Down Urban Back in Town

Now in its fourth year, Down Urban Pollensa will be the Balearic Championships and has attracted some great cyclists, notably the Jorba Brothers. Two of the four, Guillem and Ignasi are world cup racers and the best at national level in their categories. They will be taking

part and promise a great display of downhill cycling prowess. Many local businesses are getting involved with plenty of prizes to be won. Practice runs will be all morning, the main event will be from 4-7pm, this Saturday 9 September.

A recent article from the Citizens Advice Spain came with a call to action. While the EU and the UK are negotiating residency rights, the organization has been trying to strike some dialogue with no response from the British side.

Concerns are with the principle of reciprocity and the insistence from the UK that EU nationals have to apply for ‘settled status’. We would be obliged to do this in Spain even though we have premanent residence status after 5 years, or 3 if we work here. Citizens Advice Spain is sending an open letter to let our voices be heard on the matter.

Local News Alcudia and the Budget Law At a press conference last week, the mayor of Alcúdia, Antoni Mir highlighted the situation the council faces with some basic services in crisis while it has €56m in the bank, with no authority to spend it, “it does not make sense that having €56m in the bank that we are not allowed to invest in essential works such as: sewerage in the neighbourhood of Manresa, a municipal warehouse despite having space in the industrial estate, a new Police Station between Alcúdia and the Port, an increase of the staff to give more service...”.

He went on to explain that he had sent a letter to Cristóbal Montoro of the Ministry of Finance that stated the situation and the need to modify the Law of Budgetary Stability so that “healthy municipalities can invest their surplus.”

After a month with no reply, the mayor is proposing a platform of municipalities that are in the same situation to protest against the government. Mir wants that platform to meet with all the state leaders “to be imposed in Madrid as the PP does not have an absolute majority and force him to change this unfair law.”

Alcúdia has experienced growth, which calls for services to be adapted. In 2001, the town’s population was 12,942. In just five years this has increased by 53% and the municipal register of 2016 indicates that there are 19,763 people living in Alcudia. Furthermore, in the summer season, estimates put the population at a whopping 90,000.

This causes other demands to rise as, for example, work

records went from 60 in 2001 to 275 last year, an increase of 358%. Noting that the town has only one architect three days a week to report those files, the mayor is clearly concerned. He added that the situation is “very precarious because the council has only 13 workers to carry out the maintenance of the town when in fact we would need double and we are not allowed to hire them.”

Bar Bonys The terrace story is not a new one, Alcudia had their crisis in the Old Town a season or two ago. Now Puerto Pollensa has its own version.

Much has been said about the restriction of seating at Bar Bonys in the square in Puerto Pollensa. In fact, so much was said that TOTN went straight to the council to find out what went on and why. Quite simply the Ordinance on Occupancy of the Public Way was passed in 2002 and Bar Bonys was informed in 2015 that the bar exceeded the permitted tables on the square. In 2016, at the beginning of the season, he was informed that he would have to comply with the ordinance as all the other bars and restaurants in town. On both sides, all was amicable. It was just a law being enforced.

Bar Bonys is allowed 64 chairs on its terrace. In recent police checks the bar had roughly triple the authorized amount (over 180). The owner was asked to remove them or else the police would have to do so. But, what is key in this case is that the Council didn’t ban tables and chairs, nor did it close the premises.

Furthermore, there were no complaints from Grupo Boulevard or any other local business. The action of the council was, according to

Tomeu Cifre Bennassar, “not to harm Bar Bonys, but simply enforce the regulations as it has done with all premises in the town.” He added that “The legislation was approved in 2002 and is nothing new. The decision that Bar Bonys and all the premises of the town complied with the regulations was a commitment of the whole government team and a legal obligation, otherwise it could be a crime of prevarication by municipal officials.”

Bar Bonys is clearly extremely popular. Visitors to the port return there year after year and it is a place as much for children as it is their parents who enjoy dinner, drinks and cocktails from Happy Hour onwards. The good news is that this is not going to stop.

Bar Bonys goes on, just a little bit smaller than before but of course, with the same smile.

Official Visit in Pollensa The President of the Government, Francina Armengol, visited Pollensa last week and met with local officials and businesses. One of which was the new head of the military aerodrome of Pollensa, Miguel Angel Falla Piñero. The new military command has been in Mallorca for more than a decade and has extensive experience of international missions. He was head of the Squadron 801 of the Air Force on the base of Son Sant Joan.

President Armengol also visited Teixits Vicens and had a guided tour of the factory where the “robes de llengües” is made. She used the occasion to announce the Government’s commitment to promote local businesses and artisan companies, stressing that they represent an added value for the economy.

Armengol also highlighted the quality of the product and praised the company for the quality jobs they create.

Parking at Playa de Muro Carpark saturation along the stretch of the Arta road that crossed the Play de Muro area is causing great concern even for the neighbouring authorities in Santa Margalida, whose mayor Joan Monjo stated it “is a serious danger that seems won’t be fixed until a misfortune occurs.” The road runs in front of the natural park es Comú, whose virgin beaches attract many visitors.

The small neighbourhood of the Ses Casetes dels Capellans (Muro) and the first streets of Can Picafort (Santa Margalida) are the only place where visitors can park to visit the beaches.

In response to residents of ses Casetes dels Capellans, the Council of Muro, has placed billboards at the entrance stopping any cars from entering. Neighbours insist that “they are only placed when the parking lot is full” and lately they have been used. However this means that more people are parking on the road, filling them with cars and people cross continuously. A real danger on such a busy road.

Martí Fornés, mayor of Muro, shares his neighbour’s opinion and explains “Capellans has to close when it is full otherwise there is chaos.” He added, “parking on the road is strictly forbidden. The management of the natural park posted posters every 200 meters at the beginning of the year to further strengthen the ban, but it is not respected.” But it is the continued on Page 3

Back To School The town councils are announcing their adult education courses ready to start in October. Pollensa has published their list and as usual there is the Castella per a Estrangers – Spanish for Foreigners. Having heard great things about the

course in the past, it is well worth a try. Also on offer is beginners Catalan starting at A1 level. Language is the first way to integrate with the community you live in, so give it a go. Register this month at the Town Hall to start the course in October.

Food & Drink Macia Batle, Carbonic Maceration, Blanc 2016 Carbonic maceration is a very different form of fermentation whereby the grapes are usually kept in their whole bunches and covered in a layer of carbon dioxide, starting an anaerobic fermentation. This in effect means that the juice inside the grapes starts fermenting before they are even crushed. This is a relatively unfashionable form of winemaking that results in rather simple, juicy red wines for early drinking, most commonly used in the region of Beaujolais. Macià Batle have been making a red in this way, and more curiously a white. The red is passable to be honest, but the white is far more interesting. Using the local Prensal Blanc grape, the style is bright, a little oily but polished with confectionary notes of pear drops and some white flowers.

It’s really very pleasant and has its own individual character.

One thing Macià Batle does very well is labelling, and each vintage a different artist produces a label for the red and the white. At around €11/€12 it’s worth trying a bottle.

Out & About Cala Figuera A day out in the south offers an unexpected break from the crowds. The beautiful fishing village and nearby natural park complete with paradise beaches could be just what you need after a busy season.

Walking around Cala Figuera you’ll pass fisherman tending their nets with fishing boats to one side, cottages to the other. So close are these houses to the water, that each of them has their own ‘garage’ where the water laps at the door giving easy access for boats when it’s time to get them out of the water. Stepping stones or just jumping over these watery ‘driveways’ are all part of the charm and add to the atmosphere of what is a traditional working fishing port. The packed-out resort beaches are a world away, you could even mistake this for a quaint Cornish village.

The local fisherman who live here have special permission to fish in the Mondrago Natural Park and so unsurprisingly, Cala Figuera has some great seafood

restaurants along its shores.

After lunch a stroll along the cliff path gives more stunning views of the seascape and all its drama.

There are just 577 permanent residences in the town, which rises in the peak season as the surrounding mansions are filled with the second home owners. But, even on an August afternoon, the town was not crowded. The answer for this is surely the lack of a beach and good swimming areas but that has helped keep Cala Figuera largely untouched by the mass tourism movement.

After a walk around the port of Figuera, a short drive out of town will take you to the signposted turning for Cala s’Amarador, a glorious paradise beach in the Mondragó Natural Park. Mondragó became a natural park in 1992 after demonstrations against mass tourism prevented a resort being built. Once parked (€5 per day, all money goes to charity), a walk through a beautiful forested area will lead you to the first beach.

S’Amarador is 160m long and 50m wide. The sand is fine,

the water turquoise. This is genuine postcard material.

If you tire of this beach, a cliff path to the left will lead you to Sa Font de n’Alis. It’s also part of the park but there is a pretty restaurant and small hotel. Further on is another beach on the edge of the park, Calo des Burgit. Much smaller and more difficult to get to, the unspoilt beach surrounded by a pine grove and low cliffs is a worthy reward.

The Mallorquinista Honours Even

The Palma derby between Atlético Baleares and Real Mallorca ended in a nil-nil draw last Saturday. Fans of every club throughout the world will tell you that their derby is more intense and has more history than any other. Certainly the ATB fans have been looking forward to this fixture as it is the first time in 37 years, or 11,251 days to be precise, that the teams have played each other. During that time Mallorca have always been in leagues above their neighbours. The game was played at the tiny Son Malferit stadium in front of a capacity crowd of 2,000 with the visitors being allocated 200 tickets. The artificial pitch was a leveller and the first half was devoid of incident with neither side able to display the capability of trapping a bag of cement. The second half sprung into life after 7 minutes when home striker Gerard Oliva was sent off. He was booked for a horror challenge on Mallorca’s goalkeeper Reina and proceeded to protest to such an extent that the referee produced a second yellow and off he went, eventually, after protests from his team mates. The head coach of ATB, Armando de la Morena was then banished to the stand for his reaction. In reality, this is a distance of about 10 meters so it was hardly a punishment.

Mallorca were unable to make their numerical advantage count and had only one opportunity when Cedric had a great chance but placed his shot wide of the goal. The match was available on IB3 Television who will now broadcast all of Mallorca’s away games which is great news. Head coach Moreno felt that the players were affected by the occasion but was disappointed that his team could not defeat opponents who were reduced to ten men for virtually the whole of the second half. He was very pleased that after 3 games the team have not conceded a goal and have 7 points on the board. This is exactly the start that was needed.

by Charles Nutter In the last days of the transfer window Mallorca brought in two new players to the squad. One of those was Salva Sevilla from Espanyol. This was certainly a surprise as he is now 33 years old and injury prone. He is a very talented midfield player who has played in La Liga throughout his career. The other arrival was Ferran Giner, 28, a hard working winger from Nastic. As the squad had already reached the permitted limit in terms of numbers Jony Niguez has his contract rescinded and he moved to UCAM Murcia. Nestor Salinas has gone to Ponferradina on loan. Both players arrived earlier this summer and neither has played one minute of competitive football during their brief sojourn on the holiday island.

The number of season ticket holders is now over 8,000 and the club have opened up sections of the Tribuna Sol (the open side) which has gone down extremely well with those fans who had previously held tickets on that side and they can now go back to their favourite vantage point.

The next home game is next Sunday 10 September against Atlético Saguntino with a 12 noon kick off followed by a game on 17 September at Ontinyent.

Real Mallorca 1-0 Peña Deportiva The visitors from Ibiza came for a point. Lago Junior scored on 51 minutes and second half cameos from Bryan Reyna and Abdon Prats were the highlights on a very hot and humid night in Palma with the referee calling for water breaks midway through each half.
