Our need for new furniture and good design, supporting daily needs, will continue to evolve, as our lifestyle changes. We shouldn’t stop improving our everyday lives and design new furniture. Instead, we ought to produce, distribute and consume differently – with greater care. Good design must continue to bring joy and presence. We aim to clearly explain the efforts we make to help you live sustainably. There is too much hot air when it comes to sustainability. We are different. Aiming to clearly explain the efforts we make to help you live sustainably, we believe in transparency and recognised external certification. This is the only way for you to ensure that there is substance behind it all. We can only encourage you to look for facts and recognized certifications with any brand you consider engaging with. 21

Made from good and honest materials that age with beauty and have minimal environmental impact

The world has to many useless design objects. We believe that before we put another object into the world we have to ask ourselves; Is this really necessary? A new object shall add to what is already there. It can be a new function, a more sustainable way of producing or an improvement of something that we know.

The ageing of materials is very important for long lasting design. Our furniture is designed and produced to last for many years, and we believe in using only quality natural materials such as wood, leather, wool and steel. If treated well, they will only become more beautiful as they age.

Clarity in design

Constructed for durability

Form and function must be understandable for the user. Clarity in the construction and the way we handle the details is an important part of making long lasting designs.

Good design must be able to withstand the use over time. We always let an independent testing house validate the durability of our furniture according to international standards, and we give an extended warranty of 5 years.

Traceable and certified manufacturing and material sourcing

Good design is more than just functionality. It contributes with a positive atmosphere. Design tells us about ourselves, who we are and who we want to be. They set an atmosphere around our lives and contributes to our well-being.

Packaged for minimal environmental transport impact and damage

Properly recyclable by disassembly into key materials

All of our furniture are shipped component based as flat packs, which itself is made from recycled materials. We can pack 5-7 more products in the same volume and therefore minimise CO2 emissions during transportation.

If you at one point should decide to discard of your piece (not sure why, though) – you can disassemble it into key materials and ensure that each material get recycled or upcycled so the materials can be used again.

08 Delightful to assemble by the user Assembling your new TAKT furniture should be an opportunity to connect with your new piece in a delightful way. You feel the quality of the materials and the dimensions. You understand the joints and the connections. You build an appreciation for the piece of craftsmanship that you acquired.

09 Easily repaired by replaceable components Our component based approach is an important part of being really cyclical and sustainable. If any part for some reason should need replacement, you can order a new part and replace it easily. You don’t have to throw the whole piece out, and you can infinitely maintain your furniture. 29

For many, design is about organizing our surroundings with beauty. A little broader, it is also about the idea of the good life – that the home is both functional, but also gives peace to recharge. The home must at the same time inspire and be the safe base that allows us to meet the world with renewed energy and curiosity. Unfortunately, the design industry has largely forgotten the slightly broader perspective; that objects can also represent good values in addition to neatness. “The good taste is always bad” said Poul Henningsen (PH), the danish architect and critic, and in Denmark we have a proud tradition of design objects that represents more than just simply ‘ the good taste’. We are facing a paradigm shift in relation to production and consumption, and we have to remember that when design is at its best, it helps solve problems and find answers. That is why it requires special attention when we spend resources on producing new. Both designers and industry have a great responsibility to ensure that all design objects are produced responsibly in relation to people and material consumption. The consumer culture is facing a fundamental change, where we 30

must learn to consume and produce differently and with greater care. Where the generations after World War II lifted the material prosperity of the many, we must now save the planet! As a consumer, you are often met with empty phrases about sustainability. It is an industry where there is a lot of greenwashing, and it can be difficult to understand where you as a consumer can make a difference and thus contribute to a world with more sustainable design. The great commodity of the future is trust. You must be able to trust that the product you buy is properly produced, the materials are recyclable and that the people who have participated have had proper working and salary conditions. TAKT believes that this trust is absolutely crucial and that is why we use the EU-Ecolabel as a certification on all our products, which ensures that we live up to a standard. On all our furniture there is a third-party approval that acts as the consumer’s assurance that what we say also live up to international standards for sustainability. Our need for new furniture and designs that

support everyday needs will continue to evolve as our lifestyles change. We must not stop completely improving our everyday lives and designing new furniture and objects, but instead produce and distribute differently and with greater care. Good design must continue to bring joy and presence in everyday life. In order to achieve that, we have set up 10 points, we call them TAKT Eco System Design Principles which we believe a good design product should contain. We use the principles when we develop new furniture together with designers. Throughout history, architects and designers have regularly set criteria for how to ensure both good architecture and good design objects. If we go all the way back to the Roman architect and engineer Vitruvius, the world’s first architectural theorist, we find the earliest design principles. Vitruvius believed that every building should stand on three legs; Firmitas, Utilitas and Venustas. Durability, usability and beauty. These principles are very general, but in their basic understanding they are fully valid today, more than 2000 years after they were written down.

In the late 1970s, Dieter Rams became increasingly concerned about his own contribution to a world of more and more objects, asking the question: “Is my design good design? “. His answer was expressed in 10 principles of good design. Later, Muji expressed their design values in 6 principles of how to design. We see great value in establishing design principles. They can act as positive resistances and help unleash creativity in a focused way for designers and help ensure that the right problems are solved. Furthermore, TAKT has a strong focus on sustainability and certification with the EU-Ecolabel which demands a series of outcome requirements. Here our design principles help to achieve the goal.

Always EU-Ecolabel certified All products we sell are eco-certified for the benefit of you, your family and the planet. The EU-Ecolabel validates an end-to-end commitment to sustainability in material sourcing, production, repairability and recyclability. We only use wood from sustainable forests. We only use natural oils or water based lacquers, that make the products durable while emphasising the delicate structure of the wood without unnecessary chemicals. Our products are constructed and tested for durability and have a five-year warranty. They can be separated out into key materials for recycling and worn parts can be replaced.

These certifications are your insurance that our products and our company meet the highest standards of transparency, responsibility and sustainability. In addition to these important certifications, we are sharing specific and detailed lifetime CO2e calculations for all our products.

When we talk about climate change, we often tend to focus on carbon dioxide emissions (CO2) — the most dominant greenhouse gas that comes from burning fossil fuels, industrial production, and land use. However, CO2 is not the only greenhouse gas that is driving climate change. There are a number of other gases that significantly contribute to global warming, all of which together are quantified in one single metric called CO2e. 42

An informed basis to make sustainable choices We have worked intensively to create clarity in the climate footprint of each of our products. We have mapped the CO2e impact during the entire process from basic materials to production, shipping, daily use and the final disposal after many years of use. This way, you can see the composition of the climate footprint on each of our product pages.

We hope that you will get a sense for the environmental impact of preparing your TAKT furniture. We use these insights very tangibly to focus and prioritize our further efforts to keep driving down emissions. As we implement new efforts, you may see the calculations on the product pages change so we keep the latest scores available to you. Our approach to carbon transparency and compensation At TAKT we believe in a multi-pronged approach to reducing emissions and climate compensating our products. 1. W e establish transparency to the carbon footprint during the full life cycle of each of our product. From materials, production, transport, use and disposal.

2. We ensure verification of our carbon footprint calculation by an external body. We use the Danish company MÅLBAR for this verification. 3. We continually work to reduce the carbon footprint across all parts of the life cycle. 4. We offset the remaining carbon footprint by investing in activities that directly remove carbon from the atmosphere (not quotas and not indirect emission reductions). Our approach is aligned with ‘The Oxford Offsetting Principles’ published by Oxford University in 2020 as credible guidelines to help ensure that offsetting actually helps to achieve a net zero society. We purchase these CO2 removal certificates through Puro, a Finnish-based market place for

verified carbon removal projects. You will not be surprised that we have a soft spot for wood, which also includes the environmental benefits of this wonderful material. We invest in projects that support wood based building materials that have net-negative CO2 impact on the atmosphere. Through our offsetting donations, we can thereby ensure that good wood-based building materials can replace carbon polluting traditional building elements. To the right you can see an example of a carbon footprint overview for one of our products. You will be able to see overviews like these on each of the product pages. They represent the latest status on our products and reflect our unique approach to delivering high quality design furniture in sustainable ways. As an example, some of the environmental benefits already reflected in the Cross Chair assessment include: Materials By consistently only using wood from sustain44

ably managed forests (i.e., FSC certified), we have reduced CO2e impact from our wooden materials by 40%. Surface treatment By moving away from traditional Polyurethane lacquer to water based lacquers and oils, we have reduced the lifetime CO2e impact of our surface treatment by 48% (even including the impact from later retreating your furniture with oil after years of use). Packaging By optimizing our recycled cardboard and flat-packing our furniture, we have both reduced damage during transport and reduced the CO2e impact of the packaging materials by 26% Transport By flat-packing our furniture we have reduced carbon emissions during transport by 56%.

Wood was one of the very first materials used by humans to create useful objects and although many new materials have since come into existence, it still holds a central place in our minds. The growth and appearance of trees are even compared to the human body: the roots are their feet, the trunk is the body, the branches as arms. Wood is alive; just like the human body, it reacts physically to its environment and position. We maintain quality by sourcing the best materials, but we do it with a bigger picture in mind — the effects of what we do on our planet. Our wood comes from FSC® certified forests. Trees are not harvested faster that the forest can regenerate itself, and consideration of the local wildlife is taken into account, as well as the well-being of the forest workers. 62

TAKT uses different types of wood, carefully adapted to the expression, use and construction of the furniture. The tree species are all local in the sense that they are common across Denmark, the Nordic countries and Europe. This means that we do not need to use unnecessary energy on the transport of wood from other parts of the world.

Oak Oak is used in many of our produtcs because it’s strong, durable and long-lasting. Oak is also used for floors, fence posts, bottom nets, tools, barrels, chests, veneers. Historically, it has also been used to construct houses, frames of ships, wagons, bridges and shingles. Due to the properties of the wood and its high content of tannins, it has also been used in tanning hides and for aging wine.

Ash

Beech is used in Tool Chair where its uniform expression and reliable strength can be best utilised. Beech is sturdy and durable yet relatively flexible. Historically, beech was implemented for writing purposes and beech tablets were the medium of choice in the Northern European countries before paper was invented. The beech tree is still a common tree in Denmark and it is widely employed for objects such as furniture, toys, clogs, veneer, plywood and parquet floors.

Ash is used in our Soft Series because of its strong mechanical properties and modest nature. Ash is heavy, hard and tough, and these properties are utilised in sports accessories, handles for tools and as wood for ladders. In ancient times it was used for carts, spears and bows. In recent history, ash was used to construct the skeleton of the first airplanes and cars due to its combination of lightness, strength and resilience.

A special process involving sanding, buffing and applying a special type of leather oil to the surface gives it that almost velvety touch. At the same time, Our exclusive Dunes leather from Sørensen Leather boasts a matt look that’s raw with a touch of understated elegance.

Our Dunes leather collection has received the Nordic Swan Ecolabel. A highly-respected certification verifying that it meets their rigorous requirements regarding the environment, use of energy and resources. The Dunes collection is also certified to be part of EU Eco-label furniture.

Oil protects and strengthens the surfaces on light types of wood such as oak, ash, beech, birch and pine. The oil will minimize the natural darkening of the wood and keep it well-nourished and resistant to water, dirt and grease.

Our furniture surfaces are treated with natural oils or water based lacquer. Oil treatment allows the wood to develop a characterful patina over time, and will also enable you to easily repair damage to the surface by applying light sandpaper and a new oil treatment – again and again. 67

Our furniture can be customised with a variety of Kvadrat wool fabrics to naturally blend in with your personal interior. All fabrics are of course ecolabelled and our leathers have received the Nordic Swan Ecolabel. To us, sustainability is also about ensuring longevity our designs. We want to avoid fast color trends that will only shorten the relevant lifetime of your furniture. When we select colors for our furniture and particularly the fabrics, we therefore curate colors that have a inherent durability – colors that are inspired by nature ...

Colors inspired by nature As the light summer nights fade into crisp autumn days, our relationship to nature and to ourselves transform in beautiful gradients. 70

In fall, nature exhales. It is a preparation for the coming months and the changes occuring during these times are evident in a prevailing atmosphere across both nature and society. We humans instinctively turn our attention inwards on the cusp of autumn: cultivating ourselves, our loved ones and our home heading into the winter months. And when the first blades of grass emerge from a frozen Earth in spring, we likewise debut what’s been lying dormant under the surface. The re-emergence of our inner selves shines more and more to the people around us. Everything comes to life and our mood changes accordingly. Over and over, these organic rhythms cue us just as they cue nature’s evolution. Day becomes night and night becomes day; inner reflections become outward actions. Maybe nature and human nature are more intimately connected than we realise.

Colors inspired by the changing seasons

Our shades of blue encompass the sky and the seascapes that dominate Nordic horizons. Ranging from a hazy grey to a deep midnight blue, these colours exude tranquility and call for reflection. The dark blues and the sea’s ebbing and flowing reminds us of the larger cycles at play in nature. Lighter sky blues invokes a meditation on the constants in our lives in the face of changing tides. The Beautiful Decay Inspired by the progression from green leaves

to amber forest-floors, our shades of red evoke visions of vibrant decay and ambiance of transformation. From a soft rose hue to a golden ochre, the variation displays the changing of the seasons. After a robust performance in full bloom, now’s the time to recuperate. Their warm shades encompass this evolution as something to be celebrated, not mourned.

we maintain that these concepts are central to the development of a strong heritage. From the human hand to the industrial hand There is a renewed interest in craft taking place. This slow means of production is in contrast to the globalized, high-speed markets of seasonal collections and mass-produced products, often devoid of human touch. Offering authenticity and provenance, craft gives us the feeling that someone has done a great deal of effort to make something good. How can we reconcile the nature of craft with the speed of our world today? Modern industrial product To make good industrial products, we believe it is a prerequisite that the craft is present at all levels. Modern industrial production methods offer an abundance of opportunities for stable and efficient production, but craft and quality can be hard to recognise in this context. Yet, 92

Craftsmanship must be translated from the human hand to the industrial hand without losing its core qualities. It requires production with care, professional competency, and respect for the material. Good craftsmanship today continues to have a strong foundation in the craftsperson’s years of experience and a deep understanding of a material’s properties, possibilities and limitations. It is about the specific cohesion that arises when a tool becomes a natural extension of the hand. Industrial production is to be seen as a natural extension of the craftsperson’s traditional tools, and “modern craftsmanship” comes about when industrial tools are carefully em-

ployed to take over costly manual processes without losing the sensitivity for the materials. It requires considerable knowledge and insight at all levels: the dialogue, the connection from the design process, the prototype development and the production stages are all of great importance. We see the skilled craftsperson as the link between designer, product and industrial production process. We believe that insight into and experience with craft is vital for making good industrial products. We experience the world through our senses, and in this dialogue, there is an exchange between our personal perception and a world of impressions and tactile experiences. When we introduce new design products to the world, the key to the experience of quality is the translation of craft to modern production methods and the harmony that maintains recognition and presence. 93

Moving towards zero-waste furniture production

TAKT

Production

An important issue for TAKT is to reduce waste in the production phase. In line with our belief to live sustainably, we see zero waste as an integral and important part. We work to reduce waste of timber material all the way from the forest to the workshop. It starts by only using FSC® certified wood from sustainable forests in our production. The FSC® certification ensures comprehensive care for nature, animals and people in forests, and the certification is a guarantee that no more trees are felled than the forest is capable of regenerating itself. After the tree is felled, the timber is dried for several months and cut at the sawmill in precise lengths that fit with each piece of furniture, thereby minimizing the amount of leftover material later in the workshop. All our furniture is crafted at selected European workshops in Denmark and Latvia. Leftovers from production – sawdust, woodchips and cut-off wood – are recycled into either chip boards or for local heating. Timber for TAKT furniture receives no chemical treatments so burning the leftover wood does not create toxic fumes. If any material is left at this point, it is donated to companies for reusing purposes. This way all leftover material is given a new purpose, and zero goes to waste. 97

We price things fairly, so you don’t pay more than needed for good quality, but also so you pay enough to fairly support our workers, source our materials in sustainable ways, and build a business that is able to sustain itself. That’s why we believe in transparency from production, to transport to pricing. We continue the tradition of design for everyone by being fair and up-front with our prices. We don’t service an expensive network of physical retail stores, we don’t hold multiple distribution warehouses. Instead, we work directly with the best furniture workshops. When we receive your order, we dispatch the product from our central warehouse in Denmark and ship it to you directly. That is how we can put more value into the product, sell it to you at a fair price and keep you informed along the way. We believe you have a right to know how much your furniture costs to make. We reveal the true costs behind all of our products — from materials, to labor to transportation. And then we offer them to you, minus the traditional retail markup. 100
