A BIGGER, BOLDER ORLANDO SCIENCE CENTER:

New Dome, New Reasons to Visit This Summer

Standing inside the newly reimagined dome theater at Orlando Science Center, it’s clear how big a deal this is. The space has been stripped down and rebuilt from the ground up, part of a broader refresh that gives families even more reasons to visit this summer.

The first thing that strikes you isn’t just how big the new dome theater is, it’s how completely it surrounds you. Set to debut this summer, the new dome blends cuttingedge technology with a meaningful return to the Science Center’s roots, bringing back the planetarium experience that once defined it, now enhanced in ways that feel both modern and immersive.

A dramatically different dome

The transformation is extensive. The theater has been rebuilt with a brand-new screen, upgraded sound, and all-new seating designed for better comfort and sightlines. Orlando Science Center was once one of the last giant-screen theaters still using film; the shift to 8K laser projection opens the door to more dynamic and flexible programming. And then there’s the dome itself.

Unlike a traditional screen, it wraps around your entire field of vision, extending into your peripheral view from every seat. If flattened, the screen would stretch roughly eight stories tall.

The experience has also been thoughtfully redesigned for families. The seats are larger, have cupholders, are better spaced and arranged so everyone has a clear view.

by Dani Meyering

More to explore beyond the dome

The upgrades extend well beyond the theater. What was once a standard queue is being transformed into a true lobby, complete with concessions for the first time. Overhead LED panels will display animations and showtimes, while the floor-to-ceiling LED wall will showcase scenes tied to the current programming.

The space is also more flexible than ever. With the removal of the traditional projection booth, replaced by an eightprojector system, the Science Center has reclaimed valuable space for classrooms and camps, which serve thousands of kids each week in the summer.

Inside the theater, the expanded layout allows for guest speakers, special events, and even performances paired with immersive visuals.

It’s both a major upgrade and a meaningful return. The Orlando Science Center, formerly known as the John Young Museum and Planetarium, will, for the first time since moving into its current building in 1997, once again offer a true planetarium experience. New programming will include live shows recreating the night sky over Orlando, alongside films, laser shows, and digital experiences.

Ways to explore and discover

Inside Orlando Science Center, the experience is built around hands-on discovery. Younger kids can explore spaces designed just for them, while older children can dive into dinosaurs, engineering challenges, and physicsbased play. Kids are encouraged to interact, experiment, and follow their curiosity from one exhibit to the next.

Plan for a few hours, or even a full day, to allow time for breaks, snacks, and live demonstrations. It’s also an easy go-to during the hottest or rainiest days, offering a fully indoor experience that still feels active and engaging.

A summer must-do for families

That’s what makes the timing of the new dome especially exciting. Opening this summer and included with general admission, it adds a major new experience just as families are looking for fresh ways to spend long summer days.

To celebrate the summer, Orlando Science Center is enhancing its programming with special experiences and a few late-night operating hours to give everyone more time to savor the summer!

In many ways, the Dome by Dr. Phillips Charities reflects what Orlando Science Center does best: combining education with wonder and giving families a reason to come back again and again. This summer there are plenty of new reasons to make a visit part of your plans.

SUMMER BREAK IN FLORIDA

We're sharing our favorite things to do with the kids, including the best beaches, awesome attractions, what's NEW, and more!

SCAN FOR THE BEST SUMMER BREAK IDEAS!

Bonnet Springs Park in Lakeland

Our family got to explore Bonnet Springs Park recently after hearing people rave about it for some time, and for good reason! An oasis for children with more energy than you know what to do with (and their wheels), this is one park that is definitely worth the drive from Orlando. Here’s why your next day trip – or road trip rest stop – should be to this Lakeland gem.

KNOW BEFORE YOU GO

It’s a good idea to look at the map and plan out your route ahead of time since the park is huge — so big that there’s even a tram to take people around — and has multiple parking lots. The terrain is surprisingly hilly, but there are paved, gentle walkways everywhere you go. There’s a coffee shop, a gift shop, rooftop garden bar and a counter-service restaurant with burgers, kids meals and ice cream.

There’s also a shallow creek that kids love to explore and get their feet wet in, so consider bringing a swimsuit or a change of clothes. Also on the property is the Florida Children’s Museum (which has an entrance fee), which includes one of the coolest-looking jungle-gym playgrounds in the shape of a ginormous alligator, which you’ll drive right by on the way to the parking lot closest to the playground areas.

WAYS TO PLAY

The winding paths throughout Bonnet Spring Park lead to seemingly never-ending places to play. With so much open space, pack a picnic and plan to lounge around while the kids tire themselves out. In between the playgrounds, you can meander the Canopy Walk, check

out an indoor Nature Center where you can see inside a real beehive, get close to live butterflies in Zoey's Butterfly House greenhouse, or feed ducks at the Boat House

The park’s many playgrounds are truly stand-out and make use of the hilly geography in cool ways, building rock-climbing walls into the hills with slides, for example. There’s an impressive Treehouse with a twisty slide that blends right into the forest like camouflage, and a nice, flat Family Lawn where you can build with giant building blocks.

Mable the Mosaic Owl is especially fun to discover among the trees — a giant wooden climbing structure with peep-hole eyes, a slide and nooks and crannies for hide and seek. Kids also love getting dizzy spinning inside “Los Tomboles,” large, colorful Mexican-inspired tops. Make sure to check their event calendar for fun regular events hosted at the park, like movies on the lawn, STEM in the Park, silent disco, yoga and more.

Our Favorite Resort Staycations

Gas is expensive, and so are flights, but you can still plan an epic getaway with the family without going too far. Hooray for calling Florida home! We’re sharing some of our favorite adventures to maybe inspire your next staycation.

A vacation BUILT for Kids at LEGOLAND® Florida Resort

LEGOLAND Florida Resort has three pretty epic hotels that were literally built with kids in mind, two on property — LEGOLAND® Hotel and Pirate Island Hotel — and one in a more secluded spot across the street, LEGOLAND® Beach Retreat.

We love that the LEGOLAND Hotel offers seven unique themed rooms inspired by your child’s favorite sets, including LEGO® DUPLO®, LEGO® Friends, LEGO® NINJAGO®, Pirates and Kingdoms. Pirate Island Hotel next door is, of course, themed to all things LEGO Pirate.

The LEGO-themed beach bungalows of LEGOLAND Beach Retreat also offer a separate sleeping area for the kids with bunk beds, along with a front porch patio to lounge on while the kids play on the outside playground in the middle of each circle of bungalows.

All of the hotels have awesome pools, and you can even book a LEGO Workshop and enjoy other fun activities when you are done playing at theme parks.

THINGS TO DO NEARBY:

Obviously, visit the parks! You are steps away from LEGOLAND Florida, LEGOLAND Florida Water Park, SEA LIFE Florida and Peppa Pig Theme Park! A LEGOLAND Florida annual pass gets you entry into all four parks and starts at $199 each.

You’ll also want to make time to visit Bok Tower Gardens, which has an adorable Hammock Hollow Children’s Garden. It’s about a 25-minute drive and totally worth the pit stop.

Beachfront Getaway: JW Marriott Clearwater Beach

The beach is calling, and lucky you for having one of the world’s best beaches right in our backyard. If you are looking for a luxurious beach getaway, the JW Marriott Clearwater Beach is a great option. You’ll have access to amazing amenities, like exclusive beach access, the 11th-floor rooftop pool, JW Spa and elevated dining experiences like at Latitude 28.

The kids will love stopping by the Hideaway Hangout kids club for fun activities and programming. You can also book experiences like kayaking or paddleboarding or take advantage of the four-hour complimentary bicycle rental to explore Clearwater Beach.

THINGS TO DO NEARBY:

Visit Clearwater Marine Aquarium. It’s not far, and you can even make it a weeklong vacation and book a summer camp at CMA for the kids while you enjoy all of the amenities at the resort. CMA has added so many new animals to their marine family, including adorable sea harbor seals and dolphins!

Florida Dude Ranch Getaway at Westgate River Ranch & Rodeo

If you are really feeling the urge to get away from the hustle of city life, book your getaway at Westgate River Ranch & Rodeo, the largest dude ranch east of the Mississippi River. While they offer several different types of camping, glamping and cozy suites, our favorite experiences were in the Luxe TeePees and Luxe Conestoga Wagons. It’s such a unique experience for the kids, and they’ll remember it forever!

THINGS TO DO:

There’s not much else to do around here, and that’s the whole point of this getaway. But there are plenty of activities at Westgate River Ranch & Rodeo. In fact, there are more than a dozen to choose from, from a rodeo, mini golf and even a brand new water park! We loved horseback riding (because, of course!) and the airboat rides. Roasting marshmallows every night at the fire pit was another family highlight. Since you are so far out from the lights of the big cities, you’ll see so many stars, so don’t forget to look up!

Explore Natural Florida at Paddletail Resort in Crystal River

Another way to escape the hustle is to drive north up to Crystal River to experience natural Florida. The Paddletail Resort is right on the water by Kings Bay, not far from Three Sisters Springs. Manatee sightings are almost always guaranteed since it’s the manatee capital of the world!

Unforgettable experiences you can book include Swimming with Manatees, where you can passively observe and swim among the manatees, and scalloping in the summer months.

The resort just released its 2026 Scalloping package, which starts at $890 for two guests for a mid-week stay that includes two nights of accommodations at the Paddletail Waterfront Lodge and a guided scalloping tour with one of the top captains at Crystal River. This includes a snorkel, mask, and fins AND a chef-prepared dinner featuring your own fresh-caught scallops (served with seasonal side) and a Welcome Amenity Bag.

We always recommend booking a tour with a professional guide because they know the rules, and know where all of the action is at since they are on the water pretty much every day!

THINGS TO DO NEARBY:

You’ve got multiple parks to choose from, including Three Sisters Springs and the original Florida roadside attractions: Weeki Wachee Springs State Park and Homosassa Springs State Park. Arrive early at Weeki Wachee Springs State Park since you’re close by for guaranteed access to the Buccaneer Bay water park, mermaid shows and more. The parking lot does fill up fast during the season! You can also go kayaking in the Weeki Wachee River.

Over at Homosassa Springs State Park, you can explore the Underwater Observatory and see fish and manatees in their natural habitat, and walk the boardwalk to meet the captive animals that now call the park home because they can no longer survive on their own in the wild. Among the animals you’ll see are alligators, black bears and flamingos.

Immerse Yourself Near the Theme Parks of Central Florida

OUR PICKS BY WALT DISNEY WORLD

Gaylord Palms Resort in Kissimmee

We love Gaylord Palms because you actually don’t ever have to leave to feel like you’ve had a vacation. Not only is there an awesome 3-acre Cypress Springs Water Park with water slides and a lazy river, but the indoor atrium is also pretty incredible to explore. And from May 22 through Sept. 7, superheroes are taking over as the resort brings back its summer celebration, “Super Hero Summer featuring DC!” Overnight guests will get to experience DC Super Hero Splash Bash in the water park, featuring superhero games, DC trivia and a live DJ. You can also see the DC Super Hero Academy live show, take part in the Revenge of the Riddler Scavenger Hunt, dine with superheroes and watch the Battle for Justice Light Show.

Walt Disney World Swan & Dolphin Hotels

This is always our pick when EPCOT is on the list since you can easily walk or boat over to the back entrance near the World Showcase. It also has easy access to Hollywood Studios without driving! If you book the right room, you might even get a glimpse of the fireworks at EPCOT.

THINGS TO DO NEARBY:

There’s more than just the Disney theme parks! Board one of the resort buses for a free ride to Disney Springs to see Cirque du Soleil Drawn to Life. It’s a Cirque love letter to Disney animation and simply magical to see with the kids. This summer, buy a special $25 children’s ticket with the purchase of an adult ticket to experience the wonder as a family through Sept. 6, 2026. cirquedusoleil.com/drawn-to-life

We have a few other favorite non-theme park favorites on Disney property, such as meeting Cinderella’s ponies at Tri-Circle-D Ranch at Disney’s Fort Wilderness. Pony rides are also available for kids ages 3-9 for $10 on a walk-in basis only, so no need to book in advance. We also love playing a round of mini golf at Disney’s Winter Summerland Miniature Golf and even booking a round of FootGolf at Disney’s Oak Trail Golf Course

BY UNIVERSAL STUDIOS CoCo Key Water Resort

When it gets too hot for the theme parks, cool off at a resort with a water park like CoCo Key Resort! It features three connected water play areas, which are gated to help you keep track of your kiddos! There are some awesome water slides and even relaxation areas. We also love that the water park features a 54,000-square-foot canopy over most of the water attractions to minimize time in the sun.

THINGS TO DO NEARBY:

ICON Park and The Pointe Orlando are close by, with something for everyone in the family.

If you head to ICON Park, check out SEA LIFE Orlando, and take a ride on The Orlando Eye! From May 9-25, SEA LIFE Orlando is hosting a Meet a Mermaid experience where you can watch live underwater mermaid dive shows and even meet a mermaid.

At the Pointe Orlando, explore WonderWorks Orlando, which packs a great big upside-down punch. There’s so much fun to be had in this huge indoor venue, including floor upon floor of cool exhibits where learning is built into the attractions. There’s also a huge arcade with a glow-in-the-dark ropes course, a 4D XD motion theater, a giant bubble room and laser tag.

Then, to put a cherry on top of an extravagant day, grab lunch or dinner out at JoJo's ShakeBAR, known for decadent menu items that will blow your socks off.

An Easy Breezy Summer with CoCo Key

You've seen it from I-4 countless times. Towering above the traffic of the attractions is a cluster of colorful water slides piquing the curiosity of passersby. In the middle of the hustle and bustle of International Drive, CoCo Key resort offers a nostalgic, old-school, and easy water park day!

CoCo Key features three connected water play areas, each gated and fenced for safety. Since each section is fenced in, this layout helps parents keep track of kids and is a great place to relax compared to larger parks, where kids can quickly wander far. Lifeguards are on duty, and towels are included.

THINGS TO DO AT COCO KEY WITH KIDS

MINNOWS AREA - a shallow splash zone ideal for younger kids

MIDDLE POOL AREA - a smaller pool with seating and nearby tables

MAIN WATER PARK SECTION - includes larger slides and the signature bucket dump

ON-SITE ARCADE - a hit with kids, just be sure to set some ground rules!

THE WATER SLIDES AND ATTRACTIONS

CoCo Key offers 14 slides and rides, two pools and an interactive splash zone. From the Cyclone Slide that shoots down into a central pool to Parrot’s Perch for younger kids, there is a slide for all ages!

Here are some of the slides you and the kids can experience:

BOOMERANGO A double-tube slide with steep drops and a large splashdown at the end. Riders must be at least 48 inches tall.

SURFER’S SPLASH A tube slide that can be ridden solo or with a partner.

OVER THE FALLS A fast vertical drop slide open to riders 40 inches and taller, the tallest slide in the park.

CYCLONE SLIDE A yellow enclosed spiral slide that splashes down into the pool below. Riders must be at least 48 inches tall.

PARROT’S PERCH A multi-slide play structure with four smaller slides and water cannons that younger kids tend to enjoy.

Littles will love the Minnows area and middle pool, which are under a 54,000-square-foot canopy, offering the perfect chance to beat the heat and reduce sun exposure. The canopy also saves the day whenever afternoon showers loom overhead!

SEATING AND RELAXATION AREAS

CoCo Key has many patio-style tables and chairs throughout the Minnows and middle pool areas. Lounge chairs are mainly located in the larger outdoor water park section, and you can even rent a reasonably priced cabana for a dedicated space with comfortable seating and lounge chairs.

Sip, Sip, Hooray! It’s Tea Time!

The Garden View Lounge - Tea Experience at Walt Disney World’s Grand Floridian Resort & Spa

Walt Disney World’s new afternoon tea experience is everything your Disney tea party dreams are made of! With a whimsical nod to the Disney classic “Alice in Wonderland,” the Garden View Lounge Tea Experience at the Grand Floridian is a sweet way to create forever memories with your family and friends. And we're "spilling the tea!"

The Delectable Bites

Your service starts with a delicous OrangeCranberry scone, and then comes the three tiers of tea party magic! From the Mad Hatter’s legendary hat to a nod to the painting of the roses red scene, you’ll be charmed by every single item on the three-tiered platter. It’s all almost too beautiful to eat … but you will anyway because it’s too good not to!

If you are bringing the kids, there is a Children’s Tea experience with a menu designed just for them, including Queen of Hearts Cheese Toastie, a Fanciful Turkey Wrap, and a Sunflower Seed Butter and Jelly Bun. They aren’t left out when it comes to the adorable desserts! Their platter will be filled with a Cheshire Cat Raspberry Macaron, the Chocolate Brownie Branch and the vanilla White Rabbit Cupcake.

The Tea

While the food was absolutely something special, one of our favorite moments was when we were presented with a selection of Twining's loose-leaf teas in a box of cloches. We were able to smell each one and choose our tea based on our favorite scent. I selected Orangery of Lady Jane Grey, which is exclusive to Walt Disney World Resort. Twinings Tea also has selections kids will love.

Twinings Tea: Steeped in History

Disney has had a long relationship with Twinings Tea, which began with the addition of the Twinings Tea Caddy at EPCOT's UK Pavilion in 1982. During our Tea Experience, we had the chance to meet Stephen Twining, a 10th-generation member of the Twining Tea family. His family’s flagship store in London has been at the same location for 300+ years, and if you happen to make it over there, you can visit and even book a tea masterclass!

Since it’s not often that you get to meet a family so steeped in the history of tea, we had to ask about his family’s tea family history and top tea tip!

OPM:

Stephen, let’s go back to the beginning when Twinings Tea got its start. People can still visit the original store in London!

ST: At the back of what is now the store is where Thomas Twining started the business in 1706. He bought an existing London coffee house, which was a place where men met and did business. In the city of London, in the square mile we call the Financial District, there were over 2,000 coffee houses, so he's just outside that area and wants a point of difference, so he introduces fine quality tea. The tea rapidly took over, but the main customers for tea in London, because it was very expensive through taxation, were the wealthy aristocratic ladies who wanted tea to serve at home. He quickly realized that there was a future in tea. He bought two neighboring properties, which are now that beautiful little shop in London, and it became concentrated on tea, and we've been doing tea ever since.

OPM: It’s incredible that your family has been able to keep the business within the family for 10 generations!

ST: I’m a very lucky man who's never done a day's work in his life because I'm just doing what I love, and hopefully, in every generation, we find that. People are passionate about it, and it might be the history that inspires them, it might be the tea plant and everything you do with it; there are so many different aspects to this company and what we do. I knew at the age of eight that this was what I was going to do.

I'm very happy to tell you that the 11th generation has just joined us nearly two years ago now and is training to be a master tea taster. Being a marketing graduate, we thought it would be marketing that would inspire him. No, it was tea tasting - that’s what he fell in love with.

OPM: Let’s talk about the family connection to Walt Disney World.

ST: In 1982, my father was honored to open the Tea Caddy in EPCOT because we were Disney's tea of choice, which is just fantastic. And we've had that relationship ever since. I think we worked out very quickly that Disney is passionate about the experience they want their guests to have. We are passionate about the experience we want our customers to have with tea. So we have that absolutely in common. The other things we have in common are the attention to detail. They are masters of attention to detail, and an awful lot of attention to detail goes into brewing our teas, preparing our teas, getting that blend of tea just right. So there are so many things I can mention that are in common. We've developed this great relationship; they're always looking to the future, we're always looking to the future, and it's just the most natural fit to work with them.

OPM: What’s your advice on selecting the perfect cup of tea?

ST: When it comes to the tea, as I say, choose what you like, drink it how you like.

The Tea Experience is $79 per adult and $49 per child (ages 3–9). You can also upgrade your experience with champagne, tea-based drinks, a seasonal cheese platter (which we did) and Royal Osetra Caviar.

Rebecca Leininger Executive

RISE Community Solutions

As executive director of RISE Community Solutions, Rebecca Leininger is helping Central Florida families build stronger, more stable futures. A dedicated leader in the nonprofit space, she focuses on creating pathways to financial wellness and stability, work that is deeply personal as both a professional and a parent.

Through her leadership, RISE Community Solutions partners with families to move beyond crisis mode and into lasting stability, offering tools, education, and support that meets parents where they are.

OPM: What inspired your work in the nonprofit and family services space?

RL: I’ve always been drawn to work that centers people and helps create real, lasting change. Over time, I saw how interconnected challenges like housing, finances, and access to resources are for families. That understanding led me to this work, where we can support the whole family and not just one piece of the puzzle.

OPM: What does your role as executive director look like day to day?

RL: No two days are exactly the same, which I love. Some days are focused on strategy, partnerships, and making sure our programs are reaching the families who need them most. Other days, I’m connecting with our team or hearing directly from families about their experiences. Staying close to both the big picture and the real-life impact is important to me.

OPM: What are some of the biggest challenges families are facing right now?

RL: Many families are navigating rising costs while trying to stay financially stable. It’s not just one issue—it’s the combination of housing, childcare, transportation, and everyday expenses. That’s why it’s so important to take a comprehensive approach and provide support that helps families build resilience over time.

OPM: How does RISE Community Solutions help families move from crisis to stability?

RL: We focus on both immediate needs and long-term solutions. That can look like financial education, one-on-one coaching, and connecting families to resources that support stability. The goal is not just to solve today’s problem, but to help families feel confident navigating the future.

OPM: As a mom, how does your personal experience shape your work?

RL: Being a parent gives me a deeper understanding of the pressures families face. You’re constantly thinking about how to provide, how to

plan, and how to create opportunities for your children. That perspective keeps me grounded and reminds me why this work matters so much.

OPM: What advice would you give to other parents who may be feeling overwhelmed?

RL: You don’t have to figure everything out on your own. There are resources and people who want to help. Taking that first step, whether it’s asking a question, seeking guidance, or exploring support, can make a meaningful difference.

OPM: What’s next for RISE Community Solutions?

RL: We’re continuing to expand our reach and deepen our impact in Central Florida. Our focus is on building stronger partnerships and creating even more opportunities for families to access the tools they need to thrive.

Mark Freid

Executive Director at Winter Park Institute

As the new executive director of the Winter Park Institute, Mark Freid is helping shape meaningful conversations that strengthen the community across Central Florida. A Winter Park resident for nearly 30 years, Mark and his wife, Steph, chose to raise their three children in a city known for its commitment to learning, the arts, and civic engagement — values that continue to influence both his family life and professional work.

Under his leadership, the Institute focuses on intergenerational programming that brings families, students, seniors, and lifelong learners into shared dialogue.

OPM: What inspired you to pursue a career in marketing and eventually become executive director of the Winter Park Institute?

MF: I was raised by a psychologist and an artist, so curiosity, conversation, and seeing the world from multiple perspectives were part of everyday life. That foundation still guides me today and informs my vision for the Winter Park Institute: Creating welcoming, accessible programs that invite people of all ages to think deeply and engage with ideas that shape how we live together.

I became a writer and producer after studying International Relations at Tulane University. Studying abroad during my junior year at Tulane felt like a natural extension of how my parents raised me, to stay curious and open.

OPM: What is the most fascinating thing you’ve learned in the past year, either at home or at work?

MF: I keep coming back to compassion, community, and curiosity. I have a lot of hope for the future. When you really look around, there’s so much we have in common, regardless of background or perspective.

Early in my career, I realized how powerful it is to be surrounded by creative people. If we stay curious and keep having real conversations, we can grow together in meaningful ways.

OPM: What do you hope your kids will remember as they step into adulthood?

MF: While living in Louisiana, I took a trip home to Florida and was introduced to my wife, Steph. We started our marriage in Louisiana, but knew we wanted to raise our family back in Florida, close to family.

We’ve been married for 30 years and have been living in Florida for 28. We raised our three children, Jacob, Sophie and Joseph, in a community that values schools, libraries, and being good neighbors. I hope our kids remember seeing those values lived out every day. As young adults, they’re already putting those lessons into practice.

At home and at the Winter Park Institute, we try to create space for curiosity, dialogue, and new ideas, building a community that feels welcoming and thoughtful.

OPM: How do you unwind as a couple and as a family?

MF: We walk a lot, around the Rollins College campus and along the lakes. Movement is important to me, especially for mental health. I exercise every day, and that’s something we passed on to our kids.

We also love going to the Enzian Theater for movies and spending time together. Between raising three kids in their twenties and helping care for parents in their eighties, we’ve got a lot going on.

OPM: What have been your favorite parts of raising a family in Central Florida?

MF: Our kids went to the same elementary school and made lifelong friends there. My wife is a Rollins alum, and we sent our children to the Rollins Child Development Center, which was such a nurturing environment.

Those early years were shaped by genuine people, neighbors, teachers, and students who became part of our family’s story. Seeing other kids who were caring and curious reinforced those values beyond our own home.

OPM: What’s next for the Winter Park Institute?

MF: We had an exciting event featuring Condoleezza Rice on April 13, fitting our 2026 theme focused on human flourishing, how we live well together. And we’re working on more community-based programs.

After many years of nonprofit board leadership, I saw this role as an opportunity to help make the Institute even more open and accessible. I hope people come to trust that if the Winter Park Institute is hosting an event, even if they don’t know the speaker, it will be thoughtful, valuable, and worth their time.

Mahie Patil Kids to Know:

Growing up in Florida, where coastlines and waterways are part of everyday life, Mahie Patil has always understood how fragile those ecosystems can be. But her path into environmental research didn’t begin in a lab. It started in her backyard.

While helping trim a banana plant at home, Mahie noticed the spongy texture inside the bark and asked a simple question: could this absorb oil from spills? That moment of curiosity turned into a science project with real-world potential. Her research explores how banana bark can act as a biodegradable solution for oil spill cleanup, offering a more sustainable alternative to traditional methods.

OPM: What inspired your project?

MP: Oil spills have always felt personal to me, especially growing up in Florida, where coastal ecosystems are so vulnerable. The longterm damage from events like the Deepwater Horizon disaster really stuck with me. But the idea itself came from home. In Indian tradition, banana leaves are often used in cooking, so we have banana plants in our backyard. When we trimmed one, I noticed the spongy interior and wondered if it could absorb oil. That simple observation led me to explore banana bark as a biodegradable solution.

OPM: How does your invention work?

MP: In simple terms, banana bark acts as a natural sorbent that absorbs oil from spills, often more effectively than traditional materials. What makes it unique is that naturally occurring microorganisms within the bark produce enzymes called Lipases, which help break down about 80–90% of the absorbed oil within 72 hours. It works in both saltwater and freshwater, and because it both absorbs and helps degrade the oil, it reduces waste and potential health risks during cleanup.

OPM: What was the biggest challenge you faced?

MP: The biggest challenge was access to resources. I didn’t have advanced equipment, so I had to get creative. At one point, I crushed banana bark under a car tire to turn it into a usable fibrous material. I spent hours running small-scale experiments in cups and tubes, carefully measuring and repeating trials. It wasn’t easy, but it taught me how to problem-solve with what I had.

OPM: What did you learn from this experience?

MP: I learned that persistence matters more than perfect conditions. There were times when the project felt overwhelming, but staying consistent made the difference. Publishing my research in a peerreviewed journal was a milestone that once felt out of reach. It showed me that meaningful science comes from curiosity, resilience, and a real passion for solving problems.

OPM: What did it mean to be named a finalist?

MP: Being a finalist was incredibly motivating. I received thoughtful feedback that helped me refine both my experiments and how I communicate my work. I also learned so much from the other finalists, whose projects ranged from honeybee health to algal bloom solutions. It made me feel part of a larger community working to solve environmental challenges.

OPM: That’s so exciting! What are your goals for the future?

MP: I hope to explore microbiome engineering in environmental systems. I’m especially interested in how microorganisms can be

used to address large-scale issues like pollution and climate change. Tiny organisms play a huge role in environmental balance, and I want to better understand how we can use them responsibly to create sustainable solutions.

OPM: What advice would you give other kids interested in science?

MP: Start with curiosity, not perfection. Pay attention to small problems in everyday life, that’s often where the best ideas begin. You don’t need expensive equipment or a perfect lab to get started. Science is about persistence and learning as you go.

Built on Service, Driven by Integrity: The Story Behind Bizzy Air

In Central Florida, air conditioning isn’t just about comfort. It’s about taking care of your family. When the heat rises, your home should be the place everyone can relax, sleep comfortably, and feel at ease. That’s why homeowners are more thoughtful than ever about who they trust to take care of their systems. For

At the center of it all is Jonathan Quiceno, a veteran and entrepreneur who built the company with a simple goal in mind: to take care of people the right way. For Jonathan, that means treating every home like it belongs to someone’s family, not just another service call on the schedule. That mindset comes from his background. The discipline and accountability he developed through his military experience carry into how Bizzy Air operates every day. Showing up on time, being honest, and following through are not optional. They are part of the standard every

approach is simple and respectful. Take the time to understand what’s going on, explain it clearly, and help the homeowner make the best decision for their family. There’s no pressure and no confusing language, just straightforward guidance so families feel confident about what’s

That kind of experience matters, especially when something goes wrong. A broken AC system in Florida isn’t just inconvenient. It affects sleep, comfort, and daily life. Bizzy Air understands, which is why they focus on doing the job right the first time and helping prevent issues before they happen.

Over time, that approach has built strong relationships throughout Central Florida. Many families first call Bizzy Air for a single issue, then continue to rely on them year after year. They recommend them to neighbors, share their experiences, and come back because they know they’ll be taken care of.

The team plays a big role in that trust. Jonathan has been intentional about hiring technicians who not only have the skills but also the right mindset. Respect for the home, attention to detail, and genuine care for the customer are expected on every call. It’s not just about fixing equipment. It’s about making sure families feel comfortable and supported.

As the company has grown, so have its services. In addition to HVAC, Bizzy Air now offers plumbing, making it easier for families to rely on one trusted company for multiple needs around the home.

At its core, Bizzy Air is about more than systems and repairs. It’s about helping families feel comfortable, safe, and confident in their home. That’s what drives every call, every visit, and every decision.

SET A SMART, FAMILY-FRIENDLY THERMOSTAT ROUTINE

Keep your home around 78°F when everyone’s home, and bump it up a few degrees when you’re out. Use a programmable or smart thermostat so you don’t have to think about it. You’ll stay comfortable and avoid unnecessary energy costs.

KEEP AIRFLOW CLEAN AND STRONG

With kids, pets, and constant activity, air filters clog faster than most people expect.

Check your filter monthly and replace it every 1-2 months during summer. It’s one of the easiest ways to improve air quality and keep your system running efficiently.

KEEP HEAT OUT DURING THE DAY

Close blinds and curtains in rooms that get direct sun, especially in the afternoon. This simple habit helps your AC do less work and keeps your home noticeably cooler — something every family will feel right away.

FLY INTO HISTORY

This summer, America turns 250 and there is no better time for Central Florida families to turn history into an unforgettable adventure!

From Orlando International Airport (MCO), you can fly nonstop to more than 100 destinations across the U.S., making it easier than ever to plan a meaningful (and manageable) getaway with kids in tow.

Step into the birthplace of our nation in Philadelphia, where little ones can see the Liberty Bell and explore handson exhibits at the Museum of the American Revolution. In Boston, follow the famous Freedom Trail, a walkable path full of stories, snacks, and scenic stops perfect for curious kids.

Head to Washington, D.C., where the National Mall stretches between iconic monuments, with room for kids to roam, and free Smithsonian museums packed with interactive fun. Prefer coastal charm? Charleston delights with colorful streets, vast gardens, and a ferry ride to Fort Sumter.

In Baltimore, kids will love ships and harbor views near Fort McHenry. Atlanta brings powerful stories to life at the Martin Luther King, Jr. National Historical Park, while Denver mixes history with fresh mountain air for active families.

From reserved parking to pre-scheduled TSA screening times and dedicated family lanes, plus accessibility amenities like Annie’s Space Sensory Room and the Hidden Disabilities Sunflower Lanyard Program, MCO helps make traveling with kids easier, so you can focus on making memories.
