From the Editor’s Desk

I

t is with great pride that I share with you my new position as editor with Lake Martin Living magazine.

Many of you may already know me or have seen me running around with a camera and notepad at any number of events. For those that don’t, I have been with Tallapoosa Publishers Inc., for a year and a half. Originally from New Jersey, I joined TPI as assistant magazine editor at all three magazine publications: Lake Martin Living, Lake and Elmore County Living.

Having taken on the responsibility as Elmore County Living editor last fall, I am elated to tackle this new adventure.

Tallapoosa County has become my home quickly and comfortably, and I have a deep appreciation for this area, its people and all the exhilarating things happening. Within the first year living here, I jumped into the community headfirst.

As a board member of the Lake Martin Young Professionals; board member of Main Street Alexander City and participant of its promotions committee; member of Clean Community Partnership; and actively involved with the development of Alexander City Theatre II (just to name a few), I have come to learn how strong community ties really are and how passionate our townspeople are in working together to maintain the area’s distinction.

I have thoroughly enjoyed the opportunity to share this excellence with you – our readers. I applaud your efforts, your sense of stewardship, your entrepreneurial instincts and your accomplishments.

It is my great honor to continue doing so. If you see something or someone notable, please send your stories my way, so we can continue to share the abundant resources in and around our area, and next time I dart past you with my notebook, stop me and introduce yourself. I would love to meet you.

A Dream Come True

Dadeville High School student Neill Trotman finally took the helm of his dream – a pirate-themed tree house – last month, thanks to Make-A-Wish.

Trotman’s pirate ship set sail from far away seas three years ago not knowing if it would ever see land again. His red cedar ship made it up the Alabama River into the Tallapoosa River and through three dams before crashing on the rocks of Birch Shoals in Sandy Creek.

Today, the remains of that ship are a pirate-themed tree house escape for the 14-year-old. Instead of a plank, it has a spiral slide to the ground.

“This is so cool,” Neill said with a smile as his mother removed a blindfold.

Trotman’s mother Jennifer said the tree house has been a dream of Neill’s for a while. He got the idea from his two favorite things – the Animal Planet show Treehouse Masters and the movie series

Pirates of the Caribbean.

Thanks to Joshua Bartlett of Imagine That Playhouses, along with Terri Floyd and Coleen Humphries of Make-AWish Alabama, Trotman’s tree house is decked out with a finger print kit, science kit, a microscope and a listening device.

Russell Lands neighborhood slated for city limits Russell Lands announced last month the development of its new neighborhood located within Alexander City city limits.

White Oak Landing will include 44 turnkey waterfront homes at the $500,000 price point in the old Russell Ferry Estates neighborhood.

Russell Lands Vice President of Sales Steve Arnberg said Russell Lands would be working with the same team that developed the Cedar Point area. Homes will be designed by Mitch Ginn, Larry Furlong and Michael O’Kelley.

“This team of developer-builders has won a real following with their clientele at Cedar Point,” Arnberg said. “David Nelson, Stan Graves, Scott Lett and Damon Story did a great job with Cedar Point. They only have four more lots left there, and they said they would be interested in doing another neighborhood.”

“We’re going after an affordable cabin or cottage feel with floor plans of 1,400 to 2,000 square feet with three or four bedrooms, granite countertops, custom cabinets, wood floors and sheetrock with some accent walls,” Nelson explained.

“These will be new construction on good lots with new piers and seawalls where they might be needed.”

Alexander City Mayor Jim Nabors said he is excited for this project to break ground, as it would provide an increase in property tax, create Waterfront Lots jobs through the build-out Fourty-four homes will be developed in the old Russell and generate other revenues.

ntries are now being accepted for the 2018 Lake Martin Living Art and Photography Contest, which this year will include monetary awards and a reception at Gallery 128/Emporium Wine on Oct. 1.

Judges for this year’s contest will designate awards to the winners in separate art and photography categories prior to the gallery reception. Renowned Montgomery artist Barbara Davis will judge the art category, and TPI owner and photographer Kenneth Boone will judge photography entries. Judges will be present at the reception.

An oil artist who loves to paint the effect of light, Davis holds a bachelor’s degree in fine arts from Auburn University at Montgomery. She is the winner of many awards, and her works have been widely exhibited. She will teach an oils class at this year’s Sarah Carlisle Towery Alabama Art Colony, which will sponsor an art walk at Children’s Harbor on Oct. 7.

Kenneth Boone is an award-winning and popular photographer who has taken photos around the world.

He is the owner of Lake, Lake Martin Living and Elmore County Living magazines, and his photographs frequently grace these publication covers and inside pages.

The first place art winner in this year’s Lake Martin Living Art and Photography Contest will receive $200, and the first place photography winner will receive $100. One of these first place entries will be featured

In addition, the overall People’s Choice winner will receive a gift certificate for art supplies from Hobby Lobby in Sylacauga.

ncoming Auburn students from Tallapoosa County and the surrounding area are already learning to bleed orange and blue.

The Lake Martin Auburn Club invited all freshmen in Tallapoosa, Coosa and Clay counties attending Auburn Univeristy in the fall for a Freshmen Send-Off earlier this month at the Lake Martin Innovation Center.

“We wanted to provide the opportunity for our members to meet these kids going to Auburn and let them know their local club was supporting them in their new adventure,” said Laurie Sturdivant, board member of LMAC. As the gathering was an inaugural event, Sturdivant said the board hopes to continue the tradition in future years.

“We want to build on what we started this year. The students and parents all seemed to enjoy it and got excited for what’s to come,” she added.

Students, along with their siblings and parents, enjoyed ice cream sundaes, an encouraging speech from Mindy Street of AU’s Office of Student Affairs and the chance to win some Tigers swag.

“Mindy motivated the students to get involved on campus and explained the various ways her office could be of service to them,” said Sturdivant.

Prevent insect infection

F

or home vegetable gardeners, growing summer squash is typically a no-brainer.

Squash plants mature quickly from seed or transplant and don’t require an abundant planting to feed a family.

Unfortunately, gardeners aren’t the only ones who enjoy a meal from these plants. Two common insect pests in the Cucurbita family that jeopardize growth in squash, melons or cucumbers are squash bugs and squash vine borers.

Either or both insects could devastate a squash crop nearly overnight. But gardeners could take steps to prevent insect infestations, if they know what to look for.

Garden Talk

Squash bugs (Anasa tristis) These insects crawl around on leaves and on the ground below plants. They lay shiny, reddish-brown eggs on various parts of the plants but are typically found on the leaves. Nymphs, or immature squash bugs, hatch from this aggregate of eggs in about seven days. The nymphs look similar to lighter gray adult squash bugs but lack wings.

Adults are slightly darker, flattened insects that blend in well with mulch and cracks in the soil.

Sidney Hancock Squash bugs have piercing and sucking mouthparts, which they use to feed on the squash leaves during both nymph and adult life stages. They secrete toxic saliva to the plant that causes the foliage to gradually wilt, blacken and die.

On top of initial feeding damage, squash bugs also transfer bacterial diseases to plants. A common problem is Cucurbit yellow vine disease, which causes plants to quickly yellow and die. There is no cure for the disease, so once the bacteria has been introduced to plants, death is inevitable.

What To Look For

Infection has caused this plant to wilt and it will eventually die.

If borer infection is suspected, check the stems of the plants near the soil line. As they bore into the plants, yellowish brown insect excrement, called frass, will build up around the holes.

Continued borer feeding will cause the stems to turn tan in color, appearing rotten and soft. The feeding cuts off the flow of water and nutrients to the plants, causing them to quickly wilt and die.

Prevention The key to preventing both squash bugs and squash vine borers is simple: Prevent the adult insects from laying eggs on and around plants.

Floating row covers or shade cloths with holes small enough to keep the adults out are really the only way to achieve that. Cover the planted areas with row cover fabric immediately after seeding or transplanting the plants, and keep the fabric in place until plants begin to flower. Remove the fabric while the plant is flowering to allow for insect pollination.

Routine Check-ups:Regularly check plants for symptoms and signs of insect damage. If signs of the borers are found – such as the yellowish frass – poke a pin into the stems of the plants just above the holes. This could wound and kill the larvae inside the stems. A similar, yet more invasive, solution involves slicing vertically into the stems with a knife to manually remove the larvae. Cover the slit areas with soil, and then water them to encourage rooting and recovery.

For squash bugs, hand-removal of egg clusters and adults could be effective in keeping the population low. Placing boards beneath the plants is another option, as the squash bugs could be removed when spotted hiding in the mornings.

Squash vine borers in any life stages – egg, larvae or adult moth – are difficult to spot, so hand removal will not be as effective. Keep plants well watered and fertilized. Heat and drought stress could speed up the death of plants, if they are under an insect attack.

Provide a distraction: If there is extra space in the garden, plant a trap crop of Hubbard Squash.

‘Baby Blue’ and ‘New England’ varieties have been successful in distracting squash bugs and vine borers.

Trap crops are used frequently in commercially integrated pest management systems. Providing the insects something more enticing could save the main crop from insect-feeding damage.

Use these tools to identify and protect against two common garden pests while producing an abundance of squash this summer.

Decisions, Decisions Golf grass could make or break game play

E

veryone makes poor decisions sometimes – we’re human. There are decisions where people would love to request a do-over. The hope is that decisions made create a positive impact on what’s being considered; however, that’s not always the case.

For example, on my way back to Alexander City from Auburn recently I encountered one of those thunderstorms that forces drivers to slow down from 65 mph to 35 or lower.

Some people, who obviously felt bulletproof, chose to maintain their rates of speed, and there were six or more drivers on the road that chose not to turn on their headlights during this horrendous storm. Those are pretty poor decisions, and in fact, irresponsible.

Personally, I am grateful and extremely happy that I made the decision to move to Alexander City to coach the Central Alabama Community College golf team. Great decision! When a good decision is made, enjoy it.

In mid-July, Brad Lacey, Coach York (head men’s golf coach at Wallace State Community College) JJ Adams (Wallace State’s women’s golf coach) and I headed to Tennessee for a weekend. This was our fourth year in a row making this trip that originated from our support for Todd Corum, Bridgestone golf representative for colleges and the PGA Tour.

Todd’s father passed away a few years ago and ever since, Todd and his two brothers have hosted a fundraising golf tournament in their hometown of Kingsport, Tennessee. The event raises money for athletic scholarships available to student athletes from the high school Todd’s father coached throughout his career.

Todd and Bridgestone have supported CACC golf ever since I came on board in 2001. I am proud to participate in the annual memorial tournament to honor Todd's father.

This event is held on a Saturday afternoon, and our group always leaves Alexander City on Friday to play golf in Chattanooga that afternoon; and then, drive and spend the night in the Kingsport area. We play in the Saturday fundraiser and we drive back to southeast Tennessee for a round of golf on Sunday before driving home. This year was no different.

The week following our Tennessee trip and immediately following a recruiting trip to our Alabama State Junior Championship, I drove to the south side of Atlanta to play golf with an old friend of mine. We played a great course and had a blast catching up for the day.

In our yearly Tennessee trips and in my recent trip to Georgia, I played golf courses in the Southeast’s typical mid- to upper90-degree heat. The heat in the South is something that we deal with, and it’s been around forever; however, bent grass greens in the South? Still? Really? With the innovation of hybrid Bermuda grass green surfaces? Really? Yes’m, the Georgia course had bent grass greens, as a few we played in Tennessee did.

What a great decision it was when Russell Lands chose to replace Willow Point Golf and Country Club’s green surfaces with hybrid Bermuda. Playing these bent grass greens on other 20 Lake Martin Living

golf courses in the summer was crazy, and honestly, I had forgotten the downturn of bent grass until I played on them again this year.

I couldn't count high enough to tally the huge ball marks left on these soft, damp greens, which the maintenance staff put in overtime watering the greens by hand. While we were playing, we had to stop and wait for the maintenance staff to finish soaking the greens for 15 minutes at least six times.

Great decision! These days at Willow Point, we have a strain Dave Jennings of hybrid Bermuda grass called Miniverde. This has proven to be a wonderful putting surface year round.

I’ve never heard anyone who finished playing Willow Point and say, ‘Gosh, those greens didn’t putt true.’

With the expertise of Cole McInnis and Brad Lacey at the helm overseeing Willow Point’s course, golfers have to travel far and wide to find a better-conditioned, more enjoyable course.

Late in July, WPCC closes for five days for heavy uninterrupted course maintenance. During this short time, workers perform their annual aerification. In less than three weeks, they pull cores from the greens leaving them to putt smooth as silk.

If you were to hightail it North, you also would find different grass types in the fairways. In much cooler or flat-out cold regions of the U.S., many golf courses have bent grass in the fairways. When a player takes a divot on bent grass, he moves property. A well-struck wedge could send a tuft of turf the size of a Volkswagen Beetle flying. If a course gets a few groups of golfers do not fill or replace divots on bent grass fairways, could be transformed into a minefield after a round or two.

Another type of grass that is widely used, mostly in the Midwest, is bluegrass. This grass is fine on a mowed fairway, but in the rough, it would challenge Hulk Hogan in swinging a club through, as it is a super thick bladed grass.

Jump over to the West Coast to find most courses off the Pacific coast use Poa grass greens. For earlier tee times, these greens are great, but later in the day, they could drive a player mad, as the golf ball looks like it is on a Plinko Board somewhere around the hole. Poa grass grows a cauliflower-shaped head as the day progresses, and a smooth roll is rarely experienced.

Yes, give me Bermuda grass on our fairways and hybrid Bermuda greens any day – firm and fast. Russell Lands made a great decision. For those of us who play Willow Point often, we need to thank our lucky stars – and applaud that great decision. ~Dave Jennings is the men's golf coach for Central Alabama Community College.

Alexander City Schools provide students more options New educational options in Alexander City are just two of the countrywide enhanced opportunities that local students will find as they return to school this fall.

After the closing of Faith Christian Academy in May, a group of concerned parents organized a similar faithbased school. Veritas Classical School will be open for the 2018-19 school year and will be housed in the Family Center of First Baptist Church of Alexander City.

As the East Alabama branch of a 20-year-old Georgia-based school, this program is not a completely new endeavor.

Director Chris Adkins said the classical curriculum will focus heavily on humanities and will be divided into two sections: the Trivium and the Quadrivium.

The nontraditional schedule is organized by day, and there is an option for parents to enroll children in just the humanities aspect. Homeschooling parents could take advantage of selected elements of the program at a Expanded Education

reduced tuition.

Primary instructional days will be Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. Monday and Tuesday will focus on math, science, fine arts and labs. Wednesday is the main day that will include chapel and integrated humanities instruction.

Wednesday also is when teachers will offer their classes tea times, which will be open to parents as well.

Thursday will be a supplemental day for humanities for discussion groups or additional assistance.

“This is the idea that language arts, social science, history and theology are all taught together. Classical education revolves around this concept,” said Adkins.

The final day of the week is creative expression day, said Adkins. He added that teachers will self-design the structure of classes to allow students some input in their educations.

“This also is the day to offer field trips, work on projects and bring it all together,” Adkins added.

Admission is open for kindergarten through 12th grade, at an annual tuition of $3,250, which could be paid in 10 monthly installments. In addition, students must fill out an application for $25 and pay a registration fee of $175.

“We are interested in producing a well-rounded, lifelong student. We want to keep the faith aspect in it all,” said Adkins.

Adkins’ background includes working as an international school director and coaching kids regarding college admissions. One of his future goals is to provide a two to four week international exchange program for cultural exposure.

“We want kids to be primed to attend university and be successful, and not just at local schools but the high-end colleges,” said Adkins. “We place a heavy emphasis on critical thinking and language arts.”

This year’s Veritas Classical School school year began on Aug. 7 and will follow the Alexander City Schools System schedule. Adkins anticipates between 70 and 80 enrolled students by year’s end. Currently, the majority of students are in the lower grades, but Adkins said he hopes to see increased enrollment in the upper grades in the near future.

The Alexander City School System also has expanded its virtual learning program, which is open to kindergarten through 12th grade students starting this year. After its success at Benjamin Russell High School three years ago and advancing the program to Alexander City Middle School, iAcademy is now offered to all grade levels.

Superintendent Darrell Cooper said he wants the city to advance on the educational curve.

“This gives more options for getting an education and staying ahead of the game,” said Cooper. iAcademy is available to all Alexander City students at no cost, but students must have access to internet to participate in the program. The schools will provide the necessary technology, and facilitators and certified teachers are available for assistance. Out-of-district students could pay tuitions of $500 to enroll.

A New Day for the Tigers At Dadeville High School, the Tigers now have a more equitable chance for sports victories with changes to the athletics department. Due to the reclassification of its division, new coaching positions and an updated track, DHS is on its way to starting the school year strong.

Dadeville now will compete at the Class 3A level, which changes some of its natural rivalries, according to Athletic Director Richard White.

“This gets our numbers closer to who we should be competing with. We were in with a bunch of large 4A schools, and when I am dressing out 32 kids and they have 75, it takes a toll, as far as depth is considered,” White said.

Every two years, schools are evaluated for athletic classification based on student enrollment. The Alabama High School Athletic Association uses a formula that includes class attendance to assess the categories in which schools should be placed for championship programs.

Seven classification levels provide opportunities for changing memberships.

“We will be keeping play closer to home, which is nice because the region is so spread out,” White said.

Dadeville’s football team now will compete in Region 3 and will keep Elmore County as a non-region rival, but no longer will play Munford and Tallassee. The Tigers will play against Beulah, Bullock County, Pike Road, Prattville Christian, Saint James, Southside Selma and Montgomery Academy.

“The last two years, we were half a student away from being 3A, so we should have dropped back then,” said White.

In most other sports, Dadeville will compete in area play with Beulah, B.B. Comer and Randolph County.

Along with the reclassification, the Tigers also have a new head baseball coach this year. Curtis Martin, who had been the junior high coach for two years, has moved up the ladder. With the drop to class 3A, Martin said, he 26 Lake Martin Living

Martin already is familiar with the players who will be moving up to the varsity team, as he has been coaching them in lower grades the last few years.

The Tigers track team has been successful, even with the lack of updated facilities. Now the track will offer the option of more events, including the long jump and triple jump pit and with eight lanes, the track is suitable for Dadeville to host home meets.

“The Dadeville track program has been very, very successful with very limited resources. This gives that group of kids and people dedicated more opportunities to compete. It also acts as a community walking trail, which was one of the conditions of the grant,” said Tallapoosa County Administrator Blake Beck.

Generals' gym gleams with pride The Horseshoe Bend Generals will play on a glistening, revamped gymnasium when the sneakers hit the renovated floor this fall.

After termites attacked it last year, administrators at HBS knew it was time to rehabilitate Coach Mike Boyd Gymnasium with a resurfaced floor and fresh coats of paint.

“We figured if we were going to do it, we might as well do it right,” said James Aulner, principal at HBS. While the majority of the funding came from the 1-cent county sales tax, HBS graduate Cade Worthy donated his Bryant-Jordan award money to his alma mater. The threesport athlete received $2,000 for his accomplishments and said donating to a cause so dear to his heart was worth it.

“It was just one of the needs of our school, and it was definitely something I’m proud of. I love the gym, and I saw a need for an upgraded one, so I figured why not help my school with something that meant so much to me?,” Worthy said.

Alabama Gym Floors, Inc., out of Birmingham sanded the floor down to the fresh, light-colored wood, which then was stained around the 3-point line and the key. The darker wood inside the 3-point arc was lightened to match the rest of the surface. The baselines were outlined in red with “Generals” legible through the wood coloring.

Giving Back

What used to be a basketball mark on the gym’s floor was replaced by the HBS logo to reflect a more universal feel, as more than just the basketball team uses the area. The Generals markings on the sides of the court were removed as they had faded to an obscure shade of blue.

The coaching staff collaborated to create the new design based on economic feasibility, and the finishing touches were a team effort, said Aulner. Assistant football and baseball coach David Caldwell launched the project by researching painting company prices for the walls.

After a defeated effort to find something reasonable, the coaches bound together to take on the project.

“Myself, coach Jason Johnson and coach Chad Kison decided we’d just do it ourselves,” said Caldwell. “Our wives helped, too, and we had a good time.”

After four days of working each night, the red paint on the gym walls was covered with an off-white, which provides more of an illusion of magnitude.

Relaxing treatment provides health benefits

M

assage is widely known for its power of relaxation, but as one of the oldest forms of healing therapies, the benefits of a good massage could be extensive, according to the Associated Bodywork and Massage Professionals' website.

With endless techniques and varieties of treatment available, massage therapy is used to achieve wellness and whole body maintenance.

Locally, a number of massage therapists perform this rehabilitation in different settings. From medical massage options for specific injuries to basic relaxation massages or spiritual balancing through Thai-style massage, the options in Tallapoosa County are widespread.

Alexander City native Jassmin Butler recently opened a practice in conjunction with Shay Dean Aesthetics on Calhoun Street. She is available for massage therapy Wednesday to Friday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

“To truly complete a medspa, you have to have a massage therapist on the team,” explained owner Shay Dean.

Butler, a licensed and certified massage therapist, brings five years of experience to the table and offers a variety of techniques to clients. Her skills range from basic Swedish massage, deep tissue and reflexology to an 80-minute hot stone massage, trigger point therapy and headache and temporomandibular joint disorders massage.

“Each customized massage focuses on specific problem areas after a consultation is done to assess an individual’s needs,” said Butler.

While Butler said she always maintains an element of relaxation, helping to alleviate someone’s ailments is a main reason she chose this profession.

“Massage therapy could specifically help with frozen shoulder, fibromyalgia, plantar fasciitis, lower back pain, pinched nerves and more. If you do regular sessions, it can help relieve the problem, more than just the pain,” said Butler, who can be reached at 256-537-4307.

Mix it Up in Dadeville offers massage therapy in the form of mom-to-be massages, chair massages and infant massages. For additional bonding between an infant and caregiver, infant massage classes help the development of a baby both physically and emotionally, according to the Mix it Up website.

Located at 128 N. Broadnax St. in Dadeville, Mix it Up is open for massage therapy Tuesday through Friday 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturdays 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. To set an appointment, call 256-8256408. The store carries spa products as well to complement an element of relaxation.

“It’s all about the ambiance.

I use soft lighting, relaxing music, essential oils and warm towels. I want to go all out when I care for my clients,” Butler said.

Local Thai massage therapist Abby Brown believes in a similar approach, but her form of healing is different from the traditional massage.

Brown trained in and continues to return to Thailand once a year to strengthen her skills. She is a licensed Thai massage therapist who uses acupressure to clear the client's channels while posing his body into yoga-like stretches.

“This uses Ayurvedic principles, which originated in India and are considered the foundation of healing. This form of massage is perfect for anyone for anything, as it is a whole body balance,” said Brown, who has 12 years of experience in this technique.

Thai massage, also known as nuad bo-Rarn, is done on a 1-inch thick Thai yoga mat, and the client is fully dressed. The therapist puts the client’s body in various yoga positions and works from the feet to the head, building a strong healing foundation, said Brown.

The benefits are similar to those of a basic relaxation and neuromuscular massage, she explained, but the technique also helps lengthen and stretch the body, encourage the natural flow of energy and realign the body's energy centers.

“It’s an emotional, physical and spiritual balancing,” said Brown.

The addition of an herbal compress is often used, which is customized to each individual’s ailments with fresh herbs and heat-steamed compresses.

Thai massage contains concentrated techniques as well, and Brown has been studying chi nei tsung, which is a Chinese process focusing on a deeper visceral healing. It’s an abdominal massage for internal ailments in the core and uses acupressure on energy points that are connected to organs within the body, she explained.

“I have never done the same massage twice. There

are so many different approaches, and massage needs to be customized to the individual. It is more than just going through the motions. After hours of work, practice, study and sitting with my guru in Thailand, I have experienced true healing through this modality. It has and still does enhance my life everyday,� said Brown.

Butler suggests that after receiving a massage, clients should hydrate to combat the lactic acid buildup in the body and also do some light stretching to avoid soreness.

can remember when Alexander City had its own credit bureau. It was located on Cherokee Road, and I enjoyed visiting with the three ladies who worked there. I also remember the time when a customer could go to the bank and speak with a loan officer, who made a credit decision based on his or her judgment and experience.

That was more than 30 years ago. Today, FICO scores are used in more than 90 percent of U.S. lending decisions.

FICO credit score

FICO (Fair Isaac Corporation) is a data analytics company based in California that focuses on credit-scoring services. It was founded by engineer William Fair and mathematician Earl Isaac in 1956. Its first generalpurpose FICO score was introduced in 1989, and mortgage companies began using FICO scores in 1995. Lenders use the three-digit scores to determine a potential borrower’s credit worthiness.

There are three major nationwide credit bureaus: TransUnion, Experian and Equifax. Their scores may vary slightly based on the credit information reported to them.

The importance of a credit score

Again, 90 percent of U.S. lending decisions are based on FICO credit scores, which measures consumer credit risk. A person's score not only determines loan eligibility but also the amount and interest rates offered. FICO scores may influence insurance rates and job eligibility as well.

We live in an age of technology.

We apply for credit, including mortgages, online. We want quick decisions and the ability to apply at convenient times – not just 9-to-5 business hours. The FICO scoring system has been upgraded and improved over the years, but the complex model is still a closely guarded secret.

Five components of a credit score

Payment history (35 percent) is considered the strongest indicator of how a loan applicant would pay in the future.

Credit utilization (30 percent) is a measure of how much available credit, such as credit cards, has actually been borrowed. Length of credit history (15 percent) provides more information and offers a better picture of long-term financial behavior. New credit (10 percent) may indicate financial difficulties and could lower the average age of a person's credit account. Credit mix (10 percent) indicates that the borrower could handle different types of credit – such as mortgage, installment and revolving credit accounts.

How to improve credit scores

First, make sure credit reports are accurate. Obtain a free copy from each of the three major credit-reporting agencies once a year from AnnualCreditReport.com. Review the reports for inaccuracies and follow the error-resolution procedures, if necessary.

Second, identify the areas that need improvement such as identity theft, medical collections or payments that were not made in a timely manner. Don’t forget the cellphone, utility and cable TV providers, as well.

Third, do something about it. Make current payments on time, pay down credit card balances and clear up collection accounts. Make an effort to have derogatory information deleted, if possible. Consider opening a secured credit card if the score is low or the credit is limited (mix factor). Limit new credit applications.

Lenders purchase more than 10 billion FICO scores each year, and consumers receive more than 30 million FICO scores annually.

r. Vic Hamilton sits back in his desk chair gazing out the window at a familiar scene.

The trees have grown substantially, and there’s a new office building on the grassy knoll in the distance, but for the most part, it’s déjà vu.

Dr. Hamilton has returned to the practice of gynecology in the same office suite where he spent numerous years treating women of all ages as a highly respected OB-GYN. Even the practice name, OB-GYN Associates at Russell Medical, evokes a nod to the past.

A native of Gadsden, Dr. Hamilton met his lovely wife, Betty, a Hackneyville gal, while in medical school at UAB School of Medicine. Nurse Betty stole his heart, and the two recently celebrated their 51st wedding anniversary.

Attracted to small-town living, the Hamiltons chose Alexander Susan Foy City as the place to practice medicine and raise their family.

Dr. Hamilton joined the Russell Medical staff in 1975 and joined Dr. Joseph Stimson in a bustling OB-GYN practice.

Dr. Hamilton delivered more than 4,500 babies before establishing a solo practice in gynecology in 1998. He has treated generations of patients and considers himself quite fortunate to follow multitudes of women from their teenage years through menopause and beyond. It’s this continuum of care and the ability to participate in those special milestones in women’s lives that attracted him to this field of medicine.

“The look on a new mom’s face, and that instant bond that occurs when you are delivering her baby is the most incredible feeling in the world,” said Hamilton. “That’s one of the many attributes of this profession – making a difference in people’s lives for the better. Whether it’s delivering babies, performing surgical procedures or treating medical conditions, it is truly an honor to provide care to my patients.”

Dr. Hamilton has many significant medical breakthroughs in his field and specifically notes the advancement of ultrasound technology in obstetrics, along with minimally invasive laparoscopic surgical procedures in gynecology as real game changers.

IN 2013, Dr. Hamilton retired from practicing gynecology and joined Wound Care and Hyperbaric Medicine at Russell Medical where he served as medical director prior to Dr. Regina Phillip’s arrival.

Recently, Dr. Hamilton made the decision to go back to his first love and join Dr. Brian Dix and Dr. William Moore in the newly formed group practice, OB-GYN Associates at Russell Medical. Dr. Dix is the primary obstetrician with Dr. Moore providing back-up obstetrics services in addition to his robust urogynecology practice.

Actively engage with Alabama's history HBNMP hosts its annual battle reenactment with live demonstrations Horseshoe Bend National Military Park will host its longrunning reenactment of the Battle of Horseshoe Bend August 25.

Muster on the Tallapoosa will focus on daily life around the time of the battle with powder weapon firing demonstrations, frontier life activities and Creek Indian habits.

This marks the 59th anniversary of the establishment of HBNMP. The Horseshoe Bend Speakers Symposium will return this year with historical topics by experts in the region’s history.

Five speakers will present between 11 a.m. and 2:30 p.m.

Living history demonstrators will be outside from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Admission is free.

The park is located at 11288 Horseshoe Bend Rd. in Daviston.

The network started with only 10 affiliates, and that number has increased more than 150 percent. Meanwhile, we also have produced a statewide AHSAA Radio Network Scoreboard Show in conjunction with local TV station WKGA-FM, which has been a big hit.

Still, nothing in life is certain. There was no guarantee that our group would be allowed to continue as the official radio network. After all, familiarity breeds contempt, right?

After a spirited luncheon several months ago with Executive Director Steve Savarese and representatives from corporate sponsor Russell Do it Centers, it appears as if our Alexander City-based crew will continue to be ASHAA’s choice in radio broadcasting for the foreseeable future.

That’s a big deal – at least to us it is.

Calling these contests is a labor of love. There is some money involved but barely enough to make an accountant smirk in April, especially when factoring in the value of our personal time. We all have other careers. We all work on other sports programming. We have wives and children and pets to care for.

We have friends to keep up with ... at least, those others guys do (feel free to give me sympathy here).

Our bunch gets to the games early, and we are generally the last group to leave. We study schools that most folks couldn’t Gynecology even find with the help of Lewis and/or Clark. We profile players who are known only by their parents. In other words, Obstetrics we put in a good bit of work.

So, it was certainly a proud moment when Savarese (and AHSAA legend Ron Ingram) spoke kindly and effusively about the organization’s relationship to our network.
