And, having installed a brand new digital projector in Mwldan 1 back in April, we’re also hoping that Mwldan 2 will now be converted from conventional 35mm cinema technology to digital projection in November 2011 – another major step forward in technical developments. Finally, we’re launching two new Mwldan co-productions this Autumn – our 39th and 40th production projects since we began producing back in 2005. Mappa Mundi’s Much Ado About Nothing launches at Mwldan on 29 & 30 September, followed by an 8 week Wales and UK tour. And our first Welsh language co-production Salsa! (with Theatr na n’Og) opens at Mwldan on 6-8 October before touring Wales for 4 weeks. We wish you an enjoyable Autumn, and look forward to welcoming you to Mwldan soon.

DON GIOVANNI (MOZART) Mariusz Kwiecien brings his youthful and sensual interpretation of Mozart’s timeless anti-hero to the Met for the first time, under the direction of Tony Award®-winning director Michael Grandage and with James Levine conducting. A troupe of refined Mozartians appears in this new production, including Marina Rebeka, Barbara Frittoli, Isabel Leonard, Matthew Polenzani, Ramón Vargas, and John Relyea. Gerald Finley steps into the title role later in the season, and Andrew Davis also conducts. In part three of the Ring, Wagner’s cosmic vision focuses on his hero’s early conquests, while Robert Lepage’s revolutionary stage machine transforms itself from bewitched forest to mountaintop love nest. Gary Lehman sings the title role and Deborah Voigt’s Brünnhilde is his prize. Bryn Terfel is the Wanderer. James Levine conducts.

Sensational in the 2004 Met premiere of Stephen Wadsworth’s much-heralded production, Renée Fleming reprises the title role. In the kitchen of an enormous West End restaurant, the orders are piling up: a post-war feast of soup, fish, cutlets, omelettes and fruit flans. Thrown together by their work, chefs, waitresses and porters from across Europe – English, Irish, German, Jewish – argue and flirt as they race to keep up. Peter, a high-spirited young cook, seems to thrive on the pressure. In between preparing dishes, he manages to strike up an affair with married waitress Monique, the whole time dreaming of a better life. But in the all-consuming clamour of the kitchen, nothing is far from the brink of collapse. Arnold Wesker’s extraordinary play premiered at the Royal Court in 1959 and has since been performed in over 30 countries. The Kitchen puts the workplace centre stage in a blackly funny and furious examination of life lived at breakneck speed, when work threatens to define who we are. And then he’s offered a poisoned chalice: a commission to write a play about Stalin to celebrate his sixtieth birthday. Inspired by historical fact, Collaborators embarks on a surreal journey into the fevered imagination of the writer as he loses himself in a macabre and disturbingly funny relationship with the omnipotent subject of his drama. John Hodge’s blistering new play depicts a lethal game of cat and mouse through which the appalling compromises and humiliations inflicted on any artist by those with power are held up to scrutiny. Well-loved by audiences at Mwldan over the past ten years, Asere are one of the hottest bands to have emerged from Cuba over the last decade. This performance is Asere’s first visit since their acclaimed collaboration with drummer Billy Cobham (which lasted from 2006 to 2008 and was co-produced by Theatr Mwldan). This time, Asere are here by themselves, but with a big difference, for this is an intimate, entirely acoustic performance, with the band located in the middle of an audience seated informally around them in a cabaret format. There will be no microphones, no amplification and no PA system. Just seven young and very talented Cuban musicians, an audience up close, fabulous music and the chance for the experience of a lifetime for both musicians and audience. ACCIDENTAL DEATH OF AN ANARCHIST Dario Fo’s celebrated comic masterpiece has become a hugely popular farce since it was first staged in 1970. Accidental Death of an Anarchist is based on real events involving an anarchist who, whilst being held in police custody on charges of bombing a bank, fell - or was thrown - from the fourth floor window of a Milan police station. Funny, farcical and occasionally verging on slapstick, the play gains momentum at a cracking pace as Fo’s cleverly snappy dialogue explodes like gunfire to reveal a masterly plot in an attempt to ridicule the police and expose a cover up. One of the world’s most frequently performed living playwrights, Dario Fo’s dramatic work employs comedic methods of the ancient Italian commedia dell’arte. Often controversial and occasionally subject to censorship, Fo was nevertheless awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1997. CAHALEN MORRISON & ELI WEST – NEW OLD TIME When people talk about the music of Cahalen Morrison and Eli West, terms such as gorgeous, amazing, gentle, lush, sophisticated, soulful, organic and earthy get bandied around. Cahalen, a New Mexico native, is a multi-instrumentalist who is equally at home playing fingerstyle guitar, lap slide, mandolin and clawhammer banjo. Sharing the same authenticity, and outlook, Eli, from Seattle, had also been a busy multi-instrumentalist, sitting in at times with the likes of Michelle Shocked and members of the Wailin’ Jennys and Crooked Still. When they released their stunning debut album The Holy Coming of The Storm - it met with instantaneous reaction on both sides of the Atlantic. Bob Harris invited them into the studio to record a session for his BBC Radio 2 show, saying their music was “quite extraordinary”. The quartet made their Purcell Room debut in October 2009 as part of Peter Maxwell Davies’ 75th Birthday celebrations where they performed his Naxos Quartet No.8 and have recently given a highly successful debut recital at London’s prestigious Wigmore Hall. This spectacular production follows the story of Gerda and her quest to find her friend Kay, who has been placed under the Snow Queens evil spell. Her fantastic adventure takes her on a journey across the frozen north. Where Gerda encounters a band of gypsy’s, an enchanted reindeer and the mysterious and reclusive Lapland woman, who tells Gerda to continue travelling north, where she will find Kay and the Snow Queen’s palace of ice.

SALOMÉ In this unique event, a screening of the 1923 silent film Salomé is accompanied by a live performance of a new music score specially written for the film by Charlie Barber and in a threatrical and dramatic twist, the music is performed by four percussionists, playing from two towers on either side of the screen. Salomé, starring the Russian-born actress Alla Nazimova, is a rarely seen artwork of film history adapted from the controversial Oscar Wilde play with an abundance of sumptuously fantastic visuals. It loosely follows the biblical story of King Herod and his desire for his young stepdaughter. It is Salomé’s desire for Jokanaan (John the Baptist) that causes her to dance before Herod. Like Wilde’s play, the film has always been surrounded by controversy, fuelled by an aura of loaded eroticism, and heightened by the melodramatic, highly stylised performances. It is a visual feast, more like a bizarre Art Nouveau-inspired erotic dream than a piece of cinema. The score is inspired by the sounds of traditional Arabian ensembles and features an ‘orchestra’ of percussion played over a dramatic backdrop of vocal settings of psalms sung in Latin and Hebrew. This is a high energy visual and aural feast that could prove to be a once in a lifetime experience. supported by Cliff Stapleton Spiro are a remarkable and stunning acoustic 4-piece ensemble who came together through Bristol’s folk scene and developed their very own unique and highly imaginative sound, which echoes, at various points, the work of Steve Reich, Michael Nyman and the Penguin Café Orchestra. The four instruments — violin/viola, acoustic guitar, mandolin and accordion — gyrate around each other in a harmonious fusion of styles, in which traditional English folk meets modern classicism and electronic dance music. Richly textured, utterly compelling, Spiro are a totally unexpected gem – sophisticated and adventutous, intricate and full of momentum. They create hurrying, scurrying soundscapes that sweep majestically with cinematic presence, a wonderful, euphoric, acoustic wall of sound. Their last album Lightbox, released on Peter Gabriel’s Real World label, drew enormous critical acclaim – “positively thrilling” (The Guardian), “staggeringly complex stuff…. breathtakingly moving” (The Word); the release of their new, second album on Real World coincides with their appearance at Mwldan and a full UK tour. Drawing the viewer into its hypnotic trance-like beauty Island Sound is a journey through sound, motion and the treasures of Skomer, the wildlife island haven off the Pembrokeshire coast.

2011 marks the 650th anniversary of the office of Justice of the Peace or magistrates as they are more commonly known. In Wales, the Act of Union in 1536 united the governance of justice in counties in Wales with England. Independent and unpaid, magistrates have helped shape the development of the judicial process around today. Ceredigion Archives contain many interesting reports on local justice. This exhibition will feature selected items drawn from local records of special interest and notoriety. ::

CARDIGAN ABERTEIFI 900 In this exhibition, the result of Cardigan’s 900th anniversary year, our town’s now famous giant knitted cardigan will be on display at Mwldan, surrounded by a selection of photographic images which came to light when townsfolk were asked to bring their old photographs of the town to scanning and archiving events. The result was a new collection of Cardigan’s photographic heritage. Lisa Hellier, the driving force behind the giant cardigan, has hand picked the photographic images displayed in this show to complement the cardigan’s images. ::

If you have pre-booked your tickets for a screening or event at Mwldan, our Box Office will endeavour to contact you (using the contact details given to us when you made your booking) should there be any changes to the programme which affect that event. If you have not pre booked your tickets, we would advise you to check (with our Box Office or our website) prior to departing from home – especially if you are making a long journey - that our programme remains as advertised. We would recommend that you prebook your tickets online or by phone whenever possible – we can then contact you in the event of any unforeseen circumstances. Disability Access :: Mynediad I’r Anabl Theatr Mwldan has good access for people with disabilities, wheelchair users etc. Wheelchair spaces are available for most performances - please let us know when booking. Theatr Mwldan is situated in the centre of Cardigan - turn left at the north end of the High Street/Pendre. There is ample parking behind the theatre for cars and coaches. Parking is free after 6pm. Mae Theatr Mwldan wedi ei lleoli yng nghanol Aberteifi trowch i’r chwith ar ben gogleddol y Stryd Fawr/Pendre. Mae ‘na ddigon o le i barcio tu ôl i’r theatr ar gyfer ceir a bysiau. Mae parcio’n rhad ac am ddim wedi 6yh.
