L

ake Martin is one of life’s rare in-themoment living spaces.

It is so easy here to just sit back and appreciate life unfolding in front of us. The mesmerizingly blue skies and even bluer water seem to chase away worries and replace them with smiles.

This issue of Lake magazine is filled with in-the-moment snapshots.

From the story about John and Katy Shelton’s North Ridge retirement home for the not-yet retired on page 48, to fishing pro Greg Vinson’s bright-sideof-the-boat-traffic article on page 68, Lake Martin is more about presence than anything else.

I think that’s why the Lake Scenes, starting on page 10, are the first thing many Lake readers turn to when they pick up the magazine at their favorite Lake Martin businesses.

The photos on these page celebrate the pure pleasure of a moment – a snapshot of the magic that happens at the lake with family and friends.

And there’s plenty of magic every month at Lake Martin.

Sandra Fuller at Tallapoosa County Tourism and her songwriter festival team certainly made the magic happen at the area’s first-ever Lake Martin Songwriters Festival. The event featured 17 musicians performing in 10 venues across Lake Martin the weekend of Aug. 18 through 21. Check out the story and photos on page 26 and be looking for an announcement about the festival dates for next year.

Southern Regional slalom champion Payton Miller certainly lives in the moment every time he takes to the water. He recently competed at the national level and finished in the top five. Turn to page 34 for our conversation with Payton as he recognizes the influence skiing at Lake Martin has had on his life.

Though life at the lake focuses on the present, we’re always looking forward to what’s next on the schedule. This month, it’s the annual Labor Day concert at Lake Martin Amphitheater. The Vegabonds will headline this year’s concert for the first time, and on page 20 they look at the journey they’ve taken to get here.

Boats will come out of the water this month, and lake houses will close up for the winter, but already, Lake Martin is planning for next season. At Russell Lands, construction is under way for the Fanny Goldmine Diner, a fast-casual venue with a family-friendly price tag. Turn to page 42 for a preview of the diner that will open late next spring/early summer at Russell Crossroads and will offer another lake area venue where present moments happen.

Art and photography entries now being accepted Our sister magazine, Lake Martin Living, is now accepting submissions for the 2021 art and photography contest celebrating the local lifestyle. Every artist will be featured inside the October issue of Lake Martin Living, and one of the first place winners will be featured on the cover.

Second place will win $150, and third place winners will take home $100. The People’s Choice award also will win $100.

Entries must reflect the local area or its lifestyle and must be ready to hang. Each entry should be labeled with the artist’s name and contact information. Entry fee is $15

per entry and includes a ticket to the show and a vote for the People’s Choice award, as well as eligibility for door prizes. Previous entries in the Lake Martin Living Art & Photography contest will not be accepted.

Deliver artwork to the TPI office at 548 Cherokee Rd., Alexander City, between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. Entry deadline is 5 p.m. on Sept. 24.

Tickets for the art show event, which will feature live entertainment, are $5 and are available at TPI during normal business hours. Ticketholders are encouraged to pick up dinner at a downtown restaurant and enjoy the live entertainment during the art show.

Wellborn Musclecar Museum

Housed in a restored vintage auto dealership in downtown Alexander City, the Wellborn Musclecar Museum collection of great American automobiles of the 1960s and 1970s is open for public viewing Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. This exemplary collection includes the famed K&K Dodge, the 1970 Grand National Champion, as well as Aero cars designed for NASCAR. You will see an example of each manufacturer’s highest horsepower cars of 1970, from Dodge, Plymouth, Chevrolet, Buick, Porsche and Oldsmobile. The inventory on display changes frequently, so every visit includes something new and exciting.

Admission for adults is $11; children ages 7 to 17 admitted for $7, and children ages 6 and under are admitted for free.

First Saturday Markets

Standard Deluxe in Waverly hosts the First Saturday Market on the first Saturday of each month from now through August. Pick up lunch, local artwork, T-shirts, posters and more from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Visit standarddeluxe. com for details.

Volunteers in Alexander City and Dadeville are encouraged to participate in community partnership cleanups every month.

In Alexander City, the cleanups are held on the third Saturday of the month. Meet at Ourtown Volunteer Fire Department at 8:30 a.m. to pick up supplies and area assignments and help clean up the roads within Alexander City. For more information, contact John Thompson at 334399-3289.

In Dadeville, the monthly cleanup is held on the first Saturday of the month, and volunteers can pick up sanitized pickers and bags at 8 a.m. at Dadeville City Hall. There also will be a trash bag drop-off on site. Contact Dianna Porter at 256-750-0075.

Anyone interested in art, crafts and hobbies is encouraged to come to and participate in the weekly activities through Sept. 27 to learn from each other and make new friends with others who share the same interests. Charity Bingo

Every Tuesday in September, stop in at Niffer’s at the Lake at 6 p.m. for eight rounds of Bingo to benefit the Lake Martin Area United Way. Cards are $1 each. The first seven rounds pay Niffer’s dollars, but the last round pays a cash jackpot.

Soup to Go

Drive through the parking lot at St. James Episcopal Church at 347 S. Central Ave. between 5:30 p.m. and 6 p.m. every Tuesday and pick up a free brown bag dinner with soup, sandwich and more. COVID-19 precautions are taken by volunteers who prepare, pack and distribute the meal, which is open to the whole community.

Music at Copper’s Grill

Copper’s Grill hosts music outdoors on the lawn at 7:30 p.m. every Friday. Bring your own lawn chairs and please keep a proper social distance.

Episcopal Church Services at the Lake

Clean Community Partnership Cleanups

Storytime for children aged 5 and younger is held at the Dadeville Public Library every Tuesday at 10 a.m.

Children’s Library in Alexander City

Charity Bingo at Jake’s

Located on state Route 63 just south of Lake Martin Amphitheater, the Children’s Harbor Thrift Store is open Thursday through Saturday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. You never know what gems you might find – from clothes and household items to boats. Proceeds are used to help fund the activities at the Lake Martin campus of Children’s Harbor and the Family Center at Children’s Hospital. Call 334-8572008 for more information.

Memory Makers Quilt Guild

This group meets the second and fourth Mondays at the Senior Center on the Charles E. Bailey Sportplex campus.

Participants come and go between 1 p.m. and 8 p.m. with a business meeting at 5 p.m., followed by show-and-tell. Bring sewing projects, machines and questions.

Real Island Supper

The Real Island community hosts a covered dish supper every third Friday of the month at the Real Island Volunteer Fire Department and Community Room, 1495 Real Island Rd., Equality. There is never a dull moment with this wildlife biologist as she educates on the beauty of nature in the wild and the outdoor classroom.

Lake Martin News Golf tournament raises $30,000 for Girls Ranch

Two injured in Lake Martin boat crash

Lake Martin Realty hosted the golf fundraiser to benefit the Tallapoosa County Girls Ranch

Russell Lands’ Steve Arnberg called the second annual Lake Martin Realty Charity Golf Tournament a huge success and not just because of the money raised.

“We are all winners today because we are helping support something worthwhile,” Arnberg said of last month’s tournament. “We thought we blessed them last year, but they blessed us.”

Last year’s golf fundraiser raised $15,000 the day of the tournament. This year, $30,000 was raised, but there is more coming.

“There are two checks – one today and another next week,” Arnberg said. “Last year, the secondary check was like $3,000.”

The secondary check comes from fundraising the day of the tournament through purchases of raffle tickets, mulligans and more.

Arnberg said Friday’s success should not stop the support of the Girls Ranch.

“You’ve been very generous. You bought teams, but you gave above and beyond,” Arnberg said. “This organization is going to have needs beyond today, so please make a note of this organization.”

Arnberg said he had heard about the Girls Ranch for years but became more aware of what it does leading up to last year’s tournament.

“Getting involved with this golf tournament gave me a chance to get acquainted with the Girls Ranch,” Arnberg said. “This organization is very transparent. They are trying to provide a great opportunity for young people in the state who may not be in the best place to be. This gives them a great place to be where they are loved, nurtured and continue to grow and get a good start in life.”

Troopers with the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency’s Marine Patrol Division are investigating a boat crash that occurred the evening of Saturday, July 24.

ALEA Marine Patrol troopers responded to a call that a 21-foot Supra Sunsport ski boat had struck a pier at Kowaliga Marina at about 9:05 p.m., according to a release from ALEA. There were three individuals onboard the vessel at the time of the crash.

“The operator, Mason William Goodwin, 20, of Birmingham and a passenger were both injured at the time of the crash,” the release said. “Goodwin was charged with boating under the influence and minor in possession of alcoholic beverages. A 19-year-old passenger was also charged with criminal possession of a forged instrument in the fourth-degree and minor in possession of alcoholic beverages.”

The Elmore County Sheriff’s Office and Kowaliga Volunteer Fire Department also responded to the scene and assisted.

Russell Lands has added a new dimension to Friday On The Green. Several people who operate “pop-up” shops have approached the company about doing some flash sales on the Town Green. So, on Sept. 3, a few folks plan to set up on the back side of the Town Green and show their stuff. You may find clothing styled for toddlers to grandparents and cool art and craft work.

All too soon, it’s time for the final Lake Martin Amphitheater concert of the 2021 summer season. Headlining this year’s end-of-summer blowout will be The Vegabonds. Sam Burchfield opens the Sept. 5 event at 6 p.m., followed by The Bank Walkers.

Delivering sensational performances with powerhouse guitar riffs and a DIY approach to songwriting, The Vegabonds have Lake Martin roots and can’t wait to come back to the stage at The Amp. “Lake Martin has meant a lot to our band over the years,” said Paul Bruens, the band’s bass player.

“Our guitar player, Richard Forehand, is from the area and grew up on the lake.

Ever since we started out of Auburn in 2009, we have been playing the Amphitheater, opening for other legendary musical acts. This is the first big stage that we ever got to play on. It is where we opened for Blues Traveler, Charlie Daniels, Susan Tedeschi and Sister Hazel, among other acts.”

In their early days, The Vegabonds played the college circuit across the Southeast. Their authentic sound caught on quickly with student audiences, who sang along word-for-word to their first hits, Georgia Fire and Shaky Hands.

In addition to their opener performances with Daniels, Sister Hazel and others at The Amp, The Vegabonds have opened for Lynyrd Skynyrd and the late Gregg Allman and have played the Peach Festival, Sweetwater 420, Sunfest, Taste of Randolph and more.

But they are excited about returning to their roots in East Central Alabama, where they have made memories that last a lifetime, Bruens said.

“One of our favorite memories at the amphitheater was when we opened for Charlie Daniels, and he invited us to come on his tour bus after the show. He signed autographs for us, took pictures with us, and gave us inspiration to keep doing what we do. That eventually led to us headlining the stage on our own,” he said. “We can’t wait to get in town and spend the afternoon hanging on the lake, riding around in a pontoon boat.”

Sam Burchfield will take the stage at this year’s Labor Day concert to kick off the night at 6 p.m. as lakelovers bid farewell to the summer season at the lake. Based in Athens, Georgia, Burchfield developed his guitar style as a youth and added soft and sultry vocals as he got older.

He’s played a variety of venues around the South and has developed a following that’s likely to continue to grow.

Local favorite, The Bank Walkers, will join the mix at 7:30 p.m. Playing classic rock, Southern, gospel and country, the band’s performances are personal, casual and entertaining. Lake Martin audiences have learned: If The Bank Walkers are playing, it’s going to be a fun night.

We’ve raised our children there – primarily on weekends – and now our seven grandchildren (ages 13, 9, 5, 4, 3, 1 and 0). Our weekly residence is in the Old Cloverdale neighborhood of Montgomery.

Recently, we spent a week in California, a part of which was at Big Bear Lake in the Bernardino Mountain range.

While out in a boat, we saw and photographed a floating potty, accessible and amendable to anyone in any vessel.

We thought a picture of this, and the suggestion of its potential, especially in parts where people camp out, would be an interesting topic.

The next big music artist might have played at Lake Martin last month when the inaugural Lake Martin Songwriters Festival welcomed 17 artists to 10 venues in a five-day event.

Tallapoosa County Tourism put together the inaugural festival that featured artists at lake area hangouts from Aug. 17 to Aug. 21.

During the festival, the songwriters paid a visit to the Hank Williams Cabin at Kowaliga.

“That was amazing,” said songwriter Emma Zinck.

“What a way to get a bunch of Nashville songwriters to geek out.”

Something all of the songwriters showed was entertainment value.

“Oh, they really like the stories. Then you realize sometimes they like the story better than the song. If you tell a good enough story, they will like the song even though it might not be great,” said Lee Tucker, who met Wilson at a retreat at the lake.

Zinck said she simply likes the family she has found in her five or so years in Nashville.

“It is like a community,” Zinck said. “We all work together, write songs together. It’s really fun.”

Wilson gives all the credit for the festival success to Tallapoosa County Tourism Director Sandra Fuller.

“It came together better than I could have dreamed,” Wilson said.

Plans already are under way for next year᾿s event, which may be moved up on the calendar, said Fuller.

“We want the Lake MartinSongwriter Festival to be the last hurrah of the summer, so we will do it when schools and colleges have not started back,” Fuller said.

“We want to increase the number of songwriters, up to 20 maybe, and increase the number of venues but not with everyone playing at the same time - finding other events during the day where the songwriters can play.”

Twelve hundred ducks floated Lake Martin last month in the fourth annual Duck Norris race at Chuck’s Marina to raise money and awareness for two local charities, said Candice Gulley, executive director at the Tallapoosa County Sheriffs Girls Ranch.

Brandy Blaylok won $2,500 when her plastic duck numbered 187 was plucked from the head of the finish line at this year’s race, which benefits the Girls Ranch and the Tri-County Children’s Advocacy Center. Stephen Smith won second place, and Josh Waller’s duck came in third. The ducks, 4-inch plastic yellow, pink and blue floaters, took a little more than five minutes to travel about 30 feet along the shoreline and into a chute that narrowed the flow to determine a winner.

“They go faster if there is boat traffic. The wakes push them along a little,” explained advocacy center director Jaci Burgess.

This year’s race raised $5,014 for the charities, which work together to support the ranch’s mission in providing a stable home life for neglected and abused young girls. The race has raised nearly $23,000 over four years.

The event was held at 10 a.m. on Aug. 7 just off the dock at Chuck’s, one of the lake’s most popular venues in Blue Creek. Title sponsors of this year’s event were S&S Tire Pros and Glynn Smith Chevrolet.

Next year’s Duck Norris race will take place on July 30th.

The sport helped him become the person he is today, Miller added, as he learned to perform at his best in pressure situations, work hard to achieve his goals and gain confidence.

“When you compete in an individual sport, you compete against yourself every day,” he explained.

“There were not a lot of people in my group around Lake Martin at the level I was. I only see them at

The school record awards from Auburn are especially important to him, Miller said, because the record stood for a while before he broke it.

“To be able to break it twice is pretty cool and shows how much hard work pays off,” he said.

Miller left the Auburn team to ski three years at Alabama, which had been a top-three program for several decades with a long streak of consecutively winning conference tournaments and regional titles.

“This year, Alabama has the best chance of winning its first team national championship, and to know I was a part in helping recruit some of those skiers is pretty cool, knowing we were part of the turn in the program taking the next step to get out of the top three and make it to the top. Being able to be one of the top skiers for Alabama for three years is something that I’m most proud of.”

In addition to continuing to ski competitively, Miller is on the sales team at Russell Marine and is sponsored by Russell Marine and HO. “Skiing has helped me in this job because I know about the boats. I sell Nautiques, which are the best ski boat out there, and being able to ski and go to tournaments with a company boat, representing them – that’s something not everybody gets to do,” he added.

While Miller is not employed in his field of study – human performance and exercise science – the 26-year-old said his college studies had an impact on him through the tournament circuit, and the things he learned there continue to help him.

“I took a class in the psychology of coaching, and the instructor was a PGA golf coach. He said you can’t control everything about a situation. All you can control is your mind. If you practice, that’s in your mind. And if you treat competition runs like they are a practice, then it’s there. That was one of the biggest things that helped me in competition,” he said.

Skiing Lake Martin, he said, is a challenge because the conditions often are rough.

“At Lake Martin, the conditions aren’t the best, but then it’s an easy adjustment when I compete at other lakes,” he said. “It’s hard at times because after almost every weekend during the summer, we have to replace buoys. My parents keep the course up and continue to replace the buoys every week.”

Miller said he is glad to see skiing making a comeback at the lake.

“I’m glad to see more people getting involved in the sport. I want it to grow – especially on Lake Martin. It is more challenging than wakeboarding, and the hardest part is trying to learn. It takes a ton of commitment and a ton of time,” he said. “I’d like to see a big crowd at tournaments here on Lake Martin.

I’d love to have that slough filled up with people watching a tournament.

“It used to be that skiing was on ESPN in the 1990s. It was a big sport, and it is trending upward again. I’m glad I can be a part of that.”

Fanny Goldmine

W

hen lake lovers return to Lake Martin next spring, Fanny Goldmine Diner at Russell Crossroads will be an addition that raises the ante on options for local fun.

Ground broke last month on the new breakfast, lunch and dinner restaurant that is expected to open in early summer 2022.

The diner’s interior décor and other details are still in the planning stages but will provide an engaging atmosphere for diners, said Chef Chris Doggett, corporate director of food and beverage for Russell Lands.

“It was Ben Russell’s idea. He brought it

up when he came back from a trip to Maine,” Doggett said. “The new restaurant will be family friendly, budget friendly and will serve a traditional menu of fast-casual diner food – burgers, wings, chicken fingers, salads and more.”

Restaurant guests will order food at a walkup counter and take a number. The food will be brought to the table, Doggett said.

“We anticipate an especially big business for breakfast. Right now, we are thinking Fanny Goldmine Diner will be open six days a week for breakfast and lunch with dinner three or four days,” he said.

from state Route 63, the diner will accommodate 68 guests inside with additional seating on a patio and in an open courtyard.

The inspiration for the diner’s folksy name was a 1957 story from The Alabama Review.

The story was retold in Peggy Jackson Walls’ book of local gold mining history, Alabama Gold, published by The History Press in 2016.

Walls wrote that the widow of a Native American was told she had to have an English name before she could register her land in Tallapoosa County. “Fanny” was a popular name among the local settlers, and the widow had seen and liked the gold and mines at Blue

Hill. Even though there was no gold mine on the property, she registered the land under the name of Fanny Goldmine.

“We expect to open in May or June of next year, contingent, of course, on construction, as material costs are high right now and the supply chain is still slow. But it’s coming, and we’re excited about that,” Doggett said.

You may not have seen an Eastern Narrowmouth Toad before, but you’ve definitely heard it.

Around Lake Martin, the natural sounds of summer are more listened-to than anything on the Billboard chart, and every year, a couple of hit-makers top our list for at least part of the season: the whine of cicadas during the day and the whine of Narrowmouth Toads during the night.

If you live near the water – Lake Martin, a pond or even a roadside ditch – you have heard the loud, high-pitched, nasal

“waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah” of amorous Narrowmouth Toads looking for love. Each call can last up to four seconds. It’s also been described as a long “weeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee” or an extended lamb’s bleat or a drawn-out trill.

But if you spend much time around here, you’ve heard it.

Narrowmouth Toads are small, from 1 to 1-1/2 inches long. They have pear-shaped bodies and are very wide in the hind end and have narrowing heads with pointed snouts. These toads have smooth, lumpy skin and can be colored gray, brown, reddish or black or a blotchy

mixture of those colors. Males typically have dark throats, and females have lighter throats. The bellies of both genders are mottled. Individuals change color to match their surroundings or reflect their moods.

These diminutive toads have very long toes with no webbing – the longest toe looks like it might have inspired Steven Spielberg when he was creating ET. Narrowmouth Toads also have a distinctive fold of skin just behind their eyes. Carolinensis is a reference to South Carolina, where this toad was first discovered.

You may have never have seen a Narrowmouth Toad because it is secretive and nocturnal and hangs around in wet spots. So unless you like turning over logs at night in a swamp, you’re unlikely to bump into one; however, it is common throughout Alabama and is native across the Southeast, from Maryland to the Florida Keys to eastern Texas.

During the day, Narrowmouth Toads seek cover in moist areas beneath logs, rocks, leaf litter and loose soil. At night, these toads go hunting for ants, which are their primary prey, but other insects like small beetles or termites are also on their menu.

During the summer at night, especially after heavy rains and during times of high humidity, Narrowmouth Toads conceal themselves along the edges of ponds and in temporary water holes such as rain-filled ditches, flooded pastures and swampy areas. They have been discovered buried in wet sand, hiding under shoreline vegetation and sitting in the mouths of water-filled burrows, usually with just their snouts above water. That’s where they make their familiar calls to attract females.

Once a male finds a mate, he will climb on the

female’s back and use special glands located in his belly to secrete a glue-like substance that binds the couple together, floating in the water. The female will then deposit sheets of 10-90 eggs on the water’s surface and the male will fertilize them. This usually occurs in areas where there are lots of plants nearby, and the eggs sometimes attach to the aquatic vegetation.

Eggs in a clutch number from less than 200 to more than 1,600. The eggs hatch in 24-36 hours, and over the course of the next month or two, the tadpoles begin to grow limbs as they morph from their aquatic larval tadpole stage into toads. As tadpoles, these creatures eat mostly plankton in the water.

During winter months, Narrowmouth Toads will hunker down inside decaying logs or buried under leaf litter or spend the winter underground. Wild Narrowmouth Toads have been found to live for more than six years.

This toad’s primary predators are copperheads, water moccasins, water snakes and shorebirds. There are several factors that help them survive for years in the wild. One is the toxic mucous that is secreted onto their skin, which can be very irritating to a predator’s eyes and throat. If you handle a Narrowmouth Toad, it’s a good idea to wash your hands thoroughly afterward and don’t touch your eyes until you do. Another is this toad’s ability to hide and to both hop and run rather quickly. Toads that have been spotted by scientists have been recorded diving into crayfish chimneys to escape.

But most of the time, they’re not spotted at all.

Atlanta transplants Katy and John Shelton raised three boys with the help of a weekend lake cabin at Real Island, but when it came time to retire, the couple purchased a lot at The Ridge on Lake Martin. They chose a floor plan and hired Felix Lagasse to build a lake house that would accommodate the next phase of life – downsizing for daily living but having available space to accommodate their sons’ future families, i.e. grandchildren.

They chose a site at North Ridge with deep water, sloping topography and a beautiful view.

“When we first drove up to the lot, we thought it was too steep,” Katy Shelton explained. “Our Realtor told us to just give it a chance, so we walked down the hill to the waterfront. When we saw the view, it was a very pleasant surprise.”

The Sheltons’ view to the north takes in the expanse of beautiful blue water that stretches to Midway Island. With an east-facing orientation, the home is bathed in morning sunshine and enjoys cool shade in the afternoons.

“We’re so grateful for that afternoon shade,” Shelton said. “It allows us to use the porches all day.”

Introduced to Lake Martin by friends in their

native Birmingham, the Sheltons chose a house plan that includes 3,500 square feet of indoor living space. They do most of their living on the additional 2,500 square feet of covered porches that sweep along the entire east side of the house, opening the home to that spectacular view from every room.

With four bedrooms and four baths in the home, each of the boys has a private suite on one end of the house. Jack’s room is downstairs, across the main living space from the master. Drake’s and Sullivan’s upstairs rooms are separated by the huge game room that one day, the Sheltons hope, will be the entertainment and sleeping space for their future grandchildren.

A book editor and freelance writer in her spare time, Shelton loves to work near the water. In good weather, she takes her laptop to a ground-level screened porch off the master bedroom to write with water views. When it’s too hot or cold to be outside, she writes in the family room.

On the upstairs porch, John practices his golf swing by hitting balls into a net off middle son Drake’s bedroom. And when all three boys are home, they convert the upstairs porch into SEPTEMBER 2021

“We call it Tunes in the Slough,” Shelton explained. “Jack plays guitar; Drake plays drums; and Sullivan plays base guitar and sings . The neighbors bring chairs out onto their docks to listen, and boats gather up in the slough.”

John’s study also is upstairs, which for now, affords him a quiet, out-of-the-way place to work, take calls and exit to the porch when he wants to hit a few golf balls.

The arrangement of the bedrooms was carefully thought out, Shelton said, as it provides privacy for each of their sons’ future families by dedicating isolated suites.

“Our two oldest are engaged and will be married this year,” Shelton said.

The upstairs floor plan is a reflection of the main floor, where bedrooms are situated at opposite ends of a large living space. For now, the upstairs gaming space offers a number of entertainment options, from darts to air hockey and a stand-alone video game, as well as the television. A blue sailfish leaps across one

wall; it was caught in Costa Rica by John on his 50th birthday. A tremendous sectional sofa offers plenty of room for the growing family to lounge comfortably for video games and movies.

“That’s really how we planned the house – not grand or fancy but comfortable, practical and livable,” Shelton said.

Each of the boys’ bedrooms is decorated with muted colors that do not compete with the lake view beyond the wide windows. In each suite, Shelton has hung a son’s portrait.

“I had a portrait done of each of the boys when they were young, and those hang in each of their rooms now,” she said.

Family portraits are an important remembrance for Shelton. A portrait of her mother, painted by her grandmother, hangs near the flagstone fireplace downstairs. Done in 1956, the painting depicts a 16-year-old girl checking the bureau mirror in a bedroom before she leaves for a dance. And on the upstairs landing, there is a portrait of one of Shelton’s grandmothers, painted by the other grandmother.

When she could not find the simple botanicals she wanted to hang above the headboard in the master bedroom, she made them herself.

“I do not pretend to be a visual artist. I think of my writing as my art, but no one had what I was looking for,” said Shelton, who coauthored two devotionals (Christmas Matters and Easter Matters, available at katyshelton. com) with childhood friend Anna Nash.

An occasional freelance writer for Lake magazine, Shelton works full time as a medical records and referral coordinator at the UAB Medicine Russell Medical Cancer Center.

“We came to the lake to retire, but then we both took jobs,” she laughed. “John is a Realtor at Lake Martin Realty and also assists Hoar 54 LAKE

The downstairs living space is the perfect size when it’s just the two of them but will easily accommodate more as the family grows.

In the kitchen, a granite island of more than 14 feet will accommodate eight, though the Sheltons generally keep just four stools at the bar. A zinc-topped dining table on a jute rug offers slightly more formal seating for meals, and an arrangement of comfortable sofas and chairs in front of the television above the hearth makes the space cozy on chilly evenings.

Martin, as it offers a nod to the lake’s history of humble cabins. The Sheltons gave their main living space a cozy feel by running the paneling across the ceiling and topping it with oak beams. They used oak for the floors, as well, and chose a neutral palette to add warmth.

Furnishings, rugs, accent tables, bathroom vanities, bedroom linens and even the kitchen backsplash are done in tan tones, from light creamy colors to simple beige, light tans and darker browns.

“I just wanted very warm, neutral colors, so it would be relaxing,” Shelton said. “But for a home with no color, it sure has a lot of colors.”

She adds interest to the rooms with the introduction of subtle colors in the artwork

and fabrics – the lovely teal dress her mother wears in her portrait; the yellow dress in her grandmother’s portrait; a sage green stripe beside a washed blue stripe in Jack’s bedspread and a small pop of red on Drake’s bed.

While the Sheltons haven’t exactly retired at the lake just yet, they have built a home that comfortably accommodates them now and keeps them to be poised for the future whenever they decide to slow down.

We are members of both the Alexander City Chamber of Commerce and the Lake Martin Dadeville Area Chamber of Commerce. Beginning in September, HOBO board members will attend the county commission meetings of Tallapoosa and Elmore counties.

HOBOs monitor filings with FERC and communicate with Alabama Power on lake regulations. Our board of directors works to keep members informed about what is going on with Lake Martin. We encourage our members to get engaged in the community.

The seeds could be crushed and ground to allow for absorption. This process makes a paste called tahini, which could be used in many recipes.

When eaten in moderation, nut and seed butters could be part of a healthy, well balanced diet. They contribute versatility, creaminess, heart healthy fats, fiber and protein that are not found in most cream sauces. Nut butters add richness to recipes or could serve as satisfying snacks. Some ideas to incorporate nut and seed butters into meal planning include mixing them into oatmeal for added flavor and making peanut butter balls as a great snack. Serve peanut sauce for chicken satay and serve nut butters with apples and celery. Mix nut and seed butters into smoothies, brownies and muffins.

Nut Butter Protein Balls 1/2 cup almond butter 1/2 cup peanut butter 1/2 cup honey 1/4 cup ground flax seed 1 cup nonfat powdered milk Mix all ingredients together and form into small balls. Place in an airtight container in the refrigerator.

Cut peaches into chunks, removing stone, and combine with sugar and water. Bring to a rolling boil and reduce temperature to simmer.

Add wrapped rosemary; wrapping rosemary in cheesecloth will help to keep the sorbet clean of rosemary pieces that may fall off the sprigs. Cook for another five minutes and remove rosemary.

Blend until smooth.

Return peach mixture to pot and carefully drop a raw egg, still in the shell, into the sorbet. A dimesized part of the egg should float to the top. If the egg sinks, remove it and add 1/8 cup more sugar and bring to a boil. Test again with the egg. Remove egg when sorbet passes the test.

Place mixture in a clean container and chill before spinning.

Once cooled, place in an ice cream mixer and spin 8 to 10 minutes until texture is creamy.

The Bright Side of Boat Traffic

I

t was a Saturday afternoon of fishing on Lake Martin.

The main lake was a literal froth from boat traffic, but it had been a while since I had wetted a line on the home lake, and I was determined to catch a few fish. I fired up the Mercury Pro XS, lowered the nose of my Phoenix 921 and ran about 30 miles per hour, just letting it cut through the waves. I hadn’t really decided yet where I wanted to go. Should I run out to deeper water offshore or go off the grid to somewhere more isolated? Either approach had potential.

Although I have visited this topic before, it’s one that anglers need to consider more these days. When fishing all seasons like many anglers do, it’s easy to get discouraged by the waves and by other boaters on the lake during the busy season, which seems to extend a little longer each year.

Anglers’ minds are conditioned to think that when everything is disturbed, like it is on a summer Saturday, the fish aren’t going to bite. This may be true at other times of year and during other seasons, but I’ve seen a change in how the fish respond to boat traffic in recent years.

Heat, cold, mud, wind, natural changes in water chemistry, water flow – the list of factors goes on and on. Fish are very good at seeking out areas that are comfortable and offer the best opportunities for feeding. It is key for anglers to note this and choose areas that offer what the fish need to survive.

The phenomenon that I’ve personally observed over recent years should encourage any angler that thinks boat traffic is a negative. While the waves make fishing tougher than normal and require extra time to get around, the bass on Lake Martin, like bass all over the country, have adapted and learned to take advantage of the disturbance.

Consider the fact that Lake Martin has changed over recent years. Growing up, the primary food sources for bass were shad, crawfish, spottails and bream. In recent years, a new baitfish has been introduced and is flourishing in freshwater reservoirs: blueback herring. They may look very similar to threadfin shad, but their brains are apparently very different. They are more pelagic and are perfectly content to cruise over a river or creek channel. Structure, like underwater points and humps, are only suggestions as places to hang out, unlike traditional forage fish.

The predator fish, like bass, stripers and others, still prefer to relate to structure, which they use as ambush opportunities for passing bait. They venture off to the 68 LAKE

deeper edges or push the baitfish up on the shallower areas to feed.

A blueback herring must taste pretty good to a spotted bass or striper because once they’ve had a bite of one, the mindset changes. It’s as though the focus of the bass shifts to chasing these baitfish constantly. They almost forget about everything else going on around them. But instead of staying close to structure, those baitfish are out roaming the freshwater abyss, where bass aren’t as good at catching them.

Enter the boat traffic. Most recreational boaters, at least those that know better, try to avoid running across shallow areas. Any time a boater runs too close to a shallow water marker or a bank, a very expensive prop, lower unit and boat hull are put at risk. It only takes a second to ruin the day and the equipment.

Channels are the safest places for recreational boaters traveling from River North or Wind Creek to Bay Pines, Chimney Rock, Chuck’s Marina, Kowaliga or The Landing. These are the same channels where blueback herring like to suspend.

The constant boat traffic disturbs the channels where the baitfish would be hanging out. As boat after boat travels over their heads, the bait gets disoriented and breaks up.

Boat after boat passes over, and the bait get pushed out of their channel and closer and closer to structure, where the bass are waiting. After days, weeks and months of this happening, the bass recognize that the boat traffic sends meals.

The traffic is a trigger of sorts, similar to what we see on the Coosa River lakes and the Alabama River when Alabama Power starts generating current through the dams. It presents the bass with an opportunity to feed, and when they get triggered to feed, anglers know the bass could be duped.

Instead of getting discouraged by the boat traffic, anglers could look at it as an opportunity to catch more fish, just as the fish look at the traffic as an opportunity to feed. Look for areas where the traffic could be driving the baitfish but also are rela-

tively calm enough to fish. These are the places the bass will seek out as ambush points. Your boat may get jostled around some from the waves, and occasionally, a boater who doesn’t understand might get too close, but the fish will still bite. They might even bite better later in the day during the busy season as a result of the boat traffic.

These fish are typically in larger schools, and when you find them, it’s a multiple-fish stop. There are several techniques that work, all the way from topwater for schoolers to bottom-bouncing worms and jigs. A drop shot is a great option when they get directly under the boat. The water is fairly clear in these offshore areas, so natural, shad-like colors or translucent greens, like watermelon seed, are great.

Safety is critical, so be aware of the traffic and know that a bass boat on Lake Martin these days is like a motorcycle on the highway. Not everyone is looking for small craft, so be visible. Consider wearing bright clothing, and don’t be afraid to wave when necessary to let them know you’re there.

If taking advantage of the offshore bite sounds like a little too much work or risk, there is an alternative. Going off the grid is the other option – going into the back of a big slough, the back of a creek, way upriver or to an area with few houses. Keep in mind that these are areas less likely to have blueback herring. The fish in these areas would be more traditional feeders and usually more spread out.

The advantage of going off the grid during the busy sea-

son is a little more peaceful, and it allows an angler to fish shallow targets. Trees, stumps, rocks and ditches are all in play. Shade is a big factor for these fish, as the water is still pretty warm. They will be more conditioned to feeding on bream, spottails and shad. One of my favorites for these areas is a topwater bait. Soft plastic stick baits, jigs and crankbaits could be good as well. Having a presentation that allows anglers to cover more water helps, given the rogue nature of late summer shallow-water fish.

In creeks that get recharged by summer thunderstorms, spotted bass are in play, along with the largemouth that are known for social distancing. Look for areas that have some type of current and/or depth. Any shade provided by an overhanging tree or shallow submerged cover makes a good ambush point for shallow bass.

When embracing that irresistible urge to catch late summer bass like I did, be comforted by the fact that the fishing can be good despite the boat traffic. I view it as an inconvenience above the water, but beneath the surface, where it really matters, the fish are biting. That’s what keeps anglers going – getting that bite, setting a hook and feeling the tug on the line.
