The unique “no-till’ method ensured that the original contours of the greens were meticulously maintained. I expected Mid South to be pretty good, but quite honestly, this exceeded my expectations. First off, it’s in perfect shape following the reopening in September after new Champion Bermuda greens were installed. The new greens recovered lost greens surface, but more than that, they rolled and looked perfect. As for the rest of the course, it was flawless as well, but even more importantly, this is a really fun course to play. Each hole KING’S COURSE has its own identity, there’s plenty of water and bunkers that come into play, and the course has more than its share of signature holes. The par-4 16th, with water off the tee and the approach, is one of the best, but I also liked the preceding par 5 as well as the finishing holes on both nines that share a common green.

Review:
No doubt Talamore is one of the Sandhills hidden gems and better values. Renovated in 2016, this Rees Jones layout is solid in every way and in excellent shape, including the yearold Champion Bermuda greens. With plenty of elevation change, doglegs and terrific bunkering (adding sod wall bunkers were part of the renovation), Talamore is a really nice championship level course that is truly playable by all levels of golfers. It’s also a great starting or ending point for any trip to this year. For those on somewhat of a budget, Talamore Golf Resort offers terrific packages that can also include Talamore’s sister course, the wonderful Mid South Club, as well as nearby gems like Mid Pines and Pine Needles, which have also been perfectly restored. In addition, those staying at the resort get free breakfast and barbecue pork dinner on Thursday evenings.

...remastered
The goal of the 25th anniversary Remastering Plan was to reimagine the tract through a clever combination of restoration and rejuvenation projects that unlock the course’s hidden potential. The project was executed by a huge team including course superintendent David Walsh and his staff, and PGA professional and general manager Matt Hausser. Alongside the Resort’s staff were the skilled crews of Shapemasters, a world-class certified Golf Course builder that has worked for many of the major modern era golf course designers including Jack Nicklaus, Rees Jones, Arnold Palmer, Pete and P.B. Dye, Tom Fazio and Greg Norman (www.shapemasters.com).

Original Greens Design Honored through Meticulous Restoration Greens were restored to the original Rees Jones 1991 design, resulting in a 20 percent larger putting surface, and the addition of generous 60-inch Tif Eagle Bermuda green collars. The new Champion Bermuda putting surfaces provide significantly better playing conditions than its bent grass predecessor and have put Talamore’s greens on par with the other top courses in the area that have already made the switch to Bermuda greens – Pinehurst No. 2, No. 8, Country Club of North Carolina, Pine Needles, Mid Pines and Tobacco Road.

Unique Challenges Introduced At Talamore, “Scotland and the
Playability and Pace of Play Enhanced. The course feels and is
bigger with the fairways opened up, limited rough and the removal of excessive bunkering, with 75% of all bunkers eliminated. Improved cart access and the reshaping of certain areas to help cart flow will increase pace of play by at least 30 minutes per round.
“Scotland and the NC Sandhills Collide” with the addition of 12 strategically placed, old-world style sod wall bunkers. Talamore is the only course in the Village of Pinehurst/Southern Pines area with multiple sod wall bunkers and soon to come sod wall bunker cams, providing a live feed of bunker action straight to the Clubhouse for spectator enjoyment.
