I am truly honored and proud to serve as the current President of the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Foundation.

Thanks to the overwhelming support of our founding members, past board members, donor and community leaders, we are making a lasting impact on the lives of students attending our Island University despite the many unforeseen hurdles we are currently facing. It is in difficult times like these that we must remain steadfast in the commitment to our mission of fostering the growth, quality and efficacy of the University, and I am pleased to report that the Foundation now manages $47 million in its endowment. Through these funds, the Foundation makes tremendous and strategic contributions to the development of the University by funding scholarships, chairs and professorships, scientific research and improvements to classroom technology. While we work together in the face of adversity, we want to continue to celebrate the great achievements of our University, including attaining R2 status which validates our capabilities as a premier research institution and allows us to continue to innovate, it is your ongoing support that is imperative to help our students continue their paths to graduation, and integral to further strengthening our influential reach as a premiere research institution.

STUDENT SPOTLIGHT

Jazmine Flores:

THE BEGINNING OF A FAMILY LEGACY A first-generation college student, Jazmine Flores came to Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi from a small town south of Houston to study finance with a focus in management information systems.

She chose the Island University because of scholarships she received – including the Jessie Frances Neal Foundation Scholarship – which cover the entirety of her college costs. She still remembers the day she learned she would be receiving her scholarship.

“The first thing I did was call my mom and cry,” said Flores, who is now in her senior year. “I didn’t want to be a financial burden to my family. When I received this news, I knew it was an opportunity I couldn’t pass up.”

Flores said her father, originally from Mexico, dropped out of school to provide for his family.

“My dad told me he never imagined having a daughter attending a university, and he’s thrilled I’m able to do so,” she added. “I will be the first Flores in my family to graduate with a college degree, which is a huge honor and responsibility. Now, my little sister and cousins are always asking me about school and get excited to tell me where they want to go and what they want to do.”

One of Flores’ favorite memories as an Islander was when she received her class ring.

“The importance of my class ring is massive,” Flores said. “I remember waiting so my parents could put my ring on me for the first time after the ring ceremony. They are my biggest supporters and motivators.”

Flores is incredibly thankful to Mrs. Neal for making an investment in her career and future. Mrs. Neal is an iconic Texas businesswoman and philanthropist who has provided scholarships to Islander business students. She has helped 28 Islander students graduate, with 30 more currently receiving funding as they work toward their degrees.

In recognition of her outstanding contributions to the Island University, Mrs. Neal was awarded an Honorary Doctorate of Humane Letters during the university’s Spring 2019 commencement ceremony. This recognition is in tribute to her dedication to furthering the accessibility of higher education for young leaders, as well as her commitment to education as evidenced through her own

determination and success in becoming a businesswoman and reflects the values that we hold at A&M-Corpus Christi, the state of Texas, and the United States of America.

Mrs. Neal, who has spent more than five decades working in the oil industry, serves as inspiration for Flores, who plans to enter the business industry as a financial advisor upon her graduation in December 2020.

“I see Mrs. Neal as a mentor.

She’s so kind and is always interested in the lives and success of us Neal Scholars,” Flores said. “She is making an investment in us, and I hope one day I can make an impact comparable to hers.”

I am so happy to be able to contribute in some small way to the success of our future leaders in this great community, my hometown. I moved away for 18 years, but my heart remained here, and this is my small way to help this community be the best it can be.

I started my career at a junior college and one of the biggest goals they had for me there was to play basketball at a high level and keep my grades up so I would qualify for a scholarship. Getting a scholarship was a great goal because it meant I made it both on the court and in school. My brother went to A&M-Corpus Christi, and all I heard about was how great an experience he had. I thought one day, that was going to be me too. The scholarship I received and having a spot on this team made it happen. I love this school and wouldn’t want to be anywhere else.
