TYPES OF FINANCIAL AID

STEPS TO APPLY

Financial aid comes in many forms and includes funds offered at the federal, state and institutional level. Financial aid is awarded based on the information you provided on your Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) or Texas Application for State Financial Assistance (TASFA). Award packages can consist of scholarships, grants, loans and/or work-study opportunities.

1. Get your FSA ID at studentaid.gov. You’ll need your FSA ID to sign your FAFSA during the application process. Parents will also need a FSA ID to sign the FAFSA and to apply for a Parent Plus Loan. A social security number is required to establish an FSA ID.

Scholarships are awarded based on academic merit combined with financial need and do not need to be repaid.

Grants are awarded based on financial need and do not need to be repaid.

Loans are funds that must be repaid over a period of time, usually after you leave school and usually with interest.

•

Work-study is funding awarded based on financial need that you may earn by working at a part-time job on or off campus.

ARE YOU ELIGIBLE TO RECEIVE FINANCIAL AID? Eligibility for financial aid is based on financial and household information that is reported on the FAFSA or TASFA. Since grant funding is limited, priority is given to early applicants.

The FAFSA is available for all U.S. citizens and eligible non-citizens. The FAFSA opens October 1 for the following school year at fafsa.gov and the priority date is January 15.

The Texas Application for State Financial Aid (TASFA) is available for all non-U.S. citizens who are Texas residents.

a. If you do not have a social security number but are an eligible state resident, you may be able to apply for state aid through the submission of a TASFA. You can find this form on our website at osfa.tamucc.edu.

2. Complete and submit the FAFSA. The application is available online at studentaid.gov under “Apply for Aid.” 3. Submit verification materials (if requested). If your FAFSA requires verification, you will be asked to submit the additional requested paperwork. A list of required documents

can be accessed on the SAIL student portal at sail.tamucc.edu. Processing takes two to three weeks but can be longer during peak season.

4. Receive award notification. Award notification will be sent to the student’s University and personal email addresses.

Award information will also be posted on the student’s SAIL account.

5. Accept your aid. If you are accepting a loan, you will need to complete loan counseling and sign a Master Promissory Note (MPN) at studentaid.gov under “Complete Aid Process” before a loan can be disbursed. Counseling is required for all students who take out loans. Instructions are available at osfa.tamucc.edu/guarantee_loan.html.

ESTIMATED DIRECT COSTS The figures below are combined estimated costs for a typical full-time student attending both the fall and spring semesters. An estimated cost of attendance per semester can be calculated by dividing the amounts reflected below in half.

Please note that these figures are subject to change and can vary by student, based on living accommodations, meal plans, and area of study.

Note: All first-year, first-time borrowers must wait 30 days after the semester has started before receiving any federal student loan funds (unsubsidized and subsidized).

Based on course load for undergraduate students of 15 credit hours per semester (30 credit hours for academic year) and course load for graduate students of 9 credit hours (18 per academic year). Actual tuition and fees will vary depending on the college and courses taken.

Charges are an estimate and will vary depending on housing and meal plan selections.

An estimated cost of books and supplies for 30 credit hours for the academic year.

FINANCIAL AID FOR TRANSFER STUDENTS

Transfer students are eligible for grants, scholarships, work-study, and student loans.

If you received TEXAS Grant or TEOG at another institution and are now planning to attend TAMU-CC, you must submit the Texas Grant Renewal Transfer Form. Transfer forms, which allow us to confirm your eligibility, are reviewed when the state database is updated each fall, typically in November. Awards may be delayed. Transfer Pathways to receive Texas Grant • Associate Degree Pathway: Enrollment in an eligible institution in which the student earned an associate degree from a public or private nonprofit Texas institution of higher education.

• Honorable Military Discharge Pathway: Enrollment in an eligible institution of higher education within 12 months after being honorably discharged from military service.

Work-Study: Graduate students are eligible to receive work-study to supplement their finances and get paid while earning real life job experience on campus.
