HELEN GEORGE Graphic Designer, Bank of England I am a Graphic Designer here at the Bank of England and have a very interesting job working on projects such as the launch of the new five pound note last year, to social media design and the typesetting of the Annual Report and Accounts.

Since leaving Talbot Heath, I went to Shelley Park art college and gained a Foundation course in art and design and then went on to complete my degree at Exeter University in Graphic Design (specialising in typography).

Having moved to London and working in various publishing and design roles, I then focused on the inhouse corporate design and worked for Aberdeen Asset Managers and Reed Smith law (both in the City) as well as Nationwide Building Society and Lester Aldridge (both in Bournemouth).

DR FIONA MARSHALL FMEDSCI, FRSB, FBPHS, DSC HONS. After leaving Talbot Heath Fiona studied Biochemistry at Bath University. She then completed a PhD at Cambridge in Neuroscience. Her first job was in the Pharmaceutical Company Glaxo (now GSK) where she continued to work in the area of brain diseases. She rose up the ranks of GSK to become Head of Molecular Pharmacology. After 10 years she moved to Millenium Pharmaceuticals to be their Director of Molecular Pharmacology. In 2007, Fiona co-founded a Biotech company called Heptares where she is Chief Scientific Officer. Heptares is developing drugs targeting proteins on the cell called GPCRs – the company has discovered several compounds which are progressing to clinical trials for Alzheimer’s disease, schizophrenia, cancer and migraine and is recognized as one of the UK’s leading Biotech companies. In 2015 Heptares was acquired by the Sosei Group Corporation for £400 million.

Fiona has many other roles as an expert voice on advisory groups and committees for government, research councils and charities, including a current role as a member of the Board of Trustees for Alzheimer’s Research UK. She is an elected Fellow of The Academy of Medical Sciences, the British Pharmacological Society and the Society for Biology. In 2015 she was awarded the Royal Society of Chemistry’s Malcolm Campbell Award for seminal contributions to GPCR drug discovery. In 2012 she received the WISE Women of Outstanding Achievement for Innovation and Entrepreneurship award, which celebrates women who create change, make discoveries, innovate processes, establish new ventures and help the UK excel in Science. She is an Ambassador for Women in Science for the Government agency Innovate UK.

HENRIETTA MORRISON Founder and CEO of Lily’s Kitchen I've set up several businesses since leaving TH in 1987 and currently am CEO of Lily's Kitchen Proper Food for Pets.

We have been on the Sunday Times Virgin Fast Track 100 for the past three years, are Sunday Times Brand of the Year and have been named one of the top ten Most Ethical Brands in the World.

We won the Queen's Award for Enterprise in Innovation last year and I'm currently The Grocer and EY Entrepreneur of the Year.

I was TH Head Girl in 1987, Editor of the Centenary School Magazine and went to read Oriental Studies at Cambridge.

TH gave me a briia sta in life and spued me on to be an erepreneur.

SABINE ISA - European patent examiner I left TH in 1985 and completed an honours degree in Electronic Engineering.

I was then employed by British Telecom as a research engineer in Martlesham. I had done A level German (together with Physics, Maths and Chemistry) and had a reasonable command of French.

This opened up opportunities in Europe. Just before starting the job at BT I went for an interview at the European Patent Office (EPO) based in The Netherlands. I was offered the job but decided to try out life in industry. After a year at BT, I decided that research was not for me and luckily I had kept my job offer from the EPO.

I started work at the EPO in November 1989 and have been there ever since. I am a patent examiner and examine applications for inventions. It is a challenging job in that I have been effectively learning new things for my entire career. The requirement to join the Office is a degree in science and be fluent in one of 3 languages (English, French, German) and confident in the remaining 2.

The multi-cultural aspect of the Office makes it a very interesting place to be. At the beginning I examined patents in the colour field (i.e. how to achieve the same colour when you view an image on a screen or print it out) and now I work in the field of pattern recognition. This is a very large field which includes fingerprint analysis, iris detection and video analysis to name a few.

One surprise on joining the Office was discovering that the son of my biology teacher, Mrs Rowles, was also here!

If you are interested in patents there are 2 career options. You can become a patent examiner (at the British Patent Office or the European Patent Office) or you can become a patent attorney. A science degree is required as the technical content of inventions are examined and discussed. It’s a little bit of a combination of science and law and does not get boring.

POWERED BY STEAM SCIENCE TECHNOLOGY ENGINEERING ART MATHEMATICS RUTH HUISH - Engineer I left TH is 1979 with A levels in Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics and went on to study Electronic and Electrical Engineering at Loughborough University of Technology. The course was a 'thick sandwich' and I spent my third year working at Plessey Telecommunications in Beeston Nottingham.

Plessey then sponsored me for my final year and I returned to work there after my graduation.

Having toured all the departments in my year out, on my return I chose to work in the Test Methods and Manufacturing Department where I became responsible for their first surface mount machine.

When I had my children I chose to work part time and took a job as a lecturer in telecommunications on HND programs. In subsequent years I returned to full time work and taught on a range of engineering programs with school pupils, UAE military students, apprentices and full time college students. I am currently responsible for the L3 Engineering courses at a Further Education College.

PAT SUTLIEFF - GP I left TH in 1967, at the age of 18, having taken A levels in Zoology, Chemistry and Physics and an AS level in Botany to pursue my ambition of a career in medicine. Six years of University followed, with 18 months of Pre-clinical Medicine and 18 additional months for a BSc in Pharmacology at University College, London, then three years of Clinical Medicine at St George's Hospital, London. After a compulsory year of "house jobs", averaging 126 working hours a week (6 months of General and Cardiac Medicine at St George's, Hyde Park Corner and 6 months General Surgery at St Charles' Hospital Ladbroke Grove), I decided to use my pharmacological expertise and took a Senior House Officer job in Anaesthetics at Northwick Park Hospital, Harrow. During this period, I attended a course at St Thomas's Hospital in preparation for the Fellowship of the Royal College of Anaesthetists but found that I preferred looking after conscious patients. Taking the Diploma in Anaesthetics, instead of the Fellowship, I embarked on training for General Practice, with 6 months in Obstetrics and Gynaecology at Northwick Park Hospital, leading to the Diploma of the Royal College of Obstetrics and Gynaecology and then a year's traineeship in a GP surgery in Harlesden, London.

I sha always be greful to TH for providing the springboard to an absorbing and sisfying carr.

I loved General Practice and secured a half-time partnership with one other GP in Hayes, Middlesex, working additionally in a Family Planning Clinic and an out-ofhours deputising service.Taking 2 months off work for the birth of my first child, and 3 months for the second, I reduced my hours to 2 half-day sessions for a year and was then offered a part-time partnership in a large 10-doctor Health Centre practice nearer my home, in which another TH Old Girl from my year was working. After 2 years, I was head-hunted by a 3-partner practice in the same town.

Being an independent woman, I decided to start my own practice as a singlehanded GP. There followed 17 years happily working 24/7 with only an occasional week's holiday covered by a locum. After a long and very rewarding career, I retired at the age of 61.
