Talking Glass Media's Elicia Morigeau recently sat down with Ryan Avery Follensbee, Director of Enology, Viticulture, and the Southwest Wine Center at Yavapai College, for a conversation about how education and passion meet in the heart of Arizona wine country.
At the Clarkdale campus, students tend to 13 acres of vineyards, learning the rhythm of the vines before stepping into the winery to craft their own blends. The journey culminates in the Southwest Wine Center tasting room, where the public can sip student-made wines and see the results of this immersive program.
The center welcomes everyone, from hobbyists to career-changers, and even offers distance learning options. Nestled in Arizona's newest federally recognized American Viticulture Area (AVA), the setting itself adds a sense of authenticity and place to the curriculum.
With nearly 30,000 bottles produced annually, students not only gain technical knowledge but also hands-on experience in label design, restaurant partnerships, and community events. It's a full-circle education that celebrates both craftsmanship and creativity.
As Avery explains, the center is more than a college program; it's a gateway into Arizona's thriving wine scene, cultivating both skilled winemakers and a deeper appreciation for the Verde Valley's vineyard heritage. Scan to watch the podcast and read the interview.
