ALY BAIN & PHIL CUNNINGHAM BBC National Folk Awards ‘Best Duo’ 2005 Give a warm welcome back to Mwldan for these two legendary ambassadors of Scottish Traditional Music. Aly Bain is Scotland’s supreme traditional style fiddler. His playing is unique - driving, impassioned and pure - with a vibrant, unmistakable tone that has earned him a following of ardent fans throughout the world. He helped establish the folk band Boys of the Lough and in addition to his solo albums he has appeared on albums by Hue and Cry, Eddie Reader, Richard Thomson and Fish. Aly has received many honours for his services to music, including four Doctorates and an M.B.E. ‘I had never heard the clarity of tone or the beauty. ...I had never heard the passion.’ Billy Connolly Aly has toured and recorded with brilliant accordionist/composer Phil Cunningham since 1988. Widely regarded as one of the most exciting and innovative accordion players of the times, Phil Cunningham has set the standards by which many young players fix their sights today. His early work with leading Scots band Silly Wizard (1976-1986) reclaimed a place for the instrument in traditional music and his astonishing dexterity and musicality has delighted audiences across the world. Phil was awarded the MBE in 2002 for services to Scottish Music and was voted Best Instrumentalist in the inaugural Scottish Traditional Music Awards in 2003.

AN EVENING OF ONE ACT PLAYS Long Autumn Long Autumn, appropriately named, is a retirement home for theatricals in the autumn of their lives, where euphemism reigns supreme together with a firm belief that elderly equals senile. Into their midst is flung Maisie May, a former music-hall star and too much of a burden for her strait-laced son and daughter-in-law, who do not find Maisie amusing. Initially, the evercheerful Maisie copes with the rigours of Long Autumn in her own inimitable style but she becomes increasingly depressed. Two foppish suitors travelling to a country manor house are tricked into believing it to be a tavern in a practical joke played by the irresponsible and irrepressible Tony Lumpkin. Upon arrival the dandies treat their host, the long-suffering Mr Hardcastle, like an innkeeper. But this works to the advantage of his pretty and intelligent daughter Kate, who cleverly disguises herself as a bar-maid in order to win the heart of her disastrously tongue-tied suitor. Cult Welsh theatre company Mappa Mundi have built a reputation for gloriously irreverent, populist and accessible adaptations of classic theatrical and literary works and you can expect an original and flamboyant take on Oliver Goldsmith’s classic social comedy. LONDON MOZART PLAYERS THE CABINET OF DR. CALIGARI Great music and great cinema combine in a very special performance by the UK’s longest-established chamber orchestra, which was founded in 1949 by the great Harry Blech. Evoking the golden age of silent movies, ten musicians will perform live music by Welsh composer Lynne Plowman to the silent film The Cabinet of Dr Caligari. Released in 1920, it is regarded as one of the most influential German expressionist films and also the first true horror film. It tells the tale of Dr Caligari and his sleepwalking friend Cesare, a carnival attraction who prophesizes someone’s death. From the very opening scene, seemingly suspended in an otherworldly dimension, you realise you are in for a spooky ride, and the plot twists and turns to bring the film to an unexpected end. Lynne Plowman first found recognition as a composer in 1995 when Blue for Symphony Orchestra won the BBC National Orchestra of Wales Young Composers Competition. Since then, her work has been increasingly performed throughout the UK and further afield, and is regularly featured on BBC Radio. Show of Hands are undeniably one of the strongest current forces in acoustic music, England’s finest and most popular roots duo and something of a “people’s band”, regularly voicing the hopes, fears and life stories of scores of people in song. An alchemist couldn’t have come up with a more potent, magical mix than that of Phil Beer, who can, as The Scotsman observed, “play nearly every stringed instrument known to man” and the inspired Steve Knightley, described by Mike Harding at BBC Radio 2’s 2007 Folk Awards as “one of England’s greatest singer songwriters”. In 1996, despite an escalating fan base, the guys still couldn’t command London gigs. So they thought they’d create a modest one of their own – at the Royal Albert Hall! Taking a huge gamble, they hired ‘Kensington’s Village Hall’ to the amusement of the media and the cynicism of sceptics, but had the last laugh, with a sold out show. They repeated this feat an incredible third time on their 15th anniversay in 2007, a testament to the huge popularity of their sound, which continues to dodge musical genres and puzzle the music industry.

LE TRIO JOUBRAN Samir Joubran oud Wissam Joubran oud Adnan Joubran oud Yousef Hbeisch percussion Following their stunning UK premiere in Wales three years ago, we are thrilled to welcome back Le Trio Joubran. These three young Palestinian brothers – Samir, Wissam and Adnan - are sons of a master oud craftsman from the Biblical city of Nazareth, and the world’s only oud trio. They are joined by virtuoso percussionist Yousef Hbeisch whose artistic contribution brings a new depth and richness to their music. With their skillful, heart-wrenching improvisations that evoke the landscape, culture and people of Palestine, the trio conjour up harmony and sweetness, depth and joy. On stage, their eyes meet and their instruments unite to express that which the spoken word cannot. Between musical ecstasy and sumptuous silence, the trio carries its audience from elation to melancholy. Their overwhelming stage performances are both precise and overflowing with emotions that will take your breath away.

All three brothers are virtuosos, but Wissam, aged 25 is exceptional as the first stringed instrument maker from the Arab World to graduate from the Antonio Stradivari Institute in Italy. Wissam personally crafted the three brother instruments played by the trio, bringing a total of six brothers to the stage! Together, they form a mesmerising musical unit with an intense connection, punctuating meditative melodies with fiery, percussive rhythms and contemplative, poignant silences. Their repertoire, made up of original creations and magnificent improvisations, is rooted in their knowledge of traditional maqâms and their subtle interpretations. But they are also influenced by contemporary flamenco and jazz guitarists such as John McLaughlin. Since being nominated for the 2004 Django d’Or awards, selected for Womex 2004 and Strictly Mundial 2005, the trio has been living a musical adventure taking them all over the world including Carnegie Hall in 2006, and the Jerusalem Festival and WOMAD in 2007. DEVON SPROULE PLUS SPECIAL GUEST ROD THOMAS 25 year-old Virginian singer-songwriter Devon Sproule has a growing following for her sunny, warm and funny alternative pop, lingering just where the meandering lanes of folk, country and lightly swinging jazz intersect. Joyful, elegant and cheeky in equal measure, her music is deliciously unhurried, redolent of high-summer dog-day afternoons and balmy southern nights in her home town of Charlottesville, a picturepostcard college town just east of Virginia’s Blue Ridge mountains. She was raised nearby in an eco-village, where she grew up surrounded by musicians and learnt her trade. Her very original, carefully crafted songs are rendered so eloquently and delivered so unaffectedly that it’s extremely difficult not to buy into the dream.

ROOM ON THE BROOM Tall Stories are back at Mwldan with their brand new production of the much loved story book, Room on the Broom. How the cat purred and how the witch grinned, as they sat on their broomstick and flew through the wind… The witch and her cat are flying happily on their broomstick – until a stormy wind blows away the witch’s hat, bow and wand. A helpful dog, bird and frog find the witch’s lost things, and they all hop on the broom for a ride. But this broomstick’s not meant for five and – CRACK – the broom snaps in two! When a hungry dragon appears, who will save the poor witch? And will there ever be room on the broom for everyone?

From playing Celtic Connections to the Cambridge Folk Festival, the band’s live performances have always been truly special, allowing audiences to enjoy the sheer energy as well as subtlety of his music.

In addition to McGoldrick, the band’s line up includes Donald Shaw on keyboards, James McIntosh on drums, Ewen Vernal on bass, Dezi Donnelly on fiddle, Ed Boyd on guitar and John Jo Kelly on bodhran.

BILLY BRAGG Twenty five years on, Billy Bragg arrives in Wales on a special 9-date solo tour to remember the Miners’ Strike and its legacy on the communities across Wales. Ex-punk, ex-soldier, and ex-member of the Labour Party, Billy Bragg rose from working class origins in the 1980s to become one of the UK’s foremost pop and protest singers and left-wing icons. It was Margaret Thatcher who propelled the Bard of Barking into action; Bragg’s defining political moment came with the Miners’ Strike of 1984-5, when the Conservative government set out to lay waste to Britain’s industrial heartlands, crippling communities and livelihoods in the process. Bragg became a fixture at political rallies and benefits, particularly during the Strike, with his powerful pro-union songs including Which Side Are You On, There Is Power In A Union and the EP title track Between The Wars. A rebel in every sense, Bragg is best-known for his passionately political lyrics, but also admired for his offbeat love songs. This unique man continues to prove that music still has something to say about political causes, and, thank goodness, has a sense of humour. Theatr Mwldan presents its traditional summer outdoor performances at the Welsh Wildlife Centre, Cilgerran in partnership with The Wildlife Trust of South and West Wales. The performances are presented on a site with panoramic views of the Teifi Marshes, adjacent to the Wildlife Centre building which offers meals and refreshments in The Glasshouse Café, plus gift shop and toilets. A limited amount of seating for these performances is available - please bring your own low-backed seating or rug and warm clothes. The Glasshouse Café is open for meals prior to the show (bookings on 01239 621600), or bring a picnic to enjoy! The Wildlife Centre will be open two and a half hours before each performance; the performance site opens for picnics one hour before. Performances continue in all but the very worst weather. Once the bad boys of folk and rock, Oysterband have grown over the past five years into the role of godfathers of folk roots. Influenced by all manner of music, culture and style, the heartbeat of the band is a deep-rooted love of the traditional music of Britain, a tradition that deals in integrity, passion, human experience and human emotion - songs that made you want to dance, laugh, cry, jump for joy – even start a fight! From their early days in the mid 80s, the Oysters have grabbed folk by the scruff of the neck and shaken furiously. This, alongside some vitriolic social commentaries from their own pens, got up quite a few noses and dented the veneer of sweetness and light which was strangling pop and rock at the time. At every turn since, they’ve steadfastly followed their own instincts, gloriously disregarding irrelevancies such as image, musical boundaries and media hype, and even collaborating with the high priestess of English folk song, June Tabor. Oyster trademarks - a folk ear for a great vocal tune, strong lyrics, wry politics, big dynamics, a sense of musical theatre and a deepdown musicality that can afford to take itself fairly lightly - have helped them to become one of the most irresistible bands of the last decade.

As Head of Public Programmes at the National Library of Wales, Michael Francis has been involved from the very first in the Wales Portrait Award. He has had responsibility for the Library’s art collection and its exhibition programme including retrospectives for major Welsh artists. Students will be manning the exhibition during the weeks and are available to talk about their work and their course. Each year, this exhibition showcases the best of members’ work and forms a popular event in Oriel Mwldan’s calendar. Cardigan Art Society’s members continue to encourage emerging and established visual artists, most of whom live and work in Cardigan and the surrounding areas of west Wales. Original works are for sale at affordable prices and include painting, drawing, printmaking, ceramics and photography. After the Italian surrender in North Africa, 1,500 Prisoners Of War were transported to Wales and housed at POW Camp 70 at Henllan, in the Teifi Valley near Newcastle Emlyn. There, inside a plasterboard hut, the Italians built a church; La Casa di Dio tells the story of that most unlikely and unique relic.
