WELCOME TO MWLDAN CROESO I’R MWLDAN Dear Friends,

Annwyl ffrindiau,

Well that was a busy year for the Mwldan family! On top of our in-house programme (with over 3000 screenings, live events and broadcasts, 9 exhibitions and roughly 2500 courses and classes taking place in the building over the course of the year) we had another fantastic summer season at the Castle with acts including Gwenno, Huw Stephens, Legend, Tra Bo Dau and Mark Steel.

Wel, dyna oedd blwyddyn brysur i deulu’r Mwldan!

Ar ben ein rhaglen fewnol (gyda thros 3000 o sgriniadau, digwyddiadau a darllediadau byw, 9 arddangosfa a thua 2500 o gyrsiau a dosbarthiadau yn cael eu cynnal yn yr adeilad ar hyd y flwyddyn) cawsom dymor gwych arall yn y Castell gydag actau’n cynnwys Gwenno, Huw Stephens, Legend, Tra Bo Dau a Mark Steel.

It was also a bumper year for the musicians we work with on our record label, bendigedig. Following the release of the albums Tro and SOAR, we won numerous awards and accolades, topped the charts and sold out at venues, across the UK and beyond (see pages 4-5 for information about our releases and tours).

And 2019 promises to be no less exciting…

Look out for our new release on bendigedig in May from AKA Trio (Antonio Forcione, Seckou Keita & Adriano Adewale) followed by a UK tour in November and more national and international tour dates for Catrin & Seckou throughout the year.

We have the first of the Castle season events announced in this brochure (p. 26-27) with lots of further events to be announced in the coming months. Do sign-up to our mailing list and follow us on social media to be the first to hear our special announcements, we promise, you won’t be disappointed!!

We were sorry to miss out on Arts Council of Wales funding for our visual arts programme, but will be taking this opportunity (alongside some other changes to be announced), to have a think about how we best organise ourselves and our spaces to ensure that we are the best that we can possibly be for you!

And that will all be in addition to our usual programme of excellent live music, theatre, dance, comedy and film.

THE QUEEN OF SPADES In Tchaikovsky’s intense opera of obsession and the supernatural, Gherman is caught between the woman he loves and a destructive fixation.

The Queen of Spades is based on a short story by Pushkin, and comes to the Royal Opera House in a new production that has already garnered five star reviews in Amsterdam. This is an engrossing portrayal of a tortured creative artist and a gripping piece of gothic storytelling.

Bassekou Kouyate is one of the true masters of the ngoni, an ancient traditional lute found throughout West Africa, and is respected as one of Africa’s premier global artists. His band, Ngoni Ba, includes three ngoni players (featuring ngonis with differing tonal sizes), two percussionists and the fantastic singer Amy Sacko. Bassekou has collaborated with the likes of Ali Farka Toure, Toumani Diabate and Taj Mahal, and joined Seckou Keita on the Africa Express tour in 2016 along with Damon Albarn and Paul Weller. Incredible dexterity and stunning music from one of Africa’s music visionaries.

LA TRAVIATA Richard Eyre’s beautiful production provides the perfect setting for Verdi’s opera about a courtesan who sacrifices all for love.

From the thrill of unexpected romance to a heartbreaking reconciliation that comes too late – Verdi’s La traviata is one of the most popular of all operas. Alfredo falls in love in with the courtesan Violetta in glamorous Paris society, but underneath the surface run darker undercurrents, leading to a tragic ending. The opera’s wealth of melodies includes the famous Brindisi and the exuberant Sempre libera – both showing the lyricism of Italian opera at its most immediately appealing. Richard Eyre’s production for The Royal Opera brings out all the emotional colour, from the giddy discovery of love, through painful confrontation to the inevitable conclusion. Lavish period sets and costumes enhance the reality of a moving story based on true life.

I’m Not Running is an explosive new play by David Hare. Pauline Gibson has spent her life as a doctor, the inspiring leader of a local health campaign. When she crosses paths with her old boyfriend, a stalwart loyalist in Labour Party politics, she’s faced with an agonising decision.

What’s involved in sacrificing your private life and your piece of mind for something more than a single issue? Does she dare?

Hare was recently described by The Washington Post as ‘the premiere political dramatist writing in English’. His other work includes Pravda and Skylight, broadcast by National Theatre Live in 2014.

GRACE PETRIE Grace Petrie’s unique take on life, love and politics, and the warmth and wit with which they are delivered, have won over an army of loyal fans across the alternative, folk, political and comedy scenes. She’s toured with Billy Bragg and Frank Turner, supported comedians Robin Ince and Josie Long, and collaborated with Leon Rosselson and Peggy Seeger. She is a frequent guest on BBC Radio 4’s the Now Show and has appeared on Channel 4’s Random Acts.

Her new album Queer As Folk was released Sept ’18.

YOUNG PICASSO Pablo Picasso is one of the greatest artists of all time - and right up until his death in 1973 he was the most prolific of artists. Many films have dealt with these later years - the art, the affairs and the wide circle of friends. But where did this all begin? What made Picasso in the first place?

Too long ignored, it is time to look at the early years of Picasso; the upbringing and the learning that led to his extraordinary achievements.

Three cities play a key role: Malaga, Barcelona and Paris. Young Picasso visits each and explores their influence on Picasso, focusing on specific artworks from these early years.

DON QUIXOTE Love and friendship triumph in Carlos Acosta’s vibrant production of this dazzling ballet.

Cervantes’s story of the bumbling knight Don Quixote has inspired countless artistic interpretations. Marius Petipa choreographed this sparkling ballet about the encounters of the man from La Mancha and his faithful squire Sancho Panza. At its heart are virtuoso roles for the lovers Basilio and Kitri. Carlos Acosta chose this joyful classic for his first production for The Royal Ballet.

His vibrant staging brings together the whole Company in such roles as exuberant villagers, passionate gypsies and even fantasy flowers. The story follows Don Quixote’s picaresque journey to do deeds in honour of his imaginary noble lady, Dulcinea. Sunny, charming, funny and touching – Don Quixote is a ballet as full of uplifting emotion as it is of astonishing ballet technique.

As a long-serving troubadour of the folk and acoustic music scene, master songwriter and storyteller Steve Knightley has spent much of his life on the road, collecting songs, stories, anecdotes and observations – with the odd disaster along the way. Steve once again takes to England’s highways and byways to present Roadworks – a show which builds on the success of his sell-out 2018 solo tour Songs and Stories.

THE FUREYS Legends of Irish music & song The Fureys have been entertaining audiences worldwide for 41 years. 17 Singer and bouzouki player Daoirí (pronounced ‘Derry’) Farrell is described by some of the biggest names in Irish folk music as one of most important singers to come out of Ireland in recent years. Those recent years have been a whirlwind for Daoirí. In January 2016 he launched his solo career at Celtic Connections festival in Glasgow. In January 2019 he returns to that festival, this time to lead an all-star line-up in one of the festival’s biggest venues.

His success can be put down to word-of-mouth excitement. Dónal Lunny has described him as, ‘one of the most important traditional singers to emerge out of Ireland in the last decade’ and following his live session on the BBC Radio 2 Folk Show with Mark Radcliffe everyone seemed to be talking about Daoirí. His third solo album A Lifetime Of Happiness is released in February 2019.

Experience the decadence and elegance of 1870s Paris in David McVicar’s spectacular production of Gounod’s best-loved opera.

There are many versions of the story of Faust, who trades his soul with the Devil for youth and power, but Gounod’s opera remains one of the most constantly enthralling. Virtuoso leading roles, a large chorus, sensational sets, ballet and an ecstatic finale make this the epitome of theatrical spectacle – the lavish scale of French grand opera is wonderfully in evidence in this production by David McVicar, set in 1870s Paris.

Above all, the music includes several of popular opera’s most recognizable numbers, performed by a cast of great international singers and the Royal Opera Chorus.

by Richard Howard in 1915, Sam Sweeney has created a live show and album of instrumental music inspired by the Great War. A veteran of the mighty Bellowhead, artistic director of the National Folk Youth Ensemble, founder member of the acclaimed instrumental trio Leveret, and a superb instrumentalist at the forefront of the revival in English traditional music. Joining Sam in the 5-piece band are: Rob Harbron (concertina), Patsy Reid (fiddle), Jack Rutter (Guitar) and Ben Nicholls (bass).

This musical play is based on the true story of the two half brothers Ishmael and Isaac, as related in the Old Testament. They shared a father, Abraham, but had different mothers.

This lead to considerable friction and eventually Ishmael was disinherited and exiled, becoming a destitute refugee in the desert. Over time, Ishmael’s descendants formed a different race and adopted the Muslim faith. The followers of Isaac are Jews and follow the Jewish faith.

Can the rise of religious intolerance be possibly traced back to the two Half Brothers, or has there been a reconciliation?

The choreography captures the emotions of the young couple as they fall in love, despite the barriers that finally bring about the story’s tragic end. “I envy the Japanese” Van Gogh wrote to his brother Theo. In the exhibition on which this film is based - VAN GOGH & JAPAN at the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam - one can see why.

Though Vincent van Gogh never visited Japan it is the country that had the most profound influence on him and his art. One cannot understand Van Gogh without understanding how Japanese art arrived in Paris in the middle of the 19th century and the profound impact it had on artists like Monet, Degas and, above all, Van Gogh.

Visiting the new galleries of Japanese art in Paris and then creating his own image of Japan – through in-depth research, print collecting and detailed discussions with other artists – Van Gogh’s encounter with Japanese artworks gave his work a new and exciting direction. The film travels not only to France and the Netherlands but also to Japan to further explore the remarkable heritage that so affected Van Gogh and made him the artist we know of today.

Mwldan Young People’s Theatre will be offering professional drama training for young performers aged 7-16. Through their regular classes, members of the MYPT will develop their skills in Acting and Stage Skills, with opportunities to put their skills into practice through studio presentations and theatrical performances.
