From the Editor’s Desk

I

recently learned that the Lake Martin Living Art & Photography contest was conceptualized years ago and as a result, has transformed over time. Looking back at past issues of the magazine, in its earliest time, there was a photography contest back when pages were still printed in black and white.

When Buddy King was co-owner and publisher of Lake Martin Living, he started an art contest to mimic a Highlands, North Carolina, magazine he had grown to admire, The Laurel. As a way to promote local artists that didn’t have an outlet in the early 2000s and a way to capture local scenes of wildlife, landscapes and landmarks, King initiated the Lake Martin Living Art Contest, and the winner was featured on the magazine’s cover.

Eventually, art and photography categories merged to become one contest, and we hope to see even more media included in the future.

This year, we brainstormed something new and launched the inaugural Lake Martin Living Art Walk. Sponsored by Main Street Alexander City, the art walk was a one-day event at which all contest submissions were exhibited on Main Street and at selected downtown stores in Alexander City. Additional merchants doubled as voting locations, so attendees could place votes for their favorite pieces for the People’s Choice Award.

We want to thank everyone who played a role in this event, and we appreciate our local businesses and local artists that submitted their beautiful works, as well as community members that came out to support it all. Also, we owe a big thank you to the Alexander City Board of Education, Main Street, Alexander City Chamber of Commerce and United Way for display assistance.

While attendance was hard to track with widespread participation, we estimated more than 200 people came through downtown to explore the exhibits and shop local. Lake Martin Area United Away offered its conference room for the awards reception, and around 50 people enjoyed refreshments and door prizes donated by downtown restaurant owners and merchants. Turn to page 20, to see the winning pieces in art and photography and learn more about the creative input that judges Ralph Frohsin and Kenneth Boone made with their respective selections.

The following pages feature at least one entry from each artist that submitted work in this year’s contest, which was a total of 35 artists and 69 submissions.

Events take time and energy and a lot of planning – and then, some more planning. In the end, we are happy for a successful inaugural art walk and are already racking our brains to tweak and update for next year.

We love seeing the talent in this community and hope to see even more as time progresses. Break out those brushes and cameras and get to work! Only 11 more months until next year’s deadline …

Area Habitat for Humanity held a groundbreaking for its next home project. An Alexander City family chosen by the organization will be fortunate enough to live on the shady corner lot.

Habitat homes are built completely by volunteers, including the chosen family, to help change the lives of local families that need better housing.

The homes are typically built from the same footprint as a three-bedroom, twobathroom house.

Habitat for Humanity, which is a Lake Martin Area United Way agency, builds a house about every 16 months, and president Larry Bates said the 96 Scott Rd. home should be complete within about a year if all goes well. Footings have been poured, and it is almost time for the block work to begin at the house.

Families must meet certain requirements to qualify for a Habitat home, including an income level falling between 25 and 60 percent of the local median income; being willing to partner with Habitat to build the home; and having the ability to pay a mortgage and have a reasonable credit history.

Now that work is under way at the home, Bates said, the organization is looking for volunteers.

Alabama the Beaut Photographer celebrates state's bicentennial with 200 captivating images STORY BY AMY PASSARETTI & PHOTOS BY JOHN DERSHAM

wo hundred images captured by photographer John Dersham symbolically celebrate Alabama’s Bicentennial with scenery, history, culture and elements that make the state unique.

Dersham’s book, My Alabama: John Dersham Photographs a State, was developed as a way to celebrate Alabama’s Bicentennial and promote tourism and economic development in the state by showcasing the beautiful nuances and variances of topography, flora and fauna throughout its 67 counties.

The Adelia M. Russell Library in Alexander City will host Dersham on Oct. 21 at 2 p.m. with a presentation of his book, and he will have copies available for sale.

“We are excited to have him share some award-winning Alabama photography with the community as we all continue to celebrate Alabama’s Bicentennial,” said Amy Huff, library director.

While not every county is included in the book and others appear multiple times, the mission was to capture images that 10 Lake Martin Living

represent the state as a whole through picturesque landscapes, grand vistas, flowing waterways, lush farms, abandoned buildings, main streets of small towns, old barns, native wildlife and the occasional city skyline.

“I submitted a manuscript early on, and we couldn’t figure out how to pull it together. It didn’t make sense to do it by county because certain areas are going to have the same-looking views,” said Dersham.

The volume is categorized by season, with fewer photos depicting extreme winter scenes or vivid fall colors. Tallapoosa County is represented among three of the wintertime photos, including a winter snowy road in Dadeville; the observation platform at Horseshoe Bend National Military Park; and a peaceful bend in the Tallapoosa River near New Site. Other local images include Cahaba lilies and nature shots of Coosa County.

neighboring Elmore County include a spring photo of the Coosa River and a shot of Spectre in Millbrook, the setting for the film Big Fish.

“Some of my favorite shots were not included, but we had to make it more about ensuring the book made sense,” said Dersham.

Being a resident of DeKalb County, it’s understandable that an increasing number of photos from this area were available from which to choose, as Dersham said he naturally has taken more photos in his hometown.

“We ended up with about 50,000 images and formed several panels to help me cull it down. It was mainly based on the quality of images and where the photo was located,” he said. “In the end, the publishers did it based on what they felt was needed to round out the book.”

Using a variety of film and digital formats, Dersham traveled around the state locating the subjects. Most of his photos are from 2015 on, which is when he signed the contract for the

The lighting, perspective, angle and details of each photo are testament to Dersham’s flair for illustrating the beauty of Alabama.

“I like to arrive to my subject before daylight and wait for the best light as the sun rises. There is sunrise, fog, dew, mist, frost, wet roads – interesting elements you don’t get at sunset,” said Dersham.

His favorite things to photograph are old buildings and landscapes. The book intentionally does not feature many people, but Dersham said he also enjoys photographing human subjects.

“The reason for this book emanates from tourism, and the bicentennial committee had to approve it to use the logo as part of its official celebration,” said Dersham. “In tourism, we’re really popular as a state, but there’s a significant misunderstanding about what Alabama actually looks like.”

Dersham, who operates a visitor’s center at Lookout Mountain, is very familiar with promoting tourism and hopes people will use this book as a tool to recruit potential economic developers from out of state.

Alabama native Bo Jackson wrote the forward of the book, aligning his memories of growing up in Alabama to the chosen scenes in My Alabama. He also compares his view of the same sights, terrain and wonders as seen through Dersham’s lens to his scenery during his Bo Bikes Bama charity fundraiser, which has given him an up-close look at the state’s natural wonders.

Prioritize this fall's gardening chores

f all the seasons, fall ranks next to spring as my favorite time of the year. Being a naturalist at heart, I love spending time outdoors, whether enjoying the scenery or just working in the yard. The inspiring cooler weather motivates me get up and tackle those outdoor chores and projects that I’ve put off all summer.

There is always something that needs to be done around homes and gardens, but the autumn season has its own priorities. Here are some gardening maintenance chores to do and not do this fall.

Do mow the lawn one or two more times in early fall. In fact, this is a very good time to bag those grass clippings.

Mowing while bagging is sort of like vacuuming the lawn; it sucks up Shane Harris unwanted weed seeds, picks up any small debris or trash and leaves the lawn nice and neat. Doing so might help control some of the unwanted weeds next year.

In Alabama, spring flowering bulbs can be planted from late October through late December in most areas. Always buy bulbs from a reputable dealer. Avoid bulbs that are soft, look molded or are discolored. Select large, firm bulbs without blemishes or rotten spots and store them in a cold, dry place until planting time. If bulbs cannot be planted right away, store them at around 60 to 65 degrees before planting. Temperatures above 70 degrees may damage the flower bulbs.

Do replenish the mulch around plants. A fresh new layer of mulch needs to be added around plants almost every year, but no more than 3 inches is best. Mulch helps hold in moisture; keeps the plants warm in the winter and cooler in the summer; suppresses weeds; and gives the landscape a more attractive and formal appearance.

The leaves and pine straw that are falling in the yard make great mulch instead of having to buy it. This method provides homeowners with free mulch and reduces the need for purchasing it, which can be very expensive.

Do take a soil test. Fall To-do List

Later, remove the bagger and mulch, and chop those fallen leaves back into the lawn. The leaves can be raked or bagged, but mulching them directly back into the lawn is very beneficial.

Mowing breaks up shredded grass clippings, leaves and even pine needles for faster decomposition. Although not very appealing at first, it requires no raking or collection, and the nutrients and organic matter are returned directly to the soil. That’s a lot of time saved.

Do purchase and plant spring-flowering bulbs like daffodils, narcissus, lilies, crocuses and hyacinths. Include iris, too, although it isn’t a bulb. Planted in the fall, most of these bloom the following spring, well 14 Lake Martin Living

is a good time to apply lime if a lawn, orchard or garden needs it. It will have plenty of time to soak in and take effect by spring.

Instead of guessing, refer to a soil test to determine the soil’s pH and appropriate lime and fertilizer recommendations. Many crop failures are a direct result of improper soil pH and wrong fertilizer applications. A $7 soil test is such a small investment compared to all other expenses.

Do plant winter annuals, shrubs and trees. Fall is a perfect time to plant these things. Many winter annuals – such as pansies – are now available and can be placed in containers and flowers beds. They will provide much needed color during most of the winter.

Fall also is the ideal time to add new trees and shrubs to home landscapes. Planting trees in the fall gives plants more time to get their roots fully established before the spring growing season arrives. This is critical for surviving the hot, dry summers of Alabama. Droughts – such as this year – devastate spring-planted shrubs and trees.

Planted four to six months earlier might have meant survival rather than death. Be sure to water all new plants, as needed, to ensure survival.

Do start a compost pile. Why not grow soil at home? Collected leaves, grass clipping and other small shredded plant material are best recycled in a compost pile. Through composting, yard and garden waste, plant materials, paper and even some food products can be recycled into an excellent soil conditioner. Once broken down, the composted plant materials become a darkcolored, crumbly, soil-like product called humus, which is an ideal soil medium for plants and vegetables because it improves soil structure, drainage and fertility. Composting speeds the breakdown of the plant materials; and therefore, reduces the total volume of the yard and garden

waste.

When making out a to-do list, keep in mind some yard work tasks are not necessary.

Do not fertilize the lawn in the fall. Despite all the TV ads reminding homeowners to winterize their lawns in the fall, this is nonsense for Alabama turfgrasses. Winterizing only applies to areas north of Alabama that are able to grow cool season lawns – such as fescue, Kentucky bluegrass, bentgrass and ryegrass. Lawns in East Central Alabama do not grow in the winter but go dormant in the fall. There is absolutely no advantage to fertilizing lawns in the fall.

Doing so only makes lawns vulnerable to getting killed by the first frost or freeze. It is a total waste of fertilizer – it will just fertilize those winter lawn weeds.

Do not burn or throw away those raked up leaves and pine straw. Yard debris is very valuable and is a great source for organic matter or mulch.

Plus, it’s free. Place those leaves in a compost pile; scatter them out to create natural areas; put them in a vegetable garden; or use them as mulch. Why haul it off, burn it or put it out with the garbage when it can be used to improve garden soil and help plants? Plants that get pruned in the fall may respond by putting on a new flush of growth. This new tender growth is more susceptible to getting damaged during a frost or freezing weather. Although the plant may not be entirely killed, there is a possibility portions could be scarred or killed. Most plants should be pruned in January and February or after they have finished blooming in the spring. (Note: Tree and small fruits are pruned each winter after January).

Enjoy the fall season, get motivated and get outdoors. There is a lot to do.

Ladies, we’re tickled pink Lisa Mills to invite you to Russell Medical’s 16th Annual Breast Cancer Awareness Luncheon, Thursday, Oct. 24, from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Betty Carol Graham Technology Center. The event is back at CACC, and guests are in for quite a cackle as they welcome motivational humorist Lisa Mills to the stage.

Mills is an award-winning, 100-percent-clean comedian, motivational speaker and author. Denney captures trio of awards at Lake Martin Living Art Walk

ore than 200 people strolled the streets, sidewalks and businesses in downtown Alexander City Oct. 5 for the inaugural Lake Martin Living Art Walk.

Guests indulged in the talented works of 69 submitted pieces of art and photography. Lake Martin Pizza Company, Coffee Corner on Main, Emporium Wine, Fermenter’s on the Green and Ocie & Belle’s all acted as art exhibit locations. While viewing artwork on the street, guests enjoyed music by Tom Gassaway and Sylacauga’s Rocky Lucas and watched artist John Denney’s paint live on Main Street.

Seven opportunities were available for prize money, but some artists lucked out with multiple awards. In the art portion of the contest, Dawn Thornton earned first place for her dynamic painting of fish.

Thornton said she created the colorful piece of artwork with acrylic paint, Rain-X and WD-40.

“I just play around,” she said.

Ralph Frohsin judged the art submissions and said Thornton’s piece just jumped out at him.

“I chose it for the composition and the unique color,” Frohsin said. “The color was the first thing that grabbed my attention.”

Second place in the art category was awarded to Denney for his intricately detailed Barn Owl painting. Frohsin said he was impressed by how realistic the owl appeared.

Third place in art was awarded to Annie Bartol for her vibrant So Fly Me painting of fish flies. The color of Bartol’s work also intrigued Frohsin.

“They were all good,” Frohsin said. “I commend all of them and appreciate their talents and putting in the effort of not only the painting 20 Lake Martin Living

but the framing and presentation. It’ll be interesting to see how the public votes on People’s Choice.”

Guests did have that special chance to choose their favorites by casting votes at participating stores. People’s Choice voters were asked to give a donation of their choice, along with their votes, to benefit Alexander City Theatre II’s building campaign.

Bartol’s So Fly Me also was awarded the People’s Choice winner.

Photographer Kenneth Boone, who said he used a basic method when judging, selected the winning photography in the contest.

“I used a very simple, tried-andtrue criteria to judge the winners,” Boone said. “‘What image would I want on my wall for the next 10 years?’

“A number of strong images were submitted to the Lake Martin Living Art Contest this year. Eleven made my second cut, nine my third and six my fourth cut before I narrowed it down to three images. I’d be proud to have any of these three photographs in my home permanently.”

Ambrose Canoe by Denney was awarded first place.

“The simplicity of the composition, the lack of any distraction at all, combined with strong colors of the boat itself and the near black-and-white quality of the rest of the image make this the winner,” Boone said. “It evokes peace, serenity and a true sense of the lake.

“There’s lots to capture the eye in this image,” Boone said, “The contrast in texture between the smooth water, the rounded iron of the Robinson Iron fountain base and the highly textured foundation provide great contrast. The photographer chose to give us only a small piece of this fountain, which helps make this image almost abstract, except for the recognizable shapes of brilliantly colored fall leaves.”

Third place was awarded to Denney for his Elkahatchee Bridge Sunrise image, which Boone described as a beautiful scene of Lake Martin.

“The quality of light that the photographer captured makes this image sing,” Boone said. “Golden sunlight shining through the trees, hitting the water’s surface and Art on Display Art Walk attendees peruse bouncing up to illuminate the underside of the bridge in contest submissions on Main Street.

More than 50 people attended the awards reception that kicked off just after the art walk concluded. Artwork was collected from exhibit locations and on display in the Lake Martin Area United Way conference room. There, attendees also enjoyed food and refreshments that were donated by downtown merchants.

Emporium Wine provided complimentary wine while Carlisle’s, Lake Martin Pizza, Coffee Corner and Carib Kitchen served up hors d’oeuvres.

Lake Martin Living editor Amy Passaretti thanked the crowd for being part of the event, and Main Street Alexander City executive director Stacey Jeffcoat presented the winners with ribbons and prizes.

Everything's Art calls for entries in student competition

Everything’s Art will host its Second Annual Student Art Competition for all students in grades kindergarten through 12th that live within the jurisdiction of the Tallapoosa County Board of Education, including home-schooled and special education students and those actively working toward their GEDs. A total of $1,000 in prizes will be awarded to the top finalists, as well as an overall Best of Show. There will be a raffle and select students who enter the contest also could win art kits.

Finalists’ work will be on display from Jan. 17, 2020, to Jan. 31, 2020, at Raining Dogs Gallery on the Courthouse Square in Dadeville.

Recognition and Evaluation of Autism Contact Training will provide attendees with the necessary tools to increase safety for both first responders and people with autism or autism spectrum condition. Lake Marin Resource Association, Alabama Power Company, Russell Lands On Lake Martin, Advanced Disposal, Wind Creek State Park, Lake Martin Dock Company and TowBoatU.S. Lake Martin will once again join forces to coordinate the annual cleanup of the 38 Lake Martin Living

Lake Martin community. This year’s efforts will focus on the lake’s shorelines and surrounding roadways. Volunteers are encouraged to work independently and deliver bagged trash to Kowaliga Public Ramp, Wind Creek State Park Marina, Union Public Boat Ramp and Real Island Marina. Supplies will be available for volunteers, along with a custom-designer T-shirt featuring artwork from a Stephens Elementary student. Supplies can be picked up starting at 8 a.m. on each day from any of the participating dumpster locations.
