Karen

VOLD
From riding along Phoenix’s canal banks to dazzling crowds in arenas across North America, Karen Vold has spent a lifetime shaping the art of trick riding.
Inspired as a child by rodeo performers visiting her home, she launched her professional career at age 14 and later performed in Prescott at 18. Karen went on to co-found professional trick-riding acts and eventually a school that continues to thrive 37 years later. Though she humbly credits others, her behind-the-scenes work and commitment to preserving tradition have made her a true icon in the rodeo world.
Karen’s journey began with a childhood fascination, sparked by trick riders who visited her family’s home when her father, a rodeo chairman during wartime, would host entertainers. By age 10, she had a trick riding saddle, a spirited stallion, and a fire to perform. She entered her first professional rodeo at just 14 and eventually performed at Prescott Rodeo by 18. Along the way, she trained under world champion Dick Griffith and co-founded professional trick-riding teams like the Flying Cimarron and the Fireballs. One early booking even led to a chance meeting with Canadian rodeo producer Harry Vold, who later became her husband.
Karen’s influence extended beyond the arena. She helped sustain the art of trick riding by co-founding a trick riding school that now celebrates 37 years and continues to inspire a new generation. With students coming from across the country and a waiting list year-round, her teaching has kept the tradition vibrant.
Although modest about her role in rodeo production, Karen’s behind-the-scenes support, from flag presentations to timing events, was vital. This is a great reminder that the people working in the background, like Karen, are often the true backbone of any operation. As the rodeo world tips its hat to the women who shaped it, Karen Vold stands tall, not just in the saddle, but in legacy. Scan to
