Marina Day at Alcudia Mar Thousands of people visited the open day at Alcudiamar last weekend with about 500 enjoying the free activities that were on offer. At 10am registration for boat trips, sailing, parasailing and other activities opened by 11am, the reservations were full.

Celebrating Marina Day, an initiative of Anade (the Nautical Sport Association of the Balearics), alongside Port Adriano, the aim was to promote nautical activities and marinas in the region.

Alcudiamar hosted a flea market and a marquee with music and food and drink, where there was also a tapas competition.

Joan Crespí, captain of the port, told press that “It is important to attract boating fans; nautical tourism has a promising future for our community attracting a type of tourist with high purchasing power who enjoy exploring the places they travel to.”

Local News Can Picafort Refuse The party Can Picafort Unit (CPU) has denounced the proliferation of rubbish in the streets of the coastal town, which is a result of the new system of selective collection applied by the council.

The political formation claims that the containers are “insufficient” to meet the demand and criticizes the “careless and dirty image” of the town just as thousands of tourists arrive for their holiday.

In his defence, Mayor Joan Monjo (El Pi) responded saying that the company that took over waste disposal 6 months ago has placed more bins in the town, from 340 1,200L containers to about 600-800. He claims that the problems are due to irresponsible residents and added that the police will be increasing surveillance.

Putting the May-Corbyn fight behind us, this kind of campaigning is more fun but just as passionate and, come election night, it usually involves a bit of mesclat.

This year, the parade has dipped its toe into the millennium as for the first time a girl, Marta Llobera, will be the flag bearer for the Ajuntament Vella section.

Another girl, Joana Maria Bisanyes, will also be part of the march.

According to Punt Informatiu, there are still spaces in the parade for children between 125cm145cm tall and they live here you could apply for them to be in the parade.

Corpus Christi Lamb Campanet Terraces Repreive?

Alternativa per Pollença has called for the lamb to be taken out of the parade Corpus Christi. As the picture on the front cover shows, the day is celebrated with the dance of the Eagles and Sant Joan Pelós, who carries a lamb. During the two-hour procession, the animal is immobilized with his legs tied together inside a bag in case it defecates. The political party says that the animal suffers unnecessarily and for that reason requested in the last plenary that the presence of the lamb is withdrawn during the procession. The dance of the eagles is on Sunday 18th – the first Sunday after Corpus Christi.

The Townhall in Campanet has approved new regulation, which will be put in place this summer, regarding the use of the Plaza Major by the surrounding bars.

With the new rules, each establishment will be assigned the same space for chairs and tables and the furniture must meet certain standards.

What’s more the cafes and bars are responsible for cleaning up the area they occupy. When the terrace is not being used, the chairs and tables are to be cleared away and they can only use furniture approved by the council. The authorities also reserve the right to use the terraces on certain days, if they are needed for an event.

The new regulation came about after a number of the complaints from neighbours who complained that there was no free space in the square for public use.

Drugs Bust in the North It’s not often you hear sirens in this part of the island, especially Guardia Civil sirens, but one morning a couple of weeks ago the roads were swarming with police activity. News quickly broke of the drugs bust across Pollensa, Puerto Pollensa and Puerto Alcudia, which saw multiple arrests and houses raided. One house was just next to the Costa I Llobera primary school in Pollensa where police found a backpack filled with €70,000 in cash.

Early on a Wednesday morning, 50 agents, coordinated by Pollensa’s Judicial Police, broke into five houses and dismantled four ‘outlets’. The investigation goes back several months, when police officers were informed that cocaine and hashish were being distributed in Pollensa and Alcudia, through a ‘retail’ system.

The investigation, which included tapped phones, concluded that the drug network was run by a group of Spaniards and Moroccans.

Of the early morning raids, the one by the school was the most striking because of the amount of cash found. This was counted and passed to the courts.

In Pollensa and Alcudia, the drug dealing had created discomfort among neighbours, who complained that many addicts called

the wrong door and called another, sometimes in the early hours of the morning.

Can Picafort Parking Problems The mayor of Santa Margalida, Joan Monjo, has ordered stricter regulations on car rental companies.

Focussing on can Picafort any rental company with more than three vehicles parked on the street will be fined.

According to Monjo, in Can Picafort there is a “big problem” with the lack of public parking, caused in part by rental cars that are left on the public road. This, along with the proliferation of vehicles the creation of pedestrian zones, as well as the lack of parking in the hotels, has meant a huge shortage of public parking.

Heat Wave Yellow Alert The State Meteorological Agency has decreed a yellow alert for the heatwave in Mallorca. The extreme temperatures, higher than usual at this time of year, have already reached 36 degrees in Palma, 32 in Lluc and 27 in Portocolom. According to the report of the AEMET, the atmospheric conditions are marked by intense insolation which causes overheating of stationary air. This will remain until the beginning of next week, with no change in air mass. From Thursday 15 to Sunday 18 the southwestern corner of Spain will be affected and temperatures are expected to reach 40 degrees.

Take extreme caution, stay out of the sun between 125pm, drink plenty of water and wear a hat.

Ironkids Fundraising Success

If again, like me, you were saddened by the news of RCD Mallorca’s descent to the Segunda B league, then head to page 9 where you can see the cheery news about Alcudia’s football team. Local league it may be, the irony that they have been promoted is not lost on me.

Beach Accessibility in P.Pollensa The council of Pollensa presented their new Universal Accessibility Centre this week. The service, which is installed on the beach of Tamarells, will help those with reduced mobility enjoy the beach and the sea and includes all the equipment necessary. Specialised personnel will work in collaboration with the rescue services to make the

beach completely accessible.

Equipment includes amphibious chairs for both children and adults, lifting apparatus, adapted hammock, amphibious crutches, first aid groups among other things.

The centre, which will be in operation for five months per year, aims to help anyone use the service on an equal footing, regardless of physical, mental or sensory ability.

The Townhall of Alcudia hosted a ceremony last week that saw a cheque for €1,400 handed to the Smile for Chernobyl charity. The money was raised at the Ironkids event on May 12th.

Representatives from the Townhall, Ironman and the NGO were present.

The money raised will go towards children who have been affected by the disaster of Chernobyl nuclear power plant. The NGO brings a handful of children from the area to Mallorca every year.

This year’s Pollensa Festival has a programme of eight concerts throughout the month of August and will be held as normal at the Claustre de Santo Domingo in the Old Town. The festival will not disappoint with internationally renowned ensembles and their display of extraordinary musical talent.

At last week’s press conference, Mayor of Pollensa, Miquel Àngel March, highlighted the objectives which were to go “back to basics with a classics festival and an artistic direction from a technical committee.” For the first time, the direction of Pollença Festival has been assumed by a technical advisory committee that have worked to meet different musical sensibilities, and to share and discuss annual programmes and define a long-term project.

This committee is made up of musicians and teachers, backed up by knowledge and experience. Joan Campomar explained that the committee will always seek a balance between the different eras and styles. “Festival Pollensa

must offer the whole range of classical music, from ancient to contemporary.”

The 2017 edition has one concert more than in past years and it will be held throughout August with concerts every Wednesday and Saturday.

Higlights include the inaugural concert from the Gabrieli Consort; the Balearic Symphony Orchestra with three soloists, Julian Rachlin (violin), Misha Maisky (cello) and Itamar Golan (Piano); the Musiciens du Louvre, a French group with a wide operatic and symphonic repertoire; and the closing concert by Christoph Pregardien—one of the best tenors of today, accompanied by the pianist Julius Drake. The Mayor also said that “an important aim of this new phase is to bring the festival to the people and no longer kept as an elitist event.” A public presentation of the festival open to

the public was held in the courtyard of Can Llobera and activities have been scheduled in schools across the town to present the festival.

Lighting and acoustics will also be improved with an elliptical staging area that will accommodate both small ensembles and larger orchestras. Keep an eye on the What’s On pages in upcoming issues of TOTN.

The big question now is whether the Prime Minister will be able to go ahead with a “hard Brexit”, or whether ministers will now demand a softer Brexit policy. This could mean that Britain keeps access to the Europe’s single market and so remains part of the European Economic Area (EEA).

Either way, the important issue of citizens’ rights is expected to be tackled early in the talks and Theresa May and her ministers have been consistent in saying that they will seek to protect the rights of UK nationals living in the EU. Specifically, they have stated that they are in favour of allowing EU nationals already living in the UK to remain, provided they receive the same guarantees for UK citizens living in Europe.

Speaking on BBC radio, Mr Davies said he hoped a deal regarding this issue could be swiftly reached once the talks start; “You have people worrying here in Britain that they can’t stay here, you have Brits living in Spain worrying they will not be able to stay there. The worries are unnecessary and they shouldn’t have them but we want make sure they are dealt with as soon as possible.”

The EU has also made clear that this should be a priority due to the number of people affected and how serious the consequences of the withdrawal could be for them. Both sides appear to broadly agree that Britons living in the EU and EU citizens living in the UK should keep their rights to residence, work and health care after Brexit.

It may be some time before anything tangible is formally agreed. The UK Election, Brexit and Us The UK election result was somewhat surprising, no single party reached an overall majority, leaving Theresa May to seek support from the Democratic Unionist Party which (just) gives her an overall majority. Debate and political challenges will ensue but interestingly, in her statement in Downing Street on 9th June, May stressed that Brexit negotiations will continue as planned. On Monday 12th, Brexit Minister David Davies said that the first Brexit discussions should start next week, though this may not be on Monday 19th June as planned.

Local Art Biennal d’Art

As the Festival of Pollensa is about to hold it’s 56th edition, it also marks the 56th anniversary of Pollensa’s Museum opening. While the town is rich in art, when the museum opened there was not enough to decorate and stock the new facility. So, in response, the directors began an art competition open to local artists. In the beginning, it was a local competition and there were prizes to be won.

These days, the competition is an international affair and cash prizes are still handed out. As well, the prize is to be exhibited meaning the museum has a great collection of modern art from all over the world.

Now a biennial event, this year’s theme was landscapes that could be seen from any reading, both in style and concept. The artist was free to choose technique, medium and presentation.

From the 170 artists who entered this year’s competition, a shortlist of 13 entries has just been announced. The winner and runners up will be announced when the exhibition opens in the coming weeks. In the meantime, head to the museum to see some past entries. www.facebook.com/ museupollenca

IV Sports Gala in Alcudia Last Thursday afternoon the Sports Gala of Alcudia was celebrated at the Auditorium. Awards were given to outstanding athletes and clubs in various sports with the merits obtained in the year 2016. It was also an opportunity to award three sportsmen from Alcudia.

who had families and friends in the audience.

Sports Councillor, Joaquín Cantalapiedra, noted the increase in sport, acknowledging the work

of the board for grassroots sports and activities designed for adults, and congratulated all the outstanding athletes and sports clubs that represent the town.

Football Success in Alcudia Alcudia’s Townhall held a special reception last weekend for the first team of UE Alcudia after a superb season that saw the team climb up from third division to Segunda B. The Cadet team also had a good season and became champions of their group.

The Mayor, Antoni Mir and two of his fellow councillors met with members of the UE Alcúdia team management, including President Toni Ruiz, the coaches and all the players of both teams.

In his speech, the mayor told the attendees that he felt honoured and acknowledged the sacrifice they’ve made to be part of a great club, with time and dedication on the part of managers, coaches and players. He congratulated the “super, super, super” cadets who became champions of the group and fight for the championship. As for the first team, they were congratulated for their performance in the play-offs that brought their promotion to the Second B division.

The Mallorquinista Down & Out

Real Mallorca were relegated to the Spanish Third Division (known as Segunda B) after only drawing their penultimate game of the season away at Mirandes on the 4th of June 2017. This will be the first time in thirty six years that the club will be playing at that level. The ramifications have yet to be assessed but the stark reality is that huge redundancies in the non-playing staff are inevitable.

The current staff number seventy and some sources are predicting that this will be reduced to just twelve. The revenue will be drastically reduced as there is no television income in the Third Division and attendances (and ticket prices) will fall substantially. The clubs in this league are semi-professional and negotiations will be taking place before the end of June to rescind players contracts. Loan players Angelino, Sasha, Juan Rodriguez, Saul Garcia, Pleguezuelo and Juan Culio will be returning to their parent clubs. No less than ten will be out of contract including captain Hector Yuste and Joan Oriol. Five have one year left and three have two years. Brandon Thomas falls into the first category and Lago Junior the second. They are the only saleable assets and clubs in higher divisions will take advantage to pay less than their current values.

Another knock on effect is that the Mallorca B team who currently occupy a mid table place in the Third Division will be automatically relegated as clubs are not allowed to have more than one team in any league. There are some promising youngsters in that team and they may well form the backbone of the first team.

The fans have been taking to social media and the subject of their anger has been Chief Executive Moheta Molango and Director of Football Javier Reccio. They have been widely blamed for not recruiting two proven goalscorers at the start of the season. They gave a joint press conference last week and both stated that they intend to carry on in their positions although it is doubtful if their positions are tenable. Head Coach Sergi Bajuan is very unlikely to continue and in all honesty he hardly impressed with his impassive demeanour.

One reliable source is suggesting that former Mallorca player Gustavo Siviero is in the frame to be the new head coach.

He was a particular favourite of the fans during his playing career and has had considerable experience of coaching in the Third Division. He was brought to the club in 1998 by fellow Argentinan Hector Cuper who is probably the best coach Mallorca have ever had. Cuper is now the manager of the Egyptian national team and he issued a rallying cry to the fans this week. His message was simply to forget any recriminations and get behind the team in the new era... Wise words. In coming editions we will be viewing in more detail the Third Division and Real Mallorca’s chances of getting back into Segunda A.

The visitors were two nil down against already relegated Mirandes at half time and despite goals from Culio and Lekic they went down with a whimper.

The visitors needed a point to secure a play off place and got it. Brandon scored two goals and the other was an own goal.

The result was meaningless but the atmosphere was toxic with continuous demonstrations before during and after the game aimed at the players and hierarchy. A very sad way to end the season.
