Domestic violence is a very serious problem, the UN estimates that more than one in three women have suffered violence at some point in their lives. Even here on this island paradise, not a day passes without the police needing to help victims of domestic violence. Just within the last two years, two women were killed by their partners right here in the north.

To help raise money and awareness, Lions International, with the support of the Townhall in Pollensa, the Institut Balear de la Dona, and ONIT, are having a Day Against Domestic Violence on May 21 at the Claustre. In addition to abuse awareness education, there will be raffles, an art sale, face and nail painting, stories for children, games, homemade cakes, paella, bucks fizz, beer, and soft drinks, and live music. Lots of prizes! And admission is free.

Local News Yacht Club Controversy In the coming months, members of the Yacht Club in Puerto Pollensa will vote on how the Port concession is renewed. This announcement came at the recent General Assmebly which was presided by the deputy President, Mateu Dupuy.

Following criticism from a platform of members about a lack of information of the management and facilities, Dupuy told said that all information “will be given to members who ask for it.

There is nothing to hide.”

At the meeting, last year’s accounts were settled as was the budget for 2017.

But it was item number eight on the agenda – the concession – that was the most controversial. Some fear that moorings, which some members bought for a 50 year period would be lost following the cutbacks in the concession offered by the Coastal Authorities. This means that many would lose 20 years of mooring if it was renewed in 2018 and these moorings would be passed back for auction.

Dupuy reported that there are three options: to hold onto a legal report granted in 1987 that indicates that the concession was granted for 50 years ‘and plead’ through court battles. The second would be to request an extension which also relies on the Costas. The third option is to adapt to the legislation and renew the concession in 2018.

It will be the members who decide with a democratic vote, and despite a platform accusing the board of censorship and irregularities,

Also discussed was the building of a new 1,000sqm sailing school which would also be in the balance when members come to vote.

Frontline News The Consell of Mallorca and Pollensa Townhall signed an agreement at the beginning of this week confirming that the Consell cedes control of the three roads that make up the frontline in Puerto Pollensa to the municipality of Pollensa. This means that the ‘road’ status will cease and transformed into an urban street. Mayor Miquel Angel March told press that the assignment is the ‘final step’ to execute the progressive pedestrianization of the first line of Puerto Pollensa.

Animals in Action Can Picafort’s veterinary clinic organized a community walk last week with about 100 local dogwalkers for a jaunt along the promenade to the beach of Son Bauló, one of the few ‘pet friendly’ beaches in Mallorca. The young vet, Marina Oliver, was in charge of organizing the event with the intention of raising funds to cover the costs of treatment and operations of stray animals that are performed in the clinic.

Ternelles Latest Local authorities have met with government officials following the announcement that the Supreme Court annulled the TSJB resolution that revoked the right of passage to the coast through the Ternelles Estate. The Government and Townhall of Pollensa announced that the right of passage through the Ternelles estate, which is owned by the March family, will be “guaranteed” while the town’s urban planning is adapted to the Natural Resources Management Plan (PORN) of The Serra de Tramuntana. This process is required following the ruling of the Supreme Court. While the authorities are working on legal technicalities, the right of passage will be upheld by the application of the Law for the Conservation of Environmental Relevant Spaces (LECO), which “allows access to the maritime public domain through the exclusion zones to be authorized on a case-by-case basis.”

Mayor to be Honoured Pere Josep Cànaves Salas, mayor of Pollença who was assassinated by Franco’s fascists in 1938, will have a street in his name in Pollensa.

The idea was put forward by the party Més per Pollença and was unanimously agreed in November 2010. The naming will likely take place in April next year during the celebrations for the Republic, or during the Patrona weeklong fiesta. The street most likely to be named c/ Pere Josep Cànaves Salas is an unnamed road close to the cloister of Sant Domingo.

Pere Josep Cànaves Salas, who was already named Illustrious Son of Pollensa in 2003, took the mayor’s office in February of 1936. After the Francoist coup d’etat, Cànaves was tried along with 147 other Pollencins that had been faithful to The Republic. Five of them were sentenced to death, including the mayor and he was shot in Palma on January 27, 1938.

Gelats Valls Story The restaurant located next to the former Gelats Valls kiosk in Puerto Pollensa has withdrawn its criminal complaint for alleged transgression against the current mayor, Miquel Àngel March and his predecessor, Tomeu Cifre and all members of the government board that in May 2015 authorized the company to maintain its activity. The complainants, who also filed an administrative dispute against the Council for the same reason, alleging that the council favoured Gelats Valls despite the fact that the ice cream makers irregularly occupied a public space. Both March and Cifre were in court in Inca last month to respond to the complaint. The Gelats Valls kiosk no longer occupies its usual space in Puerto Pollensa after the eviction process approved by the City Council.

It was great to see it in action as everyone made an appearance, from the demonis to the Cristianos, from the bunyols to the local wines, from local singing talent to unique dances and fiestas.

Alvarez assured that this year will not be the last bullfight in Muro. The Federation Taurina Balear is preparing a demonstration before the bullfight to “defend the party and our freedom to go wherever we want,” said Alvarez. His party argues that the animal does not suffer during races. Supported by the manager and veterinarian of the cattle ranch Resin Party (his bulls will fight in the corrida de Muro), Jose Luis Algora said that, “the bulls suffer stress during the transfer, but not in the square.” Two bulls from El Onsareño cattle ranching and six from the Partido de Resina will face four bullfighters on June 25.

Alcúdia opened a new first aid facility on the beach in the Ciutat Blanca area last week. Replacing the old outdated facility, this new locale has air conditioning, a resting area for lifesavers and a modernized treatment room. Other improvements included the launch of an ‘anfibuggy’ service for the disabled and a new service for umbrellas and hammocks for people with mobility problems. It has also increased the working hours of lifesvaers, which will be until 19.30 hours during the months of July and August.

On the other hand, the council expressed yesterday

its disagreement with the withdrawal of the beach’s blue flag of the beach claiming that there are not “enough elements” to remove the distinction, stressing that it “has satisfactorily passed quality audits”. Instead, authorities suspect the reason for the withdrawal of the blue flag is the single water analysis, which was carried out on May 10, 2016, just three days after heavy rain.

New Social Welfare Scheme in Alcudia

Last week in Alcudia, local authorities signed with the Mater Misericordiae organization that set plans for a new social welfare scheme. The programmes will see Mater Misericordiae bring training services and employment for people with intellectual disabilities living in Alcudia. It’s hoped that the scheme will improve the employability of people with disabilities, much like the Prodis in Pollensa.

Mater Misericordiae will coordinate with the Social Services office of Alcudia Townhall in order to help the people who need it, with the Townhall as a focal point.

Beach Clean Up Together with the Office for Environment, EMSA, the Townhall in Alcudia, aorund 50 sixth grade students from the Col.legi Nostra Senyora de la Consolació participated in cleaning the beaches of San Juan del Mal Pas, which included the removal of the

New Tourist Office in Puerto Alcudia

Two weeks ago, a brand new Tourist Office located on the Ciutat Blanca area of Puerto Alcudia was opened by local and Consell officials.

Councillor for Tourism, Joan G. Vallori explained the main objective was to improve the service and information of the town and reach tourists directly on the beach.

The Mayor of Alcudia Antoni Mir thanked everyone for working towards making visitors feel comfortable and for working towards the goal of being the best tourist town in Mallorca.

Food & Drink Out & About: The Boat & Anchor

Can Axartell After all the fun of the fira del vi, the story that excited us most was the newest wine development here in the north, Can Axartell located along the Cami Vell de Pollensa. Bought by the Schwarzkopfs (yes, the hair people), the estate originally came with permits to build a hotel and apartments.

Not particularly keen, Herr Schwarzkopf decided on a more eco-project and one that he is passionate about, wine.

The resulting bodega and renovated casa rural (which was in ruins) is a stunning piece of architecture. The bodega was built in an old quarry, a hole in the ground perfect for storing wine and for looking good while it does so. High, cavernous and with spectacular rocky backdrops all around, Can Axartell is impressive.

The Winemaking The winemakers love what they do and they make their wine with a gentle and organic approach. The

‘Metode Gravetat’ means no pumps are used, in fact there is very little machinery at all.

Widely used in modern high end wineries this method is not that common in Spain, less so in Mallorca, certainly not to the extent that Can Axartell uses it. Pumps and machinery inevitably effect the grape that ends up in the bottle. By using gravity the grape literally falls through the process and into the bottle. The resulting wine is in the purest possible state.

During our delivery day, we tend to stop for a coffee and one place that stands out these days is the Boat & Anchor in Puerto Alcudia. This little bar is funky modern, with good food including homemade gourmet burgers and British staples.

Breakfast can come in American panckae style or classic British fry-up and, by all accounts, the evenings are good fun too with live sport on throughout. Run by Darren, the friendly atmosphere makes this a great post-beach stop.

The Wines In general, Can Axartell makes one white, one rose and two red wines each vintage. Some years there could be others, depending on the harvest. The wines are made with various combinations of Merlot, Syrah and Pinot Noir and the indigenous grape Callet in the reds. Manto Negro and Pinot Noir for the rose and Premsal Blanc for the whites.

Indigenous grapes play an important role. The south facing vines are in constant sunshine and, sitting in the

valley of the Tramuntana mountains, they enjoy the seabreeze which gives Can Axartell wines a distinctive quality that are well worth a try.

Still a little-known bodega, with wine tours not yet available to the public (visits will be possible soon), this is the North’s best-kept secret.

1 Can Conill

The main carpark opposite the children’s playground. Entrance on C/Donnes de Can Sales. Complete nightmare on Sundays. If you’re not there before 9am, look elsewhere.

Overspill #1 Located between the cockerel roundabout

Not exactly clear from Google maps, if you take the little path up behind the Renault Garage - opposite the Repsol Petrol Station, you will find go-to carpark number 2. It’s dusty but it’s big. and Plaza Monument, this vast patch of grass is available for parking and is mainly used when the carparks are full.

Enter along the main road, if it happens to be rainy, expect to get muddy.

4 King of carparks

Compared to the rest, this is parking luxury. Spacious, kind of new and complete with electric charging points, this is the carpark of dreams. It’s at the Sports Centre but the walk into the centre is not as bad as it seems, the zebra crossing and footpath will lead you straight into town. Enter on the Ma-2200 or Ma-2202.

Overspill #2

Hidden from view, this might be your last chance before you start hunting for the elusive street parking. On the way to the Joan Mas primary school is a sizeable and dusty carpark. Find the C/de Tito Cittadni and take the second right onto C/de Sor Flor Ricomana.

Keep going onto the little Cami del Cementeri and you will find it on your right.

Alive and Kicking Real Mallorca are heading into the final furlong of the season with their hopes of avoiding relegation to the Spanish Third Division still intact — but only just. After a last gasp win at home to Elche, Mallorca headed to Valladolid with high hopes but they rolled over and surrendered. They now have four games left and are four points adrift from safety. The good news is that three of those four games are at home in Palma and two of them against teams who are in danger of relegation themselves in the shape of Almeria and Numancia. The permutations are endless and enough to keep mathematicians awake for days but three wins and a draw may just be enough although some pundits reckon that four wins are necessary.

The first of the so-called ‘cup finals’ takes place this Saturday 20 May at 7pm against Almeria. The biggest attendance of the season is expected with plenty of pre-match entertainment being planned.

The game at Valladolid last Saturday left the fans feeling bemused. Head coach Sergi named an unchanged team for the third game running and took the squad two days earlier for some bonding. That backfired spectacularly as the Islanders showed little fight until the closing seconds. To be fair, the home side’s opening goal on the half hour was a complete farce. Raul de Tomas, on loan from Real Madrid, exhibited diving skills more often attributed to Jacques Cousteau when challenged in the penalty area by Yuste. Referee Lopez Amaya was completely taken in and awarded a spot kick which de Tomas converted despite Santamaria getting fingertips to the effort. The home side who have aspirations of a play-off place sat back and Mallorca made little impression. True to form the hosts, through de Tomas again, notched a second on the breakaway with ten minutes left. Substitute Lekic got one

back in the dying seconds but there was little else on offer.

A point would have been welcome, but wasn’t deserved or earned.

After the Almeria game Mallorca entertain Numancia the following weekend on Sunday the 28th of May with a 6 pm kick off. If, and it’s a big if , the team can defeat Almeria this will be the biggest game of the season.

Real Mallorca 1-0 Elche After the superb win at Sevilla Athletic the week before this was a lacklustre affair in front of the season’s biggest attendance at the Son Moix Satadium of 13,000 people. The visitors almost took the lead when hitting the post after ten minutes with Santamaria comfortably beaten. The fans were put through the wringer without the team giving them much to shout about. Sergi made a strange but ultimately inspired substitution with ten minutes to go when he sent on defender Ansotegui who is charitably described as corpulent. He was sent up front alongside fellow substitute Lekic and high balls were aimed into the visitors’ penalty area. Route One football in its simplest form but it paid off when with seconds remaining a Culio corner was met by the head of Ansotegui whose effort hit the post. In what appeared to be slow motion Lago Junior reacted the quickest and put the loose ball into the net. There were scenes of delirium and hopes raised of a comeback of biblical proportions after the club appeared doomed a couple of weeks earlier.
