BALES OF KNOWLEDGE

On April 1, Alabama Public Television (APT) announced the winners of its 2018 APT Young Writers Contest, open to children from kindergarten through third grade throughout the state. Among the 12 contest winners were James Adams, a kindergarten student at Jacob’s Ladder, and Carmyn Thomas, a third-grader at Stephens Elementary School, both of whom were awarded third place at their grade level for their stories. Adams’ story, “The Goat and the Pig,” featured a goat who saw a video on his computer of a pig dancing while wearing a costume, then went and purchased a pig costume and danced with the pig from the video. Thomas’ story, “Kangaroo the Helpful Dog,” was about a dog who learns to become a service dog in order to help a blind woman. “His story started because we were talking about habitats, and he was looking at the desert,” Jacob’s Ladder kindergarten teacher Dorothy Hunt said. “James likes to be silly.” Adams admitted he was proud to have written the story and to have been

A proposal from Ed Collari at the Alexander City Chamber of Commerce to explore the possibility of putting a decorative fence around Strand Park is on the agenda for Monday’s meeting of the Alexander City City Council. The park plays host to several public events and Collari said that the idea came up during a Leadership Lake Martin class and while they weren’t able to get it done, they want to see if it may be possible now. “We had originally explored doing one along Tallapoosa Street, much with the same design as what we have Broad Street,” Collari said. “It would be the wrought iron look with the brick supports. The other thing that we talked about was some kind of name recognition. I talk to people who aren’t from here about events we have there and they aren’t sure where Strand Park is. The idea would be to have a decorative sign with possibly brick pillars.” The other issue, according to Collari, is safety. He said with kids at events, there is always that danger of one darting onto the busy street. It would also provide crossings at designated places where there would be less danger to pedestrians, Collari said. See COUNCIL • Page 10
