Welcome!

Your guide to wellness and healthy living in the UAE Published by

I

love healers. It’s kind of my hobby to experience different alternative healing techniques. I’m never one to shy away from the really ‘woo woo’ ones either. Quite the opposite. If someone tells me they channel light beings from the Pleiades star system, or that they telepathically communicate with animals, or perform healings with spirit surgeons from Atlantis, I’m like, ‘goodness how marvellous! Do introduce me then, how shall I greet your illustrious Pleiadian friend? …’ For the mainstream community, people who claim to talk to aliens and angels are generally viewed with some skepticism. Which is absolutely fine. We need healthy skepticism but we also need open minds and hearts. It’s uplifting to see how far things have come. The ‘less wacky’ forms of alternative healing like Traditional Chinese Medicine, hypnotherapy and acupuncture are now being offered in regular medical clinics as the mind-body connection is more understood. A few years ago, doctors trained in western medicine would have smugly dismissed the idea that stress and nutrition played a part in diseases such as diabetes or cancer. Now it seems ludicrous not to acknowledge this link. We’re coming round to the idea that stuffing the body with pills is not healing it. We are not meat suits. We are beings with bodies, emotions, beliefs and a spirit and it is this new* holistic approach to healing that is at the heart of the latest crop of energy healing modalities, one of which is ThetaHealing. Chances are you’ll be hearing a lot about this technique in the weeks to come as in November the UAE is getting its first visit from spiritual healing superstar Vianna Stibal, founder of ThetaHealing. See our story about ThetaHealing on page 14 and our interview with Vianna on page 18. These are exciting times.

16 November, Free EFT Tapping Awareness Talk and Demo

Join UK EFT Master trainer Peter Donn on a rare opportunity to learn the Emotional Freedom Techniques (EFT). Also known as ‘Tapping’ it has been transforming lives across the world for the past 20 years. It profoundly helps to release stress - often within minutes, clear past traumas, fears about the future, and blocks in the way of being the best we can be. It can also be used to deepen into states of love and gratitude and peace. EFT evolved out of an extraordinary experience when a clinical psychologist asked a woman with a strong and lifelong phobia of water to tap an acupuncture meridian under her eye. The phobia disappeared. Join Peter for this evening talk and learn the basics for free. Following the talk, starting 20 November is a full EFT training for Self-help or to become an accredited EFT practitioner. Location: Illuminations WellBeing Center, 409, Fortune Executive Towers, Cluster T, JLT

How

ThetaHealing Changes Lives

By changing your brainwave with a simple meditation, you have the power to heal yourself and others. It might sound far-fetched but the energy healing modality called ThetaHealing has hundreds of thousands of people around the world singing its praises. For the first time, the founder of this healing modality, Vianna Stibal, is teaching in Dubai in November 2015. Awakenings spoke to Dubai-based ThetaHealing practitioners Maya Badran and Tony Shoushani to find out more about this intriguing healing technique. Words by Tamara Pitelen. www.awakeningsme.com

I

n 1995, Vianna Stibal, an American mother of three young children, was diagnosed with a cancer that was destroying her right femur. Everything she tried from conventional medicine and alternative medicine had failed, until she employed a simple technique that she used in her work as an intuitive reader. Amazed at her own cure, Stibal began using this technique with clients and saw person after person miraculously healed. Since then, this technique has become a fully-fledged energy healing system called ThetaHealing, spawning many books, workshops, audio and videos not to mention the 300,000 ThetaHealing practitioners in 152 countries - and counting. The simple premise of ThetaHealing is that by learning how to move your brain into a meditative theta state (four to seven cycles per second) and connecting with the creative energy that moves through all things, you can make permanent changes on all levels: physically, emotionally, mentally and spiritually.

DUBAI AWAKENING

Here in the UAE, husband and wife team Maya Badran and Tony Shoushani are the founders of a company called Awakening through which they are spreading the message of ThetaHealing through classes, workshops and private sessions. The couple discovered the technique when Maya had a private session on the recommendation of a friend. Amazed at the results, she booked herself and Tony on a three-day Basic ThetaHealing course in 2010 and since then the couple’s lives have changed dramatically in every way – health, career, relationships and more. Today, they are passionate and full-time advocates for ThetaHealing and are driven by a mission to help as many people as possible take back the reins of their life and take control of their own healing and wellbeing.

SEPTEMBER - OCTOBER 2015

page 14-17 Theta story.indd 15

You attract what you are putting out. The universe works like a restaurant, you order a pizza, you get a pizza; you order a burger, you get a burger... When she first learnt about ThetaHealing, Maya was a TV producer. “I’d worked in the advertising industry for about 15 years until some dramatic events happened in our life, we crashed financially, I lost my job. At that moment everything in my life needed help, financially we were not doing well and our marriage was affected by the money troubles. “I don’t come from a background of spirituality. In my family, talking about angels and so on doesn’t exist but one day some friends mentioned it and because I was not in so good a place, it attracted my interest. I visited them when a lady was explaining ThetaHealing, she chose me for the demo and worked on me for about 30 minutes. I didn’t know what it was or what she was doing – I just felt that something touched my heart and my soul, these are the only words I can express. “Of course there is feeling better and happier but the thing that really caught my attention was that it touched a deep side in me.”

ESOTERIC STRUGGLE

Like many people when they first start learning ThetaHealing, Maya struggled at first. Tony however was a natural from day one.

15

“I didn’t get it. It was too much for me,” Maya says. “It was too metaphysical, there was too much talk about how I’m creating my reality and everything is energy… but for Tony, he was in his element. “For me, I knew it worked but I didn’t know to make it work. Tony got it. He got it from the first day of Basic. He said, ‘this is it, it works, I get it, it gels with my belief system’. It did not gel with mine, but it did gel with my soul.” At the end of every day of class though, Maya says she was a happier person. “There was something that was better in me and that’s why I kept going, then we did the Advanced workshop and then I repeated Basic and Advanced because I didn’t feel I mastered it or understood the technique. So every time the classes were given in Dubai, I would repeat them. I was determined to understand it so I did the Basic and Advanced courses seven times. Repeating is not failing, every time you repeat you understand new things.”

THETA FOR BEGINNERS

According to Tony, ThetaHealing gives you the tools to change your life but there is one crucial aspect. “This is very important. At the end of the day, you have to have a central belief in an energy that has created this universe, this is a prerequisite to Theta. If you don’t believe in an energy that has created this universe, Theta will not work. “So whether you call this energy the Universe, God, Creator, Love, Source, the Big Bang… whatever you feel comfortable calling the energy that created this universe. You are part of this universe and that energy is the energy of unconditional love and that energy has the ability to recreate instantly.” Tony says there are no victims in this world and that everything you have in your life – the good and the bad – you have created because at some level you want it, yes, even poverty and illness. If that’s in your life then at some level, deep in your subconscious, you want it.

16

awakenedmind cont. from pg15

“You are creating your own reality every moment based on your decisions - but your decisions are influenced by your subconscious beliefs. “You tell me, ‘Tony it’s not true, there are a lot of things in my life I don’t have that I want and a lot of things I have that I don’t want’. I tell you it doesn’t matter what you consciously think; your subconscious makes all of these decisions based on your belief system. “You attract what you are putting out. The universe works like a restaurant, you order a pizza, you get a pizza; you order a burger, you get a burger.” The problem is that we don’t usually know what we are ordering as this is being done by the subconscious mind. Your conscious mind plays just a small part in your final decision-making, Tony says. What’s the answer? The key is to search for and uproot the beliefs in your subconscious causing you to create, say, money, health or relationship problems and replace them with new beliefs. ThetaHealing is a technique to make these changes.

SUBCONSCIOUS BELIEFS

“Some people ask us, ‘is it that easy?’ And we say, ‘yes’. It’s just a frequency that’s active in someone’s subconscious that’s of a low vibration. We change it to a positive one, Maya says. “It’s just changing the frequency that you’re sending out. It’s like a song.” ThetaHealing practitioners work with your subconscious, which is 88 per cent of your mind. “That’s the power,” says Maya. “We want that part to feel abundant and worthy of love; we want that part to believe that life doesn’t need to be a struggle because if the belief, ‘life is a struggle’ is in your subconscious, and even if consciously you don’t want struggle, the subconscious is going to win.” If your subconscious believes that, for example, rich people are greedy, you may unwittingly sabotage a job offer that comes with good money.

The key is to search for and uproot the beliefs in your subconscious causing you to create, say, money, health or relationship problems and replace them with new beliefs. “Someone won’t be aware that they’re doing this, consciously they want they job but subconsciously, the 88 per cent is thinking, ‘no, no job for you, you’ll be too rich and you’ll get all greedy…’ but the moment we change that frequency in the subconscious mind about money and you teach your subconscious that they can be abundant without being greedy then they will allow the job opportunity,” says Maya.

BONES OF A THETA SESSION

“Let’s make it very simple,” says Maya. “Let’s says a client comes to me who cannot find a partner; she cannot find true love. The first thing I do is shift my brain to a Theta brainwave through a quick meditation. That’s why people meditate, to get into that stillness where you can receive guidance from the Universe. Guidance can be received in thought forms, pictures, whatever, it’s the language between you and the Universe. “The moment I connect, I will be guided on what her issues are on a subconscious level, for example, she might feel unworthy of love, or she might feel that people who love her, leave her because her father abandoned her as a child. I’ll start working with that belief, so we start a process called digging to find the root cause. So I’ll ask her, for example, what is the worst thing about not having a partner, she might answer, ‘I feel lonely’. So I’ll ask, ‘What’s the worst thing about that?’ She might say, ‘life has no meaning, I’m depressed…’ she’ll go deeper and deeper and we have to go as deep as needed to reach something called the bottom belief, which is the root.

www.awakeningsme.com

page 14-17 Theta story.indd 16

“The bottom belief might have nothing to do with wanting love, it could be about feeling invisible. So we ask, ‘when was the first time you felt invisible?’ She might remember that when she was a little girl her parents used to fight a lot, screaming abuse at each other right in front of her, as though she wasn’t there. “Then I would take it one step further with her and that’s the turning point in the session, I will ask her what positive lessons did she learn from this experience.

Tame the beast: Your subconscious mind controls 88 per cent of your decisions, beliefs, thoughts, emotions, reactions and behaviours.

Some people ask us, ‘is it that easy?’ And we say, ‘yes’. It’s just a frequency active in someone’s subconscious that’s of a low vibration. We change it to a positive one. “A lot of people’s first reaction is to say, ‘there is no positive Maya. I was a child, I felt abused, I felt alone and insecure…’ I say, ‘Of course you felt all this but if you did learn something positive what would it be?’ “For example, maybe she learnt not to fight with others that way, so if she has a conflict with people, she speaks to them with respect, not screaming abuse. There are many different learnings but if we don’t reach the positive learnings, her mind will not let go of the trauma and we will not be able to change that frequency or vibration of feeling invisible.” Once understanding is reached though, says Maya, this belief will completely shift. “She will not feel invisible anymore so she will allow men to see her because if she feels invisible that’s why she doesn’t have a partner because she’s sending out the frequency of ‘I’m invisible, I’m nobody’.”

HAPPINESS IS YOUR BIRTHRIGHT

“There is nothing you can’t change based on your free will and laws of the Universe,” Tony says. It is everyone’s birth right is to be happy, to be abundant, and to live life without sacrifice or struggle.” The reason that so many people live unhappy lives of lack, sickness, suffering and struggle, he says, is down to conditioning and the subconscious beliefs that we pick up during our childhood from parents, teachers, peer group, the media, the environment, and even from our ancestors whose genetic information we carry in our DNA.

SEPTEMBER - OCTOBER 2015

page 14-17 Theta story.indd 17

Most of our conditioning is set in the first eight years of life. This is when our subconscious mind acts as a simple sponge, soaking everything up with no discernment. So if a parent says to their child, ‘you must always work hard to earn money, nothing is handed to you on a plate…’ this belief is set in the subconscious like a computer program and will influence the child’s reality. Or if a father abandons the family when his daughter is just six, perhaps her learning is that men who love her always leave or she can’t trust men. Again, this belief plays out in her reality as she grows into a woman. In the first instance, says Tony, some people panic at the thought of being 100 per cent responsible – at a subconscious level – for everything in their life. They think, ‘Oh no, I brought this situation on myself, but why? And how do I stop doing it? I don’t know how to stop!’ But when you understand how this game works, you feel completely

empowered, Tony says, because there is absolutely nothing in your life you can’t change. ThetaHealing is one technique but there are thousands of other healing modalities, your only obligation is to explore them. “It’s a journey of self-discovery,” Tony says. “It’s a very fulfilling journey, you can use it for every aspect. For me, I just wanted to grow my business and fix my marriage. Both of those things are now doing great. Now I’m very passionate about Theta so I started doing this full time in 2014 and I feel this is my true calling. I feel that everything I’ve done in my entire life has prepared me for what I’m doing now.” “I taught my first ThetaHealing class last year and it was the most fulfilling experience of my life. Having the honour to play a small role in changing someone’s life is far more fulfilling than anything else. It gives you that tingly feeling. Very rewarding, beyond words.”

Q&A with ThetaHealing’s Vianna Stibal For many people around the world, ThetaHealing founder Vianna Stibal is a spiritual superstar. Now, for the first time, she is coming to teach her unique energy healing modality in Dubai in November 2015. Vianna spoke to Awakenings magazine as she prepared for her trip to the Emirates.

I

t’s an exciting time for fans of alternative healing in the UAE. This year, the founder of energy healing modality ThetaHealing, Vianna Stibal, is coming to teach in Dubai in November. For many, she is a spiritual superstar whose work, which seamlessly combines cuttingedge science with spirituality is profound and life transformational. To date, there are 152 countries with ThetaHealing practitioners and an estimated of 300,000 practitioners around the world. Awakenings spoke to Vianna before her UAE visit:

In which regions is ThetaHealing spreading the fastest?

VS: “It is interesting that the countries that are in a lot of turmoil are spreading very quickly. For the most part, people who have deep religious beliefs, strong beliefs and values in God are spreading the fastest. These people are believers; they already believe in the Creator, in God, and that’s the one key you have to have to do ThetaHealing and really understand that the Creator does the work and we are the witnesses; and these people already have their faith.”

What is the biggest misconception that people have about ThetaHealing?

VS: “A misconception that I’ve run into a lot lately is people think they can take the work to the big business sector but they don’t want to take the whole healing modality; they only want to take the belief work. They think that big business isn’t interested in angels and the other things that ThetaHealing teaches, but I believe that’s wrong. A lot of business people have a strong belief in the Creator and in the fact that they are part of the one energy of All That Is.”

What is the biggest misconception that people hold about ThetaHealing practitioners? For example, do SEPTEMBER - OCTOBER 2015

page 18-19 Vianna.indd 19

people believe you should have no issues yourself? How do you explain why this is not so?

VS: “People come to ThetaHealing for different reasons, most of them come to heal themselves or their family or the planet, and I think there is a great misconception that a healer has to be well. People don’t expect doctors to always be well, but they expect healers to be well, which is ridiculous because everybody has a human body. I think healers should accept their selves as being part of the world and being human and always be working on themselves to get themselves physically stronger. We are doing our best to grow spiritually and keep our bodies with us, growing and changing and getting better.

There seem to be hundreds of different healing modalities these days, what sets ThetaHealing apart from the others?

VS: “First of all ThetaHealing is not anti-other healing modalities, we believe there is a reason we learn everything and there a reason for everything that we do. The one major concept in ThetaHealing is that we are connected to the Creator and that we are allowed to witness the creative force doing the work. So we ourselves are witnesses in this program of ThetaHealing. I have seen ThetaHealing clear beliefs, I’ve seen ThetaHealing heal dogs, cats, plants… we pretty well encompass a lot in our healing but we also embrace other people’s ideas.”

Why has the world been gifted this technique? What is the purpose of getting it now – in this time in the world’s history?

VS: “Spiritually I believe that it has come back to the world from eons ago in order to help push the earth to a change, a change that would actually lift up the spiritually energy of the earth so that we can actually move forward in our spiritual progress rather than destroy

19

ourselves, so it is super important that we begin to make changes so that we move forward in peace and love.”

How do you see it evolving?

VS: “I see ThetaHealing evolving at a greater level than I ever saw before. People grab onto it because on some level our souls already know that we are connected to the Creator and we already on some level know how to do this and how to change things. “I think in a really important way we are making a difference coming from joy, love and true connection, knowing that we are sparks of God.”

How do you feel about the potential of ThetaHealing in the UAE and Middle East?

VS: “I think that working with people that already respect and love the Creator is going to be an ideal environment for ThetaHealing to grow. I am eager to see what happens but more importantly I think that this is where we can make a lot of difference in this world since so many countries come and work with these countries. “I would like to add that it is easier to work with people who have a natural faith in their DNA and their surroundings; so I am sure that our trip here will be life changing for many thousands of people.”

TheetaHealing founder Vianna Stibal is teaching in Dubai from 17-27 November 2015. She will be teaching the following courses: 17-20 November, Basic Instructor (Prerequisites: Basic, Advanced) 21-22 November, Advanced Instructor (Pre-requisites: Basic, Advanced, Basic Instructor) 25-26 November, Dig Deeper Practitioner (Pre-requisites: Basic, Advanced) 27 November, Dig Deeper Instructor, (Prerequisite: Basic Instructors, Advanced Instructors, Dig Deeper). H

omeopathy is a system of natural health care based on ideas developed in the 1790s by German doctor Samuel Hahnemann. The basic principle is that ‘like cures like’. So, in the same way that the cure for a snake-bite is snake venom, the theory of homeopathy is that a substance that causes certain symptoms can also help to remove those symptoms. A second central principle is based around a special process of dilution and shaking. Practitioners believe that the more a substance is diluted in this way, the greater its power to treat symptoms. Many homeopathic remedies consist of substances that have been so diluted that there is almost none of the original substance left, which is why some allopathic Western medical practitioners dismiss homeopathy as offering nothing more than a placebo effect at best.

“Being sick means the life force is imbalanced for reasons that we aim to find out. “One person’s unique reaction towards the root of the illness with all the individual symptoms and modalities are most important in order to work out the homeopathic prescription. “Homeopathy does not treat a disease but it treats a person. So two people with the same diagnosis are prescribed different homeopathic medicine according to their unique, individual constitution. “All different aspects of body, mind, soul and environment affect each other and are therefore part of the initial consultation, which can take around 60-120 minutes.

21

After 11 years as a practicing homeopathy practitioner, Krombach says that what continues to fascinate her about her work is that not only is the inner healing ability mobilised but also the patient starts living up to her or his whole potential. “It is lovely to see an aggressive child starting to express feelings verbally and communicating anger instead of hitting others and screaming; or hearing about a creative outburst from a burnt-out manager; or realising that decisionmaking does not need to involve sleepless nights of wracking the brain in doubt that either way would be the right decision. Simple things can be simple again.” cont. overleaf

HOLISITIC HEALING

For alternative and complementary healing practitioners though, the confidence in homeopathy is built on a completely different approach to healing to that of conventional Western medicine. Tina Krombach is a Germantrained Natural Medicine and Homeopathy Practitioner. She recently started consulting at the DNA Center for Integrative Medicine and Wellness on Abu Dhabi’s Saadiyat Island. According to Krombach, homeopathy forms a complete medical system by itself, working according to its own rules. “Starting with falling ill. There is only one disease all conditions boil down to, which is the diseased vital energy. Vital energy or life force is what keeps us together, the link between body, mind, soul and environment,” Krombach says.

THE ENEMY WITHIN: AUTO-IMMUNITY

An increasingly common and wide range of conditions that come under the umbrella term ‘auto-immune disorders’ describes when the body basically starts attacking itself. These conditions can take place at one organ only, for example, auto-immune Thyroiditis but in fact they are all systemic because of the involvement of the immune system and dysfunctional cellular communication, Krombach says. The most common auto-immune diseases are Diabetes type 1, Celiac Disease, Crohn’s Disease, Ulcerative Colitis, Hashimoto Thyroiditis, Graves Disease, Fibromyalgia, Myasthenia Gravis, Ankylosing Spondylitis, Multiple Sclerosis, Restless Leg Syndrome, Lyme Disease, Reactive Arthritis, Lupus Erythematosus etc. Here in the UAE, Krombach says she mostly sees patients with Crohn’s, Fibromyalgia, Thyroid Disease and Multiple Sclerosis. “Auto-immune conditions affect the whole system, that means the person not only suffers from physical symptoms, but can also struggle with depressive moods and by the affect the condition has on social interaction. “Homeopathy addresses all these different aspects. I cannot focus on function or dysfunction of one organ and not consider how the patient actually feels and how she/he is coping. “Homeopathic medicine supports the immune system and can re-establish a healthy cellular communication and reduce inflammation or pain. It is not enough to treat with anti-inflammatories or painkillers, which can have side effects with long-term use.”

ONE DISEASE, MANY SYMPTOMS

According to Krombach, there are no auto-immune conditions that do not generally respond to homeopathy.

WHAT DOES HOMEOPATHY TREAT? There is hardly any condition unsuitable for healing with homeopathy; the limitations may come from the expertise of the homeopath. As a holistic therapy, homoeopathy treats the whole person rather than a single symptom or a disease. Therefore it works on the physical, emotional, psychological and mental level at once and stimulates the inner healing ability. Of course it makes a difference if a health issue is addressed in an early or in an advanced stage. It can treat: • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • •

“By improving the immune system and strengthening the overall constitution, the auto-immune disease will naturally respond to the homeopathic treatment. To what extend it responds, whether there is a remission or just a stabilization of the current state, this depends on the case. In many cases an uplift in mood and improvement of sleep are huge steps towards wellbeing, from there the healing of other symptoms can follow.” One of Krombach’s patients was a German man in his mid-30s who suffered with chronic fatigue, concentration problems, wandering pain in the joints, night sweats, difficulties breathing, tinnitus and acute hearing loss in the past as post stress symptom. “He had to cope with a high level of stress in his managing position, which became more and more exhausting for him. He recalled a tick bite and local

Acute ailments e.g. acute infection, common cold Sports injury, acute pain etc. Healthcare during pregnancy, for babies and children Childhood Diseases, Attention Deficit, Hyperactivity, Autism Spectrum Vaccination injuries Allergies Autoimmune diseases Chronic fatigue, Lack of energy Complementary cancer treatment Diabetes, Metabolic Syndrome Depression, Anxiety and Panic Gastro-Intestinal Tract, Indigestion and Mal-assimilation of nutrients Post- surgery/post- traumatic care, post- infection/post- injury fatigue Recurring illness Respiratory conditions Rheumatic diseases Skin diseases

skin rash in the past, which was treated with antibiotics at the time. Despite the course of antibiotics, sometime later his symptoms indicated an infection of Borrelia burgdorferi bacteria; Lyme disease was the diagnosis. “Lyme disease is not very well known in many countries and although it is uncommon in the UAE, I had seen someone else here who got infected in the US. Unfortunately there is no allopathic treatment other than several months of different antibiotics. For this patient the symptoms remained and still bothered him years after the bite. My first prescription targeted the Lyme disease, rather than working on his constitution. After taking five doses of the homeopathic medicine Ledum pallustre 200C, he reduced his coffee intake drastically because his sleep was much more restorative and his fatigue was gone. After another two

weeks he reported that he had not had the wandering aches and pains for days and also was not sweating in the night anymore. I followed up with a constitutional prescription to stabilize his immune system and support his general health and healing. His body responded to the dose by sudden expectoration of mucus for a day, ever since then his breathing difficulties eased off. Now, when he is very busy, the tinnitus/sound in his ears comes back, but it is not as permanent as before and he says that he feels generally more ‘alive’.”

COMBATING CROHN’S

Krombach describes another interesting case involving a 25-year-old New Zealand man who presented with Crohn’s Disease. He suffered diarrhea, abdominal cramps, shooting pains in the legs, sleeplessness, cold sweats in the night, weight loss, low hemoglobin and low energy. He was taking daily high doses of Prednison and four doses daily of the immune suppressant Azathioprin. The use of Prednison (a synthetic glucocorticoid) for more than seven days suppresses the body´s production of glucocorticoids in the adrenal glands, leaving the patient dependent of the medication. The long list of possible side effects of Azathioprin includes infections, allergic reactions, nausea, stomach pain, hepatitis and pancreatitis.

SEPTEMBER - OCTOBER 2015

page 20-23 homeopathy.indd 23

Krombach’s homeopathic treatment aimed at reducing the allopathic medication and eventually weaning off under supervision of the prescribing physician; restoring energy levels, managing his weight and healing the inflammation to ease the symptoms. “My prescription was Mercurius 200C which also met his constitutional requirements. Two weeks after the three homeopathic doses he rang me and said that he felt really good. He felt so energetic that he started exercising after work, which was impossible before. In the early morning hours, he used to rush to the toilet, now he could sleep soundly and his stomach cramps were much better. He reduced the dose of his allopathic medicine but he reported that there were a few remaining side-effects so eventually he planned to get off the glucocorticoid and immunosuppressant completely. It took another homeopathic dose six

23

weeks after the first treatment until his life was not centering around his Crohn´s disease anymore.”

THYROID AND FERTILITY

Hashimoto Thyroiditis is on the rise in certain countries and can produce symptoms of both an underactive thyroid and overactive thyroid. A 36-year-old mother of one came to Krombach’s office with complaints of hot flushes, migraines, sore throat, hoarseness, fatigue, nausea, weight gain, hair loss, and cold hands and feet; however her major concern was that she could not become pregnant with her low level of thyroid hormones and female hormone imbalance resulting in not menstruating. “Almost one month after the taking the homeopathic medicine she menstruated. One year later, her first daughter is happily playing with her healthy newborn sister!”

Making a business out of yoga The wellness industry is booming but how do you turn a passion for something like yoga into a sustainable business? Yoga entrepreneur Kaya Peters looks at the biggest mistakes yoga teachers make when turning a passion into profit as well as offering the ‘must do’s.

any new or aspiring yoga teachers are likely standing where I was a decade ago. They ping-pong from one yoga studio to the next, drown in class playlists, sequences and finances, never get enough sleep and tread a humble path. They may feel modest about what they have to offer or uneasy about charging for services out of some selfsabotaging belief that making a lot of money is somehow out of alignment with a spiritual-based practice like yoga. Tell that to wellness multi-millionaires such as Bikram Choudhury, Louise Hay, Rhonda Byrnes, Deepak Chopra or Osho – a man who at one time owned 93 Rolls Royce cars; more than anyone else on Earth. I’m here to tell you that it’s possible to be both a successful entrepreneur as well as a yoga teacher extraordinaire. The stereotype of the modest yoga teacher is vastly outdated. The world

wants more and is willing to give more; if you’re dedicated you’ll be that giver. The world is changing at an unprecedented rate and the demand for health and wellness services is surging. The yoga and wellness industry is booming. There’s never been a better time to turn a passion for yoga and wellness into a sustainable business. It’s no longer about how eek out a meager living as a yoga teacher. In this new spiritual renaissance and market, the real question to ask is how to become a world-class profitable yoga brand that offers life transforming results that no price tag can match. First, let’s address some of the most common mistakes new yoga teachers make when building a business:

1

Mistake . Not Treating Yoga Like A Business We’re now in the industrial revolution of wellness. You need the organization,

25

methodologies, discipline, management and strategic skills to run it like a business to be able to fully utilize your talents and deliver that service or product.

2

Mistake . No Clear Direction If you can’t visualize the next peak of your achievements and don’t have a clear set of strategies to get there, you won’t. Many new teachers end up getting a whole bunch of teaching gigs to get the ball rolling. Once that ball starts, rather than steering it, they just let it drag them where it wants.

3

Mistake . We Stop Learning and Improving Its a fast-growing and shifting industry. To become a leader we need to keep on top of the changes as well as keep learning, keep pushing our boundaries and enhancing our yoga cont. overleaf

The yoga industry is booming across the globe, which means more compeition and more opportunities than ever for making a business out of yoga and wellness.

Tip : Excellent Customer Service As a teacher you are a beacon of wellness to your students and your empathetic attentiveness, care and encouragement is a major part of that service. Beyond physical support, it’s also the mental strengthening that will make your effectiveness and reputation stand out and spread to new potential clients.

practices as well as our teaching skills, our knowledge of healing, counseling and beyond as well as the offerings of our classes and services.

4

Mistake . Burn Out from Never Saying No New teachers tend to accept every teaching opportunity, even if it means loss of sleep, or going beyond one’s tolerance. This mental and physical toll can cause burn out and prevent you being selective, which leads you down a path that you may not be actually happy with. My top tips to yoga teachers today are the following: Tip : Have A Business Plan Create a business plan describing your vision, your target market, your brand is and your products/services. Then set growth objectives and strategies to meet them and base all your actions on it. Take and adjust your prescribed actions to get there, and once there, raise your objectives higher and set new strategies.

6

Tip : Stand On The Shoulders of Veterans Don’t try to reinvent the wheel. Many before you have already done a lot of the figuring out and hard work. Get advice from more experienced yoga business owners to prevent making avoidable mistakes and give you another perspective on your decisions.

1

2

Tip : Diversify Your Offerings Don’t put all your eggs in the yoga class basket. Don’t just teach one type of class either. A single type of service can only bring so much profit. Examples of other products to have in your portfolio could be yoga retreats, teacher trainings, private yoga, yoga therapy and writing your books/blog/newsletter or creating a YouTube channel to build a database of potential customers.

3

Tip : Niche and Branding Beyond the beginner stages, people want different styles and results from their yoga. Offer specific classes, services and events focused towards specific styles, health issues, philosophies and student types. At the same time, figure out how to make your brand unique.

www.awakeningsme.com

page 24-26 Yoga business.indd 26

4

Tip : Word Of Mouth Marketing The best way to promote your classes is through word of mouth. For an experience as intimate and engaged as yoga training, potential students prefer to trust teachers that their relatives and friends have personally experienced vs a description on the internet.

Tip : Be A Living Example Of Your Product The perceived value of your yoga brand, products and services is tied to what it has done for your life. If you have love, patience, mindfulness and vast health in your life, that is your proof to the world that your yoga is really worth it! Be mindful of how your own physical and virtuous development is perceived by your clients.

Are You a Negaholic?

(Shhhh, don’t worry, so was I!) Are you never happy with your achievements? Always criticizing yourself? Recovering Negaholic Claire Higgins explains how to tell if you’re addicted to negativity and how to break the cycle.

I

remember the moment as if it was yesterday. I’m 23 years old with the world at my feet. I’ve just received a job offer from one of the world’s largest humanitarian organisations, alongside the news that I’ve been placed second for my university’s best undergraduate prize. Against all odds, I beat over a thousand other students to get this spot. Me, who once scored a lowly C in her Arabic GCSE, had just received a first class degree in Arabic and a surprise nomination by her professors for her outstanding efforts. It should be a moment to celebrate, to let my hair down and run a happy rampage all across London town. Instead, I neatly fold the second letter back into its envelope and carry on with my day. It’s as if the good news never happened. Looking back, I think that subconsciously, being placed second wasn’t good enough in my books. Perhaps at a more profound level, it reminded me of that fateful C and it didn’t seem worthy of mentioning to anyone. More than a decade later, during my coach training, I learned I had once

been a ‘Negaholic’ and that this attitude had persisted throughout my twenties. It lingered and had a habit of flaring up when stress hit until I recognized what was going and took concrete steps to change it for good. According to Dr Cherie Carter-Scott, a Master Coach, bestselling author, and my own coach trainer and mentor, there are four kinds of Negaholics out there in

our world. Each of us can probably relate to at least one.

THE FOUR KINDS OF NEGAHOLICS

1. Attitudinal Negaholics

These are the visibly successful people who, unknown to all except those nearest and dearest, drive themselves relentlessly. They tend towards

cont. overleaf

perfectionism, not-good-enoughism, and hurtle furiously towards results with a slave driver mindset. Take myself, for example: That best undergraduate finalist prize led to ‘excellent’ after ‘excellent’ in nearly all my work appraisals yet still, I didn’t feel good enough. I couldn’t break out of this over-achieving cycle. Thankfully, stress and exhaustion later gave me no choice.

2. Behavioural Negaholics

These people have self-sabotage written all over their foreheads. Caught in the gap between their ideas and actions, they struggle to break free of self-destructive behavioural patterns, they procrastinate heavily, and feel like they never measure up. Like my friend, Sara: She’s been trying to lose weight for the past decade, trying out one gym membership and diet after another. None of them have worked, despite her best intentions, and she feels miserable inside.

3. Mental Negaholics

These are the ones who just can’t and won’t let something go! They approach the past, present, and future with criticism, judgments, invalidation, and even mental abuse. They struggle with comparison-itis and retroactive fault-finding. Like Zayd, an old colleague. No matter what he achieved, it was simply never good enough for him. He was unable to recognize the unique value and gifts that he brought to the team because he was so focused on the absence of his past work achievements.

4. Verbal Negaholics

These people feel helpless, hopeless, and unable to change. It doesn’t matter what topic they’re talking

www.awakeningsme.com

page 28-31 Negaholic.indd 30

about – them, you, others, the world – they just can’t find anything good to say. For them, disaster is always looming on the horizon. Like Benita, an old coaching client: Whenever we met, a crisis had always either just happened or was about to happen. Her negative thought process was permanently looping on repeat, making it nigh on impossible for her to consider positive alternatives until we managed to shift her original mindset in that direction. According to Dr Cherie CarterScott, if there’s one characteristic that unites all Negaholics, it’s that we suffer from the ‘beat-up syndrome’. In other words, our negative approach to life feels like an endless battle within ourselves. When there’s a constant war going on inside our minds, it isn’t long before our emotions start getting in the way. For many Negaholics who haven’t mastered their emotions, this is when we either shut down or blow up. So, how do you deal with emotions from a coaching perspective?

THE FIVE STEPS TO EMOTIONAL MASTERY

Step 1 – Sort Out Your Feelings

In coaching terms, we liken this to taking all the spaghetti out of your head and laying it on the table, so to speak. There, the strands are separated and you can see more clearly what is going on. This gives you more power in deciding which strands you want to keep and which ones to let go of. To do: Take out your journal and write by hand anything that comes to mind in that moment. Keep writing for 10 minutes, and don’t take your hand off the page. At the end, go back and check for any recurring themes that may need your attention. You may want to try doing this as a regular download for instant clarification of what you are feeling.

Step 2

– Acknowledge Your Feelings Admitting that your feelings exist often releases an invisible weight off your shoulders. When you can own your feelings without having to explain, justify, defend, or translate them into something more profound you de-clutter the space within you.

SEPTEMBER - OCTOBER 2015

awakenedheart

Acknowledge how you feel and completely accept yourself anyway. To do: Verbally express your feelings with a trusted friend for 10 minutes. Explain that their role is simply to be present and to not offer advice. At the end, offer to do the same for them. Resist the urge to analyze or “fix” each other when the exercise is over. You can also try this in private in a solitary space or speak into a voice recorder if it helps to hear yourself played back.

Step 3 – Experience, Express and

Release Your Feelings Most of us think that the game ends when we acknowledge our emotions. This isn’t true. Until we embody, express and release those pent-up emotions, they’re going to hang around, eating away at our insides when we’re not looking. We may feel a false sense of security only to be retriggered later on and lapse back into an old pattern of negativity. Regular movement practices can keep our insides flowing in the right direction and keep us feeling positive. To do: Dynamic meditations that involve shaking, movement, sitting, and lying down can be a great way to release emotions that feel stuck! Why not try an OSHO meditation class or, if meditation is not your thing, another form of dynamic exercise or movement? You could consider Yoga, Martial Arts, Dance, Running, or a Cross Fit class.

Step 4 – Communicate Whatever

is Necessary After we’ve fully experienced our feelings, it’s time to share whatever insights arise from this process. This is because it sometimes takes repetition to clarify and crystallize our learning process. In certain situations, it can be helpful to share with others what we have learned as being witnessed can help to transform our insights

SEPTEMBER - OCTOBER 2015

page 28-31 Negaholic.indd 31

into new behaviours, particularly if an accountability structure is in place. To do: Decide if it is necessary to communicate directly how you feel or once felt to another person. This person may or may not be related to the original source of your negativity. When direct communications is not an option, a Family Constellations session with a qualified professional can also help. Blogging can also be a great way to engage others in our learning process.

Step 5 – Complete the Cycle

When you’ve taken all four steps in succession, no doubt you’ll have a list of lessons learned. Before moving on, take note of those lessons and reflect on what you would do differently next time to avoid further negativity ruling your life. To do: Spend 30 undisturbed minutes writing down all the lessons you’ve learnt and how the negative patterns served you. Understand that you can have the benefits without the negativity in future. Identify any triggers for your negativity and how you can avoid being affected by them in the future. What do you really need to adopt and keep a positive mindset?

INVISIBLE GIRL

When I went through each of these steps for negative areas of my life that were holding me back, I discovered years of feeling unseen. Because I was academically gifted, teachers had a habit of leaving me to my own devices. While this allowed me the freedom to explore and discover new strengths, it also left me feeling unsure of whether I was on the right track. I was

31

often navigating new territory and failed to develop a solid inner compass to signal my way back home. Without this inner compass, I felt unable to track how far I had come. Every venture felt like starting from scratch and I was unable to accumulate the fruits of all my labour. When news of my prize reached me, I had no idea how to react. While training to be a coach, I realised that unless I sorted out this blind spot, I’d never be able to help my clients recognise and celebrate their successes and achievements, no matter how small or big. That’s a pretty big problem for a soon-to-be coach! And so I got to work. In my private journal, I started listing every single thing I had ever achieved and then immediately swept under the rug. From jobs and courses to inter-personal moments that made me proud, they all made their way onto the list. Later, I fully expressed each and every one of these small victories. I learned that the positive energy I had been seeking for so long had been under lock-down. When I finally paused to acknowledge myself, life got a whole lot brighter on all fronts.

Teach Yourself to

Astral Travel Do we leave our bodies while we dream and explore other worlds? If so, can we learn to do it intentionally? Alexandra Salkova McKenzie reports.

H

ave you ever felt there is more to life than we can see? That you are more than just the body?

The ancient Egyptians believed that a person died when their Ka, or vital essence which was part of their soul, left the body permanently but they also believed that this Ka could travel out of the body and return. They’re not the only ones. In the ancient writings of China, Tibet, India and Greece, there are records that our physical body has a counter part – a subtle body, which can leave our realm and communicate with spirits.

OUT OF BODY

Astral travel, also called astral projection or out of body experience, is the separation of our consciousness from our physical self, done either unaware (dreaming) or deliberate. Throughout history, people have reported spontaneously or consciously leaving their body and travelling through time and space. Many claim to use this phenomenon to access inspiration, wisdom or higher states of consciousness. Author and metaphysical lecturer Richard Webster said: “When you are out of the physical body, you are free to go anywhere and do almost anything you wish.”

www.awakeningsme.com

page 32-33 Astral travel.indd 32

I became familiar with astral projection through practicing meditation and self-hypnosis over the years. Many of my hypnotherapy clients report similar experiences. Every night when we go to sleep, we leave our physical body and go to the astral plane or to the next levels of existence. There are many worlds and dimensions existing beyond our physicality. During sleep we are unaware of the separation between our physical body and our consciousness. Whereas, intentional astral travel allows us to be fully conscious and able to explore higher planes of unimaginable and wondrous things.

HOW TO ASTRAL TRAVEL

The best time to practice is just before you go to sleep, or upon awakening. Deep reaxation is the key.

1) Relaxation of body and mind.

Start by progressively relaxing your body. Watch for the feeling of heaviness, tingling or internal movement (spinning). Focus on the sensation. Calm your emotional state and accept that feeling. Relax your mind. Observe yourself breathing. Watch your thoughts as if clouds in the sky. Gradually, there will be fewer of them. Connect to the state of stillness.

2) Intention

Set your intention, something you emotionally believe in and is aligned with your ethics. For example: ‘I am consciously aware of my astral travel experience’. Repeat this like a mantra.

3) Separation from the physical body.

Your thoughts, consciousness, or awareness is your vehicle to different dimensions. All dimensions are thought responsive because consciousness creates their reality. Begin by visualizing your body lying in bed and your astral-self looking down at it. As if you step out of your physical body and look back at yourself. Think of somewhere familiar. Visualize yourself moving to that location or object.

There are many techniques. The point is to keep your mind away from the body. If you think of your body, you will be sucked in. You may feel yourself floating, or some kind of movement. Through practice, you will learn to control it.

4) Exploration

Decide what you wish to experience and you will instantly move there. There are no limits. All energy in this universe is directed by thoughts. Thought is a powerful vibration. Different thoughts correspond to different dimensions. Aim to investigate the astral world and beyond. If you feel you may panic, create a form of protection. Prior to your experience, visualize a ball of white light or a white pyramid enclosing your body. Visualize a sword and armor to feel invincible. Find a way that works best for you. Astral travel is a completely safe activity, however, if you are unsure, consider learning with a therapist.

5) Returning

When you feel ready, visualize yourself back in your room. Set the intention or simply think ‘back to the body’. You will instantly pop back into your physical body. It may be gentle, or you may feel a jolt, due to frequency differences. There is no evidence of people losing themselves in other worlds. It is like a meditation, hypnosis or other

33

healing methods. Your consciousness naturally comes back, or in the worst scenario, you will fall asleep.

BENEFITS OF ASTRAL TRAVEL

Nearly everyone who has experienced this phenomenon wants to do it again. Through astral travel we begin to see we exist beyond the physical world. We experience that our thoughts create everything around us, and we become masters in manifestations. We consciously begin to live our spiritual experiences, understanding higher forces of universe and applying the knowledge into our lives. We see our very existence in a different way. We can transcend space-time, visit historical events or see our own past lives. We can see premonitions of future events. We empower ourselves with direct knowledge of the spiritual, instead of being satisfied with a belief or scientific theory. Importantly, we can look into our thoughts, emotions, belief systems and deeply understand what is behind them, to gain precious knowledge of ourselves.

The rise of the vegans

From hippie to hip...

Lock away your lettuce! The vegans are coming! Not so long ago, veganism sat at the extreme hippie dippie edge of the alternative scene but now it’s entering mainstream and is a global obsession with some heavy-hitting celebrity fans. Words by Tamara Pitelen.

orget politics and religion, the one subject that unites and divides the world into all kinds of ’no, I’m right!’ camps is diet. Should we be carnivores, omnivores, vegetarians, pescetarians, fruitarians, macrobiotic, plant-based, paleo, fasters, FODMAPs... or of course vegan and raw vegan, which essentially means a diet free of any food produced using animals. For some vegans, it’s mainly a diet choice for others it’s a complete lifestyle and a philosophy that directs every part of their life. Vegans from the latter camp won’t use anything that’s been tested on animals or has exploited animals in any way – from shampoo to shoes. Although every vegan has different motivations, a general theme is treading lightly on the planet. It’s believed that a plant-based diet is more sustainable than farming animals. Large scale meat production through factory farms is seen as not only cruel but also extremely damaging to the planet, thought to contribute as much as 22 per cent of annual green house gases and be a major contributor to growing global water shortages.

RAW BITES

One passionate Dubai-based raw vegan is Carolina Ziemann who in 2014 launched Raw Bites, an online business selling vegan equipment at www.raw-bites.ae. What is vegan equipment? Kitchen tools like vegetable spiralisers, nut milk bags, dehydrators, juicers, blenders and more. Ziemann isn’t just vegan, she is a raw vegan who came to veganism through an interest in raw food. “By switching to a 100 per cent plantbased and 80 per cent raw diet two years ago I experienced that there is a massive connection between my health and energy levels and what I eat,” says Ziemann. “Fruit, vegetables, whole grains, seeds, nuts and beans are my choice of food.

35

The truth is that I am always surprised about the ‘oldtimer’ vegans who do not yet know how to make homemade nut milk or a homemade nut cheese. “I had a 9-to-6 office job. It wasn’t any more exhausting that most jobs yet I always felt tired and without energy. I suspected that it had to do with nutrition and I had heard that in raw foods the enzymes are active and aiding digestion instead of being destroyed in the cooking process when heated above 48 degrees celsius (115 degrees Fahrenheit). “The tiredness that comes 10 minutes after a cooked meal doesn’t happen with raw meals because the body does not need to invest that much energy into digestion. I tried it and I felt the difference after the first meal. With a few exceptions, most Raw Foodists are on a purely plant-based diet although some Raw Foodists eat raw fish or raw meat such as sashimi or carpaccio.” As to why she wanted to be mostly raw vegan as opposed to just vegan, Ziemann says she found the uncooked food was the tastiest. “Raw fruits and veggies are filled with the purest water. Raw fruit is the most vitamin-rich off all foods and raw vegetables are the most mineral-rich of all foods. The truth is that I am always surprised about the ‘oldtimer’ vegans who do not yet know how to make homemade nut milk or a homemade nut cheese. These things are quickly prepared and they taste a million times better than the ready-made stuff from the markets. Buy some vegan cook books (check that the ingredient lists in the recipes are short as well as the prep time before you buy), organize and stock up your pantry and invest a bit of time in practicing these new recipes. FAMOUS VEGANS It’s official. Veganism is, like, so totally hot right now. Ellen DeGeneres and Portia de Rossi had a vegan wedding and Oprah Winfrey did a vegan detox. Here are some more of the world’s most rich and famous vegans…

James Cameron, Oscar-winning Director of Titantic, Avatar and Terminator

James and his wife Suzy Amis Cameron have opened the first vegan private school in California.

Stella McCartney, Fashion designer

lifestyle can improve your wellbeing, it should never feel like food prison.” Although Ziemann believes she is healthier on a plant-based diet, she does not want to espouse the health benefits because this is not her area of expertise. “I am not a nutritionist or expert. I was healthy before I went vegan and I am still healthy. I can say that for me the issue of worrying about weight has completely been lifted. I eat as much vegan food as I want and my weight remains in a good frame. One of the positive things of rawvegan food is that the craving for more and more doesn’t kick in.”

ANIMAL WELLBEING

Like many vegans, Ziemann is motivated by animal welfare. “How come animal products are cheaper than organic vegetables? How can a vast majority of people in developed countries afford to eat animal products three times a day? I do not want to go into the practices of factory farming here but for anyone who’s interested I’d recommend an amazing film narrated by Academy Award nominee Joaquin Phoenix. Called Earthlings, it’s a very persuasive documentary and you can watch it legally for free at the Earthlings official website, www.earthlings.com.” Ziemann says the main criticisms she’s

They are in most cases just not aware of it because they are either not interested to look into the subject or they are in denial because if they had a check-up they probably would see the need to leave their food comfort zone and make changes. As a vegan I started to be very conscious about my nutrition and my blood test showed great results without any deficiencies.”

TOP TIPS FOR GOING VEGAN

Raw vegan Carolina Ziemann, founder of www.raw-bites.ae, gives this advice to anyone wanting to experiment with a vegan diet. 1. Find support: There are many vegan and raw vegan groups in the UAE, check Meetup.com, Instagram and Facebook and join some. 2. Research and read: Some really great bloggers are out there, like Emily from www.thisrawsomeveganlife.com and Susan from www.rawmazing.com who shares lots of free recipes. Also stay open to opposing views, see pg 32. 3. Eat out: Visit the UAE’s vegan or part-vegan eateries, including Bestro in Galeries Lafayette, Dubai Mall [www.facebook.com/BeStroUAE], Tidjoori Bio Organic & Vegan Café in Dubai Marina [www.tidjoorirestaurant.com], One Café at Life’n One wellness centre [www.lifenone.com], and Comptoir 102 [www.comptoir102.com] 4. No pressure: You don’t have to go 100 per cent from day one – or ever! Start with one vegan meal a day – or even a week. 5. Don’t be a label: Some vegans eat honey, others don’t. Some raw vegans implement a certain percentage of cooked food in their daily diet... every sub- culture has its extremists but in reality there are no hard and fast rules – only you can decide what is right for you.

How to become vegan

Moayyed Feroze is a Dubai-based Holistic Health Coach who here shares the learnings from his experience of going vegan – the pitfalls and the epiphanies .

I

thought about stopping meat for around two years before I did it. You will face two challenges; internal and external. The internal challenges will be your mind and body. The external challenges will be from society, friends and family. Do not engage the external challenge for the first few months until you get a hang of your new life and have the informed confidence to defend your position. It will wear you out otherwise. Just tell everyone that it’s something you are trying out. By deciding to go vegan, you are taking control of your health. This is not a fad or a time-bound event. You are seeking a more fulfilling living experience and this is one of the steps towards that. First, listen to your body and wean yourself off animal products. Our bodies are adaptive and we get used to certain diets. The critical element is to consciously monitor your nutrient intake for the first three to four months. Be aware of signs like fatigue, changes in skin, urine color, irritability, frequent colds or anything that seems abnormal. This will help you address any deficiencies before they build up.

INTERNAL CHALLENGE

Start by going vegetarian and not all out vegan. I would suggest that you

THE ORGANAIC STYLISTA U E ? Did you know its own The UAE has re vegan haird sser.

don’t go off eggs and dairy for the first month at least. Your body and mind need a gradual detachment from animal products. Finding vegetarian options is easy. You need to look for vegetarian food rather than ‘food without meat.’ It’s a subtle yet critical shift in mindset. Explore the plethora of salads, brown breads, quinoa, pulses, hummus, and other super foods. Olive oil should become a staple as it will give you the fats you need and keep you full. You will be hungrier so stock up on fruit, seeds, nuts, salads, protein bars. Try new types of fruit, view it is an investment in your health. Eat at least five meals a day. Keep snacking on fresh unprocessed foods and don’t count the calories. Try to eat at least three different types of fruit a day. If you are confronted with meat and have to go hungry till you find a vegetarian meal… Eat the meat. You

need to prioritise your nutrition else you’ll fall off the wagon and not be able get back.

Protein powder

Whether you have a workout regimen or not, include a protein shake before bedtime. I use hemp or rice or a combination of vegan proteins. My standard recipe is: • One scoop vegan protein powder (Lean 95 by the Wellness Brothers is available in Holland and Barrett) • One tsp flaxseed • One tsp wheatgrass powder • One tsp chia seeds • One tsp maca root • Banana • Rice milk (or coconut, almond milk, etc) Don’t get obsessed with the protein count. There is protein in fruit, vegetables, nuts, wheat and rice. Just keep eating fresh and raw and take a multi-vitamin every morning.

The argument against veganism

Not everyone sees being vegan or vegetarian as the way forward. Author of The Vegetarian Myth Lierre Keith calls herself a “recovering twenty-year vegan”. She believes her commitment to a vegan diet for two decades caused her degenerative spine condition and that she was mislead to think she was helping the planet through veganism. Keith spoke to Janaia Donaldson of Peak Moment Television.

T

he vegetarian/vegan way of being doesn’t nurture human beings and is destroying the planet, so says Lierre Keith. Sadly ironic, she says, because if there is any group of people who are empassioned enough to lead a revolution, it is the vegan community. Unfortunately, says Keith, the real problem has been obscured and all the well-intentioned efforts of vegans and vegetarians are not changing the root of the problem. Which is that six corporations control the world’s food supply and for them it pays to keep producing mountains of cheap corn. Keith says she became vegan at age 16. “At that age you are very idealistic. It all comes together when you learn about veganism. You can stop oppressing animals, you can stop hurting the earth and you can feed hungry people - a complete picture. At age 16, I had no counter-information and thought it made sense.” The problem, Keith says, is that none of it is true but because being a vegan isn’t just what you eat; it becomes who you are, it’s hard to examine new information – because it’s a threat. While she passionately opposes factory farming of animals

Taking a closer look: It may not be comfortable to hear but the assumption that going meat-free is good for people and animals is not so straight-forward in our complex world.

Anyone with a beating heart should know that [factory farming] is wrong on every level: morally, ethically, spiritually. and says that this practice must stop, she maintains that humans require nutrient-dense animal foods for good health, in particular the saturated animal fats with vitamins and minerals that you cannot get from plants – vitamin A, vitamin D, vitamin K2, and vitamin E. A grain-based diet is the basis for degenerative diseases we now see as ‘normal’, for example, diabetes, cancer, obesity, heart disease, etc - diseases of civilization. “There’s a human template that needs certain nutritional elements and they are not provided by a vegetarian diet. You can go back four million years to the very beginning of the human race and there is no question that we were hunters. It’s what we ate for four million years and it’s the reason we have big brains. “The other thing you find in the archeological records is that humans are long, tall, strong, they keep all their teeth and their bones are disease-free until you hit the agriculture era then suddenly everybody shrinks six inches, they lose their teeth and are riddled with disease. “Hunter-gatherers did not get cancer, diabetes, heart disease, autoimmune disease or any of chronic degenerative diseases that we think of as normal. They are not normal.”

animal farm cruelty

One of arguments often put forward for vegetarianism is the catastrophic environmental damage caused by the farming of animals for food – we mentioned this ourselves at the start

SEPTEMBER - OCTOBER 2015

page 34-39 Veganism rise.indd 39

of this article and it’s true but it’s not the whole picture, says Keith. The environmental devastation is from the factory farm model, which absolutely must stop, Keith says. “Anyone with a beating heart should know that [factory farming] is wrong on every level: morally, ethically, spiritually. I think everyone can agree that factory farming has just got to go. Factory farming didn’t exist till 1950 and the only reason it could was because corn got so cheap. “From that point forward, it made economic sense to take animals off their habitat, off their farms, and essentially put them in cities. So now they live in concrete and they’re fed corn, which is not their native diet, it kills them. If you’re eating grain-fed or corn-fed beef, you’re eating a sick animal. It kills them literally, it burns holes in their stomach it destroys their livers, which is why we give them antibiotics.”

39

at the cliff. The people who care the most are environmentalists. Even of them, I would say that the most impassioned people are the vegans. The values are not the problems – justice, sustainability, compassion. We have the right values and we’ve got the passion to institute them. But with the vegetarian/vegan diet we have been pointing in the wrong direction for 30 years. I want people to understand the real damage that is being done to this planet and what it is going to take to repair it. We are going to have to give up agriculture if this planet is to have any hope.”

commiting biocide

So what is the answer? Reverting to perennial polycultures says Keith, who calls modern agricultural practices “biocide” because annual grain production is destroying topsoil and creating deserts on a planetary scale. Lierre advocates the end of practices that are destroying our soil, air and water supplies. We need to shift our agriculture from huge crops of cheap grain and go back to grasslands, forests and prairies that support billions of life-forms not just mono-crops. “We have hit the end. We have no more continents. We have been out of soil since 1950. The human race is

Are we eating and sitting our way to osteoarthritis? Research now suggests that the inflammatory effects of the western diet and our sedentary lifestyles are contributors to this debilitating condition. By Dawn Rowland.

Tackling the causes of

osteoarthritis T

here are more than 100 different types of arthritis, the most common of which is osteoarthritis, a degenerative joint disease affecting about 630 million people worldwide. Although osteoarthritis can damage any joint in your body, it most commonly affects joints in the hands, knees, hips and spine. It occurs when the protective cartilage on the ends of your bones wears down and is the reason for 95 per cent of the hip replacement operations. The question is; why does the cartilage wear down? For a long time, it was assumed that osteoporosis was a regrettable but inevitable symptom of old age, the

idea being that joints simply wear out. However, not all older people develop osteoarthritis while many young people get the disease, which suggests that other factors are involved. Another theory was that increased mechanical loads on weight-bearing joints was the culprit. However, in obese people, osteoarthritis is also common in non-load bearing joints, suggesting that additional load is not the only cause. The breakthrough came when scientists discovered that body fat secretes its own joint-destroying inflammatory chemicals (adipokines) and microinflammation was discovered in ageing cartilage. Systemic inflammation, scientists realised, could be the link.

www.awakeningsme.com

page 40-41 Osteoarthritis.indd 40

INFLAMMATORY KILLER

“Low-grade inflammation and oxidative stress underlie chronic osteoarthritis,” say Elizabeth Dean and Rasmus Hansen in their research article for the US National Library of Medicine 1. Dean and Hansen argue that the inflammatory western diet and a sedentary lifestyle are major contributing factors in the prevalence of osteoarthritis. “… the Western diet and inactivity are pro-inflammatory, whereas a plant-based diet and activity are anti-inflammatory, and low-grade inflammation and oxidative stress (e.g. continual exposure to chemicals and toxins) underlying osteoarthritis often coexist with lifestyle-related risk factors and conditions,” state Dean and Hansen.

Medical scientists are now trying to unravel the relationships between systemic inflammation, obesity and local joint osteoarthritis but by identifying inflammation as a cause, it throws open the potential triggers to everything from food intolerances like gluten and dairy to smoking and stress as well as leaky gut, which can ironically be caused by osteoarthritis medication.

Presently, the first line interventions for osteoarthritis include prescription medications, weight loss, exercise and physiotherapy, all of which can be helpful. Other therapies to consider are mind-body healing, acupuncture, osteopathy and chiropractic. However, some believe this is not enough and that underlying low-grade inflammation and oxidative stress need addressing to make real progress in alleviating osteoarthritis. One option is a Mediterraneantype diet. The whole, fibrous, colourful fruit and vegetables full of natural plant compounds (phytochemicals) and antioxidants protect against cellular damage, inflammation and support our gut bacteria. The diet is characteristically high in anti-inflammatory fish and olive oils and low in pro-inflammatory refined grains, refined sugars and processed meats. Among many other proven health benefits, the Mediterranean diet has helped people lose weight, perhaps by maintaining steady blood sugars. Losing weight lowers systemic inflammation and off-loads the weight bearing joints. Coupled with resistance and aerobic training, it can help shed fat and retain lean muscle, which will improve support and strength to the joints. Alternatively, a recent study concluded that adopting a vegetarian diet is more beneficial than an omnivorous diet. In a six-week trial of 40 people, significant improvements in pain, function and weight loss were reported after only two weeks.

SEPTEMBER - OCTOBER 2015

page 40-41 Osteoarthritis.indd 41

Researchers propose that this diet is lower in calories and higher in nutrients but also low in inflammatory acid and high in levels of antiinflammatory alpha-linoleic acid (an essential omega 3 fat). Overall, this rebalances pro and anti-inflammatory fats. Avoiding vegetables from the nightshade family, like potatoes, tomatoes, aubergine and peppers may be a beneficial caveat to this diet, but research is inconclusive. Key nutrients to focus on are in the box below.

STEP FORWARD

For sufferers of osteoarthritis, nutrient testing provides baseline measures from which recommendations can be made. Blood tests can determine the levels of inflammation, antioxidants, Vitamin D and essential fats. Suggested tests are as follows: • Fatty acid profile – indicates imbalances between pro and antiinflammatory fats.

41

• C-reactive protein – determines level of systemic inflammation. • Vitamin D – for bone remodelling. • Antioxidant vitamins A, C and E. • Amino acids - anti-inflammatory proteins cysteine, glutathione, and taurine. • Intestinal permeability test – high use of painkillers and medication can damage the intestinal cells. Damaged cells can lead to leaky-gut syndrome whereby increasing toxic irritants in the bloodstream can exacerbate the inflammation and osteoarthritis. A personalised nutritional therapy plan should focus on exercise and diet to optimise gut function and reduce inflammation and oxidative stress.

The healing power of

inversion therapy

Giving new meaning to the phrase ‘hanging about’, Inversion Therapy is a form of yoga therapy said to cure everything from heart murmurs, to back pain, migraine and depression? Words by Tamara Pitelen.

C

an the simple act of inverting our bodies and hanging upside down cure everything from heart murmurs to depression? It sounds too good to be true but according to Inversion Therapist and Yoga Teacher Paul Terrell it really is that simple and that effective, which is why he specialises in inverting clients in his one-on-one yoga therapy sessions. “One of the great things about Hatha yoga is that we can use it as a first aid kit to cure ourselves,” Terrell says.

“Really cure ourselves, not just take away symptoms. For example, going upside down is the only known cure for heart flutter, and that’s medically proven.” Another measurable benefit of hanging upside down is that it rebalances the hormone system. Conditions like cystic ovaries, difficulties getting pregnant, and menstrual disorders, are all improved and in most cases cured by regular inversion, Terrell says. Yoga practitioners have been talking about the health benefits of inverted poses such as headstand and shoulder-stand for centuries but now we also have the science to back this up. Researchers have studied the psychological effects of inverted poses, which have been found to dramatically affect hormone levels, brain arousal, blood pressure, fluid balance and more. Among other changes, when the body turns upside down the heart rate slows and the blood vessels dilate. The extra blood in the upper body stimulates the baroreceptor nerves in the aorta and neck, which in turn signal the central nervous system to lower blood pressure and slow down brainwaves.

ANIMAL HYPNOSIS

The magical effect of inversion is also well known in the animal world. It’s called Tonic Immobility and is a natural state of paralysis that animals enter, often called animal hypnosis. It may be related to mating in animals like sharks. It may also be a way of deterring predators aka ‘playing dead’. “If you turn a shark upside down, it’ll go into a trance,” Terrell says. “If you want to do magic acts with rabbits and doves, you hide them in your jacket hanging upside down so they go very still and won’t move around. Mammals and very primitive animals go into trance when you hang them upside down. We’re also able to use it with headstands and hand-stands.” In yoga, the shoulder and headstand are described as the queen and king of poses. “What this indicates is that these poses will give you more benefits than the others, so they’re royalty because you get so many benefits. Heart disease can be cured by going upside down. Headaches and migraines can be cured and I’ve been treating women who have difficulty getting pregnant and so far I have a 100 per cent success rate. “The trouble with doing headstand or shoulder-stand yourself is that you’re controlling it and you think, ‘I don’t want to be here longer than two minutes’ or ‘my arm hurts’. For most westerners, headstand and shoulder-stand are not comfortable

so the advantage of Inversion Therapy is that I basically do it for them, I can take someone very comfortably into inversion for a longer time. “Now, in a headstand and shoulder stand you do yourself, you’re compressing the spine but the way that I hang people, the spine is decompressed, so disc problems, stuck vertebra, etc are very often improved just by hanging. There’s a unique spinal twist in the first position which is rather like chiropractic but you’re letting yourself go as much as you want to so it’s very safe.”

UPSIDE DOWN YOU’RE TURNING ME

How does just turning upside down cure conditions like heart murmurs and depression? Terrell explains: “What is the cause of heart flutter? It’s to do with stress; emotional and mental stress, and how do we relieve that? We hang upside down and we slow the brain down. By slowing the brain down, our physiology changes. The heart does not have to work so hard because the brain is getting its oxygen without any effort. Emotionally, mentally and physiologically, the heart is now allowed to rest. What do hearts do? They beat evenly. So with the pressure off, the heart gets back into shape. Inversion is a cure for heart flutter and it’s the only known cure. There are some pills for heart flutter but they don’t cure it, they only keep it at

43

bay. You’ve got upside down, headstand, handstand and shoulder stand. I do it in a relaxed way where people don’t have to do anything so they can do it for longer and be more comfortable.”

UPS FOR THE DOWNS

As far as the link between depression and inversion, when you go upside down, it slows the brain, dropping the brainwave into an alpha or theta state. Terrell says a person can only run the programmes for depression in beta brain waves. Alpha and theta waves won’t support depressive programmes. “So although you want to feel really sorry for yourself and you repress the feelings and you don’t look after your needs and you try to control everything by planning and planning… you can’t do that in alpha waves so the depression disappears and a new open space of consciousness opens up. That’s the whole point of the upside down, to change the brainwaves.” Inversion Therapist and Yoga Teacher Paul Terrell regularly visits Dubai for private sessions and workshops. His next visits are 9-16 September, 5-12 October and 18-25 November. The founder and Principal of The School of Inversion Therapy, he works out of Life’n One Wellness Centre in Jumeirah 1. To book a session with him on his next visit, email info@lifenone.com or call 04 443 6676. Go to www.inversiontherapy.net for more information on Paul and inversion therapy. www.lifenone.com

Hanging upside down is a powerful healing technique because, among other things, it slows the brain down, which changes our brainwave state and physiology. This heals everything from depression and migraines to back pain, infertility and heart murmurs.

Live Forever Juice Prevent mental physical and mental illness with this powerful juice.

T

he ingredients in this Live Forever Juice will keep you in top mental and physical health but remember, it’s always better to use organic ingredients when possible. Here are some of the health benefits of the different ingredients:

Beetroot is clinically proven to not just reduce your risk of cancer but also to shrink and remove colon cancer tumours. Beetroot juice has enzymes that build muscle if the juice is consumed 30 minutes before a workout. Sweet potato has a large amount of iodine, this supports thyroid function which is for metabolic and digestive processes. Celery lowers blood pressure and cucumber flushes out liver. Ginger soothes the digestive system, builds the immune system and lowers cholesterol. Turmeric is a powerful anti-inflammatory that also detangles nerves in the brain to prevent dementia and has more than 30 proven cancer and health benefits; it truly is the wonder spice. Ingredients • 400 gms carrots, cut off tops and peel if dirty • 1 beetroot, peeled • 1 apple, only use organic apples. If you can’t get organic don’t use apples because the chemical load of the pesticides outweigh the benefits. • 1 sweet potato, small to medium sized, peeled. • Half a cucumber, if it’s organic, do not peel as the skin has a lot of nutritional value. If not organic then do peel • Small piece of ginger root, peel the ginger. Can be hot so start off with a small amount. • Small piece fresh turmeric, can be strong so start off small. If fresh root is not available, use dry turmeric but very little, half a teaspoon goes a long way. Pour this juice into a blender and add: • 1 banana • 3 or 4 strawberries, use frozen fruit to give a cold smoothie consistency • 1/3 Cup wild blueberries • 2 Tablespoons hemp seed Blend, drink and joyfully extend your life!

The

healing power of active honey All honey is not created equal. There’s ordinary honey and then there’s active Manuka honey that’s said to have a host of powerful healing properties that other honey does not. Tamara Pitelen investigates.

H

oney has been used for centuries as a healing agent for many ills. A natural antibiotic and an anti-inflammatory, it’s thought to have germicidal and antiseptic properties so can do everything from be applied to burns and wounds to alleviate arthritis and hayfever. A potent anti-bacterial agent, it’s also been widely used to heal stomach lining and to help address Helicobacter pylori overgrowth - the ‘bad’ bacteria that can cause so many digestive issues. While all honey is said to be beneficial (with the arguable exception of the very cheap offerings crowding the supermarket shelves), advocates claim that Manuka honey has something that other types of honey don’t. Manuka honey is made from the New Zealand native Leptospermum Scoparium or Manuka Bush (Manuka is the Maori name for the shrub). The

beekeepers set up their hives in wild uncultivated areas in which Manuka bushes grow. The bees then gather nectar primarily from the flowers of the Manuka bush. The honey-making process is enriched by the pollutionfree environment of New Zealand. Manuka is a dark cream to dark brown honey with a strong woody, earthy flavour.

www.awakeningsme.com

page 46-47 Manuka-.indd 46

WONDER FOOD

In 1981, researchers at the Honey Research Unit at New Zealand’s University of Waikato discovered that some strains of Manuka honey have an extraordinary, naturally present, very stable property not found in any other variety of honey. This special property comes from the nectar of the Manuka flower and

is distinct from the enzyme activity that is common to most honeys. It sets Manuka honey apart as one of nature’s true wonder foods. So what is this magic ingredient that makes some Manuka honey different and special? It’s a chemical called methylglyoxol, which appears to be responsible for most of its antimicrobial activity. In fact, in a lab environment, Methylglyoxal killed every bacteria or virus it was tested on - even many of the super-bugs that have become antibiotic resistant. Some of the bacteria and viruses that Methylglyoxal killed in a lab environment include Helicobacter pylori, the bacterium known to cause many stomach ulcers and duodenal ulcers; Staphylococcus aureus or MRSA, also known as the super-bug for its high level of resistance to most available antibiotics; Escherichia coli (E. Coli), known to cause serious food poisoning, and a sore throat virus, Streptococcus pyogenes.

UNIQUE MANUKA FACTOR

Here’s the ‘but’ though. Not all Manuka honey contains high levels of the magical Methylglyoxal. So in order to help you identify the good stuff, they developed a rating system known as the Unique Manuka Factor (or UMF). The higher the UMF, the higher the concentration of methylglyoxal. In order to be considered “active Manuka honey,” the product must have a UMF of 10 or greater. In order to test the UMF activity, firstly all the other antibacterial effects of the honey being tested are removed. Then the antibacterial activity of this honey is tested in a laboratory and compared to that of a phenol solution (phenol is a strong antiseptic). The UMF number equates to the percentage phenol solution with the same bacterial killing power e.g.

scars. It may also help to accelerate the healing process by keeping wounds infection-free.

HOW TO USE MANUKA HONEY

Coughs and colds Honey, together with lemon, has been used for many years as a soothing drink for coughs and colds. It’s also used by some to prevent acid reflux and heartburn.

Manuka can be used as any other honey, for example, spread on toast, or as a sweetener in drinks. There is some evidence though that the activity may be damaged by boiling water, so don’t add it until the drink is cool enough to sip. As an alternative, take a teaspoon two to three times a day. Burns and wounds Many people use Manuka honey as a topical application for minor ailments such as cuts, burns, wounds, acne, abscesses, eczema, cracked skin and skin ulcers. It helps keep the air away from the skin and helps to lessen pain and prevent formation of blisters and

Active Manuka honey is available through out the UAE at Holland & Barrett stores.

Arthritis and rheumatism Arthritic and rheumatic conditions are both said to have been helped by honey mixed with cider vinegar aka ‘honegar’. The fact that bee-stings may help relieve rheumatism has been ignored as an old-wives tale for centuries. However, in 1936, a German doctor recorded that honey contained some of the neutralising acids found in the poison of bee stings. Hayfever Hayfever has been found to improve particularly when a local honey is eaten and honey is also reputed to help symptoms of catarrh (build-up of mucus in the nose or throat) and digestive troubles. When should you not eat honey? Honey should be eaten with caution by people with diabetes as it has such high sugar content. Honey is not suitable for children under the age of 12 months because of the very slight risk of botulism. This is a precautionary measure - the risk is extremely small and non-existent to those over 12 months old.

F

reely moving our bodies in time with music and rhythm is a primal human instinct, it develops a direct body-spirit connection and helps release stuck patterns in our bodies, mind, emotions and spirit. In simple terms, it’s about losing yourself in the music and letting go. It’s about giving your body the freedom to express your mind and spirit with no judgments about whether you look graceful or beautiful or cool or however else you think you should be looking. Also called movement therapy, moving meditation or trance dance, Ecstatic Dance is an inner and outer journey of moving meditation. It is a natural high and the true meaning of that well-known spiritual phrase, ‘dance like no one is looking’ and one opportunity to do this in a group of like-minded people is at an Ecstatic Dance event like the one I went to in Hawaii recently when I went over to visit an old friend who had moved there from California. When she suggested I pay her a visit, I jumped at the chance. She met me at the airport and informed me we were heading straight to the Garden Temple Ecstatic Dance. I spent my first few hours on the magical island with a community very passionate about dancing. The rules are simple. No talking, no photography and no shoes. You move

however you wish. You let go and simply dance like no one is watching. Absolutely no alcohol is consumed. You just dance. Ecstatic dance communities are passionate about movement and celebrate the spiritual ritual of letting go of inhibitions. Respecting the space and others you move every inch of your body in a trace like state. Allowing the music and vibe to take over in a way no other form of exercise allows.

YOU SHOULD BE DANCIN’

No judgement is passed, no intoxication needed. The DJ feels the mood of audience and takes you on a voyage of self-discovery. Starting with down tempo progressive trance you cannot help but begin to sway. As the beat increases you find yourself lost to the sound. Losing control of your arms, your feet cannot stay still and you find yourself deep in an aerobic movement, stimulating muscles and deepening your breath. There is no doubt you feel like you have had an incredible work out. As the music spirals back to a slower pace you feel the energy run through your veins. The music brings you into a meditative trance, heart pumping and sweat dripping; your body is grateful for the movement. Your circulation is flowing and without the poisons of alcohol running through your organs. All ages and fitness levels can enjoy and benefit from an hour of non-stop dancing. The workout is fun. Perhaps it takes you back to earlier years when every weekend was spent on a dance floor of club. If you’ve been known to have a little boogie in your home and long for somewhere to shake your body, Ecstatic Dance is for you. I love to dance but determined to look after my body I do not want to intoxicate it with alcohol, yet I struggle to avoid the temptation when in a club. I have never taken well to dance classes that insist on following a routine or instructor. I believe dance is a movement of freedom. Ecstatic Dance gives you the space to move in a way that feels right for you.

neanderthal man goes new age

Neanderthal Man

goes metrosexual

Neanderthal Man is a 40-something, ex-British soldier who collects exotic knives and can strip down a semi-automatic rifle blind-folded. Until recently, he thought ‘chakras’ was a Latina pop star whose hips don’t lie. But things changed for the card-carrying caveman when he met the Tree Hugger… this issue, he gets groomed...

L

ast week my boss said he was sending me to the UK for a meeting at our head office. Great, I thought, business class lounge here I come. But then he said it might be a good idea if I tidied myself up a little, you know, a haircut from a proper barber. The cheek of the man! If my 24 years in the British army taught me anything it was that a man just needs to shave his own head once a month and that no money need ever go to someone with a pair of scissors using words like ‘layers’ and ‘highlights’. Mortified and outraged, I stormed home to complain to the Tree Hugger. I knew I’d be able to count on my little hippie to stand up for crimes against

hair liberation. So imagine my surprise when she started Googling phrases like ‘male grooming’ and five minutes later I was booked in with one of them poncy upmarket men’s salons that do things that are frankly unmanly and unnecessary. Tree Hugger then announced she’d be coming with me to talk to the stylist first. The room started spinning. Was I really, for the first time in 35 years, going to give someone actual real money to cut my hair? Someone with a diploma that read ‘stylist’ and it wasn’t being ironic? It was monstrous. The hairdresser’s name was Reuben. His facial hair was so precisely manicured it looked like it had been tattooed on. Him and the Tree Hugger then started talking about me over my head. “So what we’re after Reuben,” Tree Hugger said, “is quite short at the sides and longer on top for height. I’ve got some photos here of the kind of thing…” at which point she whipped open her laptop in the middle of the salon and showed Reuben a load of photos of George Clooney from different angles on the red carpet. George. Flipping. Clooney. “Ooh yes,” said Reuben, nodding appreciatively and making mmmm sounds as Tree Hugger explained. At last she left and Reuben got to work. I closed my eyes and pretended I was somewhere better. Like in the trenches during the Falklands war.

www.awakeningsme.com

page 58 Neanderthal man.indd 58

Was it over when my hair was cut? No apparently not. Reuben told me that I also needed an all organic facial and waxing; in a tone that suggested terrible, awful things would happen if I did not have an organic facial and waxing. Facials, it turns out, involve having gravel rubbed into your face but what came next, I could never have been prepared for – do other men really get this done all the time? Reuben disappeared behind a screen then reappeared with cotton wool balls covered in hot wax, which he then shoved up my nostrils and in my ears. There was no escaping the inevitable next step. A minute later, he forcefully yanked out the cotton wool taking my nose and ear hairs with it. Why waste time with waterboarding and fingernail pulling when all you need to do to get a prisoner of war to talk is hot wax and cotton wool balls? Tears streamed down my face as I staggered blindly out of the salon, pausing just long enough to pay for the experience. Plus tip. A tip! I was ready to complain long and hard at Tree Hugger who was waiting in a nearby café but her little face lit up when she saw me. And then I remembered the body parts she gets slathered in hot wax. So I shut up and ordered a coffee. It’s what George would have done. The poncy git.
