Issue: What Makes Us

A guide through the TAKT collection

In this issue of TAKT Magazine, we invite you to join us on a journey — a journey through the products and principles that define our commitment to refined Danish design, crafted with care for people and the planet.

As we declared when we founded TAKT:

TAKT is the furniture company rethinking the way to design, build and sell furniture. We believe in bringing high-quality design to more people in revolutionary, environmentally friendly and transparent ways. TAKT looks to the future with our sights set far beyond furniture.

The world needs fresh ideas on how to create quality goods in a way that’s both inclusive and responsible — ensuring we don’t compromise the health of our planet. That’s why we’re taking on this challenge by creating eco-certified Danish furniture, combining timeless craftsmanship with mindful production methods.

We’re on a mission. Will you join us?

Rethinking the furniture business

“TAKT builds on the best from our past with the innovations of today so more people can enjoy high quality design.”

Certifications

Certified B Corporation

Certified B Corporations are businesses that meet the highest standards of transparency, responsibility, sustainability, and performance –with the aim of generating value for the business as well as the society and environment. To balance profit and purpose.

Our certification is your validation that we do what we say and that we are committed to bringing positive change.

Since our last certification, we have increased our score significantly from 100.8 to 118.1 – an improvement that is a testament to our relentless dedication to making better choices.

EU-Ecolabel certified

All products we sell are eco-certified for the benefit of you, your family and the planet. The EU-Ecolabel validates an end-to-end commitment to sustainability in material sourcing, production, repairability and recyclability. We only use wood from sustainable forests and we only use natural oils or water based lacquers, that make the products durable while emphasising the delicate structure of the wood without unnecessary chemicals. Our products are constructed and tested for durability and have a five-year warranty. They can be separated out into key materials for recycling and worn parts can be replaced.

FSC certified wood

All our wood comes from FSC® certified forests. Trees are not harvested faster that the forest can regenerate itself, and consideration of the local wildlife is taken into account, as well as the well-being of the forest workers.

Tested for durability

All TAKT furniture is constructed for durability and comes with an extended 5 year warranty. Our furniture is tested according to the strictest intermational standards at the Danish Technological Institute. The Danish Technological Institute is among Europe’s foremost furniture test labs with state-of-the-art equipment for both European and North American testing standards.

Our test lab is accredited according to EU standards: - Europe: EN domestic and non-domestic

Transparency at our core

At TAKT, we believe transparency is essential to progress. It empowers our users to make informed decisions about the impact of their furniture, and it helps us focus our efforts on continual improvement.

For us, sustainability is not a fixed destination but an ongoing journey. Our goal is to create meaningful and beautiful products and services that minimize our environmental footprint – to be a positive contribution.

TAKT takes a multi-pronged approach to reducing emissions and climate compensating our products.

1. We establish transparency to the carbon footprint during the full life cycle of each of our product. From materials, production, transport, use and disposal.

2. We verify our carbon footprint calculations through an external body. We use the Danish company MÅLBAR for this verification.

3. We continually work to reduce the carbon footprint across all parts of the life cycle.

4. We offset the remaining carbon footprint by investing in activities that directly remove carbon from the atmosphere (not quotas and not indirect emission reductions).

Climate footprint

Explore how the CO2eq impact is mapped in every stage of our product’s life cycle.

Products are still the biggest contributor to our footprint (59%), and therefore our biggest focus.

We continually work to create clarity in the climate footprint of each of our products. We have mapped the CO2eq impact during the entire process from basic materials to production, shipping, daily use and the final disposal after many years of use. This way, you can see the composition of the climate footprint on each of our product pages on our website.

We hope that you will be able to get a broader understanding of the environmental impact of your TAKT furniture. These insights are vital for us to prioritize and direct our efforts towards reducing emissions. As we introduce new initiatives, the calculations on the product pages may be updated to provide you with the most up-to-date information.

Below, you can find an example of a product’s carbon footprint calculations.

Climate footprint measured in kg CO2eq. Calculated according to the PEF standard from the European Commission and verified by Bureau Veritas.

Soft Bench is a familiar form with a versatile sensibility. Its soft curves embody an honest design language in which all parts are visible and a part of the experience.

This design shows an intelligent application of molded veneer, rendering it like a cloth surrounding the construction in oak. Its distinct style arises as an expression of the material used and its properties.

Soft Bench is crafted from oak, a wood species with a beautiful, textured pattern that gives it a distinctive and natural look. Its unpretentious design pairs perfectly with oak, a material whose natural variations between dark and light reflect seasonal changes. The bench’s surface is treated with white-pigmented oil or water-based lacquer. Oil treatments develop a rich patina over time and allow easy surface repairs with sanding and reapplication.

Good design is in constant conversation with the past, present and future. Arc Chair by Depping & Jørgensen references a classic Danish aesthetic while carefully introducing environmentally focused values and modern craftsmanship. The archetypal unibody section that functions as both back and arm rest is a Danish archetype that dates back more than 200 years and was first inspired by furniture from ancient Greece.

Special attention has been given to the balance of materials in Arc Chair’s design. The slender steel

tubes lend a light, modern and airy appearance to the chair, whereas the wooden seat and back provide warm, tactile comfort at the contact points. The result is a chair that is easy to move around the home, providing a comfortable, familiar seat wherever you need it.

We also offer a selection of environmentally friendly and traceable upholstery options.

by Cecilie Manz 2020

Plint is a versatile piece of furniture with the size and shape to cater for several occasions in any room of your home.

Cecilie Manz’s ingenious solution reduces the entire furniture to just two components: tabletop and apron The top and side pieces are cut from a single, flawless piece of oak, which is handselected and cut precisely from timber logs to create the desired surface texture and grain. The finished planks are then machined to ensure the highest possible degree of precision before the leather components are fixed into place. This allows it to be shipped in a nar-

row, completely flat package, and to be delightfully assembled with ease: no need for glue, bolts or screws.

The leather detail is crafted from premium, chrome-free leather sourced from Tärnsjö Garveri, a Swedish tannery specializing in eco-friendly vegetable tanning with bark extracts. The furniture top connects to the legs with leather hinges, while a leather loop on the apron secures through a support aperture with an octagonal wedge. This wedge, inspired by traditional ‘pegged stretcher’ joinery, ensures a stable and robust assembly.

The Cross Bar Chair embodies the Scandinavian design principles of craft, simplicity and elegance in a design that was circular from the start – environmentally friendly to produce, made to last, easy and intuitive to assemble from flatpack, and properly repairable and recyclable. To create it, Pearson Lloyd took the innovation at the heart of the original design – the eponymous cross structure beneath the seat –and optimised it for bar-stool scale. Cross Bar Chair brings the timeless aesthetic of the Cross design

into high seating areas as bars and countertops. The resultant design is available at two seat heights – 75 cm for bars and 65 cm for countertops. Eco System Design Principles

01 Truly useful

The world has too many useless design objects. We believe that before we put another object into the world we have to ask ourselves; Is this really necessary? A new object shall add to what is already there. It can be a new function, a more environmentally friendly way of producing or an improvement of something that we know.

02 Clarity in design

Form and function must be understandable for the user. Clarity in the construction and the way we handle the details is an important part of making long lasting designs.

04

Made from good and honest materials that age with beauty and have minimal environmental impact

The ageing of materials is very important for long lasting design. Our furniture is designed and produced to last for many years, and we believe in using only quality natural materials such as wood, leather, wool and steel. If treated well, they will only become more beautiful as they age.

05 Constructed for durability

Good design must be able to withstand the use over time. We always let an independent testing house validate the durability of our furniture according to international standards, and we give an extended warranty of 5 years.

03 Presence and personality

Good design is more than just functionality. It contributes with a positive atmosphere. Design tells us about ourselves, who we are and who we want to be. They set an atmosphere around our lives and contributes to our well-being.

06

Traceable and certified manufacturing and material sourcing

As a part of the EU-Ecolabel and FSC® certification our materials and production lives up to the highest international standards.

System Principles

07

Packaged for minimal environmental transport impact and damage

All of our furniture are shipped component based as flat packs, which itself is made from recycled materials. We can pack 5-7 more products in the same volume and therefore minimise CO2 emissions during transportation.

08

Delightful to assemble by the user

Assembling your new TAKT furniture should be an opportunity to connect with your new piece in a delightful way. You feel the quality of the materials and the dimensions. You understand the joints and the connections. You build an appreciation for the piece of craftsmanship that you acquired.

09

Easily repaired by replaceable components

Our component based approach is an important part of being really cyclical and environmentally friendly. If any part for some reason should need replacement, you can order a new part and replace it easily. You don’t have to throw the whole piece out, and you can infinitely maintain your furniture.

Our design principles allow us to consistently focus on the right things as we develop new products. They can act as positive resistances and help unleash creativity in a focused way for designers. It helps us to ensure that the right problems are solved, and that circularity and sustainability become an integrated part of the design.

10

Properly recyclable by disassembly into key materials

If you at one point should decide to discard of your piece (not sure why, though) – you can disassemble it into key materials and ensure that each material get recycled or upcycled so the materials can be used again.
