Welcome message from the Head of Junior School Dear Parents,
Clair Harrington-Wilcox Head of Junior School
As the Head of Juniors, it is my pleasure to welcome you and your child to our vibrant community. We are excited to embark on this educational journey together, where each child’s individuality will be nurtured and celebrated while passions and interests will be piqued and explored. Our Junior programme is designed to create a supportive and engaging environment that fosters growth, creativity, and a love of learning. We believe that every child is unique, and our dedicated team is committed to supporting you and your child through this wonderful journey. Tanglin’s Junior School (Years 3 to 6, ages 7 to 11) provides a nurturing environment where every child can flourish and thrive. To ensure that all children can achieve their very best, we offer a broad and balanced curriculum that inspires, motivates, and challenges. Our engaging learning environment facilitates a holistic approach that provides children with a wide range of opportunities both in and out of the classroom. These experiences promote children's personal, academic, creative, and physical development. For example, by the end of the Junior School, every child has the chance to gain a public speaking award either internally or accredited through the English Speaking Board. The new addition of our impressive Junior Arts Centre provides a stimulating environment where inspiration and creativity thrive. We encourage you to be actively involved in your child’s education as together, we can create a positive experience that will lay the foundation for their future. FUTURE READY The Tanglin Ten
The Tanglin Ten supports our Future Ready strategic aim by providing a shared language for the dispositions, values and behaviours we want every student to develop throughout their time at Tanglin. It gives students, staff, and parents a clear and consistent way to recognise, discuss and nurture the qualities that help young people thrive as learners, friends and members of the wider community. By embedding The Tanglin Ten Learner language across learning, pastoral care and co-curricular experiences, we make these qualities visible, teachable and recognisable in every aspect of school life. This helps students understand not only what they are learning, but who they are becoming.
17 NEW PARENT HANDBOOK
INSPIRED LEARNERS Tanglin’s 3-14 Curriculum Framework Tanglin has developed its own curriculum framework for students aged 3 to 14, based upon the UK National Curriculum. Junior School encompasses Milestones 2, 3, and 4, which supports the transition from Infant to Junior and Junior to Senior. For each subject, the Framework consists of the following three elements: • Threshold Concepts: The key concepts or ‘big ideas’ of the subject; these are the concepts that we want our students to develop a deep understanding of as they progress through the school. • Knowledge Categories: The areas of knowledge within each concept area. • Milestone Statements: What all students should know and be able to do at the end of each milestone, organised by Concept and Knowledge Category. The Milestone statements for each subject can be found in the 3-14 Curriculum at https://www.tts.edu.sg/junior-school/academics/curriculum or scan the QR code on the left.

18 NEW PARENT HANDBOOK
In Years 3 to 6, children benefit from a one-to-one iPad environment in school to complement the provision of desktops PC in media suites. This is an important step, giving children the added responsibility of looking after a personal device while learning how to use it responsibly in the safe, familiar, and structured environment of school.
The Online Safety Hub is an amazing resource for our Tanglin Community that offers a wealth of information and guidance covering the minefield of technology and apps out there. Visit https://tts.onlinesafetyhub.uk for more information. It can be found in the Parent Handbook on the School Portal and our website under the Safeguarding section. Around the middle of the school year, you will be updated on your child’s progress and next steps, as well as their approaches to learning. At the end of the year, you will receive a summative report that details their attainment measured against age-related expectations for their milestone, using the terminology Beginning, Developing, Advancing or Mastering. These are complemented by a parent-teacher conference to ensure that questions can be answered.
Parents will be invited to school to celebrate their learning journey at different points throughout the academic calendar. This will be in the form of productions, learning showcases, and book sharing.
Public Speaking Curriculum
Internal and accredited examinations through the English Speaking Board (ESB) examinations for Years 4-6 provide an invaluable opportunity for children to develop essential life skills through the assessment of speaking and listening. The ESB is a nationally recognised body in the UK that offers progressive and accredited qualifications, ensuring students gain the skills needed for school, further education, and beyond. These qualifications work on building confidence and improving communication skills. By focusing on these key areas, the Public Speaking Curriculum helps students strengthen their ability to engage in conversations, present ideas, and collaborate effectively—key skills for success both in and out of the classroom.

Friends of Tanglin
Friends of Tanglin brings the Tanglin community together by facilitating the opportunity to socialise, network, volunteer and support the school. Friends of Tanglin welcomes new families and supports our class representatives, who act as a liaison between Class Teacher and Parents. Please refer to the Friends of Tanglin overview to find out more. Connect You can access your class list on the school portal through the dashboard icon ‘Connect with your Class Parents!”. We aim to have a parent class representative per class at the beginning of the academic year, however this can take a couple of weeks to organise. Your class teacher can e-introduce you to your class rep as soon as they are in place. Most classes choose to have an informal Whatsapp chat for parents in the class. Whilst all formal communication is through In Touch, The Portal, and by email, it is suggested that at least one parent is added to the Whatsapp group so that any reminders can be disseminated effectively. Your class rep, once in place, can add you to the Parent Whatsapp for your individual class. In the meantime, for any queries, please get in touch directly with your teacher or friendsoftanglin@tts.edu.sg and we will be happy to help! Check out the Friends of Tanglin Portal Page to join one of our community interest groups or if keen, please join our pool of volunteers! You can also connect with us on social media at the Friends of Tanglin Facebook Page and our Friends of Tanglin Classifieds.

Tanglin's ParentWise Programme was established to enable our community to connect with the school and provide a toolkit for Tanglin parents and carers to gain knowledge, increase confidence and seek assurance. Co-Curriculum of school life, offering a vast range of after-school opportunities to inspire

While some clubs take place before school, the majority run after school from 3.00 pm to 5.00 pm. Parents are notified of registration periods via In Touch, our weekly newsletter, and sign-ups are managed through SOCS, Tanglin’s online activities platform, accessible from the Parent Portal homepage. Learning Beyond the Classroom
For over a hundred years, a Tanglin education has been based on the shared understanding that outdoor learning and time spent in nature are essential for the health and wellbeing of every child. Outdoor Education plays a crucial role in the Junior School by helping to develop real resilience and building a sense of community and connection. There are onsite experiences and events for children, along with a range of carefully selected day trips in and around Singapore. As the children progress through the Junior school, they begin to venture further afield, which culminates in a milestone residential trip for our Year 6 children. The trip is an opportunity to celebrate the successful completion of their time in the Junior School, while preparing them for more independence in the next stage of their school life. Children will participate in a number of day trips and residentials throughout the academic year. The residential trips include: • Year 3 - Residential at Singapore Zoo (2 days 1 night) • Year 4 - Residential in Singapore (3 days 2 nights) • Year 5 - Residential Trip to Pulau Sibu, Malaysia (4 days 3 nights) • Year 6 - Residential Trip to Sarawak (5 days 4 nights) • Service Trip to Cambodia • FOBISIA Music - Southeast Asia • FOBISIA Sport - Southeast Asia Heads of Year or Trip Leaders will notify parents about upcoming Outdoor Education trips through the termly year group newsletter and In Touch (the weekly school newsletter sent to parents each Friday). Dates of the trips are also available on the school calendar. Detailed information regarding itineraries and required equipment will be shared through an in-person information session led by the Trip Leader.

FLOURISHING INDIVIDUALS
In the Junior School, every child is seen, valued and well known. We create a community where children feel respected, cared for and develop a strong sense of belonging, with positive relationships at the heart of school life. Our school values of Respect, Responsibility and Purpose underpin daily life in the Junior School and are brought to life through assemblies, our Life Skills curriculum and dedicated pastoral time. Together with the Tanglin 10 Learner Profile, they provide a shared language and framework that supports every child’s personal growth and wellbeing. Our pastoral approach is both proactive and responsive, recognising that children succeed when they feel safe and connected. An explicit behaviour curriculum, built on clear expectations, consistent routines and positive relationships, creates an environment where every child develops the knowledge, skills and dispositions to thrive in school and beyond.
Safeguarding
Scan this QR code to watch a video about safeguarding at Tanglin for visitors.
Safeguarding involves keeping children safe from harm and promoting their wellbeing. Safeguarding is a key priority in Tanglin - it is everyone’s job to ensure that our children are safe. We welcome parents onsite as part of our community and request your support by watching a short video (scan the QR code on the left) and adhering to the safeguarding rules we have in place such as: signing in at the relevant school reception when you arrive; always wearing your lanyard and security pass; ensuring children arriving late are signed in at the office; only using toilets that are clearly marked for adults; and avoiding taking photos or videos of any children other than your own. Please help us by being a good role model at all times when you are on site – speak politely and kindly, praise children’s work and behaviour, and avoid foul or unkind language. If you have any concerns about the safety or wellbeing of a child, please approach any of our Designated Safeguarding Leads (look out for the posters around the school, or any member of staff can direct you). We thank you for supporting our efforts to keep our students safe, and invite you to look out for safeguarding updates and information through our various channels. The Designated Safeguarding Leads (DSLs) for Junior School are: • Rachel Turpin, Deputy Head (Academic) • Peter O'Brien, Deputy Head (Pastoral) • Benjamin Walker, Assistant Head (Co-Curriculum)

The Tanglin Pastoral Circle
Students and families are encouraged to access additional support when needed through engagement with our Co-ordinated Wellbeing Services (CWS). The team that forms CWS (nurses, school counsellors, learning support staff, educational psychologist, and school social worker) aims to be proactive as well as reactive and regularly contributes to the Pastoral and Lifeskills programmes for students. Every student at Tanglin Junior School is supported by at least 12 adults in different roles who look after their wellbeing. Each year group in Junior School is supported by a dedicated school counsellor. Parents who have a concern about the wellbeing of their child or wish to explore socialemotional issues related to school life may reach out to their child's class teacher.

Health Centre
Our experienced Nursing Team, part of Coordinated Wellbeing Services, provides healthcare support for children across the whole school, including the Infant, Junior and Senior school. The Junior Health Centre is open from 7:30am to 6:30pm, Monday to Friday, providing care for children who sustain an injury or become unwell during the school day. Our registered nurses work closely with teaching and Junior support staff when children are accompanied to the Health Centre. If a child is not well enough to continue with the school day, or develops symptoms of a contagious illness, they will need to go home to rest and recover. Parents will be contacted and asked to collect their child as promptly as possible. If your child is unwell at home with a fever of 37.8°C or above, and/or any respiratory symptoms or symptoms of a contagious illness, please do not send them to school until they have been symptom-free for 48 hours without the use of medication. If your child has been absent from school due to diarrhoea or vomiting, please also ensure they have been symptom-free for 48 hours before returning to school. This helps reduce the spread of infection and allows sufficient time for recovery. The Nursing Team will notify families of any contagious illnesses circulating within the school community via email or through the weekly newsletter, In Touch. Please feel free to contact the Health Centre if you have any healthrelated questions or concerns regarding your child.
Student Voice
As a Gold Rights Respecting School, Tanglin places children’s rights and student voice at the heart of our learning community. We believe that every child should have opportunities to contribute, lead and help shape their school experience. Every pupil takes on a meaningful position of responsibility within their class or year group, developing confidence, a sense of purpose and pride in making a positive difference. Whether your child is a Rights Rep, House Representative, Recognition Ranger, Legacy Leader or a member of our Student Council, they will meet regularly with a member of staff to develop their leadership skills, share ideas and contribute to school improvement. We actively seek pupils’ views through regular feedback, class discussions, surveys and student forums, ensuring that their perspectives inform decision-making and help us continually enhance school life.
