RUMINATION GALLERY & RETREAT
SITUATED WITHIN MERCHISTON PARK ALONG EDINBURGH’S UNION CANAL, MY PROJECT IS A COMBINATION OF AN ART GALLERY [LVL -2], AND A RETREAT SPACE, WITH PRIVATE ROOMS FOR OVERNIGHT STAYS [LVL -1] AND MEDITATION ROOMS [LVLS -3 & -4].
THE COMPLEX IS MEANT TO SERVE AS A SPACE OF TRANQUILLITY AWAY FROM THE BUSY URBAN HUB SURROUNDING—A REFUGE FOR PEOPLE TO SELFREFLECT, TO RUMINATE VIA ART, VIA SOCIAL, OR INDIVIDUAL ACTIVITY.
TO EMBODY THIS SACRED TRANQUILLITY I LOOK TOWARDS THE NATURAL—PARTICULARLY TOWARDS LIGHT AND WATER. NOT WANTING TO DISTURB THE SERENE PARK, I DECIDED TO BUILD UNDERGROUND. WATER HAS ALWAYS BEEN A SACRED ELEMENT, A TRANSITIONAL THRESHOLD, AND SO I PULLED THE CANAL INTO THE PARK, CREATING A GLAZED WATERCHANNEL SKYLIGHT ABOVE MY CIRCULATION, BOTH WATERWAY AND PATHWAY SPIRALLING DOWN AROUND THE CENTRAL COURTYARD.
EACH LEVEL IS DIVIDED INTO 4 ZONES OF OCTAGONAL ROOMS. IN THE GALLERY [-2], EACH ZONE IS DEDICATED TO EXPERIENCING THE ARTWORK THROUGH ONE OF 4 CORE BODILY MOVEMENTS: WALKING, STANDING, SITTING DOWN, AND LYING DOWN. IN THE RETREAT [-3&-4], EACH ZONE IS DEDICATED TO ONE OF 4 CONTRASTING SENSORY THEMES: LIGHT VS DARK, AND SOUND VS SILENCE.

INSPIRED BY THE SITE’S PROXIMITY TO THE SEA, AND THE EFFECTS OF SAID PROXIMITY, I AIMED TO EXPERIMENT WITH THE CONCEPT OF WEATHERING.
ALONGSIDE BEING HOSTS TO A LOCAL MARKET, MY STRUCTURES PRIMARILY FUNCTION AS ART EXHIBITS, WITH ADVENTUROUS ROUTES, AND ARTWORK DISPLAYED BOTH INDOORS AND OUT. THOSE OUTDOORS WILL BE ENCASED WITHIN BLOCKS OF MATERIAL THAT, COMPLETELY EXPOSED TO THE NATURAL ELEMENTS, WEATHER AWAY TO SLOWLY EXPOSE THE ARTWORK EMBEDDED WITHIN.
WITH THIS, NATURE TAKES ON THE ROLE OF SCULPTOR ALONGSIDE THE EXHIBITION’S HUMAN ARTISTRY.

FORMERLY AN OFFICE FACILITY, THE EXISTING BUILDING HAS BEEN REFURBISHED INTO AN AP (ALTERNATE PROVISION) SCHOOL. IN PHASE 2, WE TACKLE THE FIRST FLOOR AND THE EXTERNAL AREAS, AIMING TO INCREASE THE PAN FROM 30 TO 64 PUPILS.

AIN MREISSI 125 — ENTRANCE DESIGN
A 32-FLOOR TWO-BLOCK RESIDENTIAL TOWER. IT IS QUITE A LUXURIOUS BUILDING, AND THE ENTRANCE WITH ITS VAST DOUBLE VOLUME HEIGHT REFLECTS THE SCALE OF THE PROJECT.
I VISITED THE SITE DURING VARIOUS STAGES OF CONSTRUCTION, FROM THE CONCRETE WORKS AND HARDSCAPING TO THE FINAL LANDSCAPING.

ENTRANCE DESIGN
THERE IS A CONTINUOUS MOTIF OF STRIPED GEOMETRY LEADING BOTH THE LINE OF SIGHT AND THE MOVEMENT OF THE RESIDENTS TOWARDS AND WITHIN THE ENTRANCES.
THIS STARTS WITH THE PERGOLA OUTSIDE, AND CONTINUES INTO THE ENTRANCE WITH HORIZONTAL STRIPS OF WOOD ON ITS CEILING,— THEN, EVOLVING INTO VERTICAL STRIPS OF MARBLE, ALMOST LIKE STALACTITES. THEY ARE LIT UP, BECOMING A SCULPTURAL CHANDELIER.
EACH STRIP VARIES IN LENGTH, CREATING AN ALGORITHMIC WAVE THAT INTERACTS WITH THE VIEWER’S MOVEMENT, OFFERING DIFFERENT VIEWS ALONG DIFFERENT ANGLES OF SIGHT.
THE CHANDELIERS CONTINUE ACROSS THE CEILING AND THEN CLIMB DOWN THE WALL OVERHEAD, TURNING HORIZONTAL, STARING DIRECTLY BACK TOWARDS THE CENTRAL DOORS.
THE FLOOR SUPPORTS THE MOMENTUM OF THIS GEOMETRIC MOTIF, WITH MARBLE SQUARES DOTTING ITS PLANE WHEREVER A CHANDELIER DROPS DOWN FROM ABOVE, DIRECTLY REFLECTING IT, AS IF ITS SHADOW.

A 14-FLOOR LUXURIOUS RESIDENTIAL BUILDING. IT IS QUITE THE IDEAL LOCATION, WITH GREAT VIEWS TOWARDS THE GREEN AUB CAMPUS AND THE VAST MEDITERRANEAN SEA.

ENTRANCE DESIGN
THE CEILING’S FLOWING DESIGN LEADS THE VISITOR’S LINE OF SITE TOWARDS THE OLIVE TREE FRAMED WITHIN THE BACK GARDEN, HONOURING THE TREE’S ELEGANCE AND BEAUTY.
IT IS FORMED OF A SOFTLY UNDULATING WAVE, AN ORGANIC FEATURE TO CONTRAST THE SHARP GEOMETRIES OF THE ENTRANCE’S STRUCTURE.
THE SCULPTED ROOF LEADING ACROSS THE ENTRANCE CREATES A CLEAR PATHWAY, PAVING THE WAY FOR THE NATURE AT THE BUILDING’S FRONT TO COME, SWEEP IN—CONNECTING THE FRONT AND BACK GARDENS WITH AN ORGANIC TUNNEL.
VERTICAL STRIPS OF WOOD HANG DOWN, LIT UP. WITH THE DIRECTIONALITY UNDULATING SEQUENCE, THEY, TOO, HELP DIRECT THE LINE OF SIGHT TOWARDS THE OLIVE TREE.

A WORK IN PROGRESS
A PROJECT INSPIRED BY THE DICHOTOMY BETWEEN THE STATE OF HOPELESSNESS & THE STATE OF HOPEFULNESS, AND THE PROCESSION FROM ONE TOWARDS THE OTHER.
We are set on a path, a strip of shore with sea further we go, the closer the waves encroach our feet—until we are standing at the mouth
A jagged cavern slopes down into the sea’s depths. a small stream of light beckons us forth. We central path—although there are others, winding side of us. These other paths quickly find their exits through gaps in the walls. Swim any which way in any dimension, explore and yes find light and then the exit, An exit— swim up, upwards, up into the light and surface into its brilliance. We are met with a chamber of sunshine streaming from above, above against a high, high wall. Close ahead steps beckon us forth—swim to them, lift yourself up, climb them, one step another, and we are at a height now where we can see: there’s a vast expanse, an open sky and an open sea. One step down and we’re on a boat, its sails set and blowing— Off we go.
