What Inspired Tanglewood Conservatories’ Love for Maryland’s Eastern Shore?

In honor of Maryland Day, we are taking a moment to reflect on what makes this state special, especially for those of us who are proud to call it home. Maryland is a tapestry woven from rich and diverse history, vibrant cultures, and a spirit of innovation that has thrived for centuries

One of the defining reasons Tanglewood has set its roots on Maryland’s Eastern Shore is its long-standing tradition of craftsmanship, particularly in woodworking and shipbuilding. This region has been synonymous with excellence in these trades for generations, showcasing the skill and artistry of local woodworkers. You can’t help but notice this specialized expertise shine through in our conservatories. We pride ourselves on quality materials and our master artisans, making our work like no other Each piece reflects a commitment to our craft and attention to detail, ensuring that our creations are not just products, but timeless works of art

The Howard Peter Rawlings Conservatory exemplifies the rich tradition of glass architecture that continues to influence modern designs, including our own Its intricate design and historical significance remind us of the beauty that comes with blending artistry, engineering, and nature, which is the very essence of what we strive to create at Tanglewood Conservatories

A Love Letter to Maryland: History, Artistry and Innovation in Conservatory Design

Similarly, the 18th-century Wye House Orangery stands as one of the earliest and most remarkable examples of an orangery in Maryland. Built by wealthy plantation owners, this rare and historic structure was designed to be heated, allowing exotic plants to thrive throughout the year It remains one of the few examples of its kind still standing in the state, offering a glimpse into the luxurious and sophisticated world of the plantation elite The Wye House Orangery’s architectural elegance and its role in shaping the history of Maryland’s garden culture continue to inspire us in our work.

At Tanglewood, we draw on the lessons and inspirations found in these historic landmarks, blending tradition with innovation to create timeless, customdesigned spaces.

Our deep appreciation for these architectural treasures is shared by our non-profit Conservatory Heritage Society, an organization dedicated to preserving and celebrating the history of conservatories and glass structures Through the Society, we aim to keep the legacy of these incredible buildings alive and accessible to future generations.

We are proud to be based in Maryland, where the richness of history and craftsmanship continues to shape and inspire our work. As we continue to create conservatories that reflect this heritage, we celebrate Maryland’s beauty and its enduring influence on the world of architectural design
