing a Local Plan to manage development is an increasingly complex evidence gathering process.

The transport and environmental issues of our area are lengthening CDC’s Local Plan Review timetable. Meanwhile the requirements of the current Local Plan continue to drive the Tangmere Strategic Development (TSDL) and on March 3rd CDC’s Full Council authorised the Compulsory Purchase of the land within the TSDL. After a period of compliance checking, the Order will be sent to

the Secretary of State for it to be put through the confirmation process. If a landowner comes to an agreement with CDC/ Countryside, then that land could be included in the TSDL without being subject to the Order.

The continuing drainage issues in the village and the ability of potholes to proliferate are a reminder of the need to maintain infrastructure. Fortunately we have not had houses flooded, but surcharging sewers, pedestrian access issues and damage to road surfaces are impacts that need highlighting to make the case for work to be done. Further investigations will be needed before works are carried out to minimise these impacts in the future.

The early months of a year are the best time to carryout litter picking as the vegetation is at its least active and litter most visible!

Apart from the visual impact, all that waste is also polluting the environment (including watercourses) as it breaks down. If allowed to accumulate (e.g. on highway verges) the smoke from any fires on affected land will be denser and contain a lot of chemicals. CDC’s recent annual litter pick of the verges along the A27 in the District produced 387 bags of waste and 16 van loads of car parts. Hopefully many of you will get involved in this year’s Great British Spring Clean events (www.keepbritaintidy.org/get-involved/ support-our-campaigns/great-british-springclean). Please bear in mind the environmental impact of waste and litter dropping all the year round.

Sport in mind This season the FA has developed a partnership with Mind to raise awareness of mental health issues amongst football fans. A quote from Stephen Fry – the president of Mind – explains the importance of this partnership:- “As a lifelong Norwich City fan and President of Mind, I am delighted that the EFL have decided to put a focus on mental health. So many men in particular struggle in silence with their mental health and feel terribly alone. But football is a uniting force and this partnership has the potential to tackle the shame and stigma around mental health and raise awareness amongst millions of fans in an unprecedented way. I hope that all 72 EFL Clubs, their players and fans get firmly behind this work.” https://www.mind.org.uk/news-campaigns/news/mind-announces-newpartnership-with-efl/ The first weekend of January the kick-off of 30 FA matches was delayed by 1 minute and a video was shown hosted by Prince William and with the likes of Alex Scott, Frank Lampard and Harry Maguire among other well-known footballers featuring in it. This was the launch of a campaign run by Heads Up and Every Mind Matters. A new NHS website has been put together www.nhs.uk/oneyou/every-mind-matters where you can answer just a few basic questions about your mental health and it will form a mental health plan for you with ideas that you may be able to use to address any well-being issues you may be facing.

Alongside this Mind are running a “Have Your Mate’s Back” campaign which is to encourage football fans to look out for their mates. If they seem like they are struggling then it is likely that they are, so even if they say they are fine, keeping up a conversation may be what helps them to seek help. Times Past……. Number 6 Easter Tide magazine articles dated APRIL 1898 The services will be as follows: Good Friday 11 am matins and Sermon, 3pm Evensong and the story of the cross. Easter day 8am Holy Communion, 11am Matins, sermon and holy communion, 3 pm Evensong and sermon.

It is hoped that all who can will bring flowers (primroses would be nice) to the church for decorations, no later than 10am on Easter Eve. Any offer to help decorate the church will be well received.

“I’ll tell your mother about you when I gets home if you don’t remember to wipe your feet on the mat when you come into church” We can only hope that everybody heeds this advice and is as careful as you are, because then the new red matting in the aisle would remain nice and clean. We must be considerate and remember what our church cleaner has to do to keep our church looking clean.

I am not sure what the cleaner would have done when the church suffered damage from the lightning strike. The images below show what a terrible mess was created. I wonder if there any who can recall helping the cleanup and in particular taking up the red matting.

History Group

Tangmere Local History Group offers a programme of speakers and outings on subjects of historical interest, particularly in Tangmere and Chichester, but also further afield. Visitors are always very welcome to our meetings.

Our meetings are usually held at the Tangmere Medical Centre in the conference room, which is accessed at the rear of the building.

Next month we will be having a guided tour of Chichester Cathedral, focussing on “The English Civil War and the Cathedral”. This tour includes visiting areas not normally accessible to the public, and takes place on Thursday 16th April, at 2.30pm.

An amount of £1000.00 has been contributed towards a new vinyl floor for the nurses consulting room. Our next project is to make a contribution towards a new type of Doppler machine for measuring blood flow News from the Practice - For the latest news of the practice, the web site is at www.tangmeremedicalcentre.co.uk/category/news/.

There will be a walk on 21st April along the Chichester Canal and thereafter monthly walks on the third Tuesday of the month. Routes are decided by walkers.

A table of hampers containing gifted items is planned for the Spring Fayre in May. Contributions would be welcomed.

Books and CD’s - are yielding a useful income for the Friends next project. Books and CD’s are available for only 50p each. We welcome gifts of fairly new books.

Orchard update

This winter has apparently been the warmest in Europe since records began. That is bad news for fruit trees. Although apple-growing is now widespread in many climate zones, nearly all cultivars still require an annual cycle of cold winter weather in order to set blossom and produce fruit each year. The cold ensures dormancy which is essential for fruit production. If it is too mild trees may come into blossom before late winter frosts which damage fruit set. Also, late winter storms and cold will prevent pollinating insects from flying.

The weather has been so bad that by March I had not even begun to prune the trees. If you see me pruning, I will be desperately trying to catch up on this task.

Neighbourhood Watch

Hello, I am back from my long spell in hospital and gradually getting back on my feet.

I would like to take this opportunity of thanking those kind people that stopped in Meadow Way on 14th November after I had fallen and broken my patella (knee cap). They kept me dry and as comfortable as possible in the pouring rain, called the ambulance, called my daughter and generally looked after me until, by chance, an ambulance came. Not as it happens the one that was meant for me (that would have been 2 hours) but one that was passing on it’s way to Bognor. The kind crew pulled up and asked what was going on and decided they couldn’t leave me and proceeded to sort me out and got me to St. Richards. What a bit of luck, but I think I needed at bit by then. So I had gone out to lunch with a friend and never got home until 7 weeks later!

I know accidents happen but I will be ultra careful from now on as I never want to repeat that experience. So, once again thank you to all those that stopped to help on that awful day (I think I had 4 umbrellas held over me) and to those lovely friends and neighbours that have helped out since I have been home. Kate Beach 01243 532505 Helping Hedgehogs A plea from Mr and Mrs Hedgehog of Tangmere (and their hoglets) We were voted the UK’s favourite mammal in 2016 but we are in devastating decline so here are a few tips to help us stay alive and even thrive: In the spring, when we become active again, be careful not to crush us in the evening on the roads; our little legs don't allow us to run fast. Besides, our hoglets are born blind and naked so they are totally dependent upon us when born.

If you see us in your garden and want to feed us put down chicken flavoured cat food and fresh water, only water, never milk. And make sure if we fall into your pond, we can get out again.

When I walk up the path to the church, I often think about those who have made that short journey from the gate to the door of the church. I look at the gravestones and wonder about the lives of the people who were buried there all those years ago. And when I get to the church, I often sit for a few minutes and look around, thinking about those people who have sat there before me. And I marvel at the fact that this 800 year old building is still here and still doing what it was built to do.

The yew tree outside may have grown a bit, the churchyard has a few more graves than there used to be, but the building is still a church. And it is still a place where anyone can come and find the rarest of commodities - Peace and Quiet. The church is not on a main road nor under the flightpath to a major airport. It is truly a place of peace and quiet.

And over the years, many people have come and sat. Some sit and think, some sit and prayer, others just sit.

And the fact the the church is still here, the churchyard is looking lovely and the building is open is because Christians make the effort to make the building available to others.

And it is appreciated. Some of the comments in the visitors book tell us

that people love the calm and peace and quiet of the place.

So if you ever need a place to sit and think, sit and pray or just sit, come and visit us. And soak in the peace and quiet that has been at the heart of Tangmere for 800 years.

The lighter nights are almost upon us and warmer, dry weather is hopefully not far away! To be honest, bad weather, in some ways helps us out. Anti Social Behaviour reduces, it would appear the criminals don’t like to get wet! I’m sure you can imagine the potential harm these could have done in the wrong hands. We arranged to have these safely disposed of by HM Coastguard at Lee on the Solent.

We also received reports of Air weapons being used in the vicinity of the airfield, we found out who this was and they were dealt with by Sussex Police.

More damage has been caused to the play area at Osborn drive, after some investigation we believe we have the identity of those involved and home visits are being carried out with Sussex Police. All

the damage caused to this area, is paid for by the residents of that estate, and unsurprisingly, they are getting annoyed.

One thing that we are seeing more of is simply being inconsiderate, although not something that can be “dealt with” by an agency such as us, I feel that by highlighting it, may help us all to think about how our actions affect others. Such things as littering and Dog Fouling, what are the impacts? Inconsiderate parking or using disabled spaces, when you have no need to, we see this regularly at the Co Op, just a couple of seconds of thought can make all the difference to someone else.

EASTER AT THE MUSEUM, 4th April to 19th April, 10.30am - 6.00pm. The Museum is a wonderful place to visit at Easter for family-friendly Easter activities.

SPRING FOOD FESTIVAL, 2nd May to 3rd May, 10.30am – 5.00pm. The very best of the south east’s food & drink – Enjoy free cookery demonstrations and short talks.

MUSEUM AT NIGHT: MYSTERIOUS ANIMALS, 15th May to 16th May, 8.45pm 11.00pm. Be guided by lamplight to different spaces around the Museum, to hear a series of short night-time stories in-keeping with Amazing Animals.

HISTORIC LIFE WEEKEND: WOOD CRAFT & TRADES, 23rd May to 25th May. 10:30am – 6.00pm. During this weekend, find out about the way wood is worked into the different forms, with demonstrations from a range of craftspeople and displays.

HALF TERM ACTIVITIES: NATURE, 25th May to Friday 29th MAY 10.30am-6.00pm, Head to the Museum for fantastic indoor and outdoor hands-on history fun this half term focusing on the Natural World, accompanied children of all ages can channel their energy into a range of activities.

* * * * Village centre user group This group exists to provide a forum for regular users of the village centre to discuss matters relating to the centre and its surroundings. The chair of the group attends the Village centre committee meetings to represent the member’s interests to the parish council. We meet on alternate months in the committee room.

This is also an opportunity to share group news and activities.

Tangmere Strategic Development Location (SDL) Update from Countryside Properties At a full council meeting on 3rd March 2020 Chichester District Council resolved to make the required Compulsory Purchase Order (CPO) to bring forward new homes and community facilities at the Tangmere Strategic Development Location (SDL) site. Further information regarding this decision can be found on the Council’s website.

As the development partner appointed by Chichester District Council to deliver the SDL, Countryside welcomes this decision as an important step forward in delivering the shared aspirations for Tangmere Village. Countryside is continuing to progress Its outline planning application, which will be submitted to the District Council for consideration in April 2020.
