“ ended up really being a blessing in disguise, for less than I would have paid for a hotel room at Pinehurst Resort I had a two bedroom condo with all the accommodations of home.” - Rob Spellman, “Pinehurst: The Talamore Way” as seen in the Golf Aficionado

fter spending four days in a row on Mid South as my daughter’s caddy during the 2018 Teen World Championships, I fell in love with the course. In fact, when we left town it felt like breaking up with a girlfriend, and boy she was a hottie! Mid South is an Arnold Palmer design still fresh off a complete renovation in 2017. Mid South was only 25 years young when Talamore decided it

was time to renovate. The renovation was managed in-house and the team at Talamore did an amazing job. Having walked every inch of the course I can tell you they didn’t leave a stone unturned. The course is in meticulous condition and the greens are back to their original size when the course opened in 1993.

Having played Pinehurst No 2. during the trip, I would say compared to Mid South, Pinehurst No. 2 is as flat as a pancake. It’s not just the terrain at Mid South but the course has a perfect mix of bunkers and water hazards that heighten the challenge while rounding out a world-class design.

Compared to other courses in the Pinehurst area, the terrain at Mid South is much more diverse.

WHY PLAY NO. 2 WHEN YOU CAN PLAY NO. 1?

BY NATE OXMAN STAFF WRITER GOLF RESORT AND DESTINATION MAGAZINE

It’s called the Home of American Golf for a reason people.

acreage a pure oasis for golf vacationers of all sorts.

Ever since his eminence Donald Ross came to Pinehurst in the early 20th century and set up camp at the fledgling resort so he could create and ultimately perfect the famed No. 2 course, the sandhills of North Carolina have hosted everyone of note in the game of golf: it’s greatest champions and championships, its mosttalented architects and entrepreneurs.

Its proof of success is in Golf Advisor’s annual Golfers’ Choice rankings of the best golf courses in the U.S. Unlike many other industry lists, these awards are solely based on an accumulation of reviews from recreational golfers. They are currently available on the new GolfPass.com, the game’s most comprehensive digital destination and membership program powered by NBC Sports.

The legacies all of those have left help the Pinehurst area stand pat as one of the top golf trip destinations in the United States despite the recent arrival of worthy competitors around the country. Beg to differ? Sorry. The people have spoken. Like Ross, who spent roughly 30 years fine-tuning his work on No. 2, those at the helm of the Talamore Golf Resort less than five miles away in Southern Pines have spent the last three decades working tirelessly to make its all-encompassing

18

For Talamore Golf Resort, it was total domination, highlighted by its position as the No. 1 public golf course in North Carolina. “I was excited to say the least,” said PGA General Manager Matt Hausser on his reaction to the results. “I first saw the top 50 rankings and as I looked through the site I saw the state by state rankings so I instantly thought ‘was there another a course in NC ahead of us in the Top 50?’ I did not think so

www.TalamoreGolfResort.com • (800) 552-6292, Option 2

and the page could not load fast enough. But when it did I saw Talamore was No 1! Our Superintendent, David Walsh, was with me when we saw that. It was awesome.” In addition, Talamore was ranked No. 22 in the “Top 25 U.S. golf courses for Course Conditions.” In the past year, Talamore impressively received nothing but 5-star and 4-star ratings in the course conditions category from visiting golfers, who were spoiled to a Rees Jones golf course at its finest courtesy of a multimillion dollar remastering in 2016. “The project was an absolute success, even before this ranking came out,” said Hausser. “We have heard from guests for a number of years that Talamore had the best greens in our area and this furthers that point. David and his crew have done an amazing job with the golf course. This ranking is a reflection of that. We’re very proud of the team.”

“The renovation put us in an overdrive gear to strive for success now that we had the tools and capabilities to do so,” added Walsh. “Hard work from myself and my team have brought an even bigger light to a great and overdue renovation of this course.” The highly-acclaimed project on what has been renamed “The New Course at Talamore” focused heavily on increasing playability, accomplished by converting greens from bent grass to Champion Bermuda to provide consistently pristine putting surfaces while expanding them by 20 percent to fill “The Open Doctor’s” original pads and adding 60-inch TifEagle Bermuda collars. “The last four years have been some of the best greens conditions this place has ever seen,” said Walsh. “I believe these greens have went to a level beyond their peak and the comments and expressions from the golfers have complimented that statement.

19

They were very firm in the beginning, almost too much. They have become a little more receptive to the ball over the past couple of years. The golfers are very positive and complimentary about the greens. We get loads of comments about how quick and fast the greens are. Some say they are the best greens they have ever played. They also speak about how true the ball roll is on them even though they are Bermuda.” To add to the new player-friendly feel and significantly speed up pace of play at Talamore, 62 bunkers were removed and landing areas both off the tee and around the green were widened.

“We offer 2 pig pickings a week for our guests and we include breakfast. A lot of resources have went into both golf courses, Mid South Club and Talamore, as well as clubhouse renovations at both facilities. We have also tried to greatly improve our customer service the last few years and have been successful in that area as well. But at the end of the golf courses are the main attractions and we have 2 fantastic courses!”

A venue never short on innovation

These accolades add to Talamore’s impressive resume that also includes being recognized as the Village of Pinehurst Area Chapter of the National Golf Course Owners Association’s (NGCOA) “Course of the Year” in 2018.

dating back its days offering llama caddies, Talmore also built 12 Scottish golfstyle sod wall bunkers, the only such hazards in the sandhills. Equally impressive is its placement at No. 9 in the “Top 50 U.S. Golf Courses,” an overall ranking determined by over 265,000 reviews for public courses in 10 areas including Most Improved, Value, Layout, Staff Friendliness, Pace of Play, Off-Course Amenities and the aforementioned Course Conditions. “For the past few years we have strived to have “hospitality included” with stays at Talamore Golf Resort,” said Hausser. 20

Overall, 100% of golfers who reviewed Talamore gave it their full recommendation to others.

And if all of that wasn’t enough, Talamore also upgraded its fabulous array of amenities while focusing on that “hospitality included” approach. The club unveiled the Talamore Pavilion, home to the highly-popular Pig Pickin’ Dinner every Monday and Thursday from April through October. The classic Carolina-style barbeque

buffet boasts a whole roast pig, and delicious sides and drinks. The Talamore Pavilion is open daily and available free of charge to Talamore Villa guests, who also enjoy complimentary breakfast delivered right to their door. The Pavilion is one in a long list of perks for those who choose to make the Talamore Villas part of their golf getaway. The Villas, perhaps the most popular on-site accommodations in the entire Pinehurst area, feature full kitchens, WIFI access, washer/dryer, two bathrooms, daily maid service, as well as access to Talamore’s pool and cabanas, and its 2.5-mile jogging trail and 95-acre lake. A wide range of extremely affordable golf packages are available at Talamore Golf Resort, many of which include access to its sister property, the private Mid South

Club. The only Arnold Palmer design in the Sandhills, Mid South Club received a similar facelift to The New Course at Talamore in 2017, most notably expanding its greens by 40 percent and converting the putting surfaces from bent to Champion Bermuda. Among the most attractive vacation packages are the Midland Road Masters at the new Palmer Cottage, a four-bedroom, four-bath charmer that sleeps up to eight and includes TVs in each room, a living room, game room, full kitchen, backyard patio with grille, washer/dryer and WIFI. Starting at just $428 per person, the package includes three nights of lodging and four rounds of golf, one each at Mid South Club, The New Course at Talamore, and Donald Ross gems Mid Pines and Pine Needles.

PINEHURST BREWING COMPANY GAINS NATIONAL NOTICE Pinehurst Brewing Company recently garnered high praise from a food critic and travel writer for USA Today. On Wednesday, the newspaper published a laudatory online review of the budding brewpub, which opened its doors in October. Writer Larry Olmsted singled out the establishment’s food menu and atmosphere. “Everything is solidly enjoyable comfort food, so it is really hard to go wrong here, while the ambiance is just amazing,” he wrote. “That may explain why so many people keep coming back and why everyone I talked to, from cab drivers to caddies, urged me to go and try the place.” Writing about the beer lineup, Olmsted said he was “wowed” by the Malvavisco imperial stout. The beer, he wrote, is “rich and creamy with a velvety texture – and a whopping 12.75 percent alcohol by volume.” Chief brewer Eric Mitchell is no stranger to plaudits. He was recruited to Pinehurst from Heist Brewery in Charlotte, where his concoctions won praise from Beer Advocate Magazine and other niche publications. Still, the review in USA Today, one of the most circulated newspapers in the nation, is likely to bring considerable exposure to the seven-month-old establishment in Pinehurst. Cradle THE

Pinehurst Short Course -789 yds-

THE CRADLE: PINEHURST’S PAR-3 SHORT COURSE IS LONG ON FUN Famed golf architect Gil Hanse would find himself at a stopping point while working at one of the most prestigious golf destinations in the country. He’d shut down the canary-colored bulldozer he was driving, hop down to the upended turf and take a walk. Hanse would stroll about 30, 40, maybe 50 feet from the dozer, and with his dusty golf cap pulled down far, nearly obstructing the view of his stylish sunglasses, he’d fold his arms and gaze over the land. After a few minutes, he’d nod to himself, unfold his arms and slowly walk back and up into the cockpit of the dozer, his eyes focused on the ground immediately in front of him. This was Hanse’s daily process in the weeks after he broke ground on what can only be described as a monumental moment in Pinehurst history. After all, even with nine golf courses already, building a new course at Pinehurst will always be a big deal. But this course is different. This is The Cradle, Pinehurst Resort’s 9-hole par-3 short course. And it’s another example of the myriad ways Pinehurst continues to evolve and adapt for today’s travelers and guests. Pete M. CAFE Our History... Vince Continenza purchased Ironwood, originally called Ironwood Cafe, on May 22, 2006. Initially, he kept the existing staff, as well as the original menu. One morning, after month two of ownership, Vince walked through the door and instantly felt like an intruder in someone else’s restaurant. This is when he began making Ironwood a place of his own. Over the next few months, significant changes were made to the restaurant, including a new layout in parts of the dining area and the introduction of a new menu. After these changes were made, he walked through the door, stood back, looked around and proudly said, “Now this is my restaurant”. Many more changes and improvements have followed over the years, making the Ironwood one of the Pinehurst/Southern Pines area’s most popular and successful dining establishments. Our Unique Setting... Tucked in between the towering North Carolina pines along historic Midland Road, guests park their cars in the surrounding natural sand and pine needles and enter through Ironwood’s signature patchwork door. There they are warmly greeted by a smiling hostess or by Vince himself. Ironwood’s atmosphere is both inviting and casual. Bar seating includes high-top tables, and flat-screen TV’s for viewing the day’s golf and sports coverage. The separate dining room is modern, spacious and airy, while the patio offers a taste of true Southern hospitality with al fresco dining under old southern magnolias and features a stunning fire-enhanced fountain. 58
