OWNER’S PROFILE:
MEET GABRIEL NAVARRO, MARCEL NAVARRO, AND MARTIN PICO: THE BRAINTRUST BEHIND TAMARACK RESORT

With busy schedules and spring activity at a peak, it isn’t often we get the three Tamarack owners together for a sit-down conversation. For the past few years, Tamarack has enjoyed a tremendous amount of momentum: introducing mountain-modern amenities, property/infrastructure improvements, as well as a new homes and homesites.
These are, indeed, exciting times at Tamarack. Together—Gabe, Marcel, and Martin—continually strive to deliver accessible, deeply rewarding living experiences that make Tamarack the premier resort community in the West and the only ski, golf, and lake resort in the U.S. Here’s what they had to say.
Q: WHAT INITIALLY ATTRACTED YOU TO TAMARACK AND HOW DID YOU DISCOVER IT?
MARCEL: A broker brought us the opportunity to acquire Tamarack early in 2018. The beauty of the resort—its surroundings and its scale—drove us to make a visit here and once we did, we were hooked. We spent about a year working with strategic stakeholders to be able to ultimately acquire all the necessary pieces to put it together.
MARTIN: Our point of contact at Tamarack during the diligence and negotiations was Louise Francesconi, who at the time, and still today, is the President of the Tamarack Municipal Association, often referred to as the Homeowner’s Association. The fact that she and other homeowner’s banded together to acquire the operations during the difficult times made an impression on us. The love and passion that the homeowner community had for Tamarack was very telling and it made us excited to get involved.

Q: WHAT MAKES TAMARACK SO SPECIAL FOR YOU?
GABE: My wife and I have three children, all boys, and our home is full of photos of us recreating at Tamarack—we make memories each day that we will cherish all our lives. This is our happy place, in large part because of the number of amenities and activities there are all year long. We have been fortunate to be able to spend time at Tamarack the past few summers: whitewater rafting, ziplining, hiking and biking, salmon fishing on the salmon river, wakeboarding on the lake until 9:00 pm. We don’t stop till the day winds down—and then we do it all over again the next day. One of my wife’s favorite things to do is to hop on an eBike for an hour or two a day to explore. My youngest’s new love is golf and he is on me every day to spend tons of time at Tamarack this summer to play the Osprey Meadows Golf Course.
MARCEL: When you look at the big picture, there are very few places in the U.S. like Tamarack, offering families year-round luxury living in such a gorgeous setting. It’s large enough to offer a wide range of recreational options for weeks on end, yet small enough that parents can feel comfortable letting their kids be kids. The freedom and sense of independence that my boys feel at Tamarack is far beyond what they can have back home.
Q: AS TAMARACK EVOLVES, WHAT ARE YOUR KEY PRIORITIES FOR AMENITIES AND REAL ESTATE DEVELOPMENT?
MARTIN: This summer will be transformational for Tamarack for several reasons: 1) the opening of the Robert Trent Jones Jr.-designed championship golf course, 2) the completion of the 12,000 square-foot, Mid-Mountain Lodge & Event Center, and 3) pending final approval from the state, the commencement of construction of the Tamarack Marina on Lake Cascade. These are three foundational amenities that we have been excited about for some time. We feel it is important to make summer as big a season at Tamarack as the winter is. Not just for families, but for groups and meeting planners. We are providing, what we feel, will be one of the most inviting destinations in the Pacific Northwest for groups and gatherings throughout the year: spring, summer, winter, and fall.
GABE: Real estate-wise this is an exciting time, as well. We are very excited about the response on the Ponderosa Ridge Villas that we are developing together with Alturas Homes. Everyone who tours them is blown away by the design and the value that they offer. The first two were sold prior to them being completed this past December and we will be completing another eight homes this year…and we’re already working on a second phase.
Q: WHAT ARE THE MOST EXCITING DEVELOPMENTS AT TAMARACK THAT WE CAN LOOK FORWARD TO?
GABE: We have been spending a lot of time over this past season re-imagining the base Village area and the overall resort Master Plan. While we have made some small tweaks here and there, over the past few years, we thought it important to take a step back and give thought as to how the original, 20-year-old master plan could be improved. We are excited with the progress and hope to be able to share our vision later this year.
MARCEL: Later in 2024, we will acquire over 500 acres adjacent to the resort, which when combined with 260 acres that we own on the other side of it, will open the door for our being able to develop more than 800 during the next decade. We are exploring various ideas of how to do so in a way that elevates the overall Tamarack experience.
Q: HOMEOWNERS OFTEN MENTION THE EXCEPTIONAL VALUE OF TAMARACK. WHAT DO YOU THINK SETS IT APART FROM OTHER MOUNTAIN COMMUNITIES?
GABE: Real estate values at Tamarack today are considerably less than they are at other mountain communities, in large part because of where we are on our evolution cycle. The reality, however, is that at Tamarack, you get so much more than you do at most of these communities. We bill ourselves as being America’s only ski, golf, and lake resort –that is a true statement. When you layer on top of that our 20+ miles of downhill bike trails (and many more for cross country), it becomes clear that Tamarack offers four distinct reasons to visit during year. As I mentioned, we are still early in our lifecycle. As we continue to add amenities, like the ones this summer—golf, the marina, the mid-mountain lodge—or the future Club House, the mountain terrain expansion, and additional lifts, we fully anticipate that real estate values will continue to climb.
MARCEL: The uniqueness of our being able to imagine and control the mountain operations, the real estate development, and the hospitality components is special and something that is often overlooked. At most resorts these pieces are usually controlled by many different groups. Having control of all allows us to look at all of the pieces from the guest and homeowner perspective and think about what we can do to make it more special. This is evident in things such as Tamarack Club Members having access to a priority ski line, to avoid having to wait in line. This is something that most resorts are unable to offer because the operator of the mountain is not affiliated with the developer of the real estate. We are unique in that regard, and it ensures a better overall experience for owners and guests.

HOMEOWNER PROFILE: MATT AND SHARON GONSER

Matt and Sharon met and fell in love in New York 30 years ago. From there they moved around some: to Seattle, then Round Rock, Texas, and then Boise. “Seattle was too rainy, and Texas was unbearably hot 100 days out of the year. We wanted to move to a place that was outdoorsy and had four distinct seasons to enjoy,” says Matt Gonser. “We chose Boise…that was seven years ago.” As ski enthusiasts and true lovers of the great outdoors, it was just a matter of time before Matt and Sharon discovered Tamarack.
Here’s their story.
Q: SO, YOU CAME UP TO TAMARACK AND FELL IN LOVE? INSTANTLY?
MATT: From an ad believe it or not. This was around January 2018, I think. We were attracted by the skiing and took a drive up there to stay a few days and experience what they had to offer. It was a great weekend—fresh powdery snow and sunny—we fell in love almost immediately. Our twin boys really enjoyed it, so we started going up to Tamarack regularly, staying in different places. We developed a routine: come up on a Friday, and ski, hit the hot tub, play board games, then go to the Village and dine. Repeat on Saturday.
SHARON: We had so much fun that first trip. We stayed in a cozy, rustic Lodge and we all had a great weekend. Lots of snow, incredible skiing, and the dining was good, not your typical resort fair. It was more original, had more flair and variety.
Q:
WHEN DID YOU DECIDE TO BUY?
MATT: We looked around quite a bit in 2020 and 2021 at a number of communities and decided Tamarack was far and away the place for us. We ended up buying Lot 8 at Aspen Glade so we could build our own custom mountain modern home. We closed in April 2022, broke ground summer of 2022, and moved in December 2023.
SHARON: We went all in…built the mountain house we dreamed of and joined The Club to take advantage of all the social events and gatherings. We also added golf, which we all plan to play a lot more of now.
Q: WHAT ACTIVITIES DO YOU ALL ENJOY?
SHARON: We originally came for the skiing, but now we really enjoy each season up here…the boating, jet skis, the golf, hiking, biking, you name it. Tamarack is one of the only TRUE four-season outdoor communities that offers something fun every month.

Q: WHAT DO YOU LIKE BEST ABOUT TAMARACK?
MATT: First and foremost, the fact that it’s a year-round community like Sharon said. Secondly, the sense of community up here—everyone is so friendly and helpful, not just the Members and owners, but all the staff here that make it special. The TamFam spirit really resonates with us. Thirdly, the hospitality and dining is a cut above other resorts—the dining and entertainment are elevated at Tamarack. And lastly, we feel this is a great investment compared to other master-planned communities in the area. You get more here, in terms of value. The Tamarack ownership team has delivered again and again on everything they promised. The momentum here is real and they continue to deliver on the master plan.
Q: WOULD YOU RECOMMEND TAMARACK TO OTHERS?
SHARON: Without question, in fact our goal is to bring folks up here regularly, family and friends, so they can discover first-hand all that Tamarack offers. And there’s never a bad time to come here—it’s a blast spring, summer, fall, and winter.
MATT: You know it’s funny, I’m a winter guy, so the skiing was huge. I have a friend that goes to Breckenridge and says they stay all day and average about 8 runs a day. I told him we get 8 runs in one hour! And we probably get 40 runs a day. There’s no congestion or standing in long lines. We get to spend the whole day actually skiing, not waiting. And I tell him also that skiing is just the tip of the iceberg. There are amenities and activities throughout the year. For us, Tamarack is a place to congregate with family and friends and create all these great memories each time we’re here. So yeah, I would recommend Tamarack to any family looking for an all-season outdoor resort community.”

1. CAN YOU TELL US A HIDDEN GEM IN VALLEY COUNTY THAT ONLY LOCALS KNOW ABOUT?
I sure can! However, I know that answer because of discovery and exploration w/ the family as locals. I recommend exploring yourself. You never know what you may find.
2. DONNELLY IS KNOWN AS THE CROSSROADS TO RECREATION, WHAT WOULD YOU SAY IS YOUR FAVORITE WAY TO RECREATE?
Skiing and outdoor time w/ the family are at the top of the list. Whether that is camping, hiking or just sitting around a fire.
3. WHERE WOULD WE FIND YOUR FAVORITE VIEWPOINT IN TAMARACK?
At the top of course! Runner up is the deck at The Club’s Snack Shack.
JEFF KEMPTHORNE
4. IN THREE SENTENCES OR LESS TELL US A LITTLE BIT ABOUT YOURSELF. I love anything outdoors! You can hear us coming a mile away as my wife, Natasha and I have three little ones who are living their best up here in Valley County.
5. IN YOUR OPINION WHAT’S THE COOLEST DESIGN TREND YOU ARE SEEING IN HOMES TODAY?
High end appliances in the kitchen and function in the kitchen. It is such a great meeting place to unwind and enjoy family and friends.
6. WHAT WOULD YOU BE DOING IF YOU WERE NOT HELPING PEOPLE BUY OR SELL HOMES?
Talking to people about buying or selling properties or land as I plan my next adventure. As said in a song, “you can’t buy happiness but you can buy dirt”.
7. WHAT ARE YOUR TOP 5 MOVIES IN NO PARTICULAR ORDER?
Stand by Me, Darjeeling Limited, Patton, Return of the Man from Snowy River, and Australia.
8. IF YOU HAD TO EAT ONE MEAL, EVERY DAY FOR THE REST OF YOUR LIFE, WHAT WOULD IT BE?
Pizza or Clean Simple Eats Nut Butters and Carrots.
9. WHAT WOULD YOU MOST LIKE TO TELL YOURSELF AT AGE 13?
Listen to your parents, they told me “change is inevitable growth is optional”. I would add “nobody wins afraid of losing”.
10. LASTLY, WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE THING ABOUT WORKING IN REAL ESTATE?
Seeing people find a place they love and bring their family to enjoy it together!
