W

hen I first looked at Fusion Grill’s menu, I was in culinary heaven. The unique flavor combinations and use of rare ingredients spoke to my soul.

While writing may be my first love and passion, I have a strong affinity for culinary flair. Aside from a degree in journalism, I took my adoration for cooking to a higher level and received a culinary arts degree as well.

After having worked in the restaurant world for a few years, I can appreciate and respect the hard work, dedication and creativity it takes to run restaurants and prepare menus that keep customers coming through the doors.

Dennis Kirkland, owner of Fusion Grill, took a leap when he stepped outside traditional fare – with no professional culinary training, just the love of testing new recipes and making people happy.

Read about Fusion Grill, located on Tallassee Street in Dadeville, on page 10 and experience the fascinating culinary world Kirkland, along with Sous Chef Ty Patterson, has created.

Sidney Hancock also is skilled in the art of producing quality ingredients. Her gardening column this month reminds us that in our Southern climate, vegetable gardens could last longer and continue to flourish. Turn to page 14 for tips on how to care for your vegetables for growth success.

Producing your own food comes in many forms, and with hunting season just around the corner, many are gearing up for the sport. Before you do, turn to page 30 for safety tips, hunting season information and a list on where to process deer meat.

Greg Keiser takes the sport a step further and has honed the craft of training bird dogs. The poise these dogs possess when sent to search for a bird still seems unfathomable to me. With 40 years of experience in the field, Keiser’s talent is evident of his success. Read more about the kennel manager at Five Star Preserve on page 26.

Whether you’re a culinary fan or not, food is something to be enjoyed and shared. Fall is starting to settle in, which leads to a whole new season of produce on the way. BRHS grad achieves rare military rank No less famous than her brother Terrell Owens, Carla Russell was promoted to one of the most rare ranks awarded to officers in the military.

The 1984 Benjamin Russell High School graduate was awarded the rank of Chief Warrant Officer 5, a rank that only 3 percent of all officers in the U.S. Army ever earn.

Sometimes referred to as unicorns as a result of their paucity, those with this rank do not command troops but do command a great deal of respect from others in the service, according to Army spokesperson David Lakin.

Right after high school graduation Russell enlisted and was sent to Fort Dix, New Jersey, for basic training.

Having been stationed all over the country, the human resources official said Russell's current location has been one of the most memorable. Russell began working at The Pentagon in

December 2017, which she said gives her an opportunity to work in a different aspect of human resources.

Along with Wilkinson, Alexander City Schools Superintendent Dr. Darrell Cooper said the staff does a great job of identifying potential challenges for continued success. Cooper said he felt students are well prepared for their futures.

The fine arts programs have grown; there are dedicated STEM teachers; all students have technological devices in the system’s one-to-one initiative; and students are encouraged to engage in community service all the way down to the kindergarten level.

Central Alabama Community College Director Dr. Susan Burrow said the school has added a Prattville location, and the number of students utilizing dualenrollment has significantly increased.

“I feel good about where things are going. Events like today are good, giving the public valuable insight into the strengths our education systems have,” Burrow said. ~Donald Campbell

Jolye Durrett is a registered nurse at Russell Medical's Wound Care and Hyberbaric Medicine. Last month, she was awarded Miss Sunbelt Rodeo Queen and also won the speech aspect of the competition. Durrett will represent the Sunbelt Agriculture Expo throughout the year in her new position. The Sunbelt Rodeo Pageant is held in Moultrie, Georgia.

ennis Kirkland certainly goes for the WOW factor with his creative one-of-a-kind dishes at Fusion Grill. The new restaurant in Dadeville features food combinations that keep people coming back for

more.

The first day he opened the doors, Kirkland said there was an hour and 15-minute wait in the 60-seat contemporary, rustic dining area.

“I never dreamed to have been doing this much business. I always enjoyed cooking, and I love to experiment with food,” said Kirkland, who had worked as a human resources executive for 18 years before opening Fusion Grill at 1065 Tallassee St. While he has no formal culinary training, Kirkland's passion for flavor combinations is evident in the menu items he conjures up. The smallest details make a difference, Kirkland said.

For example, as opposed to adding regular sautéed onions to dishes, Kirkland uses whiskey onions and includes them in many of his signature sandwiches.

One of the current favorite dishes initially was thought to be a flop. The Blackberry Boondoggle is made with smoked turkey, bacon and pickled jalapenos on a bed of melted cheeses smothered with homemade blackberry jam.

While Fusion Grill certainly leans to the side of distinctive, Kirkland said he has been humbled by the enthusiasm of his patrons to try new things, such as pork wings that come from the shank of a pig. This dish is a unique spin on traditional wings and is rarely seen in this area.

“I studied menus at local places since I knew I wanted something different. I wanted funky, homegrown and fresh with a creative side. I wanted something people are not used to seeing around here,” Kirkland added.

The name Fusion Grill is two-fold. Kirkland, along with his wife and kids, lives on a family farmhouse in Jacksons Gap where he grows vegetables and raises both Duroc and Yorkshire hogs.

“I wanted to fuse the use of this land and its amenities with my love for cooking,” he said.

Additionally, Kirkland has no Blend Styles and Flavor one style of cooking. He blends Sous Chef Ty different styles, cuisines and cooking Patterson (left) techniques to create the flavor profiles and Owner/Head he seeks. Although many dishes are Pitmaster Dennis Southern-based, Kirkland adds his Kirkland show off some of their favorite, own twists. Originally from Pensacola, Florida, Kirkland decided to move to this area to be close to family.

Having spent time partnering with Old Brothers BBQ, the business in Fusion Grill’s current location, Kirkland saw the opportunity to kick-start his dream career when the space became available. He spent four months renovating, doing the woodwork by hand and remodeling with the help of family and friends.

“I had always been told that I needed to open a restaurant, so I just kind of jumped in head first,” said Kirkland.

Sous Chef Ty Patterson is Kirkland’s right hand and mans the multiple smokers on site. What started with just the two of them has turned into a cook team of five to keep up with demand.

Kirkland and his team make six homemade barbeque sauces, seven homemade salad dressings, homemade desserts and other unique sauces used throughout the menu, such as tomato jam and hatch green chili sauce.

Weekly specials are Kirkland’s way to test new ideas and feature off-the-wall menu items, and his cooking style is not defined by specifics.

There is a menu suitable for children, and the names of these items play off the reaction of most children’s tastes. There is the “I don’t know” and “I don’t’ care,” simple translates to chicken nuggets, burgers, hot dogs and the like.

Catering is available, and Kirkland said they’ve done quite a bit for Dadeville High School, including sports banquets and reunions.

“It’s very humbling to see the reaction from people supporting the business. Our catering menu is simple at the moment, but we hope to expand our offerings in the future,” Kirkland said.

“The degree of warmth this community has already given me is incredible,” said Kirkland.

Fusion Grill currently is open for lunch Tuesdays through Sundays from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., but Kirkland said he might consider opening for dinner a few days a week in the future. He also plans to turn an unused section of the building into a sports bar.

ne of the perks of living in Alabama – though we may curse it sometimes – is the long growing season we get when fall comes with little to no change in temperature. Those sweltering hot days allow us to extend the tastes of summer into fall with tomato sandwiches, pickled okra and fresh herbs.

Plants are typically still producing at this point, but some parts of the garden probably need a bit of a facelift.

By following these tips, fading summer plots could transition into a fall garden that will carry through to winter.

Avoid a late summer slump by getting outside in the morning or evening to avoid the hottest times of the day.

Remove diseased or spent plants that are tuckered out for the season. It is best to burn or haul away any diseased plant material, rather than adding it to compost, to avoid spreading disease in the garden.

If you keep any plants that are still producing, make sure they are in tip-top shape. Prune the suckers off the tomato plants and deadhead and add extra twine to trellises if

Take note of what varieties were planted for the summer and make a map of where they were in the garden. Note-taking will determine which varieties did well and which should be avoided next year. Seasonal maps will help when it comes to crop rotation. It’s best to not plant the same plants in the same spot every year.

Eventually, this will drain the nutrients from the soil and increase the number of disease problems plants could face.

Divide crops into groups: legumes, leafy, fruit and root crops. Divide the garden into four different sections, and plant one crop group per section. Each

year, rotate crop groups by one section. For example, this year leafy greens may have been planted in section one, but next year, they should be planted in section two.

If plants are not going to be replaced in now empty or fallow areas of the garden, consider planting a cover crop. This will help to keep weeds at a minimum and will build up the soil with organic matter. For a short-term solution to preventing weeds, lay down a sheet of plastic, which will smother them and keep them at bay until something new is planted.

maturity (DTM). Each seed packet tells how many days from seed that each variety of plant will take to mature or produce.

Take a look at the area’s first frost date and compare this to the days to maturity. Make the most of the warmer weather by selecting varieties with shorter DTM. Stagger plantings by sowing seed every two to three weeks with the fewer days to maturity, or select varieties with short, mid and long DTM and make one single planting. This will extend the harvest, but the plants will grow more slowly after frost.

Make sure to amend the soil with fertilizer and compost prior to planting. This will replenish the soil with nutrients used by plants grown over the summer.

To protect against frost and freeze damage, try covering the beds with burlap or a floating row cover supported by stakes or wire to keep the material from directly touching the plants. Water the plants lightly during the day prior to covering. Remove the cover by mid-morning the next day.

Here Come the Trojans!

I

t’s that time of year when our Central Alabama Community College Trojans begin hitting the road for a new year of competitive golf. Just as in all years past, I am very excited to get things under way.

The group of young men who are with us this year have been working very hard in practice, are attentive to my instructions and have been giving play their full efforts. If we can maintain this attitude and work ethic, we could be a team with targets on our backs.

I would like to introduce our Trojan golfers. Returning for their second years as sophomores are Caleb O’Toole from Pinson; Reed Love from Trussville; Owen Burt from Millbrook; and Noah Dennis from Trussville.

Our freshmen squad consists of Daniel Finnemann from Newnan, Georgia; Jackson Schultz from McDonough, Georgia; Andrew Friend from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania; and one of Alexander City’s very own – Dylan Muncus.

CACC golf began this year ranked number five in the Bushnell Golfweek NJCAA Division 1 Coaches Poll. There are a number of top-performing college golf programs in Division 1 NJCAA, and I am proud to be ranked in the top five. Our job now is to work our way to the highest level. I would be very disappointed if we were to fall back as the year progressed.

It is great to see that a few of my present sophomores are already getting some good looks from Division 1 and Division 2 NCAA universities. This has fired up the rest of the sophomores and opened the eyes of many freshmen.

Feel free to visit us during any of our tournaments. We love spectators Dave Jennings and supporters of Trojan Golf. Our talent will impress those that watch us play.

As noted by the calendar of events in which we are scheduled to compete, we will be doing some extensive traveling.

Unlike Division 1 university golf, there is always an entry fee for our college golf tournaments. The entry fee, along with the travel expenses for five players and a coach, becomes quite expensive for us at CACC. Our golf program relies on the benevolence of our supporters in funding our program.

he Fab Four that captivated audiences around the world in the early ’60s has returned in the form of an authentic Beatles tribute band with mop tops, custom-made suits and vintage instruments.

The Return performs an exhilarating “Beatlemania” concert experience that newer generations never had the chance to enjoy.

Hosted by Alexander City Arts on Oct. 25 at 7 p.m. in the Benjamin Russell High School Auditorium, the imitations of John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison and Ringo Starr will take the stage to excite a crowd of all ages with songs from the early Beatles’ years.

One of their favorite songs to perform is Twist and Shout. Mike Fulop, who plays guitar as Harrison and also is manager for The Return, said it’s the perfect combination of tempo and repetitive lyrics that always works to get people on their

feet and dancing.

“We really crave the audience participation. The experience is authentic, with the setup, classic logo, vintage guitars – just looking at the stage is a really cool experience,” said Fulop.

The Return’s performances last about 90 minutes; whereas, The Beatles rarely played for longer than 25 to 30 minutes at a time.

The Return’s original four members joined together in the early ’90s as diehard fans jamming to some of their favorite Beatles songs. While the group never intended to do anything more with it, their band sessions became a local hangout.

After being asked to perform at an event, the group stepped up its presentation for added entertainment by getting into character with black suits and classic instruments.

“We even had a friend dress up like

Ed Sullivan to introduce us. That moment still sticks in my memory. It’s the most fun we’ve ever had,” said Fulop.

Afterward, someone approached the band and asked them to play a gig. It snowballed from there, and 23 years later, the band has played internationally and achieved many humbling accomplishments.

Early in its career, The Return, based out of Griffin, Georgia, was asked to play at Atlanta’s Fox 97 oldies concert in front of 50,000 people.

“We got to play on the same bill as a lot of our idols and a lot of Beatles idols. We also played a private event for a tour group in London at Abbey Road Studios where The Beatles recorded 90 percent of its stuff,” said Fulop.

After those two shows, all four band members admitted to being the most nervous they had been in their lives, said Fulop.

The gang also did a five-week tour of Japan around 2015 and performed across 20 cities while diving into a foreign culture. A man who had hired them for a gig nearly 10 years ago is the one who set up that tour.

“We’ve always been trying to put our name out there. It takes years to plan and promote events. Word of mouth and networking with people has helped us tremendously,” Fulop added.

The fundamental basis of The Return is the true exuded authenticity. From Richard Stelling as Lennon chewing gum on stage when playing, to right-handed Mike Vargo as McCartney learning to play bass guitar left-handed. The band members said even the most minor details are significant to a performance.

“It’s mostly how we all make a living, but it tends to go up and down from year to year,” said Fulop.

Adam Thurston is a self-taught drummer who performs as Starr but also owns a hardwood flooring business. Stelling also works for iHeart radio on the side.

Today, The Return plays thousands of shows for theaters, festivals, cruise ships, weddings, corporate events and so much more.

“We are just really excited to come there, and we hope Alexander City is excited for us too,” said Fulop.

Innovation Center jumpstarts economic upturn

T

here have long been concerns about the state of our Tallapoosa County economy. Quality jobs have been lacking locally, so we’ve seen many talented people look for employment out of town, often driving as far as Montgomery or West Point for good opportunities.

We needed to think of new ways to drive business growth, and one of the ideas we kicked around was launching a collaborative space for businesses to get started and grow. When we first talked about the concept, it seemed like a tall challenge for a small city.

Still, the Alexander City Chamber of Commerce and Valley National Bank decided last year to defy the odds and open the Lake Martin Innovation Center, and our local economy is already reaping the rewards.

The Lake Martin Innovation Center opened its doors in February 2017 and has since served as a springboard for businesses to grow. It’s now home to the chamber of commerce and seven successful small businesses that are generating a total of more than 50 jobs locally. And its success is setting an example for other small cities around Alabama to follow.

Originally, the innovation center, a 17,500 square-foot building off Highway 280, was an operations center for a bank. When the bank moved its branch to the building next door, the bank leased the space to the chamber for $100 per year as a way to support local business growth.

Entrepreneurship and innovation are at the core of the bank’s community relations’ efforts, so it was a natural fit to work with the chamber and try something new.

The building was converted into offices and meeting spaces and is now home private equity and legal firms to IT and healthcare companies.

Beyond Home Care, an in-home personal and elderly care service founded by Kelly Adams, is an example of the type of successful business that’s

been helped by the innovation center.

With the chamber just down the hall, Adams took advantage of chamber networking events and workshops as a way to connect with local business owners and learn from their successes.

Since then, Beyond Home Care has grown to employ more than 35 people, who care for more than 50 clients in the region.

Other companies in the innovation center have similar success stories.

Among them are Lowden Street Capital, a private equity firm; VuePoint Diagnostics, a radiology/diagnostics company; and Nowlin & Associates, a wealth management firm.

The success of the center’s tenants shows the importance of local businesses supporting and learning from each other, whether businesses are at the Lake Martin Innovation

Center or in other locations around Tallapoosa County.

There is still more room for tenants.

The center is actively seeking other companies for five spaces in the facility.

Office spaces range from 100 to 1,200 square feet in size with utilities, highspeed internet, janitorial services, security monitoring and access to audio/visual technology, all included in the monthly rent.

We encourage startups and individuals to learn more about the innovation center and find a way to get involved with the chamber, whether it’s by joining, attending chamber events or telling companies and businesspeople about the opportunities for companies that set up shop at the center.

The result will help Alexander City and Tallapoosa County grow a new kind of economy, based on innovation.

reg Keiser trapped a pigeon in a bird launcher placed among the tall grass. When he released his pointer from its box, the dog “went crazy” darting up and down the area until he came to a complete stop, frozen like a statue.

This German shorthaired pointer is just one of hundreds Keiser has worked with over his 40 years of field trialing and breeding bird dogs. The art of training pointing dogs is his specialty, and this skill comes from years of experience around the breed.

Keiser has been the kennel manager at Five Star Preserve for 23 years and has some guiding and dog training duties. He presently houses nearly 100 pointing and retrieving dogs at a time.

Soapbox derby returns to annual Fall Festival in Dadeville

The Ducky Ward Soapbox Derby is back by popular demand at this year’s Dadeville Fall Festival downtown at the Courthouse Square from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Oct. 6. The event will include vendors, kids’ activities, train rides, inflatables and arts and crafts.

Last year’s inaugural soapbox derby included some 30 hand-built cars that raced down the hill on Columbus Street at speeds that reached 24 miles per hour. The Tallapoosa County Commission will provide dumpsters for the disposal of household items at five locations from noon on Monday through Tuesday evening. The dumpsters will be available free of charge at the Alexander City Annex, 395 Lee St.; Double Bridges on Highway 63; Old Daviston School on state Route 22; Camp Hill Town Hall at 309 Holley Ave.; and Union Community Center at 4191 Highway 50. No liquids, appliances with compressors, tires, batteries, light bulbs, televisions, computers, propane tanks or hazardous or medical waste will be allowed. Lake Martin Golf Classic

This 14th annual golf tournament will be held at Stillwaters Golf and Country Club, and proceeds benefit the care of the goats on Goat Island, along with K911. There are spots for 24 teams at $500 per team. Prizes are available, along with complimentary breakfast and lunch, gift bags and door prizes.

An award presentation will be held after the touranment with live music and dinner.
