Smoke-free campus debate to continue Jasmine Martinez Editor-in-Chief @jasminesleuths

Continuing from Spring 2019, discussions over a proposed resolution for a 100 percent smokefree campus are moving forward with the Associated Students of Cerritos College, according to vice president-elect. Nathan Williams said one thing he is working to provide is an outlet for people can speak on the matter. He said he and president-elect, Kimberly Sayo, have discussed the matter and have taken a stance as well. “We are looking at health and safety issues. I want to make sure, at least in the Senate, that we provide an opportunity for both sides to speak about it,” Williams explained, “It is something that the students want and we stand for the students.” President of Cerritos College, Jose Fierro, said he agrees with a smoke-free campus but understands that it is sometimes difficult with the implementation of new policies. Fierro said, “We cannot go from saying ‘smokers are being disrespectful to non-smokers’ to implementing in such a way that we are disrespecting those who are smokers.”

Designated smoking area: The Associated Students of Cerritos College are moving forward with discussions regarding a 100 percent smoke-free campus and want to provide outlets for both sides of the debate. ASCC senate meetings will continue on Sept. 18, 2019.

However, he feels the complaints he’s received from the Child Development Center children being exposed to smoke, as well as pregnant women are valid conversations to have. “Little kids, they don’t have the ability of saying ‘go on and smoke

elsewhere,’” he explained. To Fierro, mindfulness is important when it comes to implementing-- saying a smokefree campus, at least in common areas, is something to consider. The initial resolution proposed by Henry Rios, alcohol and other

drugs prevention manager for Norwalk and Hawaiian Gardens, prohibits cigarettes, cigars, and nicotine products such as vapes that are not regulated by the FDA. The resolution would not allow students, faculty, etc. to be able

to smoke on campus property, in both indoor and outdoor areas, including parking lots. Fierro believes it should be an overtime transition. ASCC Senate meetings are set to continue on Sept. 18, allowing for outlets on both sides.

The Cerritos College food court has re-opened its doors for the fall 2019 semester with three new vendors, offering a refreshingly updated array of food options. The first new addition is Perfect Timing, specializing in asian inspired food and bowls. Returning Falcons will find themselves reminded of its predecessor, the Bowl, only with an increased number of options. The Grill at La Mesa serves as a general restaurant, offering a

variety of burgers, mexican food, and a plethora of breakfast options such as breakfast burritos, quesadillas, and sandwiches. The Grill at La Mesa serves as a revamped iteration of burdog, as student Tristin Baeza states, “It’s better than Burdog, Burdog was trash.” Rounding out the new additions is Healthy Blender, which offers drinks such as smoothies, boba, bubble tea, as well as light meals in the form of crepes. These changes have been well received by the student body, students such as Andrea Moralez have stated that they are pleased with the increased number of choices that are now offered. These new additions are all affordable , with a lunch combo from both Perfect Timing and

The Grill at La Mesa averaging seven to eight dollars per meal, and a specialty drink from Healthy Blender Averaging four to five dollars for a regular sized drink. Subway and The Culinary Arts cafe have both remained in the food court and student center, respectively, further expanding the options available to students. Perfect Timing is open from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Thursday, and 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Friday. The Grill at La Mesa and Healthy Blender are both open from 7a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Thursday, and from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Fridays. Optimism remains for student housing Jasmine Martinez Editor-in-Chief @jasminesleuths

Possible Cerritos College student housing would be less of a dorm-like environment, as seen in most colleges and universities, and more so for students with housing insecurity to transition to permanent housing, said president Jose Fierro. “We want to create a strong infrastructure in which our students are able to transition through the housing and to permanent housing,” he said. The details of the property on Barnwall St. and Studebaker Rd. are still being discussed with multiple partners involved, one being a non-profit organization that the school has worked with

before. Fierro said the name of the non-profit cannot be disclosed until further notice, but claims it is a reputable organization. He said that until they receive full funding to acquire the property and get the go-ahead from the state that the property passes the inspection. nothing is set in stone. However, Fierro remains optimistic that the sudent housing will come to fruition, also saying that the Cerritos College Board of Trustees expressed excitement over the idea. “We’re very excited, we hope the paperwork and all that continue to go well,” he said. Fierro said within 45-60 days he will have more information regarding updates.

Eid celebration unites Muslim community Jasmine Martinez Editor-in-Chief @jasminesleuths

“It’s all about caring, loving, you know… Islam is love, peace, that’s what it is.” Moussa Sangare was among the large crowd of folks who gathered their families for the 13th annual Eid at the Beach to celebrate Eid Al-Adha, an Islamic festival of sacrifice on Aug. 24. The Muslim Student Association at Cal State University Long Beach hosted the event, being one of the biggest student-led events for Muslims on the West Coast, said Leen Almahdi, president of the MSA. She said that after Ramadan, the holy month of fasting, it’s easier to feel a sense of community and connectedness due to an abundance of gatherings, but it is less common with Eid Al-Adha. “It’s really important to have

an event like this because we recognize that there’s a lot of folks in our community who are like within the lower socioeconomic status,” Almahdi explained, “So it’s really vital for us to have an affordable event where people can come and feel like there’s a community.” The event ground was filled with jumpers, obstacle courses and vendors. Activities included a Quran competition, henna and face painting, and a reptile show-- in which children eagerly petted a bearded dragon and a large yellow python, among other reptiles, while also chasing around a tortoise, squealing with laughter. Ibrahim Dyfan, who has attended Eid at the Beach before, acknowledged the stigma surrounding Muslims and that extremists in any form of religion should not represent an entire community.

“As you can see, we are peaceful, we’re playing with snakes, we’re building planes… everybody [is] with their families,” Dyfan said, “In a takeaway, don’t generalize. Know the individual themselves.” Dyfan said when he attended university, there weren’t events such as Eid at the Beach for Muslims to gather. “This is pretty good and this is going to continue growing. That’s what we want, is for everybody to know that we are not what they portray on TV. We are just normal people… we come from different cultures and different backgrounds,” Dyfan said. Sangare added that they need to get out with the community and explain what Islam is really about. “As Muslims, we are taught to learn,” Sangare said, “That’s what Islam teaches you, to be the best, best you can… and help people.”

Lover: Taylor Swift returns with her 7th album titled "Lover." The album released on Aug. 23 is a love letter to her fans, in which she shrugs off her past and embraces her future.

'Lover' wins the heart of fans R E V I E W Edgar Mendoza

Managing Editor @edgarstevenmen1

Taylor Swift's 7th album, released on Aug. 23, is a love letter to her fans, evident from the first song on the album. The first song, titled, "I Forgot That You Existed" brings fans out of the tone set by her previous album, "Reputation." While "Reputation" carried a grieving tone, seemingly reminiscent of an open wound, "Lover" closes the book on that chapter, ushering fans out of that era into a rebirth of the whimsical and bright Swift of old. Longtime fans will find themselves back in the era of the "Red" album, with each lyric feeling much like a splash of color on a fresh canvas. Each subsequent song paints a picture with words, offering insight into Swift's world unlike anything previously released by the artist in prior albums. No longer are we given songs focusing on breakups and moving on from past lovers, instead we are treated to songs about Swift's view of the world and her career. She embraces the "Cruel Lover" tugs on heartstrings, feeling much like a desperate summer love that one can't help but feel is doomed from the start. It expresses a beautiful declaration of love and a tragic cry for help in one breath. "Paper Rings" sees Swift venturing into a rock inspired genre, as she invokes 80's aspects that transports listeners to summer drives by the beach in a cherry red Corvette. "Lover" also touches on the emotions Swift battles when on stage and in the public eye, evident in her song "The Man." "The Man" speaks to both the fans and critics alike , asking what they would think of her if she had made the same choices in life, only as a man. Known for her numerous breakup songs, "The Man" speaks on how her many relationships would be viewed as an achievement had she been born male. She speaks on perception, and how the media has portrayed her as a result of her gender. This leads into the second act of the album, in which Swift speaks on real world issues that have affected her throughout her career.

D23 has concluded their threeday expo showing off an abundance of new information and announcements regarding the future of Disney's streaming service, their movies from its respected studios and their theme park attractions. On the first day of the convention they announced more information on their new streaming service, Disney Plus, which will stream television series and movies, including trailers of current films like "The Mandalorin," "The World According To Jeff Goldblum" and "Lady and the Tramp." In addition, they also announced three new Marvel shows -- "Ms. Marvel," "Moon Knight" and "SheHulk." A new Star Wars show, which focuses on Obi-Wan Kenobi with Ewan McGregor reprising his role in

the show was announced as well. Saturday was a day for film enthusiasts. D23 showcased their movie panel where they talked about and showed clips, concept arts, trailers and release dates for their upcoming films. Some of which included "Black Panther II" that is set to begin filming on May 6, 2022. "Eternals" cast actor Kit Harrington, who starred in the HBO series "Game of Thrones," as the Black Knight. "Black Widow," "Star Wars: Rise of Skywalker" and "Maleficent: Mistress of Evil" trailers were released and shown to the audience at the panels. Announcement of a Cruella film, Pixar's films like "Onward" and "Souls," a new trailer for "Frozen II" as well as a new animated movie called "Raya and The Last Dragon" will be premiering on Thanksgiving of next year. Trailers for Disney's upcoming

"Miss Americana and The Heartbreak Prince" is set in a metaphorical high school and speaks on societal views of politics and inequality. Fans will find themselves feeling as if they've found someone who sees them for who they are, and as the song winds down they are slowly brought back to reality, ever aware of the noise that clouds how they are perceived. "Lover" pays homage to Swift's 2014 album, "1989," with songs such as "ME!" as well as the titular song. Both songs conjure memories of simpler times where the only drama that one faced was a simple breakup. The third act of the album is slow and peaceful, and is the most heartfelt that the artist has ever sounded, as her voice is unobstructed by instruments and is largely focused on the vocals. The album ends with "Daylight," seemingly reminding listeners that past damage and pain may not fade, but it by no means defines you, just as it does not define her.

"Lover" is in many ways Swift's personal diary, each song handing the listener a key to the next chapter. - Edgar Mendoza

Whilst the previous album ended with "New Year's day," a song that wrapped listeners in a dark cloak and took them down a moonlit road towards a somber end, "Daylight" invites listeners into the sunshine of the lyrics, ending on a bright and hopeful note. "Lover" is in many ways Swift's personal diary, handing the listener a key to the next chapter with each passing track. New fans will find themselves welcomed to the album and music of Taylor Swift, whilst returning fans will find a joyful nostalgia in the return to music reminiscent of Swift's pop debut. "Lover" features 18 tracks and is available now, in four editions, each with a different poster and message from Taylor Swift, as well as a letter reminding you that you write your own story.

e future of Disney film "Jungle Cruise" was also shown, which is based on the ride that is in Disneyland Park. As well as a small discussion about "Mulan" including clips from the film. On the final day of the convention, the Disney theme parks and resorts with Bob Chapek, chairman of parks, experiences and products, announced new attractions to current Disney parks around the world. Attractions mentioned were Mickey and Minnie Runaway Railroad, with both at the Disneyland theme park in Anaheim and Disney's Hollywood Studios in Florida, along with a brief showing on Galaxies Edges new attraction Rise of the Resistance. The new Marvel land has been announced as Avengers Campus and will have attractions and activities based on Ant-Man, Spider-Man, Dr. Strange, Avengers, and Black Panther. Epcot will also be receiving new

attractions and lands. For, example a Mary Poppins ride, Guardians roller coaster and some new shows and parades for each park. The larger panels focused on their upcoming movies, shows and attractions that will make a debut throughout 2019 to 2022 and beyond. Though they did included smaller panels, one focused on the "Simpsons" and spoke about the new season. Another panel was about the music of "Aladdin," which included talk about venues and stores to buy some old and new merchandise from. One thing to consider is if D23 is something of interest, purchase tickets as early as possible, seeing as how Disney has a large following. Planning in advance is also suggested, otherwise, attendees may find themselves waiting in long lines. Overall, everything shown would excite any Disney fan, whether they like Star Wars, or Marvel, there was something for everyone.

Wasted time with CRX's'Peek' R E V I E W Elizabeth Corcoles A & E Editor @talonmarks

Band CRX has released their sophomore album, “Peek,” the ‘70s, ‘80s influenced album is a 10-track album consisting of well-written riffs, but ordinary lyrics and colorless vocals. “Peek” released on Aug. 23 following their 2016 album, “New Skin,” and have slightly altered their sound and have gone with a ‘70s, ‘80s vibe. The ‘70s, ‘80s influenced album is a 10-track album consisting of well-written riffs, but ordinary lyrics and colorless vocals. CRX seems like a band of rich dads who had nothing better to do with their time, so they formed a band to fill their free time with. “Peek” starts off with track “We’re All Alone,” which is upbeat and flashy, and that’s true to their changing sound, but Valensi fails to lure the audience. Valensi’s range is extremely short, with being un-

able to hit high notes, but he sounds decent when his vocals are layered and include backup vocals. “New Obsession,” the upbeat and fast paced track is one of the few tracks that weren’t as hard to listen to in its entirety, since Valensi’s vocals are layered and he has backup vocals. Another track that is an easier listen than the rest is “Falling.” Valensi seems to have to give it his all to be able to produce vocals that are pleasing to the ear. “Falling” has an upbeat melody, mid-way through the track is when Valensi ups his vocals and gives the audience a catchy, up-beat song. While having only a few tracks that are seemingly okay, most of the tracks have a catchy beat and riff, it’s the lyrics and vocals that are dragging the band down. As talented as a guitarist Valensi is, as a frontman singing may not be his forte. The album definitely has elements in which the band knows how to write an exceptional riff, but when it comes to vocals, they are a let down. Maybe in the 80s, CRX would have been off the charts, but in today’s music world, they are kinda second-rate.

Children are not trophies for winning votes

What our government calls “detention” has become deprivation, and unless we choose to make our voices heard, migrants will continue to be silenced and treated like beasts that need to be locked away. ICE, which stands for Immigration and Customs Enforcement, has begun to stand for imprisonment , carelessness, and having an extreme disregard for human life. This has become very evident in the treatment, or lack thereof that the migrants are

receiving while agents have been imprisoning them for already ridiculously long periods of time.. Attorneys who have visited the detainment facilities have found children sleeping on concrete floors, hungry and cold, with no way of maintaining personal hygiene. Parents are left with no way of tending to sick children , nor with any means of comforting them. Facilities claim to be providing migrants, adults and children and like, with food,

but with the physical conditions people are found in it doesn’t seem likely. Children are allegedly even being denied vaccinations and there have been reports that they have been denied proper medical care, while people are crammed into spaces like sardines. This treatment is comparable to that of a run down zoo with uncaring staff, with the difference being that the animals are held in higher regard. While animal rights activists would fight tooth and nail

to rescue animals in similar conditions, no one has so much as raised a finger to help children living in the same nightmarish situations. Children are kept in cages, as the migrant slowly becomes synonymous with a monkey in the eyes of Immigration. This captivity has paired nicely with a side of hypocrisy, as our President’s promise to drain the swamp has only resulted in a seemingly muddier swamp. Initially, President Trump had promised to rid this country of immigrants, but he has now shifted towards increasing detention sentences and having them stay even longer than they already have. This change can be attributed in part to the upcoming 2020 election , as citizens have begun to emulate the ways of old, seeing captives as trophies, proof of victory. This coupled with the fear that many citizens have of migrants has led to a deeply rooted paranoia, one which is reminiscent of the internment camps of the World War II era. Children are being abused, treated worse than a stray dog in a pound, some have even mysteriously disappeared. Of those that vanished in while in the “care” of ICE agents, a few have been found “unexplainably” in the clutches of human traffickers, sold like cattle for unimaginable purposes. Some are simply never found again, swept under the rug by the government as if they were trash and not children who were full of innocence, potential, and had no business being caged up because of circumstances out of their small handsl. Other children have reported all kinds of abuse at the hands

of agents meant to serve and protec, there has been alleged physical and sexual abuse. America is slowly undoing decades of progress in the span of a few months , and this downhill slope is becoming steeper with each passing day. As the aforementioned election draws ever nearer, it will become evident how this downward spiral has affected the minds of thousands of Americans. While some would feel sick to their stomachs to see the conditions migrants, especially children, toddlers, actual babies, are living in, a very vocal crowd would cheer and froth at the mouth to see many more migrants in such a state because of their countries of origin or the color of their skin. This group would praise the president taking credit for these crimes for protecting this “great” nation from these “violent criminal” five-year-olds. Our country was founded on the belief that that all men, not just all citizens, were created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain inalienable rights, that among these are Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness. These rights are being stripped away, as migrants cling desperately to the right to life, have lost the right to liberty, and can no longer pursue happiness. We hold these truths to be self evident, and we must now make our voices heard to make them once again. Through attending rallies, protests, or even through your vote, you can be a voice forthese migrants, and undo the deterioration our society is undergoing.

Convicted abusers have no place in the police force Kianna Znika

No more “black and blue” from the men in blue. Here’s something to be said about cops: If the men in blue want to be seen and respected as the community’s protectors, they should first refrain from giving out badges, guns, and power to those with violent, abusive backgrounds. Last December, LA Sheriff Alex Villanueva made the decision to rehire Caren Carl Mandoyan, an ex-cop who was previously fired in 2016 due to domestic abuse allegations against his girlfriend at the time. This month, however, the Superior Court Judge, Mitchell Beckloff, overruled this decision Talon Marks is a First Amendment publication. Editorials express the views of the Editorial Board. and made Mandoyan surrender his badge, ending his career on the force. The court’s intolerance toward keeping abusers on the force is a step in the right direction and something the country should be seeing more of in the future. However, Sheriff Villanueva’s decision to rehire Mandoyan in the first place was immoral and irresponsible to the community he has sworn to serve. It also displays poor judgement of character, which leaves the question: What other abusers have been hired to “protect” local citizens? A policeman’s duty is to keep the peace and make the community feel safe. However, current media coverage shows that a number of these officers tend to do more assaulting than protecting. of cops abusing their power, including unprovoked shootings and beatings, not-so-random pullovers, and of course the unwarranted arrests of innocent people. If a person like Mandoyan can abuse someone they claim to love, imagine then what that same person can do with power over a stranger that happens to catch them on a bad day. In general, people should always hold abusers accountable for their actions, and follow through with the proper consequences. This is a mindset that can be held through all aspects of life, especially when it comes to those who are given the power to inflict force in the name of duty. Sheriff Villanueva’s decision to rehire Mandoyan is not an isolated innocent; it is a part of a much bigger problem. Looking back at Coach Grosfeld's first year Derrick Coleman Co-Sports Editor @derrickmiracl

Edgar Mendoza

Managing Editor @edgarstevenmen1

Dean Grosfeld is now entering his second year as head coach for the Cerritos College football team, and as such he has seen both the players and the program grow and change significantly. With the recent completion of a new Kinesiology Building as well as a state of the art training facility, Grosfeld states that the falcons were able to "press reboot" and find themselves in a fresh and new environment. In regards to the new building and gym, Grosfeld said ,"We got all these new buildings, we always new facility. So it was it kind of happened at a perfect time, you're seeing the benefits of it right now, our kids are bigger, they're stronger, more muscular, because of that incredible facility." The new facilities include a modern gym , open to all members of the team , where players can hone their skills, improve strengths, and work on weaknesses. This revamping of the services available to the program have helped to increase team morale and spirit , providing what the

coach referred to as a "fresh start." He went on to say, " I think the positive vibe is back...it got really negative for a couple of years there. So just bringing back that positive vibe is huge. The kids are excited, we've genuinely got a good group of kids. With this new season comes a host of new challenges, and Grosfeld believes his team is ready to meet them.

If we try to meet that bar on the football field, then they're going to meet that bar in the classroom. -Coach Gosfeld

He stated, "Our talent level was good last year, our talent level this year is great." Grosfeld has taken this talent and has begun cultivating his athletes into winners both on the field and in the classroom. In a sport that is so demanding, players are required to sprint across the yard lines, and between classes, which can take a toll . However, through applications of common traits in football, such as discipline, time management and athletic perseverance,

players are able to win more than trophies , they are able to win scholarships and grants. He states, " we are trying to tell them, we're doing everything we can to win a state championship. That's what we're setting the bar. If we try to meet that bar on the football field, then they're going to meet that bar in the classroom." Grosfeld views himself as a teacher first , and a coach second. His passion for the game has translated into a passion for teaching, as he says, " I mean, it's not about winning national championships, our focus is all about the kids and teaching. That's what we're doing. We're teachers at this level." Football is a team sport, and as such, a team must consist of players who love the game and their team and Grosfeld has succeeded in creating such a team. "The kids we brought in are really good kids, and they're talented," Grosfeld said," which that's, something you don't usually see at that junior college level." Grosfeld hopes that his team will continue to work together, building upon their foundation as students and athletes, in order to be as successful as possible in this coming season. The Cerritos College Men's Soccer team obtained their first win by defeating College of the Desert 2-0 on, Aug. 23. For the Falcons, this was a rematch from last season, as Cerritos lost 2-1 against the Roadrunners. Cerritos could have been down to 10 men, after sophomore goalkeeper No. 1 Jose Azpeitia fouled a roadrunner in the 18th minute, Azpeitia was given a yellow card, for a denial of an obvious goalscoring opportunity. Freshmen goalkeeper No. 0 Luis Enciso substituted Azpeitia, after the yellow card, in the first half. In the 26th minute sophomore forward No. 11 Bryan Villalobos scored the first goal. The assist came from freshman midfielder No. 19 Bryan Perez. The Falcons took a 1-0 lead and kept the lead during the first half into halftime. The Roadrunners midfielder No. 8 Jonathan Zambrano was given a yellow card for a tackle on sophomore forward No. 9 Kevin Diaz in the 30th minute. College of the Desert had two chances to get an equalizer, but couldn't find the back of the net. In the beginging of the second half a corner kick was awarded for Cerritos. Sophomore defender No. 3 Ernesto Cueva scored the second

goal, which was assisted by Villalobos and defender No. 5 Eugene Martinez. Sitting near the goal line, Cueva was able to chip the ball past a diving roadrunners goalkeeper Uriel Lopez for the goal. Defender Cueva said, "We knew we had to get the win after last season's defeat. Defensively we did great, offensively we need to improve." The Roadrunners had most of the ball possession in the second half, until their defense conceded the goal. Also they did not have any shots-on-goal throughout the game.

When questioned on the improvement of the team Artiaga said, "Offense has to improve. We didn't create enough opportunities [shots-on-goal]. Our two goals came from set pieces." Cerritos was given another yellow card by the referee, defender Martinez in the 80th minute after a late tackle on an opposing player. Head Coach Benjamin Artiaga stated, that the team had a terrible performance from the offense. "Offensive players wanted to play like superheroes. Good performance from defensive players or this game would have ended 0-0."

Freshman midfielder No. 7 Armando Ibarra, Jr. when asked on his own performance stated, "It was a tough first game for me, but hopefully I can get my first goal this season." When questioned on the improvement of the team Ibarra said, "Offense had opportunities to score, however we couldn't score more than two goals." The defending state and National Champions will play on Aug. 27 at a home game against Fullerton College at 4 p.m. After the home game, Cerritos will play the Hartnell Tournament on August 30 against Hartnell College.

A second chance for Dwight Howard Nolan Smith

Freelance Writer @talonmarks

Look up in the sky, it’s a bird, it’s a plane, its superman… or is it super bum? Dwight Howard has signed with the Los Angeles Lakers. But this isn’t your typical free agency signing, as the team holds all the cards with this deal as Howard signed a non-guarantee contract. Which means if the Lakers decide to cut ties with Howard before the Jan. 7 non guarantee contract deadline, it will come at no cost to the teams salary cap. To the majority the Lakers signing of Howard may come as a desperate move, but with Demarcus Cousin out for what may be the rest of the season due to a torn ACL, and the unwillingness from Anthony Davis to take a role as center, the Lakers were in dire need of roster depth. The Lakers did their homework before signing Howard, as the team worked both centers Joakim Noah and Marreese Speights before deciding that Howard is the right fit. But even at 33, Howard’s ability to be a dominate defender and rebounder isn’t the reason why this reporter is skeptical of the move, and why I referred to him

to as “super bum”. It’s Howard’s inability to be a mature veteran on and off the court, he should be in his 16th NBA season. In 2012 the Lakers struck gold when they acquired Howard, whom was considered to be the best defending, and pick and roll big man in the game. Aligning Dwight with the best pick and roll point guard in the game Steve Nash, and the best scorer in the game Kobe Bryant seemed like a win for the Lakers so they thought. But as soon he arrived in LA he refused to be the pick and roll player that he was in Orlando. Dwight quickly got on teammates bad side with his on and off the court antics, refusal to play in the system, taking criticism from teammates personally, to the point he lost interest in playing for the Lakers during the season, which rubbed teammates the wrong way. His soft minded, cry baby, diva like persona is what has plagued him over his career, to the point that in the last five seasons he has played on five different teams. Those issues is has led to his non guarantee contact offer by the Lakers, and during those negations why some current Laker players where there during the

process, team official and roster members made it clear to Howard that if he was not willing to take a smaller role and cooperate with the system that he would be cut imminently. The 8 time all-star has convinced the Lakers official that he indeed understands how he is viewed by teams around the league and that this could be his last shot. Howard is reportedly opened to being a different player, and accepting any role necessary to help the Lakers succeed, as he told the team he “hit rock bottom” last season. There is no doubt that Howard can be productive for the Lakers as he averaged about 16 points per game , and just a little over 10 rebounds per game in viable minutes with Charlotte and Washington. But it’s the other antics previously discussed that has this reporter doubting the move. The real question is, is Howard really “humbled” as he claims he is to take a rim protector/ rebounder in a limited roll. Or will it be more of the same with Howard, all smoke and mirrors, saying all the right things just to get another NBA contract he doesn’t deserve.

Off the field is dedicated to all things sports, in whatever form they may take. The National Football League is kicking off its 100th season with a celebration consisting of three programs; "Huddle for 100," "NFL 100 Originals" and "NFL 100 Original Towns." "Huddle for 100," a nationwide clean up initiative, encourages fans to donate 100 minutes of their time to picking up trash in their local area, in order to shape what their community will become in the next 100 years. As an incentive, posting a photo of your efforts using your favorite team's hashtag will boost their ranking against others, and will enter fans in the running for signed merchandise, NFL gear and a VIP super bowl experience. "NFL 100 Originals" is a series

of television programs featuring people from all walks of life, players and fans alike, who will tell their stories and share memories of the game's history, highlights and pivotal moments. Shows such as "Peyton's Places," featuring Peyton Manning, and "NFL 100 Greatest," will look back at key moments, plays, and games from throughout the history of the NFL that shaped how future seasons would play out. Other shows such as "NFL 100 Roundtables" and "NFL 100 Sessions" will shift their focus to the players, showcase group discussions about the state of the game, and current players meeting the idols they grew up watching. "NFL 100 Original Towns" will see the league returning to their roots, providing football grants to youth and high school teams to better support those passionate about the game. This initiative will also see the 13 original towns that began the

NFL integrated into the 2019 NFL draft. Dayton, Ohio, the site of the first-ever NFL game, will be the recipient of a brand new turf field as the NFL recognizes the loca tion upon which their league was first established. Accompanying these three main events is the inclusion of sweepstakes and raffles featuring a host of prizes. Fans had the opportunity to win season tickets for 100 years, with the ability to pass these tickets down throughout future generations. Other prizes included workout sessions with NFL stars and meet-andgreet experiences. These programs and events will run until February 2, 2020, when the 54th Super Bowl is played at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami, Florida. The 100th season of the NFL will commence on Sept. 5, with the NFL kickoff game, featuring the Chicago Bears hosting the Green Bay Packers.

Cerritos College Women’s Volleyball prepared for the season with a six-week summer class. The volleyball team met four times a week for training. It was a bulk of their pre-season training before their first match. According to Coach Kari Hemmerling, “For this scrimmage, we learned a lot about our team.” Hemmerling stated, "When we play against other teams, they kind of expose things that our team obviously is not familiar with." Hemmerling said, "Expectation was just to get a lot of good touches, and see kind of how they think on their feet and different circumstances." The women's volleyball team has seven returns and 8 newcomers. They now have a total of 15 players on the team. Hemmerling said, "My strategy is very vague and my biggest thing is to train the girls to be volleyball players; we do not teach them one position." "Alexia Torres, she played middle for us last year, but she is just a a really good Volleyball player and minddles that roles limited," she explained. "Mirka Grenoble is our center. She can pass, she can play defense and can hit a high ball. She played the outside last year." Tor-

res and Grenoble played togher and in club in high school. They have a pretty good connection said Hemmerling. "As prepared as you can be, I think for the first we pretty much have got one week of school on our belt. And then we had our little scrimmage week one and, you know, you don't have much time. "But you know, the volleyball we're playing on Wednesday is not going to be nearly as good as it's going to be in a month and a half from now. So that's just our goal." Hemmerling said, "She doesn't want her players playing their best volleyball in the first game of the season." "I would be concerned if they were so but it's just slow build up. We know. And as long as we're getting a little bit better every single day, I'm good with that. "Knowing that we have a lot of room for improvement as long as they play hard and give their best effort. "I don't care what happens because typically that goes a long way typically end up on top. "So you know, we'll see what happens. But hopefully we get the victory," stated Hemmerling. "I think we'll have a good good season. We have pretty solid base foundation." The team shows good potential, and all girls are on the same page. The season is going to be a fun one to watch and follow.
