FRIENDS, Do you also find inspiration in exploring beautiful, historic architecture? Every year, Nancy and I have been making trips to study some of the world’s most historic landmarks. Since the beginning of Tanglewood – now almost thirty years – it is exciting to see what inspirations Nancy and I are able to bring back and learn from as we collaborate with new firms and clients around the world. From beautiful column details reminiscent of 18th/19th century design to the iconic domes atop many historic churches, each trip fuels our team’s creativity! As always, we are exceptionally grateful for the opportunities to travel and share our discoveries with you. Now that spring has sprung, and beautiful weather is on the horizon we hope to hear about the historic places you plan to visit this year!

Luxury Glass Additions Come in all Shapes and Sizes When you picture your happy place – where are you? What are the sights, sounds, and smells? One of the most rewarding aspects of being a luxury glass designer is collaborating with other high-end professionals to bring unique architectural concepts to life. We get to dream with our clients - to learn what they are passionate about and what's important to them. For a recent client of ours, their happy place is spending time with their large family at the beach! Designed perfectly to suit their family by Kimmel Studios, Tanglewood was excited to partner with them and Horizon Builders to create a glass jewel that captures their happy place. Beauty Lies in The Details From the beautiful coastal views to the soothing sounds of the waves crashing, it's no wonder beach front living is so popular.

Often times to capture that view and bring people closer to nature, expansive window panes and the addition of unique glass features are incorporated into the design of the home. As part of this new home design, that is exactly what the team at Kimmel Studios had in mind. When they reached out to Tanglewood to create a skylight, they wanted a jewel that would live at the heart of the home; something unique that would greatly impact the living space below. Throughout our conversations, they stressed how important having an abundance of natural light pouring in at all hours of the day was to them - so what better place to put the skylight than at the top of a four-story staircase to provide natural light for the entire home?! We hear this a lot with our clients as most have the desire to increase their connection with the outdoors while living in their homes.

For the design of this skylight, it was important for it to have a low pitch and incorporate a nautical theme. After a few iterations, the models to the right show the final design direction! When installation day comes around, it is always an exciting time! The skylight was fully assembled in our shop here on the Eastern Shore of Maryland and was transported to the job site for a final hoist in place. Now with our team off the job site and the remaining touches being completed, the family cannot wait to host their first gathering in the new home! An appreciation Of Conservatory Architecture

HISTORIC CONSERVATORIES OF THE 19TH CENTURY & THE ARCHITECTURE BEHIND THEM! Imagine… living during the great evolution of conservatory design from the 18th to 19th century… what an experience it would have been! In the nineteenth century, Britannia ruled the way things were created. Into England’s ports flowed an array of exotic goods, including plants never before seen in the Old World. By the mid-century, botany was the country’s most popular science, pursued not just by wealthy men but by both sexes of the rising middle class. By the mid-nineteenth century, architects began to explore new ways to design and build conservatories as new technologies and materials became available. The discovery of wrought-iron glazing allowed these curved forms to be produced.

The use of these curvilinear shapes for the building itself devised an unconventional system of glass roof panels that maximized the amount of light to pour through. Much different from the typical build of conservatories people were familiar with such as the Conservatory at Syon Park, Castle Ashby Orangery, and the Conservatories at Kew. As word spread over the next few decades, interest rose in creating a space for more exotic plants to flourish that prior would never have been possible in England’s climate. New techniques to advance the cultivation of food and medicinal plants grew through the use of conservatories and orangeries, allowing the trading of exotic plants and seeds to flourish in England never before. Although functionality was a priority of these glass houses, people began to see the true beauty behind the conservatory and what they could become. These new desires for more creatively designed glasshouses opened new opportunities for architects and builders to break the boundaries of traditional conservatory design to create some of the world’s most beautiful and interesting conservatories that set the stage for future generations. More notable works designed by John Claudius Loudon, Joseph Paxton, Decimus Burton, and Richard Turner are some of the most revolutionary conservatory concepts that were birthed during the time. Richard Turner was an Irish iron founder and manufacturer of glasshouses, born in Dublin. Known as one of the most important glasshouse designers of his time, his works included the Palm House at Kew Gardens, the Curvilinear Range at the Irish National Botanic Gardens, in Ireland and the Palm House at Belfast Botanic Gardens (see below). Turner’s knowledge of the unique uses and abilities of iron allowed these glass houses to be the turning point of conservatory architecture of the 19th century. THE CONSERVATORY: GARDENS UNDER GLASS

WHAT TO CONSIDER WHEN BUILDING A CUSTOM GREENHOUSE Are you one of the many gardeners that get excited to see the first few blooms of the season?

Below, we have compiled a list of things to consider as you embark on getting your own greenhouse:

With birds chirping, flowers blooming, and spring air abound, the excitement can’t be contained! From planting new flowers or sprucing up ones that made it through the harsh winter season, the possibilities are endless for how you can enjoy those spring-filled afternoons. But wouldn’t it be a gardener’s dream to avoid the seasons changing checklists?

How will you use your custom greenhouse?

What gardener doesn’t dream of building their own custom greenhouse to extend their growing season or cultivate delicate and exotic plants throughout the year? Designing and building a greenhouse may seem like a daunting project, but it can actually be a fun process with just a little work, insight, and guidance.

Will you primarily start seedlings and propagate, or do you want to utilize the space to cultivate a more eclectic and perhaps exotic collection? Will this strictly be for your personal potting/planting use, or could perhaps the space also function as an informal entertaining area for family and friends to enjoy your plant collections? Answers to questions like these will help in your planning for size, shape, and the overall need for the space. Where is the perfect location for your greenhouse? Location, location, location! For optimal growing conditions, the best choice for the orientation of your greenhouse is south or southeast.

All-day sunlight is best, and the early morning sunlight jump-starts the photosynthesis process that will then continue throughout the day! If a southern orientation is not possible, the next best is an east-side orientation. Ideally, end walls should face East-West so that the sun runs the ridge from sunrise to sunset. How will you design your custom greenhouse? Wood or Steel? Classic or Modern? One of the great benefits of a custom-built greenhouse is design freedom! Get creative with it – use this as an opportunity to really create something unique to you. Material selection is also a big consideration. Aside from the look, the benefits of wood versus steel can largely depend on your property location, design intent, and overall maintenance tolerance. We would encourage you to speak with an expert to explore which solution would be best for you and ensure potential issues such as moisture, condensation, native insects, etc. can be properly addressed and incorporated into your design so that you can enjoy your greenhouse worry-free for many years. If you are looking for a covering for your greenhouse, you might be interested in exploring a shading system to help control heat gain within the space. Are you incorporating systems into your greenhouse? Greenhouse systems can include everything from automatic watering systems, fog systems, energy/shade curtains, vents, and supplemental lighting to a control system that automatically controls the heating, cooling, lighting, and watering via remote internet access. The level of detail and attention again goes back to how you will use the space and the budget you have allotted. Systems are not required to have a successful growing season in your greenhouse, but they can be a luxury to ensure the environment is optimal for your plants. Are your creative thoughts racing??
