In honor of Maryland Day, we are taking a moment to reflect on what makes this state special, especially for those of us who are proud to call it home. Maryland is a tapestry woven from rich and diverse history, vibrant cultures, and a spirit of innovation that has thrived for centuries
One of the defining reasons Tanglewood has set its roots on Maryland’s Eastern Shore is its long-standing tradition of craftsmanship, particularly in woodworking and shipbuilding. A Love Letter to Maryland: History, Artistry and Innovation in Conservatory Design
Similarly, the 18th-century Wye House Orangery stands as one of the earliest and most remarkable examples of an orangery in Maryland. Built by wealthy plantation owners, this rare and historic structure was designed to be heated, allowing exotic plants to thrive throughout the year It remains one of the few examples of its kind still standing in the state, offering a glimpse into the luxurious and sophisticated world of the plantation elite The Wye House Orangery’s architectural elegance and its role in shaping the history of Maryland’s garden culture continue to inspire us in our work.
