Extreme Beach Cleaning Twenty-five volunteers recently took part in a cleaning day at the viewpoint of sa Creueta de Formentor.

Marking the tenth anniversary of the declaration of the Serra de Tramuntana as a ‘Paratge Natural’, 18 climbers from different organisations and the Council of Pollensa participated.

The volunteers, some from the Association for Active and Adventure Tourism Companies, others from the Association for Mountain Guides, in collected waste from the foot of the viewpoint. In all, 4m3 of rubbish were picked up, the waste included bins, containers, bottles, cans, caps, fire extinguishers and posters, among other items. Located in an area of maximum environmental protection, this activity was a priority considering natural habitats and landscape. The day was a success meaning more plans to clean hard to reach areas are likely.

Local News Drainage News from Can Picafort Local Government in Can Picafort has asked the State to speed up the processing of its new sewage treatment plant. After seven years of processing, only the final approval of the environmental impact statement is pending and then the council can move forward with the tender.

In the letter to the Minister for Environment, Vincent Vidal (Minister for Environment, Agriculture and Fisheries) recalls that the sewage plant on the beach of Muro was built in 1988 to treat waste water from Can Picafort, which belongs to the municipality of Santa Margalida. In 2001 the urban growth of both areas highlighted the need to expand the facility, and in 2005 an institutional agreement was reached between the Balearic Water Agency and the Environmental Quality.

Approved in 2010 but since held up in administration, Vidal urges the Ministry to act quickly reminding them that the infrastructure is of major importance for the Albufera, which suffers with the accidental spills from a deep-water treatment plant which is designed to treat just 4,000m3 per day.

This is half the amount of waste that it receives in high season. He added that seven years of waiting to improve environmental quality is unacceptable.

A Greener Future in Alcudia The power plant of Murterar (Alcúdia), is to be closed progressively by the Government before 2020 and the alternative has already

been found. According to the general director of Energy, Joan Groizard, the electrical energy generated by Es Murterar will be produced by five new Solar Parks as well as an increase from the natural gas generators of Cas Tresorer and Son Reus.

Groizard stated that “Europe demands that Spain generates 20% renewable energy by 2020 and in the Balearic Islands we are only 2.5%. Our objective is that with the closing of Es Murterar we can reach 10% in three years.”

The Government has been speaking with Endesa, and the idea is to close group 1 and 2, which are more than 35 years old, and then close the other two groups of electrical production. This action is part of the Energy Transition Plan that was presented last week.

As it stands, Es Murterar is the largest energy generator in the Balearics and is responsible for 25% of CO2 emissions throughout the region. By switching to the other two centres and closing Es Murterar, there will be a reduction of 21% CO2 emissions.

Groizard reported that of the five proposed Solar Parks, four will be in Mallorca, the other in Menorca. The choice is for solar power over wind power because the enormous visual impact of wind turbines. However, this is an ongoing debate. While Solar Parks have less impact, they take up valuable space.

The GOB started its campaign in 2010 for the closure of the thermal power plant in Alcudia, calling for zero production of electricity from coal, which generates more CO2 emissions—the main cause of climate change.

Can Conill or Can ConNOT? The Mayor and his team at the council of Pollensa have had to defend their plans to build the new Health Centre on Can Conill again last week, this time in response to a petition organized by exmayor, Tomeu Cifre.

The government team (Junts Avançam and UMP) is not considering another option than the Can Conill site for the new facility health centre, the Mayor Miquel Angel March confirmed during a visit to the current PAC. He was visiting with Ib-Salut officials and health centre staff. The urgency is clear and IB-Salut already has a budget of €3.7m for the execution of the project. The plenary session this week aims to approve the change of qualification of the plot of Can Conill as a prelude to its transfer to the Ministry and the signing of the agreement with Ib-Salut. If successful, the new centre will have 17 consultation rooms and a surface of 2,020m2, three times the size of the PAC. Alejandra Valero, coordinator of the PAC, listed the main shortcomings of the current building, “We do not have sufficient consultation rooms and a doctor and a nurse are missing, they cannot come for lack of space.” They also do not have rooms for meetings or workshops and there are no means to perform minor surgery. In the Emergency room “there is no privacy” a new one is needed. At a structural level, the building is “old and full of cracks, the pipes are in poor condition, causing bad odours, and the air conditioning works a few times and then not.”

In response to resistance, Mayor March explained that

simply rebuilding the current PAC was “impossible because it involves demolishing it and digging a basement, since it could not grow in height,” he said. In addition, other local plots “are not urban or municipal and also do not accept a welfare use.”

The opposition party, Tots per Pollença, submitted a petition signed by almost 1,500 people, Mayor March recalled that the plenary has already approved on two occasions “by absolute majority” the decision to build on Can Conill.

Bullfighting Fallout Animanaturalis has condemned the acts of ‘extreme violence’ of several bullfighting fans in the bullfight last Sunday in the bullring of Muro, which were witnessed by minors, who are legally forbidden to watch bullfighting. They claim that spectators were throwing objects, even five-litre bottles, at the bullfighters who were trying to rig a bullfight in response to not being paid.

Guillermo Amengual of Animanaturalis and the campaign Mallorca Sense Sang, said it, “once again demonstrates who are the violent ones.”

If the City Council of Muro does not react to these bullfighting hooligans, and a businessman who believes he is above the law, “we will ask directly to the mayor’s office since they are ultimately responsible for the bullring.”

The controversial show nearly didn’t happen at all because of the dispute over paying the bullfighters.

In other Patrona news, the council has released the news on Facebook that the three entries for the design competition for the Patrona Poster and Programme didn’t quite make the grade, none of them fulfilled the criteria and it appears they have abandoned the competition, it’s not clear whether entries will be open again.

Photography Competition Back Again

¡Hola!

The news is full of a greener future this week, what with the climbers plunging to the bottom of the Formentor viewpoint to clean up, to closing the power plant in Alcudia, it seems there is a real push to a better cleaner future.

So why there are still stories of bullfighting in the year 2017 I just don’t understand. Surely this archaic tradition has had its day? If Sant Joan Pelos can’t have his little lamb (which he cradles like a little puppy on his dance around town) why is bullfighting still allowed?

Some members had already heard of Iglesia La Porciuncula (la Iglesia de Cristal), but a visit to ‘The Glass Church’, proved a really memorable occasion. Located in El Arenal, this is a 1960’s structure and is home to the best kept secret in Palma.

Members of ESRA North were collected by coach from all over the North and enjoyed a leisurely trip and nobody knew what to expect.

On arrival the visitors were lead to a museum which featured church history and a history of tourism in Mallorca. As people moved through the museum, the sound of a church organ could be heard in the background and that live organ music kept playing as they entered the church. The reaction was almost universal.

People came to a halt and uttered the only word they could, ‘WOW!’ The round

It was difficult to drag some people away from the church with its beautiful colours and the sound of the organ recital. But when they did leave, members could walk in the gardens and enjoy the shade. The visit ended with a Chinese lunch at The Wok in Palma. All in all it was a huge success. Over lunch the topic of conversation was about a magical church, its stained glass, peacefulness and colour!

One of their most recent articles was a summary of the new autonomo law for 2017, which is expected to be passed without delay in the beginning of July. It includes the following: Tarifa Plana, the social security contributions will be discounted to €50 per month for 12 months – previously this was set to 6 months.

This applies for new Autonomos and those who have not been registered for at least 2 years – previously this was 5 years.

Female autonomos who have been on maternity leave or leave to take care of a family member for 2 years are entitled to 12 months Tarifa Plana at €50p/m.

You can take a break three times per year and you only pay for the days you work – previously you had to pay a full month irrespectively.

Female autonomos will be exempt from paying contributions for a maximum of 12 months if they need to take time off to care for a family member.

Late payment will be fined just 10% if you pay within a month – previously it was 20%.

Accidents on the way to or from your regular place of work are now recognized and will be covered by the insurance included in your autonomo contributions.

Still under negotiation is the possibility to deduct a maximum of €12p/d for food & drink expenses.

There are more points and more information on the website, what’s more, once this law has been approved the article will be updated so it is worth checking again.

Another piece of advice this week was given after somebody, who was burnt in the San Juan festivities turned to a private hospital without a passport. Despite being in pain, she was turned away. This person had no idea that they were not at a NHS hospital where emergency treatment would have been given. Note that the EHIC would also not have covered costs at a private hospital.

Please spread the word that all visitors in Spain like residents, should carry legal identification at all times.

Optimist Pollensa 2017: National Championships This week sees the 2017 Optimist National Championships take place at the Puerto Pollensa Yacht Club (RCNPP). The council organized a parade on Monday evening along Passeig Anglada Camarassa (by the Hotel Sis Pins) where 149 young sailors from 10 autonomous communities of Spain, were led by the Xeremiers Orats and the giants of Pollença.

On Tuesday, 27th competitions began and will finish on Saturday 1st when team racing takes place. The individual races will decide who goes to Thailand in a couple of weeks to compete in the World Championships.

Competing boats leave every day at 12pm from the yacht club and will sail through the regatta field located at the end of Can Cullerassa.

About the Optimist A small single-handed dinghy, usually made of fibreglass, the Optimist is one of the most popular dinghies in the world.

Recognized as an international class by the International Sailing Federation, it is widely used for beginners, mainly children aged between 8-15years.

Many sailing schools and yacht clubs own a number of Optimists and they are the first boat most beginners will sail.

Currently the USA and Singapore are the best teams in the world.

The World Championships are held every year, this year’s will be in Thailand in a couple of weeks time.

On the last day of racing, Saturday 1st, there will be activities in the main square for all the children of the town, between 11am and 2pm. Activities and workshops for both visiting competitors and children of Pollensa will include juggling workshops, races among others. At 6.30pm, the championship will be close with the awards ceremony.

The Mallorquinista Soul Searching

Following on from Real Mallorca’s relegation to Spain’s Segunda B League, Chief Executive Moheta Molango and Director of Football Javier Reccio were summoned to a meeting in Phoenix Arizona with Robert Sarver the owner of the club. The fans lay the blame for the club’s demise fairly and squarely at the door of these two and were hoping for their dismissal. However they both survived somehow and were put in charge of restructuring the future of the islanders. Sarver did release some stinging comments without naming names referring to inadequate sporting decisions and the team did not reach the level that was expected and this was not due to lack of finance. Sarver went on to say that his objective was to continue to believe in his investment.

Upon their return Molango wasted no time in appointing a new head coach. Again the fans’ hopes were not to come to fruition, as they wanted former player Gustavo Siviero to take charge. Instead Vicente Moreno was charged with restoring some credibility to the Son Moix Stadium. He has a track record of achieving promotion from Segunda B, which he did with Nastic de Taragona and the following season took them to the play-offs for La Liga. He came across extremely well in his first press conference and espoused a strategy of hard work. He referred to the players having to deal with small grounds, poor pitches and the occasional artificial pitch. The players’ contracts terminate on 30th June and in the coming weeks most of them are expected to move on to new clubs although Lago Junior may stay albeit on a much reduced salary due to his previous relationship with Moreno. The new head coach has already recommended three players who were with him at Nastic and signings are imminent.

The presidency is a figurehead role these days and Molango is seeking an establishment figure that the fans can relate to.

It seems that Sarver is prepared to bankroll the club for the time being and Pepe Galvez has been retained as head coach of the B team who will now play in the Tercera Division. He may well be recommending a number of players to Moreno as the rules in the Segunda B stipulate that the squad is restricted to 22 players of which at least 6 must be under 23 years old at the commencement of the season.

News has been breaking that the league are investigating the outcome of Real Mallorca’s final home game of the 2015 / 2016 when they won by three goals to one at Valladolid. Mallorca had to win to avoid relegation and Valladolid, with nothing to play for, made ten changes to their previous line up. If any collusion between the two clubs can be established then the consequences could be very serious. At this stage there is no concrete evidence and the very last thing Real Mallorca need is to be brought before the authorities. There are interesting times ahead.
