Cardigan’s Arts Centre and Cinema Canolfan Celfyddydau a Sinema Aberteifi Welcome to Mwldan’s new programme!

Croeso i raglen newydd y Mwldan!

In our last brochure, I said that we were awaiting the results of the Arts Council of Wales’ arts funding review. I’m delighted to report that we have received some fantastic news. Theatr Mwldan has been named as one of the Arts Council’s new ‘core network’ of eight arts centres across Wales - organisations that are ‘creative entrepreneurs, leaders in their field and strategically significant.’ It is great to know that Mwldan - Cardigan’s own arts and entertainment centre, and very much a community project - has over its relatively short life, achieved such significant national status. We should celebrate this achievement; it belongs to everyone who has supported us over the years. That is, of course, where you - our customers play such an important part in our success. Without you, we are nothing! So in these uncertain times of cuts and uncertainty of public funding, it is all the more important that you keep coming through our doors to enjoy and be entertained. We are committed to providing you with the very best programme and service we can; please make a positive decision to support us, an independent not-for-profit community social enterprise.

Valery Gergiev conducts Mussorgsky’s epic spectacle that captures the suffering and ambition of a nation. “There are two protagonists in Boris—the title character and the people he rules,” Wadsworth says. “Through Boris we see the private mind of a flawed leader, and through the chorus we see the volatility of a people skeptical about their leaders. Boris seems to me a good person who made a terrible mistake and ultimately cannot live with it. TIM LOWE Cello STEPHEN GUTMAN Piano Boccherini: Sonata in A Delius: Romance Beethoven: Sonata in D major, Op 102 No 2 Ligeti: Sonata Franck: Sonata in A Tim Lowe made his concerto debut aged eleven playing the Saint-Saëns concerto at York Minster and later became principal cello of the National Youth Orchestra. Graduating from the Guildhall School of Music and Drama with a first class Honours degree two years ago, Tim’s performances have inspired a number of composers to write new pieces, most recently James Week’s Partita for solo cello. His piano partner, Stephen Gutman, has broadcast as a soloist in many countries earning a reputation as one of Britain’s most creative performers. He has performed in major venues in London and New York’s Carnegie Hall. His vast knowledge of the chamber music repertoire has led to collaborations with many artists. Tim Lowe is a Countess of Munster Musical Trust artist.

Ringing with echoes of winter pagan festivities, Joglaresa’s Anglo-Irish collaboration of ancient and spellbinding Christmas song includes reworkings of well-known carols such as The Coventry Carol, Wexford carols and The Gower Wassail, plus many lesser-known songs such as Lullay mi Childe, Cauld Blaws the Wind and Cold, Haily, Winter Night. Currently in his second year at the Royal College of Music studying with Gary Ryan and Jakob Lindberg, he has given recitals all over Norway as well the UK, Austria and Italy including a performance of Rodrigo’s Concierto Aranjuez in Cardiff’s Millenium Centre and a solo recital in Wigmore Hall. His brother Emil Duncumb has been awarded two first prizes in the Norwegian National Youth Competition and won the Sparre Olsen Competition in 2008, where he also received the honorary prize. JAKE AND DINOS CHAPMAN MY GIANT COLOURING BOOK A Hayward Touring exhibition from Southbank Centre, London on behalf of Arts Council England The Chapman brothers first came to prominence as part of the YBA (young British artists) movement of the 1990s. They featured in the Royal Academy’s seminal 1997 exhibition Sensation, showing a sculptural version of Goya’s disasters of war. Returning to Goya’s work in 2003, they caused outrage for painting their own ghoulish imagery over an original set of etchings. My Giant Colouring Book returns to this method of working, this time appropriating join-the-dot drawings from a children’s picture book. The naïve innocence of the illustrations triggers a wild outpouring of fantastical imagery far removed from the original dot formations. This series of 21 etchings offers a fascinating introduction to the imaginations of two of Britain’s most inventive and subversive artists.
