FOUNDATION PRESIDENT'S LETTER

Dear Islanders, AS THE PRESIDENT OF THE TEXAS A&M-CORPUS CHRISTI

Foundation, I have the privilege of serving our Islander community. The Island continues to make a vital impact on the lives of our students thanks to the steadfast support of our founding members, past board members, donors, and community leaders. I am pleased to report that the Foundation now manages $55 million in its endowment. With these funds, the Foundation makes strategic contributions to the development of the University by funding scholarships, chairs and professorships, scientific research, and improvements to classroom technology. By making these contributions to our Island University, we are in turn changing the face of the future of our community. We continue to celebrate the great achievements of our University while we work together to better it. Under the leadership of Dr. Kelly M. Miller, President and CEO of Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi, we ensure every student’s success by eliminating hindrances and fortifying the partnership between the Coastal Bend and the University. We are committed to the promise that the education and experience provided to our students will extend to the whole community through their Islander Impact. Working alongside Dr. Miller has shown me that the future of our community can be found at the heart of the Island, in its students. The Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Foundation sincerely thanks you for all you do for Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi, its students, and the entire Islander community. Sincerely,

TIM STEPHENS President, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Foundation

THE FRAZIER FAMILY FOUNDATION, INC. It’s a Family Affair

8

DONOR SPOTLIGHT

FROM HUMBLE BEGINNINGS TO

running a thriving family business, the Frazier family believes in investing in the next generation. Family patriarch Lynn Frazier, in partnership with his two sons, Garrett ’04 and Derrick ’08, along with their wives Ryan ’12 and Trish ’04, founded the Frazier Family Foundation, Inc. in 2018 to foster inspiring opportunities for education, innovation, and aspirations in youth and young adults throughout the Coastal Bend. The family also owns and operates Frazier Companies, which also started in 2018. Frazier Companies is a group that manages entities in the hospitality, real estate, and capital management industries. The company currently resides in the Coastal Bend. “I know firsthand how hard it is to pursue your college education and keep your head above water,” Lynn said. “That’s why we do what we can to help those in pursuit of their education. We want to inspire them to view a scholarship as a hand-up in life given to them by someone who believes in their goals.” Garrett and Derrick graduated from TAMU-CC’s College of Business, with Garrett earning a degree in marketing and Derrick earning a degree in finance. The brothers say their time as students, and now as proud alumni, encouraged them to support the next generation of Islanders. “Attending the Island University was such a unique experience for both of us. We grew up in Oklahoma, so we never had palm trees or the shoreline,” Garrett said. “Seeing the university grow has inspired us to give back and be involved.”

“While in school, I studied really hard, and I tried my best, but grades alone weren’t going to take me where I wanted to go,” Lynn said. “A professor of mine saw my drive and told me, ‘You know Lynn, it’s not just the grades you make, it’s also the hands you shake,’ and all through my life, in every venture that turned to success, I shook people’s hands the whole way.” Following the sale of Magnum Oil Tools, the Fraziers say the development of the Frazier Family Foundation, Inc. was a natural evolution and the perfect opportunity to “shake hands” with the Coastal Bend. In the last two years, the Foundation has donated more than $200,000 to Texas A&M UniversityCorpus Christi. Recent grant funding will support TAMU-CC need-based student scholarships for four years, as well as a graphic design camp that will propel college and career readiness for underserved high school students. Past grants have supported marine mammal research, K-12 educational outreach initiatives, and the TAMU-CC Honors Program. “When my dad first wanted to attend college, he was told ‘no’ because his family couldn’t afford it,” Derrick said. “He was able to work hard and earn a scholarship to complete his education, and that part of his story is what inspired us to make sure

no other students are told ‘no.’ We hope that no one gets left out of the chance to grow and move up in life. We want to help them live out their life’s ambition.” Ryan and Trish, who both serve on the advisory committee of the Frazier Family Foundation, Inc., say creating equal opportunity creates a better community. “While attending A&M-Corpus Christi, both Garrett and I got our first real taste of what it felt like to be a part of something bigger than ourselves — a community of Islanders and friends that have lasted a lifetime,” said Trish, who graduated Summa Cum Laude with a Bachelor of Arts in Communication from TAMU-CC. “Having a chance to give back to something that gave us so much is a full-circle moment.” Reflecting on the true rewards of their philanthropy, Ryan, who earned an MBA from TAMU-CC, says she can’t imagine a life where she’s not giving back. “It’s seeing the excitement on the faces of the students we impact,” Ryan said. “It’s really something so simple, but it brings so much joy to each person in this organization. All of us have our own children too, and we want to leave them this legacy — to lead by example and action.”

Lynn, who graduated from Texas A&M University-Kingsville in 1978 with a degree in agriculture – range and wildlife management, is the former President and CEO of Magnum Oil Tools International. Beyond his success in business, he says one of his biggest accomplishments is teaching his family the importance of investing in others. 9

ISLANDERS BASEBALL PLAYER JOSH CARAWAY Success on and off the Diamond

10

STUDENT SPOTLIGHT

LONG HOURS OF BASEBALL PRACTICE,

combined with a full academic course load and late-night study sessions, can present an incredibly daunting task for any student-athlete, but Josh Caraway ’22 is up for the challenge. Caraway, a finance major and Islanders Baseball catcher and left fielder, excels as both a skilled athlete and university scholar. Initially drawn to Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi by its Division I athletic programs, Caraway, who hails from a small town outside of Fort Worth, has come to love living on the Island. “Corpus Christi has everything I need,” Caraway said. “The coastal setting was something that I was not entirely familiar with, but I wanted to try something new. It turns out that I have fully bought into the Island life!”

Caraway was also selected to the 2022 Preseason Southland Caraway, now a senior, has maintained All-Conference team. “I believe that making the most of your abilities while a student-athlete will not only benefit you and your career, but it also helps set up future generations for success.” “I cannot express enough how humbled and honored I feel to have received these scholarships,” Caraway said. “They have not only relieved a burden off my shoulders, but also the burden off my parents’ shoulders who have done everything in their power to help me achieve my goals, and to whom I am eternally grateful.”

Caraway has also dedicated time to multiple student organizations. He was a founding member of the TAMU-CC Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA) and he served on both the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee and the Intercollegiate Athletics Council.

to meet new people, engage in extracurricular activities, exercise, and make a difference in the lives of those around you.” Though Caraway is not the first in his family to pursue a degree in higher education, he is proud to be the first Islander in his family, forging a path all his own at the Island University. “To me, being an Islander means that I have the opportunity to receive a great education while being surrounded by professors, advisors, donors, coaches, and peers who want the best for my future,” Caraway said. “TAMU-CC is one of the most unique places in the country and I invite others to join this Island community.”

“I believe that making the most of your abilities while a student-athlete will not only benefit you and your career, but it also helps set up future generations for success,” Caraway said. “Balance is what it’s all about. Do what you can to learn as much as possible, but also make sure you are giving yourself the opportunity

"For students to be academically successful, it is crucial for them to be financially stable. My scholarship helps me stay focused on my studies and relieves financial pressures. My scholarship makes it possible for me to study full time and opens the door for me to find an internship or start a research project to be more competitive in the workplace. In the future, I plan to become a surgeon. I want to think that I helped the world become a better and safer place for everyone." Amine Khodja '23, Electrical Engineering and Chemistry

"I am so incredibly grateful to be a scholarship recipient. Without the assistance, I would not be able to buy the art supplies needed to continue my studio courses. Art is my work, my hobby, and my life. I am on course to enter a master's program in art therapy. I have seen during the pandemic how art changes people's lives — how they use it as catharsis during these trying and uncertain times. I am extremely excited to become a part of what art has to offer in healing the world." Kimberly Luther '22, Art
