The commercial platforms that advertise tourist apartments have two weeks to adapt to the new Balearic tourist regulations. At a press conference, together with the Director General of Tourism, Pilar Carbonell and technical advisor Antoni Sansó, Vice President and Minister for Tourism Biel Barcelo explained that if the platforms do not adapt to the new law, which came into force last week, they can be sanctioned with fines that range from €40,000 up to €400,000.

Local News Going forward, the new law allows the councils of each Balearic island and the City Council of Palma to decide whether to allow tourist rent in apartments, for how long and in which areas. The councils have a year to agree on how they will proceed but it is expected that the ban will be maintained.

The Ministry of Tourism has set up an email for residents to denounce other owners who rent their apartments, which means that no denuncias are made anonymously.

In practical terms, any apartment owner who rents to a tourist for less than 30 days, without a lease and without the visitor having paid a deposit, is acting illegally and is exposed to a fine. The owner must provide documentation that the activity is legal. It is easy to verify for tourists as any apartment that is rented legally has an identification number that endorses the tourist rental permit.

The law allows houses (rustic or townhouses) to be rented to holiday-makers as long as they have the license from the Ministry of Tourism.

Alongside these rules, moves have been made to oblige “large holders” of property — that is an entity that owns ten or more empty or unused properties — to make the property available.

In the midst of the controversy, the government has also announced plans to help tenants in need with rent subsidies, mainly for large families, people with disabilities, victims of domestic violence and victims of terrorism. Also, 700 new affordable homes under the control of the administration have been promised.

Purified Water in Alcúdia Hotels Built in Alcúdia in 2010 at a cost of €1.5m, Mallorca’s most ambitious purified water network has never actually come to fruition. The project, a pioneering one on the island, saw an extensive network of pipes to connect the town’s water supply with the tourist plant with the idea of using the resulting purified water for the toilets and garden irrigation. Many hotels relied on the model and adapted their infrastructure, but the purified water never flowed through their pipes.

The problem, which was not considered at the time, is the leakage of salt water into the sewerage network, meaning the water that arrives at the purifier has a high level of salinity. The system purifies the water, but does not remove the salt.

Ultimately, for sanitary and environmental reasons, the purified water cannot be used.

No the council of Alcúdia has requested that the Government use part of the funds collected through the Sustainable Tourism Tax to finance the €800,000 needed to reform the sewage system of the southern area of Alcúdia in order to stop salt water entering the system.

The project of the Alcúdia hotel plant to the tertiary sewage plant cost a total of €4.5m. It was expected to supply purified water to 15,000 hotel beds reducing water consumption by 3050% in the municipality.

Bee Aware(ness) Alcudia is adopting new measures to deal with managing bees when they

become a problem in the town. When an annoying swarm settles in a building or an inconvenient place, the usual way to handle it is to call the firemen. They capture them in a box, if they can, or in the most dangerous or difficult cases an insecticide spray ends the problem.

Now the Natura Parc Foundation has started a swarm rescue service, where the bees are moved without being killed. Last week David Llompart, bee-catching expert, held a demonstration over 10m high on the façade of the church of Sant Jaume in Alcudia. For a while two swarms have colonized cracks in the old building and Llompart employed a technique to move them without causing any harm.

First he placed a mesh funnel in each crack sealing other possible exits. “The bees go out looking for food but then they do not know how to re-enter through the mesh funnel,” he explains. Next to this funnel is an artificial hive containing either a queen or eggs. The worker bees colonize the new ‘hive’, which can then be moved to another place where it doesn’t cause any problems.

Antoni Mir, mayor of Alcudia, attended the rescue and told press that “it may be more laborious because the artificial beehive has to be hung for 20 days, but it is much better because it is necessary to preserve the bees for their ecological value.”

New School in Alcudia: Update Last week, the Minister of Education and University, Martí March, presented in the new Infantil and Primaria school projects to the council in Alcudia. Shortly after, he met with the mayor of Santa

Margalida, Joan Monjo, to discuss the possibility of building another school in Can Picafort.

As reported in TOTN, in May an agreement between Government and Local Council was signed for the financing and execution of the new CEIP, which will have six units for Infants and twelve for Primary. In all they will host 450 students.

The presentation to various officials followed the explanations of the architect responsible for the project, Guillem Quetglas. The estimated budget is around €4.3m and will take around 14 months once work has begun.

Conseller March also met with the mayor of Santa Margalida, who has requested a new school in Can Picafort. The City Hall has a plot of 6,000sqm, which they acquired in 2013 for €480,000.

Goat Danger Mayors from the north have called for action regarding the wild goats of the Serra de Tramuntana that are coming down the mountains in search of water, food and cooler temperatures. These goats create serious problems in the roads and have already caused some accidents.

They also cause damage to agriculture and property.

Miquel Àngel March, mayor of Pollensa, who has been president of the GOB, said “the problem is serious... they represent a danger to the flora Autochthonous and can mean the extinction of very fragile species of our mountains…” he also noted that in Puerto Pollensa, “they come down to the Boquer area for food bins.” They also cause problems in Formentor.

Giant Paella from the AVPP

Last week, the Neighborhood Association of the Puerto Pollensa (AVPP) served a giant paella for the community, a total of 900 people attended. They used the occasion to deliver the €900 cheque to the Spanish Association Against Cancer (AECC), that was raised at the V Marinera Race at the beginning of July. The runners contributed €1 euro at registration.

“120kg of bomba rice, 75kg of fish, 40kg of gerret [local fish], 60kg of mussels, 40kg of prawns, 60kg of monkfish, with the spinach and the head we make the broth and we put in the rice. We made rice for 900 people but it is a unique dish and many came back for more.” José Manuel Pareja, who, along with Andreu Ramon Pérez de Rada, was in charge of organizing the meal that is

served every August by the members of the association.

The lunch was held in the Plaza Joan Cerdà, in front of the universal access centre AVPP has built on the Tamarells beach. “The Arrosada is possible thanks to the work of some fifty people,” says Pareja, “Also because among us are elite cooks, Llorenç Cerdà Nadal `Picarol’ and Sebastià Torrens Bauzá, as well as with Joan Ferriol, who make one of the best summer rice dishes.”

Originally started in 1984, it was organized by 32 fisherman of the local brotherhood or confraria, the event proved so popular that they needed more help, eventually the AVPP took it over in 1999.

Archaeology Course in Alcudia At the Casal de Can Doménech, diplomas were awarded to students who completed the latest archaeology course during the month of July at Pol. lèntia. It marked the end of the course, but also the completion of work by volunteers, local collaborators, and students and archaeologists from the University of Portland. The

110 participants in the 2017 excavation campaign were acknowledged as well as local companies that helped with the organization and logistics of the students’ stay.

At the end of last month, a hundred people attended the Open Day at the site during the Fiesta of Sant Jaume, who were given a guided tour of the work carried out this summer. On July 20 Students of the Arqueospain programme were awarded their diplomas.

the residential neighborhood of Sa Portella, the forum and the necropolis. In each area, discoveries will help lead to a greater understanding of the history and evolution of the Roman city.

The geophysical surveys that began two years ago, will continue and allow further study into the perimeter of the city. In fact, this year the team of archaeologists has started a new study to clarify whether there was a pre-existing military camp.

This study will continue in the coming years and could solve the historical problem of dating the ancient city.

Written sources mark as the founding date of Pol·lèntia in 123 BC, while the archaeological remains date back to 70 BC at most.

Making your home greener here in Mallorca is a little bit easier and a little cheaper thanks to government subsidies for the installation of solar panels. The grant is 50% of the cost for individuals, with a maximum of 1,500 € per kWp installed.

The subsidy is valid for homes connected to the grid as well as unconnected and the deadline is 30th August.

If form filling and document finding is not your thing, read the following with an open mind and remember that getting solar panels on your Mallorcan home can only be a good thing – renewable energy is, after all, the future. In a nutshell, a successful application process will follow these steps: ☀☀ Apply for a grant before any work is carried out – deadline 30 August ☀☀ The Administration will send acceptance and indicate the amount you will receive ☀☀ Complete the installation and send proof of payment to the administration – deadline 17 November ☀☀ The administration will pay the agreed amount into your bank account Sounds good so far. The forms are relatively simple and a good Spanish friend can help you if your not sure of the language. Your solar panel supplier will also be able to help. The one hurdle is getting an electricity company to respond in a timely fashion and agree to the connection. However, just the proof of request is all you need for the application. Also, ask your solar panel supplier who might be able to help you with this. Invariably they will have contacts who are well versed in the process and know who best to deal with. It seems that the move to solar energy is a little behind when compared with the UK, especially given how much sun there is in Spain, but the renewable energy industry is optimistic that it is moving in the right direction and in the long run getting solar panels will help you cut costs. Tolo Marqués Planas of Totsol told TOTN that, “it may seem complicated but the direction is clear. This is the future of energy in Spain.” He continued, “Having solar panels in your home makes you much more aware of your consumption and just by being in control of it, you can cut consumption considerably.”

In terms of installation cost, it is very hard to make a guess.

Tolo told TOTN that he has to make an individual study of each house and the family’s consumption, only then can he install the right-sized panels with the right system. With batteries in place, if you use 100% of the power stored then it is cost-effective. It may be a few years until you make the money back, however, the law will soon catch up and in time it will take fewer years to make the return.

Angel Flukes Joins Michael Bolton Angel Flukes, the most recent winner of the TV talent show Das Supertalent (the German version of Britain’s Got Talent) will be on the stage at Son Fusteret in Palma this Saturday evening when she supports the international performer Michael Bolton on the Mallorca leg of his worldwide tour.

“I’m really looking forward to it,” said Angel, “it’s an honour to share the same stage with Michael Bolton, he’s a legend!”

Angel was born in the UK but has lived and worked in Mallorca for several years. She got her big break when her talent was noticed by Marion and Danny, the owners of Krumells Stadl, a bar in Peguera. They encouraged her to enter the TV singing competition. Angel learnt German in order to go on the show and stormed through to the finale after taking the roof off with her version of Leona Lewis’ ‘Run’, and then topped that off by taking home the trophy after a stunning rendition of Celine Dion’s ‘Think Twice’.

As part of her victory, Angel won the chance to sing in Las Vegas, and a recording contract. She turned the contract down and instead has recorded some original tracks by producer and songwriter OD Hunte. She and her manager Roland are currently in discussions with record companies in the UK. She did go to Vegas and performed in The Legends show at the Flamingo Hotel which is directly opposite Caesar’s Palace on the strip.

Angel lives in Calvia with her fiance Lee, and her three dogs. She was recently spotted on the red carpet at the Marcel Remus Lifestyle party at the Llaut Palace Hotel in Playa de Palma. Although she’s a power ballad diva, it’s not with a big “D”. She has no plans to move away from the island which she adores.

“I love living in Majorca. I’ll commute as I need, but my home is most definitely here with my animals and Lee. We all love it”.

The Mallorquinista Ready for the Off

Real Mallorca play their final pre-season game this Saturday 12 August when they entertain Sevilla Athletic in the City of Palma Trophy at 7.30pm. The opponents are the B-team of Sevilla and before the match the first team squad will be presented to the fans. With virtually a new team on display, new head coach Vicente Moreno will be hoping that his charges make a good impression on the Son Moix Stadium faithful. The opposition is of necessity a lower standard than has been on display in the past. Top Italian and German teams have visited in the past to contest the Trophy when Mallorca were in La Liga. Even though the club spent the last four seasons in Segunda B Premiership outfit, West Bromwich Albion arrived on the holiday island last August to take part.

The club have won all five of their pre-season games to date with local side Constancia from Inca being defeated 2-0 with goals from Reyna and Cedric. Sadly there was crowd trouble and the Guardia Civil were called to calm things down. Formentera hosted Mallorca and the visitors were comfortable 4-0 winners with a hat-trick from Cedric and another from Lago Junior. A visit to Majadahonda in Madrid saw Mallorca win 3-2 with two from Cedric and Lago again on the scoresheet. The final game at Toledo was a 1-0 victory with Lago scoring in the first half.

Young striker Cedric looks like he could take on the mantle of a prolific scorer if he can remain fit. He has had a number of injury issues over the last two seasons as a B-team player but looks strong and fit now.

The first game of the league season is away at Peralada on the 20 August with a home game against Pena Deportivo on the 27th with a 12-noon kick off. The first derby is away at Athletic Balears on the 3 September which is a mouth watering prospect for both sets of fans.
