STRONGER

MESSAGE

FROM THE CEO

As Southeast Asia’s oldest British international school, our Centenary year was truly worthy of celebration. This year’s Report of Giving reaffirms how deeply generosity enriches every facet of Tanglin.

Together, our community has enabled transformational experiences that go far beyond the classroom— nurturing curiosity, confidence, and a sense of belonging.

It is also about making the extraordinary possible—which is why the Tanglin Trust School Foundation exists. In our Centenary year, philanthropy has been a defining expression of our community’s spirit, funding exceptional projects through gifts of every size. Whether through Foundation membership levels like Guardian, Patron, Fellow, or the 1925 Society, each contribution is valued, celebrated, and received with heartfelt thanks.

This report honours the many people—parents, staff, alumni, governors, and students—who choose to make a difference, pay it forward, and allow Tanglin to achieve what other schools cannot. It also answers the important question: Where do our donations go?

With your support, our focus remains firmly on enabling the exceptional. We are committed to the highest standards of governance, oversight, and reporting—recognised nationally through the Singapore Government’s Charity Transparency Award.

As we look to Tanglin’s next hundred years, we will remain true to our non-profit, charitable purpose: building generations of excellence. Thank you for your belief in our students, our mission, and our future. Together, we will continue to foster a culture where individual potential flourishes and community bonds grow ever stronger.

With gratitude and optimism, Craig Considine

MESSAGE FROM THE DIRECTOR OF LEARNING

I’m delighted to introduce this year’s Report of Giving—a powerful reflection of how philanthropic support strengthens and enriches our educational mission.

Having been involved since the Foundation’s inception, it has been deeply rewarding to watch it grow from strength to strength. This year alone, we funded more than $500,000 in projects across our community, focused on four key areas: the Arts; Sport; Engagement with Global Issues; and Innovation, Imagination and Inquiry.

Teachers, students, and alumni are encouraged to apply for funding that enables projects to go above and beyond our curriculum. This Report of Giving showcases every project supported this year—whether initiated within an individual school, across the institution, or by Tanglin alumni. Each proposal is assessed collaboratively and measured against eight desired learning outcomes to ensure it delivers meaningful impact.

These grants make a tangible difference. They have brought to life inspirational art installations, enabled representative sports awards, funded visits from acclaimed authors, and supported service activities in Singapore and beyond. Each initiative enriches learning, fosters creativity, and expands the horizons of our students and teachers alike.

Thank you for investing in the intellectual and personal growth of our community. Your generosity fuels our ability to educate with curiosity, courage, and compassion—and ensures Tanglin students are equipped not only to succeed, but to lead, serve, and inspire in the world beyond our gates.

MESSAGE FROM THE DIRECTOR OF DEVELOPMENT, HEAD OF FOUNDATION

As we draw the curtain on Tanglin’s extraordinary Centenary Year, we look back with immense pride and deep gratitude. This has been a year to remember—not only for the milestones we celebrated, but for the remarkable spirit of generosity that has defined it.

In 2024–25, we saw record-breaking support for the Foundation. Thanks to the commitment of our parents, staff, alumni, and Foundation Advocates, we received nearly 1,200 gifts—raising over $447,000 through regular giving and an incredible $3.4 million in major, designated gifts and pledges. These figures reflect a growing belief in our mission and a shared desire to create extraordinary opportunities for our students and community.

What stands out most is the breadth of participation. More members of our community than ever before chose to give, proving that philanthropy at Tanglin is about more than large gifts—it’s about uniting behind a shared vision for the future.

The Foundation empowers Tanglin to do what other schools cannot: funding bold ideas, enriching student life, and offering everyone a chance to be part of our mission. This year, scholarships opened doors for talented students, while new initiatives fostered innovation, wellbeing, and global citizenship.

As we look to Tanglin’s second century, we invite you to continue this journey with us. When you give to the Tanglin Trust School Foundation, you are not just making a donation—you are investing in people, possibilities, and a legacy that will shape generations to come.

Centennial Arts Trail

A BRIDGE ACROSS THE SEA, a world premiere by artist and composer, Jonathan Dove OBE

Tanglin’s landmark Centenary Concert was all about togetherness. The concert, a part of the Centennial Arts Trail, took place at the prestigious Esplanade Concert Hall. It brought together over 450 students singers and instrumentalists on-stage in the lead up to and during the world premiere of A Bridge Across the Sea by Jonathan Dove OBE, specifically commissioned for Tanglin’s 100th year.

Months of planning culminated in the special evening presenting a rich and diverse programme, showcasing music from across the centuries and reflecting the breadth and depth of our musical provisions at Tanglin. It was truly inspiring to see our young musicians from Junior School perform alongside Senior Students, all sharing the stage with maestros from Resound Collective and Raffles Singers.

contributions

The experience offered our students a powerful glimpse into how their own musical journeys might unfold over time. An unforgettable ‘togetherness’.

A huge thanks to our teachers, cocurricular teams, technical support, volunteers and our expert theatre & events team who made it all possible. Above all, we are grateful to our community’s philanthropy, which made possible the commission of A Bridge Across the Sea. Thanks to their support - and the composer Jonathan Dove’s student mentorship - our students were presented with a unique exposure to the music and production of a world premiere. The generosity of our community continues to open doors of opportunity, inspire excellence, and bring extraordinary moments like this to life.

At age 8, I desperately wanted to learn the violin after hearing a piece in a film. Thanks to the Foundation, I had a chance to play the violin in music classes as part of the Junior Strings Programme and began lessons at school with my tutor Mr Tian, who made learning music really fun. Over four years, I’ve performed with three different school string ensembles, improved my technical skills (just passed Grade 5) and have had amazing opportunities to play at places like Botanic Gardens, Victoria Concert Hall and The Esplanade with my tutor and friends – an experience I will never forget. I’m excited and look forward to new musical opportunities offered in Senior School.

MY MUSIC JOURNEY LEADING UP TO THE CENTENARY CONCERT

Launched in 2024, our first ever Centenary Music Scholarships were created to recognise exceptional talent with the awards dedicated to outstanding achievement in music. Since then, 12 extraordinary students have embarked on this journey - each receiving dedicated instrumental tuition until they graduate and opportunities to perform on renowned stages. The Music Scholarships have been a remarkable success, uplifting not only the morale and visibility of our scholars but also elevating Tanglin’s standing in music excellence. These scholarships, thanks to the philanthropy at Tanglin, have opened doors, sparked inspiration, and taken Tanglin’s musical achievements to new heights.

SUNDIAL – with Artist Edwin Fung (Tanglin Alumnus)

A landmark piece of art was unveiled on Tanglin’s birthday to celebrate the legacy of our former CEO and Head of School Ron Stones OBE, whose leadership shaped Tanglin’s modern identity. It was designed by Edwin Fung, a renowned designer and Tanglin alumnus (2013 cohort).

The design is a blend of a stainless steel arch with an Indonesian teak and brass base. The art piece is not only a beautiful addition to the Sixth Form Piazza, it is also a functional memento that tells the time when the earth and sun interact. This form of art inspires our students, as it combines arts and science to honour those who have shaped our community today.

The Institute @ Tanglin Trust School

SPOTLIGHT ON STUDENT ENTREPRENEURSHIP PROGRAMME 2025

16 Sixth Form students pitched innovative business ideas at WeWork, marking the culmination of The Institute’s 16-week Entrepreneurship Programme with Reactor School.

Through research, testing, and teamwork, students developed real-world solutions and honed core entrepreneurial skills. An industry leaders’ panel judged the final pitches, and praised the professionalism, creativity, and ambition of all four teams. Team Edu Bot took home the winning pitch for their scalable and regionally focused concept! A huge congratulations to all teams!

WHAT IS THE INSTITUTE?

The Institute’s vision is to be a forum that promotes excellence, provides thought leadership, and encourages discourse to inspire, challenge and prepare the next generation of leaders in our community. The Institute office and space is situated on Level 11 of the Centenary Building at Tanglin Trust School.

Teacher Training, Caring for Cambodia

Junior School (Left in 2025)

135 local educators and 15 remote schools in Cambodia benefitted from hands-on science workshops, leadership training and focused sessions on fostering a culture of reading. 26 Tanglin teachers, librarians and leaders were supported by the Foundation to volunteer their time for this project, as a way of paying it forward in underserved communities. A lasting impact is truly realised with such regular teacher trainings in line with Tanglin’s long-term commitment with CFC.

Forest School Mud Kitchen

The mud kitchen has been a wonderful addition within our Forest School environment to promote hands-on, nature-based learning experiences for our children. Mud kitchens promote creativity and imaginative play through activities such as mud pie making, potion mixing, nature soup creations, mud painting and other imaginative play scenarios (e.g. pretend cooking, restaurant play). By engaging with natural materials like mud, flowers and sticks, children develop a deeper connection to the environment around them, fostering an appreciation for nature and sustainability from a young age.

Tanglin Ted’s Centenary Adventure Book, A Gift of Legacy

in July 2025)

I really wanted to bring the school’s history to life for our youngest children, and that idea soon grew into a story. The star of this time-travel adventure is Tanglin Ted, our Infant mascot, who is first introduced to Infant children when they join Nursery and even keeps them company in the Infant Office. Many of our most memorable annual events are featured and some well-known characters appear, too, within some familiar settings. To make the book more interactive, the children can search for Ted in the pictures where he is hiding and also hunt for their House badges within the pages! Every Infant family was given a copy of this special hardback storybook during Tanglin’s birthday celebrations.

International Visiting Author, David Vaughn

Project by Michael Kelly and The Infant Library

Author, actor, and football coach David Vaughan inspired all of Reception, Year 1 and Year 2 with his book Harry Heal the Friendly Footballer. His visit blended storytelling, wellbeing, and football-themed activities, as well as a writing workshop to promote empathy, resilience, and a love of reading.

Written and illustrated by Jo Osman

International Visitor,

Motivational Keynote with Senior School, and Leadership Workshop with Student Leaders. By Josephine Allen, Head of English and PPRS Faculty

A leading voice in diversity, equity and inclusion, Dr Lawrence delivered powerful keynotes sharing his deeply personal story and the importance of resilience, compassion, and the invigorated belief that every individual has the power to make a positive difference to the world. Student Leaders had a more intimate workshop with him on leadership skills and how they can drive meaningful change within their own areas of responsibility. His message of hope, strength, and proactive leadership resonated deeply with our students.

Singapore Ballet Showcase, an evening of dance appreciation for the whole school

Bringing dance to Tanglin was not just about putting on a good show for our community; it was about providing unique experiences for our students and offering an opportunity to engage with professional artists, gaining a deep understanding of ballet and contemporary dance. They learned from the best, explored new movement vocabularies, and worked alongside peers of different ages and abilities. These moments build more than just dance skills. They build confidence, resilience, focus, and grace. They show our students the value of discipline, the importance of creativity, and the joy of shared expression.

Beyond the performances themselves, the educational impact of this event was profound. Experiencing ballet in person offers children far more than just entertainment. It nurtures imagination, emotional intelligence, and abstract thinking. It encourages mindfulness, focus, and patience—skills that are increasingly important in our fast-paced world.

This wasn’t just a performance. It was a moment of magic. A celebration of possibility. A gift of the arts, brought directly to our students and community members.

LEGO Robotics, The Griff Challenge

Project

This year, Year 2 (Infant) and Year 3 (Junior) were given a mission to design and build a robotic transport vehicle capable of moving Griff, our beloved mascot, exactly 100cm to the Tanglin Trust School parade. At its heart, this challenge is more than just building LEGO robots. It is a celebration of collaboration, teamwork, and the joy of learning. It provides a platform for students to make new friends, share ideas, and develop the resilience needed to overcome challenges life skills that are essential for our students to be prepared for the real world.

Coral Restoration Project on Rawa Island, Recipients of the Deirdre Lew Service Award by Nancy H. (Year 13) , Ayesha B. (Year 13), Albert H. (Year 8) and Rand S. (Year 8)

The group led by Nancy and Ayesha collaborated with OrcaNation to conduct baseline research, record biodiversity, and identify an area for marine conservation, especially coral plantations. Their hope is to see a ‘Tanglin reef’ where visitors from our community learn how to conserve marine life surrounding our little red dot as part of an enduring Tanglin legacy.

Insect Workshop with The Curious Pangolin

Nature specialist James Khoo from The Curious Pangolin led an enriching Insect Workshop for Outdoor CCA students. Over the course of an hour, the children were introduced to the captivating world of insects, gaining a deeper understanding of their biology, ecological roles, and the importance of decomposition in sustaining natural habitats. Children observed live specimens and if comfortable, handle the creatures - with the highlight being the click beetle, which amazed the children with its ability to launch itself into the air. Many developed a keener eye and deeper appreciation for the small creatures that share their environment.

- Why We Give -

Ranjit Murugason & daughter Indrani Murugason - Tanglin Alumni

We are deeply honoured to have made a significant contribution as a family during Tanglin Trust School’s Centenary—a truly historic and meaningful milestone. Our hope is that such gifts will help expand learning opportunities for students in meaningful and diverse ways, and that it may also encourage more families within the community to join us in supporting the school’s continued growth. Together, we can help ensure that future generations of students benefit from enriching and transformative experiences.

I began my schooling at Tanglin at the age of four, and when it came time for my daughter Indrani to start her educational journey - also at four - there was no hesitation: Tanglin was the natural choice.

Despite the years that have passed, the Murugason family have seen how Tanglin has remained steadfast in its core values and its commitment to excellence and inclusivity, all while nurturing curiosity, empathy, and a love of learning in its students.

The Centenary celebrations gave both Indrani and me a meaningful opportunity to express our gratitude to the school, by making a donation for a Centenary Plaque through the Make Your Mark campaign. As Tanglin alumni, we’ve each pursued paths rooted in authentic service, and it has been rewarding to see our school’s continued embrace of community, social, and environmental causes. These efforts inspired us to support the Foundation and sustain our lasting connection with Tanglin.

We hope a third generation of Murugasons will one day have a chance to attend Tanglin, and see that despite an ever-changing world, the school will remain true to the values that have underpinned its appeal, to all, for another centenary.

Theatre & Events Team, and special mention to Johnson Manuel, Technical ManagerTanglin Staff

The Theatre & Events team is often behind the scenes (quite literally!), seamlessly putting together outstanding events, shows and productions at Tanglin.

To mark Tanglin’s special year, we joined the Make Your Mark campaign with our very own team plaque—a small but meaningful way to leave our legacy. It’s our way of saying: “We were here!” We’re proud to do our part as staff to give back and be part of Tanglin’s incredible story.

The BottinellisCurrent Parents

Our philanthropic journey with Tanglin commenced eight years ago, shortly after our eldest daughter joined the school. Our ongoing commitment is a gesture of gratitude for the diverse and enriching opportunities that the Foundation provides, not only for our own three children but for all Tanglin students. The Centenary Year has been special and an honour for our family’s legacy to be commemorated within the school. Our plaque, inscribed with “All you need is LOVE,” embodies our belief that the school community thrives when we nurture it with care, kindness, and compassion.

We are proud to support a place that gives so much, and we extend our sincere thanks to Tanglin for inspiring our family to give back in return.
