The Royal Opera House’s 2012/13 live Cinema Season opens with Anthony Dowell’s production of Swan Lake, created for The Royal Ballet in 1987.

ROYAL BALLET LIVE

From the earliest days of the Vic-Wells Ballet, Swan Lake has been one of The Royal Ballet’s signature works. In creating this production, Anthony Dowell aimed to return to an authentic version of the choreography created by the great Marius Petipa and Lev Ivanov for the Mariinsky Theatre in 1895. Yolanda Sonnabend’s designs draw on the Russian Imperial Court of that period with an inspired blend of historical accuracy and gothic fantasy. The court scenes of Acts I and III have a dark glamour rooted in the opulent style of Carl Faberge, while the famous lakeside ‘white’ acts are rich with mist, shadow and moonlight. Yn ddiau’r bale rhamantus fwyaf oll, mae Swan Lake yn gyfosodiad perffaith o goreograffi a cherddoriaeth. He vastly outspends his resources but, finding his coffers empty, reassures his loyal steward that all will be well. When he calls upon his associates, instead of offering help, they hang him out to dry. After a final, vengeful banquet, Timon withdraws to a literal and emotional wasteland, living off roots and pouring curses on a morally bankrupt Athens. Simon Russell Beale has been described by the Independent as ‘the greatest stage actor of his generation.’ His recent work for the National Theatre includes London Assurance, Much Ado About Nothing and Collaborators, John Hodge’s Olivier Award-winning new play in which he portrayed Stalin. JOE DRISCOLL & SEKOU KOUYATE “He doesn’t speak any French, and I speak no English... but through music, we understand.”- Sekou Kouyate Joe Driscoll first met Sekou Kouyate when they collaborated at the French festival ‘Nuit Metis’ (Nights of Mixed Race) in Marseilles. Sekou Kouyate, originally from Conakry, Guinea was raised in a large musical family tradition. In France he is known as the ‘Jimi Hendrix of the kora’. He has toured the world over with the band Ba Cissoko, comprised of his cousin and brothers. Joe Driscoll, the man Cee-Lo Green labeled ‘the gangsta with an iron lung’ has been touring steadily for years. The modern day take on the one man band, he creates soundscapes full of beatbox, guitar, harmonica, percussion, didjerido, and just about anything else he can find! He has performed at Glastonbury, Electric Picnic in Ireland, and Lake of Stars in Malawi, Africa. These two musicians from opposite ends of the earth have found a special type of musical brotherhood- a mad fusion of afrobeat, hip-hop, folk, and reggae, that defies any simple tags or description and ignores convention and boundaries completely. Frankie Gavin is one of the genuine legends of Irish music. From his first TV appearance playing the tin-whistle when he was six, to seven solo albums, his adventures in the realms of Jazz, Gospel, and Klezmer, through to appearances and recordings with such luminaries as Earl Scruggs, Stephane Grapelli, Sir Yehudi Menuhin, and the ‘Rolling Stones’, ‘the prince of Irish fiddlers’ is one of the outstanding performers of the past thirty years. Frankie is also the original founding member and band leader of internationally acclaimed traditional super group ‘De Dannan’, the band responsible for bringing singers Dolores Keane, Mary Black, Maura O Connell and Tommy Fleming, amongst many others, to international prominence.

60s icon, Rodney Bewes (star of The Likely Lads), is celebrating 60 years in the entertainment industry. To mark his own diamond jubilee, Rodney returns to Mwldan with a brand new one man show, As A Boy Growing Up.

These workers are the ‘philanthropists’ who lament the passing of craftsmanship and throw themselves into back-breaking work for low - and shrinking wages in order to generate profit for their masters. TOM MATHIAS: FOTOGRAFFYDD BRO This remarkable collection of photographs represents the work of two exceptionally gifted photographers from different eras and very different backgrounds. The originals were taken by Tom Mathias, a self-taught photographer, at the turn of the 20th Century. Using simple equipment, Tom Mathias recorded the daily life around the Cilgerran district of Dyfed, west Wales. Following Mathias’s death in 1940 all his negatives were dumped in an outhouse, where they lay, forgotten, for more than thirty years. James Maxwell Davis, a professional photographer living in the area, discovered them in the 1970s. The glass negatives were in a very poor condition but appreciating the significance of what he had found, Maxwell set about the painstaking task of conserving and restoring the photographs. It is thanks to these efforts that Tom Mathias’s remarkable photographs have been saved for posterity, and we are delighted to bring such a locally important collection to Oriel Mwldan. ::

Cafodd y ffotograffau gwreiddiol eu cymryd gan Tom Mathias, ffotograffydd a ddysgodd ei hun, ar droad yr 20fed Ganrif. Gan ddefnyddio offer syml, recordiodd Tom Mathias bywyd beunyddiol o gwmpas ardal Cilgerran, Dyfed, Gorllewin Cymru. Yn dilyn marwolaeth Mathias ym 1940, cafodd ei holl negatifau eu taflu allan i sied, lle wnaethant aros, heb eu darganfod, am fwy na 30 blynedd. Ym 1970, gwnaeth James Maxwell Davies, ffotograffydd proffesiynol yn byw yn yr ardal eu darganfod. Roedd y negatifau gwydr mewn cyflwr gwael iawn. Roedd nifer wedi torri neu eu niweidio’n rhy wael i’w trwsio. SUSAN ADAMS, WELCOME MACHINE Susan Adams uses a variety of media including painting, printmaking, polychromed wood-carving and video. She Studied painting at the Slade and Norwich School of Art, also Electronic Art at Middlesex University. Currently teaching at Cardiff Metropolitan University, she has lectured widely and held a number of prestigious Artist in Residency positions including those at Gloucester Cathedral, Millay Colony for the Arts New York, Welsh National Opera, Bardsey Island and Shaftesbury Abbey. :: Mae Susan Adams yn defnyddio amrywiaeth o gyfryngau gan gynnwys peintio, gwneud printiau, cerfio coed amryliw a fideo. One of the voice-hearers said that “hearing voices feels like picking up peoples’ thoughts on the ether”. This struck me as highly relevant to the age of mobile phones and the internet as we are now all transmitters and receivers of information, invisible information that comes from the sky” Susan Adams.

Fronted by the charismatic and anarchic rebel poet David R. Edwards, the group came to define what Tyˆ Gwydr’s Gareth Potter calls ‘the soul of the Welsh underground scene’ in the 1980s. Datblygu’s acidic take on modern Wales - the artistic bourgeoisie and politicians were typical targets - liberated a whole generation of bands and artists. Five Peel Sessions with legendary Radio 1 DJ John Peel is some measure of the effect they had on the converted. Championed by Peel but ironically ignored by mainstream Welsh media, the band was part of an energetic underground scene which also included Y Cyrff, Yr Anhrefn, Ffa Coffi Pawb and Llwybr Llaethog, in a random alliance which re-defined Welsh language popular music. KILLING THEM SOFTLY (18) Andrew Dominik | 2012 | USA | 97’ Brad Pitt stars in this adaptation of the George V Higgins 1970s crime novel which drags its down-and-dirty story of poker games, petty criminals and the mob to 2008 and pulls off the clever trick of operating as both gangster movie and satire. Little fish swim with sharks: two dreamy, penniless young crims, Frankie and Russell, shoot up a backroom poker game run by Markie. Soon they have a cool and calm mob fixer, Jackie, on their tail, who in turn hires an assassin, Mickey. It’s all defiantly male, but it’s also pleasingly anti-macho and presents the world of gangsters as a chaotic mess forever undermined by failure and human fallibility.
