Sony Walkman Turns 40 (OK... 41!) Let's face it: today's younger generation are absolutely sport when it comes to portable devices. They have tablets, mobile phones, smart watches, thousands of TV channels to choose from, laptop computers and a whole lot more. What we needed a powerful laptop computer for with thousands of pounds.dollars.euros of software on it, just 15-years ago, is now available on some of the simplest mobile phones. That all changed with the compact cassette, which was developed in 1963 by the Dutch electronics firm Philips. In the late 1960s, the introduction of prerecorded compact cassettes made it possible to listen to music on portable devices as well as on car stereos, though gramophone records remained the most popular format for home listening. But many of us will remember being able to record the chart shows on Radio 1 and 208 and playing them back on a cassette player, the size of a small shoebox. Sony cofounder Masaru Ibuka used Sony's bulky TC-D5 cassette recorder to listen to music while traveling for business. He asked executive deputy president Norio Ohga to design a playback-only stereo version optimised for headphone use. The first prototype was built from a modified Sony Pressman,a compact cassette recorder designed for journalists and released in 1977. 4

That led to the metalcased blue-and-silver Walkman TPS-L2, the world's first low-cost personal stereo. This revolutionised the future of portable audioplayers and went on sale in Japan on July 1, 1979. It was sold for around ÂĽ33,000 (or $150.00). Though Sony predicted it would sell about 5,000 units a month, it sold more than 30,000 in the first two months. The Walkman was followed by a series of international releases; as overseas sales companies objected to the wasei-eigo name, it was sold under several names, including Soundabout in the United States, Freestyle in Australia and Sweden, and Stowaway in the UK. Eventually, in the early 1980s, Walkman caught on globally and Sony used the name worldwide. The TPS-L2 was introduced in the U.S. in June 1980.By 1999 Sony sold 186 million cassette Walkmans. 5

The Playlist Having the ability to customize a playlist was a new and exciting revolution in music technology. Potential buyers had the opportunity to choose their perfect match in terms of mobile listening technology. The ability to play your own music and listen privately was a huge selling point of the Walkman, especially amongst teens, who greatly contributed to its success. Despite "all this technological diversity, there must be one which is the perfect choice for you". This method of marketing to an extremely expansive userbase while maintaining the idea that the product was made for each individual "[got] the best of all possible worlds—mass marketing and personal differentiation." Happy 40th Birthday to the Sony Walkman.

Business Opportunity

Over the last 18-months we have worked with a number of communities, business people and entrepreneurs who wanted their own magazine to promote their cause, charity, association, community, high street or purely to sell adverts and obtain a new business stream. Every month we produce a new digital magazine and each special edition provides you with your own pages to promote yourself or your cause. Take Five is an A5 size publication and some people have combined a print edition with the eMagazine. It's very popular with Charities and Associations who can sell advertising pages to their sponsors and businesses and in turn forward 'their' Take Five eMagazine to each and everyone of their followers and supporters. The Charity promotes those who kindly support them and they in turn benefit from revenue raised from advertising. It's a win win situation for very little cost. If you would be interested in licensing your own Take Five eMagazine, please contact us for a zeroobligation chat... Stay Safe everyone.. The Month In Music: August Two years later, on 3 August 1971, Paul McCartney announced he was forming Wings with wife Linda.

G August was a busy month of the year for The Beatles: in 1962 they said goodbye to Pete Best and hello to Ringo Starr; in 1964 their first movie, Hard Day’s Night, hit the cinema; and they shot the iconic Abbey Road road crossing cover in 1969.

Noel Gallagher quit Oasis on 28 August 2009 – 10 years earlier, bassist Paul McGuigan and guitarist Bonehead also quit in August. Nirvana shot the video for Smells Like Teen Spirit on 17 August 1991. On 1 August 1987 MTV Europe began – its first song was Dire Straits’ Money For Nothing with the apt line, ‘I want my MTV’… sung by Sting.

Robert Allen Zimmerman legally became Bob Dylan on 2 August 1962, having signed a music publishing deal a month earlier.

Amazing August No1s In August 1999, Geri Halliwell had her first post-Spice Girls solo no.1 with Mi Chica Latino and Ronan Keating had his first post-Boyzone no.1 with When You Say Nothing At All from Notting Hill.

In 1994 Boyz II Men shot to no.1 in the US with I’ll Make Love To You and knocked themselves off the top of the album chart with On Bended Knee. Guns ‘n’ Roses hit no.1 with debut album Appetite For Destruction in 1988 – it had already spent 57 weeks in the 17

This year, 2020, we have two anniversaries in one: the real Apollo 13's failed mission from 1970 and the marvellous Ron Howard film about the mission, from 25-years ago.

Based on the true story of the ill-fated 13th Apollo mission bound for the moon. Astronauts Lovell, Haise and

22

Swigert were scheduled to fly Apollo 14, but are moved up to 13. Apollo 13 was directed by Ron Howard and starred Tom Hanks, Kevin Bacon, Bill Paxton, Ed Harris, and Gary Sinise. The film depicts astronauts Lovell, Jack Swigert, and Fred Haise aboard Apollo 13 for America's third Moon landing mission. En route, an on-board explosion deprives their spacecraft of most of its oxygen supply and electric power, forcing NASA's flight controllers to abort the Moon landing, and turning the mission into a struggle to get the three men home safely. It was all very routine until that "Houston we've got a problem" moment and so we take a look at some of the Trivia and differences between fact and fiction of the Apollo 13 mission. The real Jim Lovell appears as a captain at the end of the movie. The filmmakers originally thought it would be nice to make his character an admiral but Lovell insisted he be a captain as that was his final rank 23

before retirement. In fact, Lovell was wearing his old uniform for the scene. Lovell's actual observation was, "Houston, we've had a problem."

It is hard to tell the difference between the two phrases in the recording and Ron Howard states it was deliberately changed to present-tense "have"

24

because the original quote of "had" implied that the problem was over. In some scenes where the Earth can be seen from the windows of Apollo 13, it is one of the photos taken by Jim Lovell and Bill Anders on the Apollo 8 mission. Bill Paxton, Tom Hanks and Kevin Bacon were all very proud of the fact that they weren't sick on the so-called Vomit Comet - the plane used to simulate zero gravity. The cameramen weren't so lucky. When Tom Hanks joined the cast, Jim Lovell sent him a telegram that read, "Welcome aboard Apollo 13." The spacesuits cost 30,000 dollars each. The movie's line "Houston, we have a problem." was voted as the #50 movie quote by the American Film Institute (out of 100).

Real Women: Marilyn Monroe Marilyn Monroe (born Norma Jeane Mortenson; June 1, 1926 – August 4, 1962) was an American actress, model, and singer. Famous for playing comedic "blonde bombshell" characters, she became one of the most popular sex symbols of the 1950s and early 1960s and was emblematic of the era's changing attitudes towards sexuality. She was a top-billed actress for only a decade, but her films grossed $200 million (equivalent to $2 billion in 2019) by the time of her death in 1962. More than half a century later, she continues to be a major popular culture icon. Take Five brings you some Marilyn Monroe Trivia: Voted 'Sexiest Woman of the Century' by People Magazine. [1999] Was 1947's Miss California Artichoke Queen. Was roommates with Shelley Winters when they were both starting out in Hollywood. She was Playboy's first "Sweetheart of the Month" in December 1953. 32

The licensing of Marilyn's name and likeness, handled worldwide by Curtis Management Group, reportedly nets the Monroe estate about $2 million a year. Was named the Number One Sex Star of the 20th Century by Playboy magazine in 1999. Started using the name Marilyn Monroe in 1946, but did not legally change it until 1956.

33

Given a dog she named Tippy by foster father Albert Bolender. In her final, unfinished film Something's Got to Give (1962), the dog was also named Tippy. When she was told that she was not the star in Gentlemen Prefer Blondes (1953) she verbally said "Well whatever I am, I'm still the blonde.". Hundreds of items of memorabilia auctioned off in late October 1999 by Christie's, with her infamous 'JFK' birthday-gown fetching over $1 million. When putting her imprints at Grumman's she joked that Jane Russell was best known for her large front-side and she was known for her wiggly walk, so Jane could lean over, and she could sit in it. It was only a joke, but she dotted the "I" in her name with a rhinestone, which was stolen within days.

34

Her first modelling job paid only five dollars. Frequently used Nivea moisturiser. During the filming of Niagara (1953), she was still under contract as a stock actor, thus, she received less salary than her make-up man. This was also the only film in which her character died. The film was reworked to highlight her after Anne Bancroft withdrew. Often carried around the book, "The Biography of Abraham Lincoln." 35

How to Feel Motivated When You Aren't By Robert Landau

See if you can relate to the following; It's first thing in the morning. After a long and restful sleep, you all of a sudden hear the sound of something invading the amazing peace you found throughout the night. It's your alarm clock! It happens to be ringing so loud you just want to pick it up and throw it across the bedroom. The day has finally arrived. The big meeting is happening in just two hours and you realise that you have so much 76

to do to get yourself ready for what could indeed be a life-changing event. You've been preparing for this for weeks and it's finally here. How do you feel about the upcoming event that is now just hours away? While it all looks good on paper, if you have to be honest with yourself...the emotions you are feeling connected with the event are an entirely different story. As you survey your thoughts about today, a door seems to energetically slam shut in your face. You realise that you just aren't motivated or even the least bit excited about the day that is in the process of getting started. Motivation is the key word here and you don't have any, not even an ounce. "I just don't feel like it!," you say over and over to yourself. "If I'm going to get this done and get through it, I'm going to have to find some energy somewhere and at least pretend that I care. This isn't good, it just isn't good!" 77

You wish you could just stay in bed for the entire day promising yourself that someday, hopefully sooner than later, you’ll be able to stay in bed as long as you want to because retirement and a true life of leisure is looking pretty good right now. Does this sound familiar? So many times we'll reach a place in life where we just aren't motivated to take the next steps that appear before us. The question then becomes; how do we move forward in a positive way if we don't really feel like it? The answers are easier than you think. I believe we are naturally motivated beings. That’s who we were when we got here and we don’t lose touch of that special spark as we move along the journey that is our life. It is only when we forget the essence of our true being that the storm clouds set in. Here are some helpful ways to help you reconnect with your true motivational energy and essence…

78

#1 - You're only human It’s unnatural to feel totally psyched about everything all the time. If we did it just might be that we aren't being totally honest and in touch with ourselves. To not feel totally into everything you're supposed to be into is OK. That's life. #2 - Be kind to yourself in the midst of feeling negative Give yourself a break and understand that experiencing the lows in life are equally important as feeling life’s highs. It is often said that to experience happiness we also must experience unhappiness from time to time otherwise how could we truly know what real happiness is? We live in a world of duality so as long as we strive to create a healthy balance between the two, all is good. Learning by way of negativity and pain is a part of the journey. #3 - Do you believe that you can be motivated concerning the issue at hand? Life is about learning how to convert negatives into positives. The only way that will happen is if you choose to do what it takes to get there. If you don't want such a shift to occur or if you happen to have a deep-seated belief that it's just not possible...then it's just not possible. 79

You are the sum total of your thoughts. What you choose to believe becomes the foundation on which your tomorrow is built. The question becomes, are you in control of your thoughts or do you allow your thoughts to control you? #4 - Just do it! Figure out what it will take for you to feel motivated once again. Consider the possibility that it might not be as difficult as you think. What are three things you can do right now to get yourself back in line with feeling up to the task at hand? There usually are at least three. You might have to dig deep to find them but they are there just waiting for you to discover them. 80

All too often we tend to forget how truly powerful we are. If we take the time to refocus, reframe and restart, the answers are waiting for us to discover. The joke’s on us because they’ve been there all along. Focus on the positives you've found, feel what they feel like within you. That alone can create the shift you need to light the flame of motivation. #5 - You've got the power You have been gifted with the power to move forward. You are a winner, even when you’re feeling anything but. Are you a victim to your life's highs and lows or are you a co-creator and willing participant in your life? The "True You" knows the answer to that question. You are an amazing person and you came here to prove to yourself that you are just that. When you happen to forget how amazing you truly are, realise that remembering is just around the corner. Clouds are always temporary and can only obscure the light of a crystal clear day for so long. 81

Feeling motivated or the lack thereof is a choice. The same energy it takes to feel a lack of motivation is the same energy it takes to feel totally motivated. You are in control. Be your own best friend. Make the choices in life that serve you in a positive and productive way, even if your mind-chatter of an ego tries to convince you otherwise. Official Top Ten Chart 25th July, 1976 1: DON'T GO BREAKING MY HEART ELTON JOHN AND KIKI DEE Kiki Dee explained in the book 1000 UK #1 Hits by Jon Kutner & Spencer Leigh, "Both Elton and I were big fans of those duets on Motown by the likes of Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell and as there hadn't been any around for a bit, we thought we'd do one ourselves." Elton recorded his part in Toronto, then the tape was sent to London where Kiki Dee recorded her vocal. Producer Gus Dudgeon recalls, "I was with Elton in Canada and he actually sang about three quarters of the song and gave Kiki about four lines. I said, "Hang on a minute, is this supposed to be a duet or a guest appearance? Elton replied, 'A duet.' Then you've got to give her at least 50% of the song." After Elton recorded his part in Toronto, the tapes were sent to London and when Kiki got them she remembered, "Elton had recorded the song abroad and also did my vocals in a high-pitched voice which was quite funny, so I knew which lines to sing." This was Elton's first #1 in the UK. He had to wait 14 years for his next UK #1, which was "Sacrifice." This was the second-biggest-selling record of 1976 in both the UK and US (In the UK, "Save Your Kisses for Me" was #1; in the US it was "Silly Love Songs" by Wings. 86

It was the only number one hit in the UK Singles Chart for Demis Roussos, spending a single week at the top of the charts in July 1976, and the sole EP to reach the top of the charts that decade. The EP's track listing included "Forever and Ever", which was later spoofed by Kenny Everett on his television show. It was recorded and released as a single by Engelbert Humperdinck in 1975.

87

4: KISS AND SAY GOODBYE THE MANHATTANS The Manhattans biggest hit, reaching the top of the charts in the US and staying there for two weeks. UB40 covered this in 2005 scoring a #19 UK hit with their version.

7: MISTY BLUE DOROTHY MOORE

The song reached a bigger audience after it was covered by Ella Fitzgerald the following year. Joe Simon recorded the original R&B version in 1972.

8: JEANS ON DAVID DUNDAS English musician and actor Lord David Dundas must be one of the classiest people ever to become a hitmaker. He is the son of the 3rd Marquess of Zetland. This song was written by David Dundas with help from Roger Greenaway. The song was originally a jingle for Brutus Jeans. The popularity of the commercial eventually resulted in the song's release as a single. This had happened to Greenaway before - "I'd Like To Teach The World To Sing" originally soundtracked a Coca-Cola commercial. 89

Elvis has left the building: August 1977 by Keith Nicol It's one of those moments in time that many of us of a certain age will always remember the time and place when they first heard the news. I was was waiting for a friend in Sunderland, Ontario, before driving to Ontario Place to watch Sha Na Na perform their Rock'n'Roll tribute show, Suddenly the news came over the radio that Elvis had died but that details had yet to be confirmed. With that sense of disbelief and that maybe it was all a hoax, we watched the show, and not until the Second Act did Sha Na Na announce that Elvis had passed earlier, bringing a huge intake of breath from the audience, many of home who had been travelling and not heard the news, back in the days before the internet, when if you'd not seen a TV, heard it on the radio or been told by someone, you'd be none the wiser until the next day. Torrevieja Translators are happy to announce that we are now official affiliates of DGT (Tráfico) and can now process a lot more Driving Licence Exchanges quicker than before. As the demand has been huge, we are no longer accepting “Attending With” appointments but will complete these for the few clients that have requested this service and paid their deposit. We are in the process of contacting all clients who either have dates from us later in this month (11th Feb onwards) or the start of next month, to move everyone that wants it, forward to next week, or the following week. plus clients who have completed medicals but are awaiting a date for their licence exchange. As many of our clients are spread over this part of Spain, we are going to offer four drop off and pick up points in different areas to help make it easier and more convenient. These are located in Quesada (Rojales), San Miguel, Torrevieja and Zenia Boulevard. We will contact all customers with details shortly on the dates and times (all will be in the early evening and weekly, so don’t worry if you can’t do it next week, there are plenty more dates to do it before 29th March) but you must first have your Driver's Medical completed before we can do the final stage of the exchange. TOYAH’S BLOG: JULY 2020

HELLO THERE! I hope you are all well and safe. HAPPY SEMI-OUT OF LOCKDOWN WEEKEND. This month I have managed to do Voiceovers in a studio in Bristol, in complete isolation, all run via Zoom and operate remote cameras for Ch5 from our kitchen via Zoom too. I feel I have the potential to be a technical wiz. I recorded a main vocal for a new stage musical from my office desk and am well on the way to having enough material for the next Toyah album. Two days ago I was in London for the first time since 12 March, having filled my car with unleaded for the first time in three months. The car was still working! It was a bizarre feeling, one of “should I be here, is this necessary?” nestled next to the 112

overwhelming emotion of “YEHHHHHHHHHHHH I AM OUT OF THE HOUSE! AT LAST!” It completely lifted my mood to have this sense of normality, even though I was venturing onto a very different and unexpected world. On Friday (3 July) just gone, there was the release of the entire works of TOYAH & THE HUMANS, the beautiful box set NOISE IN YOUR HEAD and four stunning vinyls, including LIVE AT THE SCALA with Robert Fripp guesting with us. It is the most beautiful package. I am immensely proud of it. I am proud of the sound, the attitude, the journey and above all the memories. This project took me from Estonia to Seattle to New York and London, one of the best times in my life. This has made me reminisce about Bill Rieflin big time and all the adventures we had around the world. One of the loveliest nights of my life was Valentine’s Day 2014. I cannot remember why Robert wasn’t with us, he was most likely en route from the USA, but Bill, Tony Levin, myself and Pat Mastelotto ended up in a tiny but gorgeous Japanese restaurant in Dunstable, on a deserted pedestrian High Street. It was pouring rain and like a surreal film set! There were only four or five tables and we were the only people there. It was so romantic to be out with three great men! All had such an extensive knowledge of Japanese food that they were talking to the proprietor in Japanese and ordering ‘offmenu’. I was training for a 5 metre high dive in nearby Luton the next 113

day. Luton is one of the rare swimming pools in the UK that has Olympic high diving boards. I was going to dive live on ITV’s Splash on the Saturday and the boys were rehearsing the rhythm section before a King Crimson tour at Gavin Harrison’s place. So we thought we would stick together on this particular night when it’s not fun to be alone. As usual Bill and Pat ate their food and my food off my plate, to my amusement, then we all walked back to the Premier Inn and downed a bottle of Port in Bill’s room. This might not sound super exciting but I’ve spent so many what should be special days apart from my hubby because of his touring schedule that this particular evening was magical…. VALENTINES IN DUNSTABLE! The next morning I joined them all for breakfast before going off training, it was one of those buffet events and I left my phone on the table in case the Splash team needed to talk to me. Unbeknown to me Bill randomly went through my phone book and chose a name that interested him and sent this text “ OMG so sore from rampant sex in a Premier Inn off the M1, I am exhausted love Toyah”. When I got back to the table he was smiling his demonic smile when a text came in from the Features Editor of The Daily Mail “So pleased you’re having a good time, I wish I was!” when I scrolled to the 114

message before I couldn’t believe my eyes. Bill and Pat were rolling on the floor by this time. I sent my apologies to the journalist and explained what had happened and prayed she believed me. These kind of things were regular with Bill, it was like the other time he told the “take out” counters at restaurants around Seattle my name was Daisy and I spent a couple of days wondering why people all over the city kept shouting “Daisy you’ve forgotten Bill’s potato salad!” at me……..I was constantly on the receiving end of his wicked humour. As many of you know Robert and I love doing our Sunday Lunch films, last week we recorded Dance In The Hurricane, coincidentally having just watched Will Farrell’s brilliant film EUROVISION, where his 115

costumes where rather worryingly similar to some clothes I have worn in the past! Last Sunday I was going to wear a rather spectacular silver dress for this “at home” shoot and I got scared I might look like a Eurovision entrant in the eyes of someone 6000 miles away. Then I thought “heck! Why not?’ I might as well wear a rather gaudy pair of silver horns I had made for a stage show 12 years ago and really enter into the Eurovision spirit anyway but I got cold feet because Americans are not famed for understanding English irony. One of my favourite parts in the film is Will Ferrell on the hamster wheel….. dare I say first done by French and Saunders in ‘88 with me guest starring, singing Because The Night. (You can see this on BBC iPlayer right now, starts at 13m 20sec) both French and Saunders were dressed as farmers on a huge hamster wheel interrupting my performance, great ideas never go away, they just re-surface. Many times I am asked whom would I love around my dinner table as the perfect guest combination and it would have to be Will Ferrell, Anthony Bourdain, Janis Joplin, Bowie, Samuel L. Jackson, Maya Angelou, Joe Strummer, Germaine Greer and Jimi Hendrix. That conversation would be thrilling. In the last month I have taken up, rather unexpectedly…..BOXING. Having to get “world” ready after lockdown I started intense training for muscle strength four weeks ago, within a week of starting I was deadlifting 60 kilo, I weigh 54 kilo! 116

I never thought I would ever be able to do that again in my lifetime and to be honest it isn’t something I want to do too often but under supervision I am happy to do it to prove something to myself …….if I ever have to carry a small adult, I CAN! Now my next task is to get Robert moving. I fear lockdown has knocked his confidence in his body and the outside world…. so over the next few weeks we will venture outside into this Brave New World. Our veg patches are producing wonderful courgettes, tomatoes, chard, beans….even peaches in the hot house and I am teaching Robert how to harvest and cook them, which he loves. In the meantime keep sending in your questions for Saturday’s Toyah At Home, I adore responding and the music will keep coming lockdown or not. BE PROUD, BE LOUD, BE HEARD
