Welcome to the inaugural edition of Cougar Country, a magazine highlighting the students and staff of the Chino Valley Unified School District.

I want to thank a few people for making Cougar Country possible. I first need to thank Guy Roginson from Talking Glass Media for approaching us with his proposal for Cougar Country. The concept was his vision and the final product could not have happened without his leadership and guidance. I also want to thank Matt Santos, the public information officer for Chino Valley Schools. Matt takes most of the pictures that you see on the District’s website and Facebook page. Matt’s experience as a photographer, journalist, and podcaster were vital in getting this first issue published.

I want to share a little bit about Chino Valley Schools. There have been schools in the Chino Valley and Paulden area since 1867 under a variety of different districts that disbanded. Chino Valley Schools officially started 104 years ago as The Farms District No. 51. This name is quite appropriate given the importance of agriculture in the area at the time. The District carries on this tradition through operating the Cooper Ag Center, a 52-acre farm located on the southwest corner of Center Street and Highway 89, and the fact that Chino Valley High School has the largest FFA group in Yavapai County.

The District started by serving grades 1st through 8th. Later on, students were bussed into Prescott to attend Prescott High School. Kindergarten was added in the 1960’s and 9th grade was added in the 1970’s. The District added grades 10-12 in the late 1980’s and graduated its first class in 1992.

6 WE ARE COUGAR COUNTRY WINTER 2022

Today, Chino Valley Schools has four schools, Territorial Early Childhood Center with grades pre K through 2nd, Del Rio School serving grades 3rd through 5th, Heritage Middle School with grades 6th through 8th, and finally Chino Valley High School, grades 9th through 12th. We serve over 2400 students ranging in age from 3 years old to 22 years old and our staff consists of 119 teachers, 15 administrators and directors, and 164 support staff members.

This past May there were 160 graduating seniors that walked across the stage to accept their diplomas. These seniors completed 123 career and technical education programs which are two to four year programs leading to industry certication in a variety of areas such as aviation, pre-engineering, culinary arts, drafting, automotive, welding, biotechnology, electrical line worker, medical professions, and computer network technology. In partnership with Yavapai College, 108 of the seniors cumulatively earned almost 1400 college credit hours, saving themselves almost $150,000. Three quarters of the class will be attending college or university next year and earned over $2,000,000 in scholarships.

The success of the District could not happen without several important partners. The Chino Valley Education Foundation is an independent 501(c)3 organization that accepts both tax deductible and state tax credit donations. The CVEF’s mission is to support the students and staff of the District and does this in a variety of ways including supporting our weekend food bag program, supporting our family resource center, providing and administering scholarships for seniors, and provides awards and support for teachers and staff to name a few. Other important partners include the Lions and Lioness Clubs of Chino Valley, which provide financial support for a variety of programs in the District. There are a variety of ways that the public can support the District, either financially or with the gift of time. Please reach out to a school or the District Office if you are interested in donating or volunteering.

Thank you for taking time to learn more about Chino Valley Schools and I hope you enjoy the inaugural edition of Cougar Country.

Sincerely, John Scholl,

THE CHINO VALLEY AREA CHAMBER OF COMMERCE (CVACC) HAS A LONG, RICH HISTORY OF COMMUNITY SERVICE, NOT ONLY BY ASSISTING AND PROMOTING OUR LOCAL BUSINESS COMMUNITY, BUT BY ASSISTING THE NEXT GENERATION OF CIVIC AND BUSINESS LEADERS.

The partnership and cooperation between the local Chamber and the Chino Valley Unified School District include many thousands of dollars in grants and scholarships awarded to our Cougar family, as well as connecting local students and educators with many area and national service organizations to assist in the cost of education and funding of various academic, artistic, and athletic pursuits throughout the district.

In recent years, with the launch of our YouTube Channel and the Chino Valley Update Podcast, we have utilized these tools to help promote many community and CVUSD events and programs, including the Superintendent Update Podcast and the recent CVUSD Governing Board Candidate Forum. These outlets, along with our other social media platforms and our weekly Talk of the Town program on KQNA, the Talk Radio/News station of the Arizona’s Hometown Radio Group family of stations, provide a much larger outreach for local events and organizations.

“We have been able to use our podcast and social media pages to really shine a light on our local businesses in a way that many business owners don’t have the resources or time to do on their own,” said Lorette Brashear, President and CEO of the CVACC. “Giving these businesses, specifically the smaller, independently owned companies, professionally produced, broadcast quality commercials and podcasts has proven extremely valuable to our Chamber members, and also local businesses that have not yet joined the Chamber.”

The CVACC provides both audio and video produced segments free of charge to members, and to non-members at a very reasonable cost.

CHINO VALLEY HIGH SCHOOLDrama

The Chino Valley High School Drama program, led by Dan Isenberg, is far more than performance art.

“One of the great things I hope all of my students take from this program is that the speaking skills they learn here will help them in every aspect of their lives,” says Isenberg. “This will help them prepare for job interviews, college projects, company meetings when they pursue their careers, really any avenue they choose theater can help them.”

Isenberg adds that even those students that don’t follow the performance route can benefit from the teamwork it takes to mount a production and the confidence they develop when creating something from nothing.

The students perform in the small 75 seat black box theater on the CVHS campus, producing several productions each year, including an annual variety show in the fashion of Saturday Night Live. This production features student written skits, monologues, and stand-up routines.

Isenberg himself is no stranger to the stage and public speaking. He spent nearly 20 years before coming to CVHS in the marketing and promotion department, as well as announcing for the NBA’s Detroit Pistons.

Isenberg also spent a few years as a stand-up comedian and voice over actor on television and radio in the midwest. He is also the “Voice of the Cougars” at most of the CVHS varsity sporting events.

For information, including upcoming productions, visit ChinoValleySchools.com and CVSD social media pages @CVSchoolsAZ.

CVUSD PROGRAM HIGHLIGHT
16 WE ARE COUGAR COUNTRY WINTER 2022

Career & Technical

Did you know that there is a college campus in Chino Valley? That’s right!

Yavapai College’s Chino Valley Center sits on 80 acres just a few miles off state route 89, tucked between the Compass Training Center and El Charro Norte.

Yavapai College’s Chino Valley Center programs are all part of the Career & Technical Education division. The programs offered here are primarily focused on shorter, lower-cost instruction geared to get students into the workforce quickly.

One of the cornerstones of this campus is agriculture. As the cost of food production and distribution rises, more people have become interested in growing their own food. Students can learn to work in production horticulture, greenhouse management, aquaculture, and integrated pest management.

Some students also move on to one of the bachelor’s programs offered in the state. Recently, the campus also became an ADOT-approved commercial driver training and testing center, offering 10 classes per year for students to achieve a Class A commercial license. At the end of October, there were more than 2,700 open positions for commercial drivers in Arizona alone.

You will also find the state’s only accredited electric utility linework program in Chino Valley, AZ., which frequently leads to a union apprenticeship and a better wage than most will ever see, pushing six figures within a few years. The campus also teaches equine care and management, in which students learn training techniques, grooming, hoof care and health, and riding.

Finally, this area is home to 3D printed construction, teaching the building, troubleshooting, and use of a large 3D printer for building concrete homes.

If you are interested in learning more, call the college’s admissions department at 928-717-7777.

CHINO VALLEY BOYS SOCCER REPEATS AS

STATE CHAMPIONS

The Chino Valley boys soccer team defended its title on October 29, 2022 in Mesa as the Cougars beat the Sedona Red Rock Scorpions 3-1 to repeat as state champions. It was the fifth straight title game appearance for the Chino Valley boys soccer program.

The Cougars, despite only returning two starters from last year’s team, didn’t miss a beat, going 9-1-1 in the regular season and beating St. Augustine and Blue Ridge to reach the championship game.

“I don’t think a lot of people expected us to be here even though we are Chino soccer,” head coach Todd Carey said after the game. “We lost so many good players and it’s hard to replace those guys. A lot of those guys are playing college ball and some are pro right now.”

The Cougars, as they have done for most of the season, jumped on the scoreboard first in the 16th minute of the opening period with a free kick off the foot of senior Osmar Gomez.

Chino Valley would score again in the 25th minute as senior Carlos Rodriguez booted a line drive past the Red Rock goalkeeper. However, the Cougars weren’t taking their foot off the gas as Carey noted they blew an early lead against Sedona in a loss earlier during the regular season and another

“It was key that we stayed on it, stayed pushing and didn’t let up and I think we did a much better job of that tonight by playing with the lead and staying on top of it because we’ve been giving those leads up,” Carey said.

Gomez in the 13th minute of the second period would extend Chino Valley’s lead to three goals with another free kick. “My only two goals in a state championship match and just a good way to end my senior season,” Gomez said after the game.

“All year we’ve been struggling with those free kicks and so we’ve been trying some new things and finally just letting them know just hit it hard,” Carey said.

Sedona did cut into the lead with a free kick of their own in the 26th minute off the foot of junior Luis Beltran, but that would be it as the Cougars held the rest of the way. The clock hit zero and the Chino Valley Cougars boys soccer team rushed the field and celebrated another state championship.

Torrence Dunham | Talking Glass Media against Blue Ridge in the semi-final game a few days prior.
“I’m so proud of this team and they brought joy to this whole season,” Gomez said.
