Powder Mo untain Uta h / Hou se 1 4 Year Completed / 2020 Project Type / Private Residence
House 14 is a dynamic response to an equally dynamic site. The building is located on a large, steeply sloping hillside that rolls downwards towards the valley and mountains beyond. In response to the clients interest in organic and curvilinear volumes, a low, horizontal form was struck that is held aloft by a primary concrete circulation core. The oval section of the building creates a distinct visual counterpoint
to its surroundings that is tempered and softened by a uniform cladding of rough-sawn red cedar. The interior of the building reveals itself through a sequence of spaces that are first compressed and then expansive. Traveling from the exterior parking bridge, through entry spaces, and out into the main living area of the house that reveals panoramic views of the landscape beyond. Powder Mo untain Utah / H or izon V illa g e Year Built / 2018 Project Type / Private Residences
Built at 9,000 feet elevation on Powder Mountain, Utah, Horizon consists of 30 cabins ranging in size from 1,000- 3,000 square feet, along with a series of strategically placed garages, and a communal lodge called the ‘Pioneer Cabin’ for the use of the homeowners. Buyers choose from four typologies, which either follow the contours like mountain goats, or are cross-grain,
9 / MacKay-Lyons Sweetapple Architects
projecting off the mountainside like extreme skiers. The theme and variation strategy, in combination with the dramatic topography, results in a neighborhood that has a powerful sense of both unity and variety.

Powder Mo untain, Utah / Hou se 1 6 Year Built / 2020 Project Yype / Private Residence
The central idea of this house was to distribute a large amount of program into a series of smaller pavilions floating on top of a connective plinth. The house artfully steps down-slope using a series of shed forms to contour to the landscape and organize program. The plinth is a continuous concrete volume from which three interior hearths arise into the wood pavilions, connecting the two form languages
and anchoring the pavilions into the landscape. Each of the pavilions is clad in shou sugi ban flame finished cedar, creating a high contrast response to the snow covered landscape of the site. Guests can wander through and between each of pavilions, catching framed views of mountains and landscape while interacting with a fourth exterior hearth and garden at the west end of the plinth. M a rgaree, N ova S cot ia / G o ld e n Grove She d Year Built / 2019 Project Type / Commercial Shed
Designed as a base of operations for a multi-phase development in Nova Scotia’s Margaree Valley, The Golden Grove Shed operates as both a rugged utility building and a comfortable jumping off point for the development team. Clad in corrugated cor-Ten panels, the building adopts the language of industrial and working structures in the region, while quietly refining and
33 / MacKay-Lyons Sweetapple Architects
expanding that language to create something that is more than the sum of its parts. The shed successfully illustrates a core idea present in much of MLSA’s work: That working buildings can and do possess a strength, beauty, and honesty seldom found in buildings of less economy.

Was atc h Range, Utah / Ha u te Rou te P rotot y p e s Year Built / In Design Project Type / Off-Grid Hut
Currently in development, The Haute Route prototypes are based around the idea of establishing a “high route” multi-day hiking trail in the American West. Designed to provide shelter and basic services for groups of hikers and guides along the route, each prototype is a fully self contained, construction that accommodates sleeping, eating, and hygiene, needs.
Approached by a client who required a highly flexible, and quickly demountable prototype, MLSA designed a kit of parts that can be assembled in multiple configurations based on the terrain, climate, and desired experience. Shown above is a prototype assembled in a high-desert landscape, while the following pages illustrates an alpine construction. Buildings and Villages / Alpine / 38

Powder Mo untain, Utah / H or izon V illa g e Sk i Lo dge Year Built / Unbuilt Project Type / Community Hall
The Ski Lodge at Horizon Village was envisioned as a place to both anchor and feature the community of private cabins build up around it. Designed as the core amenity space for the Horizon Village development, the building evokes the language and form of the Horizon Cabins but at a larger, and more civic scale.

Bigw in Is land, Ontario / Clu b Ca b ins Year Built / 2018 Project Type / Residences
The first three cabins of a planned community of 40 on Bigwin Island sit nestled among maple, pine and ash trees. As part of the clients plan for the island’s revitalization, a proposed 150-room hotel was nixed in favor of 40 guest houses, ranging in size from 1230 to 1350 square feet. The project uses a modernist stylistic vocabulary to express archetypal concepts. Exquisitely crafted from
natural materials, with a quietly assertive design, the cabins quietly reference the big, sheltering roofs of Muskoka’s historic cottages and boathouses. At once familiar and experimental, while durable enough to stand up to demanding climates, the Bigwin Island cabins offer a balanced, inventive and sustainable response to a complex architectural challenge. Located in the heart of a prosaic mountain valley in the American West, Under The Sun Ranch is a 24 acre working property designed to reinvigorate a regional agricultural community. The master plan for the property includes vegetable gardens, wincing and packaging facilities, orchards, an equine therapy center, community meeting house and

private residence, with the first phase of construction beginning in summer of 2020. The simple gable forms of the residence are drawn for the agrarian nature of the site and the language of surrounding farm’s working buildings. A winding entry path takes guests into the heart of the residence, programed to encourage a slower pace and perspective.

Comprised of three pavilions set around a large central court, the Pilot House Hotel and Spa was designed both as destination and jumping off point for exploration of Nova Scotia’s Margaree valley. Each of the three pavillions contains a distinct programmatic function within the resort. The Day Pavilion houses the social areas of the Pilot
House and is anchored by a large totemic concrete hearth and double height dining area, while the night pavilion hosts 9 luxury hotel suites that can accommodate individual guests or small private gatherings. the spa pavilion is oriented towards the surrounding landscape beyond the hotel, with apertures carved into the building that provide views and access to outdoor amenity such as a cold plunge and outdoor hot tub. B ay of Fundy, N ova S coti a / P rosp e c t Towe r Year Built / 2018 Project Type / Experimental Work
Situated at 1000ft elevation overlooking a wide valley, the prospect hut is made of a mix of hemlock and naturally preserved cedar. It resembles a forest of birch trees; naturally aged and silvered wood forms the spaced and notched cladding on the structures exterior. Together with the architects, the students who built the project
81 / MacKay-Lyons Sweetapple Architects
studied various configurations for the cladding. They developed a design for prefabricated wood panels that emulates the mottling of the existing birch trees on the site. Cedar boards stand on edge in a seemingly random, but very intentional pattern.

Floating on a large concrete pedestal, House 82 was conceived as a cluster of small buildings evoking a village or farm compound.
the pedestal houses the main living and dining spaces while opening up to expansive views of the valley beyond.
The two primary ‘buildings’ each assembled from an innovative Scandinavian log system, contain the primary functions of the house in discrete areas.
the smaller building contains a two car garage and guest quarters above, while the pedestal below links all of the spaces and provides bedrooms, a landing spot, and lounge for guests coming in from a day on the slopes.

A dream project, the magnificent site of Le Massif, and its distinctive setting in Québec’s beautiful Charlevoix region, demanded a respectful design approach. The client, no stranger to creative endeavor, demonstrated sustained commitment to both the creation of an exceptional project and to the environmental stewardship of a rare and unblemished place.
95 / MacKay-Lyons Sweetapple Architects
The foundation for the project was drawn from the distinct, indigenous culture of the region, with its’ unique relationship with nature, and in its generous expression of the idea of community. The masterplan for the mountain set out to create an authentic, diverse, and memorable year-round experience for both visitors and local inhabitants, building on the essential spirit of the place.
