Head’s Report Dear pupils, parents, staff and governors, I am delighted to report on Talbot Heath’s 130th year. Compiling this overview gave me time to reflect on the essence of Talbot Heath, looking at our present and at our past.

Founded in 1886 by Mary Broad, the school was to offer a first class liberal education to girls, underpinned by Christian principles. Miss Broad aimed to inspire and break the accepted boundaries with regard to girls’ education. Local newspapers from 1890 contain accounts of Miss Broad’s girls behaving like boys on nature rambles on the heath, armed with butterfly nets and notebooks, carefree, confident and enquiring.

As the school grew, developed and moved site, the pioneering spirit was still evident in the breadth of curriculum, the range of facilities and the aims of staff to provide lessons that would develop academic rigour but also a love of learning. Talbot Heath girls developed a reputation for character and positivity.

So what would Mary Broad think of us in 2016?

I think she would be very pleased to see that our pupils have principles but also personality. She would appreciate the fact that they have a spark about them that allows them to be individuals.

She would be delighted that the focus of our 130th birthday celebrations has been fundraising for our partner community in Kigali, who share our Christian ethos and she would chuckle at the thought of staff irreverently cycling down the main hall as part of the birthday celebrations.

We raised more than £20,000 for charity in 201516 - a phenomenal amount.

Mary Broad would appreciate the innovation of curriculum and the breadth of opportunities for our girls, seen in the writing workshops, the art enrichment opportunities, our musical and creative performances, our trips, clubs and sporting breadth.

She would applaud the fact that our girls are keen scientists and mathematicians, and would congratulate our STEM teams for doing so well in the local competition last year, with three teams making the final and one team winning.

As someone known for dressing up and taking part in all manner of crazy adventures, she would have lauded Mrs Luke for agreeing to be launched across the school pool in the winning design.

As a fervent feminist, she would delight in the fact that Lucy Paget was awarded Young Female Innovator of the Year at the age of 11 for her agricultural robot design, up against students aged 11-19.

She would rejoice in the spirit and ingenuity of the pupils and staff. She would thoroughly approve of the fact that this year we have been looking at the stars as well as our notes and texts.

She would appreciate the fact that we cherish our heritage as a school and value the beauty of our buildings and surroundings.

She would look at the commitment and expertise of the staff, the positivity of the pupils and the strong community spirit and say ‘Bravo!’, knowing that we have stayed true to her original dream of a school that values learning, but also values others and looks outward rather than inward. I think she might even raise a glass and toast the next 130 years, excited at the prospect of what the future might hold.

Junior School Report

Here is a flavour of what the Juniors have been up to in the past 12 months. Of course, a school is nothing without the people in it.

The pupils remain a delight to teach and bring so much enthusiasm, energy and commitment. Our parents are very supportive and we value their support and the relationship between home and school, which is key to the success and happiness of the girls. The staff continue to be a very committed team, giving so much to the life of the school in many ways above and beyond their classroom teaching.

This year we welcomed past pupil Lucinda Sandon-Allum, who talked about the work of the David Sheldrick Trust in looking after elephants. We raised enough money to adopt five elephants, although the girls were sad that they were ‘virtually’ ours but not living on campus!

Our constant self-evaluation and striving to further improve what we offer at Talbot Heath, means changes to the curriculum, to extra-curricular activities and also physical changes to our school buildings, some of which are easy to notice, others less so. We are proud of our buildings and our campus, but the buildings go back to the 1930s when they were purpose-built for us. This year has seen further refurbishment, with cavity wall insulation, and our programme of cloakroom refurbishment continues.

The outside area for EYFS has been transformed with new vibrant fencing and we continue to develop our woodland. We have added two beautiful mosaic panels to the Jubilee Hall as part of our 130 celebrations.

Every member of staff and pupil contributed to these panels and they are a wonderful lasting legacy admired by all.

Talbot Heath has a long tradition of helping others and this manifests itself in all sorts of ways. We support many charities throughout the year and, for the first time in several years, held our in-school charity afternoon with all girls participating and choosing the

selves on the conservation and protection of habitats.

We were extremely successful in the national Writing Wizardry competition run by Bournemouth University. This competition for children 9 years and under was designed to stimulate creativity and promote children’s writing. Year 4 pupils were lucky to have a workshop run by the Bournemouth University team and we were very proud that 11 of the 18 stories shortlisted nationally were written by pupils at Talbot Heath. The overall winner, Shakira, won her height in books.

Another development has been the involvement of the choir singing at the O2 arena, a very prestigious event enjoyed by all who attended. This is planned again for next year.

We enjoy inviting people into school to work with our girls and enhance their educational experience and this year saw our first visit from the RSPB. We have an amazing campus with such a range of environments and it was wonderful to have this recognised by an outside organisation who pride them1

Other special visits included Treehouse Theatre staging another Play in a Day. This time we sped through Viking and Saxon invasions ending with the Norman Conquest in an afternoon of vibrant entertainment while learning a fair bit of history. Other fun historical events included a visit from Timeliners, re-telling the story of the Ancient Olympics in their own inimitable style, and a superb Aztec day where we welcomed back Mexicolore. Not everything can be accomplished on the school campus, so we take the girls out of school for many events and activities. Some events are regular features on our calendar, such as being evacuated to Nothe Fort, experiencing life as a Celtic settler, trying out technology at Intech Science Centre and visiting the Oceanarium to study marine life. We also try new events such as a visit to the Mayflower Theatre and the Titanic exhibition.

Junior School Report

A great deal of work goes on each day to get the girls to achieve the wonderful things they do. Routine work is still made fresh and exciting for our pupils, and staff are proactive in finding new and different ways to access

curriculum areas. The iPads, now fully embedded in school, have brought so much depth to our studies. All Junior classrooms have Apple TVs now; our girls embrace the new technology which is adding richness and depth to an already varied curriculum.

This leads us to stop and reflect on how things have changed, especially in this milestone year of the school’s 130th birthday. We raised money for a farmers’ cooperative in Rwanda, as the whole school embraced iPledge 130, and we held a special tea. 130 years bring many changes, and in my almost 30 years I have seen the school change and develop. When I was appointed Head of Junior School in 1987

there were just 78 girls in 6 classes, Years 4 to 6, and St Katharine’s was a boarding house. School life was very different; indeed, the world was very different. Since then, Junior School has grown into the flourishing school it is now with almost 220 pupils from 3 to 11. When Pre-Prep took over St Katharine’s we lost our chapel, and in 1995 the Jubilee Hall was built to mark our Diamond Jubilee. You may be unaware that a time capsule is buried beneath the entrance of the Jubilee Hall and one day someone may dig it up to find out what life was like in 1995.

We now have three computer rooms in Junior School, two dining rooms, two libraries, an art studio, a science room, our own stage and an eco garden. Our girls use iPads and computers as well as pens and pencils, our uniform has changed and so has the amount of paperwork underpinning everything, though even this is becoming electronic. But so much hasn’t changed: the school motto: Honour before Honours, is lived daily by the girls and is now proudly displayed on our inspirational staircases and mosaic. Special events in the year such as St Margaret’s birthday still see the oldest working with the youngest and foster the feel of a close-knit school family. The girls enjoy playing in the woods, making dens, and they immerse themselves in all aspects of school

The focus on new initiatives, on keeping things current, on sciences as well as the arts, on an holistic education, on confidence and consideration and on working together for the good of all is still something girls and staff value at Talbot Heath, just as they did in 1886. In 130 years the school may be unrecognisable in many ways from the school today, but I am sure you would still be able to recognise the spirit of Talbot Heath and its values.

Life is about phases and stages and as we leave one phase and embark on the next we never truly leave it behind because it has become a part of us and left its mark on us forever. I know that, whatever I choose to do in the future, my experiences at Talbot Heath will never leave me but, more importantly, neither will the faces and the smiles of the hundreds of girls I have been privileged to care for over the past 29 years.

Young Enterprise This year we had two companies. 'Gazelle' wrote and created a children's book which launched on Amazon at just £2.29. 'Bombillo' was the first in-house company made up of boarders. They had an uncertain start; the first company folded, but the girls persisted and set up a smaller group in the New Year.

CAREERS Careers Advice Careers advisor Katherine Speed from Ansbury was available to girls for most Thursday mornings during the Autumn Term.

She met and advised a select group of the U6 and U5 girls. All girls in U5 and U6 were interviewed internally to offer advice and support as to the next steps they needed to take on their individual Careers Paths.

Careers Convention We hosted a Careers Convention in October and provided an opportunity for students from Talbot Heath, Bournemouth School for Girls and Bournemouth School to gain knowledge about a variety of careers from Architecture to Acting. Guest speakers gave talks on their area of expertise, including Chemical Engineering and Criminal Law. We added an entrepreneurial flavour by inviting Jimmy from ‘Jimmy’s Iced Coffee’ to talk about his vision. The evening was a success and had an excellent atmosphere.

Records of Achievement All girls at Talbot Heath have a Record of Achievement, recording good work and adding certificates from extra-curricular activities as well as work produced in Careers lessons. This year, we relaunched the files to U3 to give them a higher profile.

The English and Theatre Studies faculty consider it important to encourage students to visit the theatre and places of literary interest in order to broaden their cultural experience. Several trips have been organised this year:

In February we recruited Business Advisers, Audrey Bland and Peter Stockford, who kindly volunteered to help the girls. 'Bombillo' produced a mug and made a small profit.

‘Gazelle' won monies from the Dragons Den task and reached the second round of the local heats, coming 3rd in the region. I look forward to holding the Scheme in-house next year, with our new business advisers being available from the start.

The Glass Menagerie, 39 Steps and Institute at The Nuffield, Southampton Twelfth Night and As You Like It at the Lighthouse, Poole The annual Drama Festival provided more opportunities for students to perform in front of an audience. The event also encourages students to work effectively in small groups, devising routines or scripts and preparing their own make-up.

ENGLISH AND THEATRE STUDIES The English and Theatre Studies Faculty consider it important to provide curriculum enrichment for all students and offer a wide range of activities.

GEOGRAPHY GCSE Geographers started September 2015 on the Isle of Purbeck, investigating coastal processes and landforms at Old Harry and Swanage Bay. Fieldwork has always been an important tool, and feedback from students shows that they gain more than just skills and understanding from these trips.

Field trips are undoubtedly an essential tool with regards to exam preparation, but they enrich our curriculum and provide valuable time for students to interact with their peers and develop transferable skills.

This is the 14th year that Claire Boyington has organised a ‘Readathon’ event which encourages students at KS3 to read widely as well as to donate to charity. We raised an impressive £539.50, and our students have now raised over £17,000 for the charity. The popularity of the event also reflects our students' genuine enjoyment of literature.

This year, Mrs Wakeling has run a popular weekly reading group, encouraging students to enjoy good literature and to share their opinions. The students’ enthusiasm and high level of critical thinking is made evident in the lively weekly lunchtime discussions. Our students continue to reach beyond the curriculum in their literary and cultural 3

Each group from Years 7 to 12 took part in either day or residential trips this year. Year 7 had a trip to Puttles Bridge in the New Forest which introduced them to practical river field work. In colourful wellies, every student excitedly launched themselves into the river, with flow meters, tape measures and ranging poles at the ready. Year 8 visited the Living Rainforest near Newbury, to apply their knowledge of plant and animal adaptation. Students were delighted by the goeldi monkeys and baby marmosets and,

impressively, could recall the information provided by our knowledgeable guides (despite not being permitted to take notes whilst walking round the attraction) in their subsequent geography lessons. Our two prize-winners, Saskia Green and Olivia Perera, thoroughly enjoyed their 'keeper experience'. Other trips included a visit to the Earth galleries of the Natural History Museum, controlled assessment activities in Lyndhurst for Year 11 and residential studies for the Sixth form in Cornwall.

In March Mrs Atkins and Mrs Chapleo attended the annual Geographical Association conference at the University of Manchester. This was a time to network with other geography staff from around the country, to listen to lectures and investigate new pedagogy. They attended the Awards Ceremony and dinner in the Fossil Gallery of Manchester museum and proudly represented Talbot Heath to collect the SGQM and Centre of Excellence awards.

Our own Dorset GA branch continued to provide additional educational opportunities for local Sixth form students at our 6th and 7th conferences, in November and March.

Undoubtedly our speakers, who included Bristol University's Dr Suzanna Jenkins, helped inspire some of our pupils to continue their geographical studies at university.

Enrichment activities such as these and our WorldWise quizzes are some of the reasons that we attained our SGQM and Centre of Excellence awards from the Geographical Association.

Lucy Gibson, Zelie Batchelor, Ellie Edwards and Lauren Desira have all chosen to read Geography at University this year.

Congratulations must also go to Lauren for her excellent A* grade at A2, despite only taking up geography at A level. We were delighted that all our A2 geographers were able to secure places at either their chosen universities or places of work.

Planning has also started for the Easter 2017 geography tour. Once again we focused our intentions on Iceland and 28 students have quickly signed up for this unforgettable geographical experience. We are all counting the days until we depart and can experience this incredible country and the physical geography on offer there.

Mrs Chapleo HISTORY The department ran trips for U3 to Corfe Castle and for L4 to Hampton Court Palace.

U3 completed their study of Medieval Realms with some excellent reports on the castle’s defences for King John. L4 had a debate with an Elizabethan courtier and then we all found the centre of the maze! For follow-up work, the girls wrote some very informative letters as sixteenth century Venetian ambassadors.

U4 had ‘living history’ lessons in the air-raid shelter. These included sound effects and an air-raid siren whilst in the classroom and an evacuation to the safety of the shelter. Once inside, pupils were able to appreciate the fears, and understand the experiences, of their predecessors during the war.

L5 were taken to see the film “Suffragette” in October. The release date coincided with the girls’ study of the campaign for women’s suffrage. They were able to evaluate the film as a source of historical evidence, as well as enjoying the show!

During the Easter holiday, the department ran a four-day trip to Berlin for L5 and U5 GCSE students, designed to complement their study of the Third Reich and the Cold War. We visited many sites including the Reichstag, Sachsenhausen Concentration Camp, the Jewish Museum and Holocaust Memorial and the Berlin Wall. The trip was a great success and girls commented on how it had enhanced their understanding.

The History Department continues to be involved in special events and projects throughout the year: Remembrance Day/Holocaust Memorial Day The department organised assemblies for these two occasions.

Dorset Architectural Heritage Week The air-raid shelter was opened to the public over one weekend in September as part of Dorset Architectural Heritage Week. Four Sixth formers and staff showed visitors around the bunker and answered their queries. There was also an archive display in the Library.

The Air-Raid Shelter This continues to be used by other schools and in September we welcomed staff and pupils from St Mark’s School, Bournemouth, for the second time. Pupils from Haymoor School also visited: the children had a morning session inside the shelter, experiencing an important aspect of life during the Second World War in our unique facility. Some of our L5 GCSE History students, dressed as former pupils from the war, presented contemporary memories from our extensive archive.

The Department is particularly grateful to all of the students who have helped with these events and is very proud of the positive comments made about them by pupils and staff from other schools and members of the general public.

ECONOMICS The school ethos is to foster mutual respect and understanding. Economics contributes to this on both inter-personal and wider levels.

Pupils are encouraged to respect the points of view of a variety of key economic agents, and to discuss topical issues of economic, business and social importance from an impartial but informed viewpoint.

For many pupils, the exciting new Economics B A level is their first introduction to the ‘real’ world. It opens their eyes to social and moral problems experienced by consumers, firms and the government, as well as the need to balance equity with efficiency within an economy. Pupils learn that the world has to change, or the rich will get richer and the poor will get poorer; that people in less developed economies will continue to suffer and be exploited; that the ever-increasing demand for the car will lead to congestion and pollution from which we will never recover. Pupils start to understand what governments can do for us, that firms can have other objectives than the maximisation of profits, and that as individuals we can all contribute to a better world in the future by acknowledging the importance of mutual respect and understanding in all issues related to economics and business.

Healthworks also came in to deliver a session on puberty. As part of the ‘Healthy Living’ module, Year 8 had a talk on ‘Looking after Your Emotional Health’ from the Samaritans.

As part of the Substance Abuse programme, the Year 9 talk on ‘Alcohol and Risk’ by NHS Healthworks and on 'Drugs and the Law' by the SSCT were very informative. Year 9 also heard about the work of Bournemouth Magistrates in individual class sessions.

Years 9, 10 and 11 had talks from the SSCT about sexting and online safety to compliment work studied in IT lessons. Sexual Health Mornings for Year 10 were very informative, with sessions on contraception, STI’s and teenage pregnancy. Year 11 had a follow up talk on cervical cancer from NHS Healthworks.

We also organised the Contact the Elderly Tea Party which took place in the Boarding House in May and was enjoyed by all.

Mrs Baker Sixth Form PSE On Life Skills Day the girls had sessions on Health and Well-Being and Cooking on a Budget. The aim of this day is to equip our students for the transition to University.

Ms Horgan PERSONAL AND SOCIAL EDUCATION PSE and RS make up the PSRE programme. We have had a variety of speakers this year to enhance the curriculum for Key Stage 3 and 4.

A group of five Year 9 students represented Talbot Heath at the Parliament Week debate at Bournemouth Town Hall in November.

Year 7 enjoyed a talk on Friendship by Liz from the Samaritans and an introduction to Christianity by the School Chaplain. NHS

University to learn more about research skills and to access the library.

Oxbridge students continue to attend weekly sessions led by Mrs Baker in order to strengthen their analytical skills and prepare for interviews. Students also attended the Oxbridge Experience morning at Hampshire Collegiate School in the spring term.

The Debating Society has been well attended by members of the Sixth form who regularly propose motions and lead discussion. Med Soc continues to be a valuable preparation for students who wish to apply for Medicine or Veterinary Science.

The students have greeted all our visitors with courtesy and interest. Their horizons have been widened and their awareness raised. Thoughtful questions have been discussed. Hopefully, all of these speakers have contributed to the extension of the girls’ knowledge, contemplation and understanding of topics and issues beyond their academic subject choices.

The Sixth form continues to strengthen its links with Southampton University. Students attended a session led by Southampton University on the UCAS process and how to complete personal statements. We were also fortunate to have been visited by Mrs Alani who gave one-to-one sessions on how to improve personal statements.

The Extended Project Qualification remains popular with our Sixth formers, allowing them the opportunity to test their research skills in preparation for university life. Once again, students attended an EPQ day at Southampton

MATHEMATICS This academic year, a total of 101 girls entered the UKMT (United Kingdom Mathematical Trust) Maths Challenges. The three challenges are taken throughout the year at Senior, Intermediate and Junior level; subsequently, all ages can have a go. All these challenges involve answering multiple choice questions which are very demanding.

As well as mathema-tical knowledge learnt in class, they involve lateral thinking and logic.

In the Senior Maths Challenge, two Upper Sixth students were awarded a silver certificate and six others gained bronze. In the Lower Sixth, our budding mathematicians achieved two silver and six bronze awards with Katy Zung achieving the highest score.

In February it was the turn of Upper 4, Lower 5 and Upper 5 to take the Intermediate Maths Challenge and this again has resulted in a whole array of certificates. We achieved nine silver and nine bronze certificates.

Some of the girls were only in Upper 4, so they have plenty more years to achieve even higher results.

The Junior Challenge results for girls in Lower 4 and selected Upper 3, have just been issued, with Francesca Rowley achieving gold, Becky Rowney and Molly Taylor achieving silver. A further 10 girls gained bronze awards.

All the pupils who entered should be congratulated on their success in these demanding challenges.

Hannah Glatter received a certificate for successfully cracking all the codes in this year’s Alan Turing Cryptography Competition which is run by the School of Mathematics at Manchester University. With nearly 900 teams entering the competition, Hannah, all by herself, ranked an amazing 91st on the leaderboard.

In September 2015, we celebrated European Day of Languages, starting with a special assembly where L6 girls gave a presentation on the importance of learning languages.

Songs were performed in French and Italian and a Spanish sevillana danced. Throughout the day, pupils and staff greeted each other in 43 languages and all the rooms were labelled in French, Spanish and Italian.

This event was repeated in a Junior school assembly.

We had two breakfasts in October: a French and a Spanish one, in both Senior and Junior schools. In November, the Onatti theatre company entertained us with the play ‘Les garçons’.

In January, U3 celebrated ‘l’Epiphanie’ by eating traditional ‘Galette des Rois’ (cake of the three kings) and learning the song ‘j’aime la galette’. In February, we held our 4th Linguists’ Dinner, a real success. The evening consisted of gourmet courses with a rich variety of entertainment: poetry, songs, drama, flamenco and can-can dancing.

In April, a Spanish theatre company entertained us with another play.

Mrs Hooton MODERN LANGUAGES It has been another year of exciting monthly events for the Languages department.

U3 girls tasted snails and we believe most of them enjoyed them! In May, Juniors and all girls up to U4 had the opportunity to attend a Samba dance workshop.

MUSIC This year saw our usual range of events.

Informal lunchtime concerts are generally held on the first Tuesday of every month and they provide our young soloists with a platform to perform pieces they are learning. The dates appear on the school calendar and supporters are always welcome.

Currently, 135 instrumental and singing lessons are provided by specialist teachers every week. Whilst impressive, it is disappointting that this number has diminished over recent years; unfortunately, it is a national trend. In a busy, changing technological world, it is pleasing to find youngsters who still enjoy learning acoustic instruments, and this is to be encouraged.

The skills required to learn an instrument are proven to have a positive impact on a child's general development and learning.

In Senior school the orchestra, choir and smaller ensembles continue to meet, but we are aware of increasing demands on pupils' time which can prevent regular attendance at rehearsals. We hope to solve this challenge by reorganising some of the groupings. Junior choir and percussion ensemble continue to be popular and to flourish.

This year we welcomed new percussion teacher Mr Waller, who has fully immersed himself in the life of the department and helped with concerts and events.

In October, twelve GCSE/A level musicians visited London to see ‘The Marriage of Figaro’ at the Royal Opera House. In the interval the girls were fortunate to meet two of the Opera House Orchestra, Marina (clarinet) and Jenny (violin) who told us how many rehearsals they had and other interesting facts. It was a great experience that the girls will never forget.

After much hard work learning songs and dance moves it was thrilling to perform with 6,500 other children, a live band and many TH parents in the audience. This is a fantastic venture that we hope to repeat on an annual basis, with Year 5 pupils currently preparing for next year.

Six senior musicians attended a BSO Concert at Lighthouse, Poole; the highlight was Rachmaninoff's second piano concerto.

Lower 4 were treated to an energising day of drumming, tapping and beating in workshops led by former members of Stomp. They were invited to be innovative and rhythmic with a range of unusual instruments, from plastic waste pipes and dustbin lids to barrels and engine pipes. Mixing clapping, spinning and energy, the girls created their own mini performances. The workshops followed a visit to The Mayflower theatre, where the girls saw an electrifying production of Stomp.

In November we joined forces with the Drama department for a fantastic production of Fame. Our senior choir provided the chorus, so the cast ranged from Year 7 to Upper Sixth. Although this was essentially 'Fame in a day', the musical side needed ongoing preparation and rehearsals throughout the term. The girls enjoyed performing to capacity audiences.

We also held a Junior soloists' concert, with the Mary Norton Hall packed to capacity with family members. The Junior ensemble began with a lively piece, Simple Syncopation, then came our brave soloists. They all performed like professionals to create a superb concert.

In December we staged our usual Nativity and carol services. This year’s Junior carol service was based on the Christingle, with magical lanterns, candles and Christingles.

of the Royal Opera House, Glyndebourne and Carnegie Hall. The concert celebrated Shakespeare on the 400th anniversary of his death. This was an exciting day for Iolla who hopes to study at one of the prestigious Music Conservatoires next year.

Following last year’s success, we presented the T2 Festival in the Great Hall. Once again our young performers excelled themselves with a varied programme of popular music, and all proceeds went to the Shelley Theatre Restoration Appeal.

Our U3 Year Group were fortunate to receive complimentary tickets for Guys and Dolls at the Mayflower Theatre. The story was a little slow to unfold, but once the big musical numbers started, excitement began to build, and Adelaide and her Hot Box Girls provided some fun dance routines.

In February, 48 pupils took Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music exams, from Prep Test level to Grade 8. I’m pleased to report that they were all successful.

In July, Year 8 pupils were treated to a day off timetable to explore South American culture. Mr Waller ran some lively samba workshops which were enjoyed by all.

The Music Department organised a trip for Upper 3 to see Chitty Chitty Bang Bang at the Mayflower Theatre. The car was the real Chitty used in the film and it was amazing when it actually flew. The Child Catcher wasn't too scary, but the long arms of his shadow were!

We were treated to a concert of Chamber Music by senior pupils in the Mary Norton Hall. Beautiful music was provided by the String Quartet, Senior Strings and some solo instrumental and vocal items. Parents and friends enjoyed refreshments and all agreed it had been a wonderful display of talent.

Our U5 GCSE Musicians demonstrated their considerable composition skills to parents and staff members, from Irish Jigs to an elegant ‘Dolce and Gabana’ waltz and cleverly structured ‘Theme and Variations’.

The girls performed solo pieces followed by related compositions for their first study instrument or voice.

In April two of our Sixth formers, Iolla and Alice, heard Kate Royal sing at the Royal Festival Hall, London. Kate was a pupil at TH in the 1990s and then studied at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama. She is one of Britain's best loved sopranos and star

We were asked to put on a special concert for Mrs Leahy on her retirement after nearly 30 years. The theme was her great love: 'cats', with girls from Reception to Year 6 singing 'Top Cat', 'The Aristocats', 'Macavity', and so on. The event ended with the whole Junior School singing 'Power in Me', our anthem for the end of term. The beautiful singing reduced Mrs Leahy to tears! The material was reprised for the Junior Awards ceremony, giving parents the opportunity to hear the songs.

Curriculum Enhancement: Subject and Faculty Reports 2015-2016

ART AND DESIGN Gallery visits have become an integral and valuable part of GCSE and A Level. A Level students visited Tate Britain and the National Portrait Gallery. Upper 5 toured the ‘Plastic Vanitas’ exhibition and Lower 5 saw AUB’s Degree Show. Coursework portfolios have been enhanced by the reports of these visits.

A cross curricular Cultural Day was introduced, with Lower 4 students exploring art, music and food on the theme of Rio. Pupils thoroughly enjoyed creating colourful wire carnival fish, tasting South African culinary delights and samba drumming.

Extra curricular workshops have been run to support GCSE and A level students, as always resulting in a range of good results and aiding 50% of the A Level students in developing their studies with Art based diplomas or degrees.

INFORMATION COMMUNICATION TECHNOLOGY All girls, from Year 4 in Junior school through Senior school, received an iPad to aid their learning. The iPads have become an indispensable teaching and learning resource; many students see this development as aligning school life with the way they use technology at home and out and about.

A one-off one day workshop by a model making specialist took place at the beginning of the summer holidays. This was a great success, with the girls building on a range of skills to create a muppet-style puppet.

Another one day workshop was completed in recreating a French or Spanish master. The stunning results are now decorating the Languages corridor. This will be repeated in all the Senior school corridors.

Our annual Art exhibition showcased the amazing work of GCSE and A Level students. It is always wonderful to see the students' work displayed together and the range of materials and techniques used to create all the individual pieces.

DESIGN TECHNOLOGY Food and Nutrition The Food and Nutrition Department at Talbot Heath continues to bubble with activity, with new initiatives encouraging the girls to don their aprons and get cooking!

The ICT department continues to maintain strong links with other departments in the school to support and enhance the use of ICT in all subject areas, particularly history, geography and mathematics.

Upper 3 students were fortunate to have an architectural lecture presented by Simon Bissell, lecturer at AUB.

Lower 4 students explored modernism and the school building to create a series of stencil prints to commemorate 130 years of Talbot Heath. Their skillful prints were sold at the Modernism on Sea event in the summer.

Business studies encourages and develops skills of analysis and evaluation but always applied to the context of real businesses in real economic environments. The immediate effect of Brexit on the value of the pound was one such example which students could use to illustrate their exam answers.

Girls in U3 used ICT skills to create presentations about their political parties’ manifestos in Citizenship. In L4, new links with the Barclays Eagle Labs helped the girls produce prototypes of products and to discuss business plans. They created imaginative products and marketing campaigns in ICT which they pitched to invited Dragons.

Our first Lego Mindstorms robot was built by the girls in U3 to help them learn coding.

They gave a lively demonstration of robots to a junior assembly.

Mr Reidy BUSINESS STUDIES This year, Brexit illustrated the current and dynamic nature of business studies as it was a relevant topic in the case study for unit 3.

September saw the introduction of The Leith’s School of Food and Wine ‘Let’s Cook’ Course. In five weekly sessions, in partnership with this prestigious cookery school, girls developed skills, confidence and independence, cooking a variety of dishes such as salmon with a lime crust, carrot and coriander soup with garlic croutons, and apple and raisin crumble with crème Anglais.

During the autumn, we teamed up with the Christian Union to produce chocolate delights as our contribution to Tearfund’s annual Big Bake. Their No Child Taken Campaign aims to protect children at risk of trafficking, and we raised enough to protect nine children: proof of the power of flour, and a little bit of baking, to make a big difference.

The judges of our Christmas Cake Decorating Competition had a hard task, with everything from an advent calendar with treats behind each door, to Santa on the moon with penguins. This time, the whole school could use a new iPad voting system, and overall winners Carys Fernyhough and Ellie Burrage received the ‘Golden Chef Award’ for their fabulous gingerbread grotto.

In the spring we continued our ‘Great Talbot Heath Bake Off’, and all of U3 took part during their Food lessons. They produced remarkable entries with Harry Potter characters, and an entire vegetable patch!

This year's Easter Cake Competition coincided with our Rwanda Cake Raffle for iPledge 130. The Food dept supported the preparation and decoration of 10 large fruit cakes with a Rwandan theme and welcomed a plethora of Easter cakes at the same time.

Holroyd Howe chefs voted Grace Piercy’s intricate Easter basket the winner, but runner up Madeleine Grafham's giant nest with floating chocolate egg was voted the cake the judges most wanted to eat!

In the summer, Year 12 spent part of Life Skills Day in the Food Room, brushing up on practical food skills ready for university life.

Working in groups, they made and tasted everything from Thai green curry and spaghetti bolognaise to naan and garlic bread. The results were delicious and many discovered that cooking may not be so difficult and can even be fun.

Our sugar paste modelling club learnt simple methods and techniques to produce fun character models, 3D novelty animals and delicate flower decorations, including Christmas robins, Easter chick cupcakes and elephant cake toppers.

It was also a busy year for the STEM club, taking part in an environmentally based design challenge. The winners of this regional competition were a group of L4 students, who came up with the design for a boat made from recycled plastic bottles.

The boat was constructed and tested on the final day of the summer term. The STEM club also took part in Rocket Science, a national project growing two sets of seeds, one set which had been to the ISS and one which was Earth-based.

This year I introduced an after-school craft club which has proved extremely popular, so much so that it was over-subscribed. The club runs for six weeks each term, and the girls learn a different craft each week. These have included glass lantern painting, beading, kumihimo (Japanese knot jewellery), origami, painting pebble paperweights, and sewing Christmas and Halloween decorations. The girls throughly enjoyed the sessions, taking home a beautiful handmade item each week to impress their friends and family .

Mrs Teuber SCIENCE There were several space themed events this year. In the Autumn term, students and parents listened in to the International Space Station (ISS) as it passed overhead and Mr Bill Coombes gave a very interesting talk on the history and work of the ISS.

In the Spring, Year 6 and Upper 3 students had the opportunity to control one of the cameras on board the ISS to take some wonderful images of the Earth. All our students then had the opportunity to visit an inflatable planetarium which was based in the Great Hall for three days in March.

SPORT Our pupils’ sporting achievements have continued to be highly impressive this year.

In County, National and International honours, no less than 21 sports were represented, in and out of school. We held three sports days for Pre-Prep, Junior and Senior school, despite the challenges of the British weather! Many records were broken at the Junior and Senior swimming galas.

TH tennis girls had a tough act to follow after playing at the World Championships last year, but there have been some fantastic performances for school, club and country.

The Year 8 team were runners up at the AEGON team tennis schools national competition and the U19 team were runners up at the National Aberdare Cup. Esther Adeshina achieved many successes this year, such as playing in the junior Wimbledon championships. She is the Hampshire and Isle of Wight 'Sportswoman of the Year' and is ranked number one nationally in the U14s. Leah GonzalesEdwards and Hannah Smith represented Team GB, with Hannah gaining a Tennis Europe singles title and three doubles titles.

Erin Richardson is the Nike International doubles champion and was part of the winning U18 National tennis team.

Some outstanding individual performances from pupils include Elizabeth Hood who came 5th in the triathlon European Cup, and Izzy Wedderburn who broke the Dorset school championship record in long jump (held since 1981). Izzy is now ranked 9th in the country.

It was a fantastic year in the pool for our swimmers in Junior and Senior School.

Harriet Perfect is currently ranked 3rd in the country for 200m backstroke, she attended the Olympic Trials and recently qualified for the European Championships.

Leonie Wiehle competed in the British Nationals, qualifying for three relays and the freestyle event and Ella-Rose Bowman, Holly Harris and Katie Mckenna all competed at county and regional competitions. In Junior School, Millie Sleeman made the IAPS national finals for 25m Butterfly and is now ranked 11th in the country.

In sailing, Eden Luke is a member of 'Team Impact' who won a cup at the J24 Europeans. Harriet Jessup came 8th in the Topper Nationals silver fleet. In volleyball, Charlotte Wittram is a member of the England Cadet squad who won gold at the National school games. In golf, Alex Cornell is in the England U16 SW regional squad and won the Nett Championship in the Dorset Ladies competition.

The indoor rowing relay team of Amelia Edwards, Francesca Rowley, Serena Sutherland and Charlotte Wittram is now 4th fastest in the country. Zelie Batchelor won the Royal International Horse Show and the U13 netball team finished top four in the country in the ISNC competition.

We had great success in County competitions, with 11 pupils invited to the Athletics county finals; the U4 indoor rowing squad were county champions for the third year running and U3 came 3rd in their competition. Our U12, U13 and U16 netball teams all reached the County final, with the U12 runners up and the U13 champions.

Emily Berridge and Francesca Rowley were selected to represent the county in hockey, Ella Pusey in football, Martha Pawson for cross country, Amy Bowen for cricket, and Jemma Lewis and Charlotte Kenwright for rugby. Maia Biles is county champion for her age group in table tennis. Nia Edwards, Elle Read and Jessie Bari all claimed victory in

their events at the athletics county championship and Luna Vitolo won gold in the Dorset and Hants Brazillian jiu-jitsu tournament.

I would like to to thank the pupils for their hard work and commitment throughout the year and their fantastic contribution to school sport.

I’d like to thank the parents for their continued support at events and fixtures, which is much appreciated. It has been a fantastic year in terms of achievement, but also in atmosphere and enthusiasm. The pupils go from strength to strength in their sports and I look forward to watching their progress again next year .

Miss Marks CHARITY FUNDRAISING REPORT 2015-2016 I would like to thank everyone for their support throughout the year. Once again, tutor groups have worked closely together to organise charity events. Great empathy towards others was shown by the pupils chosing to support local, national and global charities. These choices are sometimes dictated by personal circumstances within tutor groups (for example, cancer charities). Sales of cakes and chocolate remain a very popular fundraising method!

Once again, we raised funds for our partner school in Rwanda, with 232 runners from Pre Prep to the Sixth form completing various distances in our Run 4 Rwanda during the Bournemouth Marathon in October 2016.

It was a wonderful weekend with a great community spirit! The incredible £6000 raised by the iPledge 130 Challenge has made a huge difference to the lives of people in Rwanda through Dufatanye Nyanza, a farming cooperative supporting families affected by HIV/Aids. It supplies them with healthy food, housing and a means to support themselves by selling produce at market. The money we raised has provided a diesel pump and a new irrigation system for their banana plantation and fields.

I Grace reached the national final of the Rotary Musician of the Year competition.

I Mumford is a member of the National Youth Choir .

SPORT Athletics Talbot Heath competed successfully at Town Sports and 11 girls were invited to represent Bournemouth at the County Finals. From these, L Battistotti-Moore finished 3rd in the Dorset Schools shot putt.

S Sutherland is the shot putt County Champion and represented Dorset in the South of England Inter Counties, coming 4th.

I Wedderburn broke the Dorset School Championships record (from 1981) in long jump, competed at the English Schools and is now ranked 9th in the country.

Badminton O Nelson has shown real progress and has played Badminton at county competitions.

Cricket A Bowen has been selected for the U13 County Cricket Squad.

Cross Country M Pawson represented Hampshire in the SEAA Inter Counties and ran for Dorset in the English Schools Championships. Dorset’s winning team took home the Sidney Rose Trophy for the first time in 33 years .

Football E Pusey has played for the Hampshire Centre of Excellence, Yeovil Town Ladies and Dorset Schools, finishing in the top 4 in the Country .

Horse Riding and Showing Z Batchelor won a class in the Royal International Horse Show, currently holds the National title and is ranked top in the country for U18.

E Potter finished 6th place in the New Forest and Hampshire County Show for show jumping .

Indoor Rowing In U3, A Conley, P Conley, A Cowley, E Price-Lloyd and O Thomas won the Bournemouth Schools Competition and achieved a team bronze in the County Final.

In L4, E Bowman, O Burridge, A Chanoch, I O’Rourke and F Rowley won the Bournemouth Schools Competition and County Final.

A Chanoch won individual county gold and F Rowley won the silver.

Many girls represented school at the National competition. The team of A Edwards, S Suther-land, F Rowley and C Wittram is now the 4th fastest in the Country and narrowly missed the bronze.

Golf A Cornell is a member of the England Golf U16 South West Regional Squad and qualified for the England Girls’ U16 Open Amateur Champion-ships. She won the Nett Championships in the Dorset Ladies Competition and is a regular member of the Dorset Ladies Team .

There were many impressive individual performances, and S Sutherland finished 9th in the country as our highest ranked individual.

Gymnastics M Macdonald took part in the County Gymnastics Championships, finishing 5th in both the vault and the floor .

Karate G Davis is the British National Champion in Karate for Kumite and Team Kata .

Hockey E Berridge represented Dorset in the U16 team.

F Rowley came 2nd in the regional hockey finals with Bournemouth Hockey Club and was

Jiu-Jitsu L Vitolo won gold in the Dorset and Hants Brazillian Jiu-Jitsu Tournament.

Netball The U12 team were runners up at the Dorset Tournament.

U13 team finished top 4 in the country in the Independent Schools Cup Competition and also won the County final, Area Rally and the Bournemouth League.

H Perfect attended the Olympic Trials, she is currently ranked 3rd in the country for 200m back stroke and recently qualified for the European Championships.

The U16 team were runners up in the Area Netball Rally and reached the County finals in Budmouth.

Rugby C Kenwright and J Lewis have represented the Hampshire U18 team.

J Lewis was awarded an RFU Rugby Scholarship.

Sailing H Jessup finished 8th in the Topper Nationals silver fleet.

O Perera was 2nd in the Dorset Schools County Final.

S Holloway has competed internationally and is ranked in the top 20 in the UK. E Luke is part of a team called 'Team Impact' who won a cup at the J24 Europeans.

This cup is awarded annually for hard work, restoring and competing in their boat.

E Aldridge has been selected for the Olympic Sailing Development Squad for Tokyo 2020.

Squash H Walker-Date has been selected to be part of the U13 County Squad.

Stock Car Racing L Edbrooke now races in adult leagues and won the Caplin Cup at Ringwood Cheetahs racetrack.

Swimming E Bowman achieved a gold, 9 silver and 4 bronze medals at the County Championships, finishing as 3rd best individual in the county. She also competed in 8 events at the regionals.

H Harris has competed in both the county and regional competitions this year.

K McKenna achieved 4 bronze medals at the ASA County Championships as well as

L Wiehle competed in the British Nationals, qualifying for 3 relays and also the freestyle event Table Tennis M Biles is currently Number 1 in Dorset for the the U13s and played at the National Cadet Tournament.

Tennis The Year 8 girls were national runners up for the AEGON Team Tennis Schools competition.

The Year 10 team reached 3rd place at the Regional Finals for the AEGON Team Tennis Schools competition.

The U19 A Team were runners up at the National Aberdare Cup; with the B team gaining a regional 3rd place in the same competition.

E Adeshina played in the Junior Wimbledon Championships qualifying, won ITF doubles in Luxembourg, won U18 National Tour Finals (grade 1) and U18 National Club league winners. She is ranked Number 1 in U14 nationally and was runner up in singles and doubles at ITF Qatar. She is also the Hampshire and Isle of Wight Sportswoman and Tennis Player of the Year.

L Gonzales-Edwards represented Team GB, helping them to qualify for the Winter and Summer cups. She won the U12 singles title at the National grade 2 competition and reached the semi-finals in the doubles. She was also part of the winning West Hants team in the U12 Aegon Team Tennis Premier Title and won the U14 Surrey County Closed Title.

J Johnson-Cole finished 1st in the LTA Dorset adults Mixed Doubles League.

E Richardson is the Nike international Doubles Champion, the U18 National Team Tennis winner and the Open Team Tennis national runner up.

H Smith has represented GB in the Tennis

Europe team cup qualifiers. She gained a Tennis Europe singles title and 3 doubles titles. She is also an U12 Winter National Tour Final winner as well as U12 Team Tennis winner.

A Tyler finished runner up in the Aberdare Cup school team.

Triathlon E Hood finished 5th in the European Cup match in Austria and 19th at the European Junior Triathlon Championships representing GB. Volleyball C Wittram plays for Wessex Volleyball Club and won the National Grand Prix Championships. She also won the Beach Volleyball British Championships, and is a member of the Volleyball England Cadet squad who won gold at the Sheffield Open and gold at the National School Games .

He moved to Bournemouth in 1992 as Area Manager of Abbey National plc to manage their branch operations along the South Coast. Having retired from banking he is now Chairman of Bournemouth Churches’ Housing Association and a non-executive director of Hyped BCHA Ltd, Sequal Solutions Ltd and RECOOP Ltd. He is also Chair of Governors at St Michael’s Primary School and chairs Bournemouth Schools’ Forum. He is a co-opted member of Bournemouth Children’s Services Overview and Scrutiny Panel.

As a keen musician Graham is Director of Music for the parish of St John with St Michael, Bournemouth. His daughter was educated at Talbot Heath.

TIM BATTCOCK has been a consultant physician at Poole hospital since 1991. He is married to a local GP and they have three girls who have been educated at Talbot Heath.

Tim was born in Hertfordshire and qualified from Liverpool University Medical School in 1981. He worked in Merseyside, then for three years in Leicester, before moving to the south coast. He has always had a large

interest in medical education and is currently responsible for the education of all junior doctors at Poole hospital.

He also has regional roles for medical education and is censor of the Royal College of Physicians London, involved with national examinations and education of physicians.

He is a trustee of the Hunterian Museum at the Royal College of Surgeons. His outside interests are entertainment, entertaining and competition.

CHERRY EDWARDS has extensive experience of managing education and training. She started as a teacher and youth leader in Oxford, then spent seven years as a careers counsellor, based in the north of England and specialising in post ‘A’ level occupations.

After a career break, she worked for a company which managed work-based learning and placements for young people and adults. In the 1990s she developed new Apprenticeship models with employers and colleges and in 1996 joined Bournemouth and Poole College, becoming Head of Work Based Learning.

Latterly she has worked as an education and training consultant, with local schools, colleges and employers.

DIANA LEADBETTER is a former pupil of Talbot Heath Junior School. She completed her degree in Business Studies and trained as a Chartered Accountant with KPMG, qualifying in 1989.

Diana subsequently joined her family business and gained experience in all aspects of the business. She is now the Finance Director, and her principal day to day role revolves around the financial and administrative management of the company including HR and Company Secretarial work.

Diana is married with one daughter who was educated at Talbot Heath. She has been a PSS Year Group Representative in both the Junior and Senior Schools.

ANDREW MAIN is a ‘hybrid’ with 17 years in industry and the last 20 as a lecturer and academic manager at Bournemouth University.

He grew up in London, gained a PhD in engineering computation, was employed for eight years and freelance in the Bournemouth area for nine, working with manufacturing and process industries process quality and productivity.

He joined the Dorset Institute of Higher Education in 1989 (which in quick successsion became Bournemouth Polytechnic and then Bournemouth University), where he is Associate Dean (Students), School of Design, Engineering & Computing He also teaches computing.

Academic management focuses on the student experience. His own company has undertaken IT projects in his free time.

His five children all went to school in Bournemouth and he was previously a governor of St Mark’s School in Talbot Village and Bournemouth School for Girls.

CHRISTINE NORMAN was Public Relations Manager for a large housing charity for nine years with a particular responsibility for organising annual conferences and major fundraising banquets. She is now a legal assistant/secretary in her husband’s private legal practice.

Her daughter was educated at Talbot Heath and during that time she became very involved in the Parent Staff Society, retiring as Deputy Chairman in 2000.

RON PEAK is a “Man of Kent” having been born and educated in the city of Canterbury.

He qualified as a Surveyor and worked for Whitbread and Company for 33 years during which time he managed a variety of professsional teams engaged in the acquisition, development and refurbishment of sites in London and the south east. Although considerable emphasis was placed on the development of new strategic sites for hotels, restaurants and licensed houses, his role also included responsibility for the refurbishment and development of branded concepts in the Group’s existing estate in the south east region.

For the past 10 years he has been employed

by Bournemouth Churches Housing Association and is responsible for the development and maintenance of its property portfolio.

Talbot Heath Governors’ Biographies CHRISTOPHER RUTLEDGE read Sociology at London University, Theology at Sarum Theological College and Cambridge University, and took an MPhil and a PhD at the University of Wales.

He was ordained in the Anglican Church in 1970 and for the past 28 years has been Vicar of St Mark’s, Talbot Village. He served on the Salisbury Diocesan Board of Education for 10 years, and is a Canon of Salisbury Cathedral.

From 2004 to 2009 he was the Chaplain of Talbot Heath School, and his daughter was educated here.

RACHEL SMALL started her career in the City but retrained as a solicitor, qualifying in 1993. Rachel moved with her family to Bournemouth in 1998 and was a partner of Lester Aldridge solicitors from 2000-07, predominantly dealing in commercial litigation.

Rachel is now Head of Legal & Deputy Company Secretary for LV=, Liverpool Victoria Friendly Society, leading a team of 10 lawyers and assistants for the LV= Group.

Rachel has been involved with the Talbot Heath Parent Staff Society since her two daughters started Junior School in 1998/9 and was Treasurer of the PSS from 2007-10.

She was appointed as a Governor in 2010.

SALLY THOMAS attended Talbot Heath between 1973 and 1984. She graduated from Exeter University after studying Law. Sally studied for her Law Society Finals at Bristol. She returned to Bournemouth in 1988, joined a local firm of solicitors and became a partner. She has worked locally as a solicitor, specialising in property law, until 2007.

Sally is married and has two young children.

DAVID TOWNEND is an experienced entrepreneur. He was born in London and brought up in Bath.

Since moving to Bournemouth in 1983, he has supported a number of businesses and driven them to achieve significant growth.

His background is in IT and he has extensive experience in the aviation, energy and internet sectors and he currently has a number of local business interests.

His youngest daughter was educated at Talbot Heath from 2003 to 2009.

CLODIE SUTCLIFFE was educated at Talbot Heath from 1980 to 1987, following in her mother’s footsteps. She was Deputy Head Girl in her final year.

She graduated from Warwick University with a degree in Physical Education and Mathematics and then went on to teach at Wentworth College, where she was Head of Physical Education.

In 1999 she had a change of career, joining the Dorset Police and being promoted to Sergeant in 2004 and to Inspector in 2008.

Her current role is as a Critical Incident Inspector, covering Bournemouth, Poole and Christchurch.

She lives locally with her husband and three energetic spaniels and competes in triathlons!
