Welcome to Take Five, the magazine that can go with you, anytime and everywhere. And while it may sound like an advertisement for Martini, welcome to the 21st Century and what is slowly becoming the future of publishing: the electronic magazine, or emag. With printing costs going up and up, and a typical magazine costing a fiver or more, and even a pound or two for a weekly or Sunday newspaper, it's difficult to argue that a free eMagaizne is not the very best in value for money.

It's FREE... Zilch... Nada... Zero pounds, euros, pence, cents, dollars or shekels. It's not quite a free lunch, but you can read it over your morning cuppa, while having a relaxing cafe con leche at your favourite sidewalk cafe, on the bus, train, commuting: you name it... if you have your phone or tablet with you, you can read it wherever you go. It's easy...

Newspapers still have their place. The tactile feel of turning pages and reading a newspaper or magazine can still be a joy. And if you wish to print this out or have it printed, that's also possible. But let's face reality, there is probably little need to ever buy a printed, physical magazine ever again when you consider that Take Five is FREE and you can view thousands of your favourite magazines on line, for free or on subscription. Having digital magazines instead of paper publications is a great way of saving space, cutting down on recycling and ultimately – hopefully – reducing the destruction of forests for paper production.

Yes... it's true... No Trees were hurt in the publication of this magazine, although many a cup of coffee was consumed. But best of all, you now have a magazine at your fingertips, to flip from page to page with just a swipe of your fingers, or with voice control, in full colour, with built in links to websites, email addresses, music, video and so much more... If you’re not already reading magazines on your IOS or Android phone or tablet, you should start as soon as possible, and maybe this is the day to start. with Take Five. You never know when you'll have five minutes to rest or relax, so always take us along for the ride...

Out and About: Costa Blanca South

by Keith Nicol It's April already and for a change, Easter is later than usual, with Easter Sunday falling on the 21st, the Cadbury cream eggs are all waiting eaten and Spring is in the air. Last month thousands of people headed to Cabo Roig to enjoy probably the largest St. Patrick's Day Parade on mainland Europe, and keeping the Irish theme going, the second Irish Pub Route, a sort of Irish Tapas route, or better still, a Pub and Grub Crawl takes place over the Easter weekend throughout the Orihuela Costa region. The second Irish Pub Route features 31 participating Irish pubs with the Orihuela town Hall providing a couple of coaches to help you visit each and everyone of the pubs, for this “Irish Pub Crawl”, so everybody can travel around the route safely. Each bar will offer a drink and a 'tapa' (finger food) for 2.50€. In addition they have many special offers and entertainment. Funloving participants will be able to vote by a special 'app' or at ballot boxes for the “the best drink & tapa”, “the best pub atmosphere” and “the best decorated pub”. Join

the 'crawl' for the “Craic” on the 20th and 21st of April.

Easter Week or Semana Santa has been declared an event of Tourist Interest by the Government of Valencia, Torrevieja's Easter Week began in 1981, although it dates back to the 19th Century. With a total of 14 brotherhoods, this Easter Week has its own idiosyncrasy, with an important artistic heritage made up of thrones, imagery, embroidery, jewellery work, etc. This is an Easter Week that has managed to combine the town’s cosmopolitan aspect with brotherhoods and bearers of religious images of different nationalities, making this religious celebration a truly unique religious event.

Although there are processions and events every day over the Easter period, the two main processions take place on the Monday evening, at 10.00am, before Easter, and on Good Friday, at 8.00pm. Many local towns have their own events too. If you are seeking a little easy diversion in Torrevieja, why not visit the Museo del Mar y de la Sal, the Eras de la Sal, the Casino and for a payment of 2â‚Ź, an opportunity to visit Spain's only decommissioned Submarine, which is open to the public, the S-61 Delfin and the Albatros, a former Customs Patrol Boat.

Torrevieja's newest tourist attraction is the opportunity to visit the salt works. Discover the salt produced in the Natural Park of the Lagoons of La Mata and Torrevieja on this singular scene: The amazing Pink Lake. This protected area has a total surface

of 3.700 hectares of which 2.100 hectares are water, 1.400 hectares in the lagoon of Torrevieja and 700 Ha. of La Mata. The salt lake of Torrevieja is the number one salt producer in Europe and the only one that uses floating machines for the salt extraction. During this visit, which takes place on the little train from in front of the Waterfall beside the Casino. you can admire the salt mountains called “GARBERAS which can rise up to 20 m high, like a seven floor building. You will also discover some amazing details like the numerous uses of salt or why the water on the lake has pink colour. This is due to some pigments of some algaes and bacterias living in extreme conditions of salinity that are also eaten by the microscopic shrimp called Artemia Salina. The more concentrated salt, the bigger number of bacterias and the more intense pink colour on the lake.

It is important to remember that it is a protected area and bathing on the lake is not allowed EXCEPT in a new designated area. The tour take approximately one hour and starts from Paseo de la Libertad, opposite Waldo Calero sq. - (fountain square) The tours leave at: 10:00, 12:00, 14:00, 16:00, 18:00h. Prices: Adults: 7,95 €, Children( 2 to 12 years old): 6,95 €, Retired (over 65): 6,95 €

April 10th, 1970: Paul McCartney quits The Beatles

To loosely paraphrase Sargent Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band: It was 49 years ago this months, that The Beatles split up. The biggest band in the history of rock and pop music was split apart on this day in 1970 by Paul McCartney, though a Press Release he sent to specific members of the Press. While the band had been on tender-hooks for a number of years, a confrontation at Paul's house between him and Ringo Star about proposed solo album launch dates, ended with the Ringo being thrown out of Paul's house, and things went from

bad to worse from that moment onwards. Paul's Press Release touched on the fact that the band would no longer be working together, but he didn't state unequivocally that The Beatles were about the split .

Rarely would the band work together in the studio, with each one focusing on their own compositions and having a little fun by using their bandmates as ‘sidemen’, rather than producing music as The Beatles. Both George Harrison and Ringo Starr had walked out during sessions for The White Album, only to be coaxed back. In 1969, John Lennon had told the others that he was no longer a part of the band. Shockwaves went through the media and music industry leading to newspaper headlines such as the Daily Mirror’s 'Paul Quits The Beatles', and this moment in time drove a wedge between him, Ringo, George and John. However, the truth of the matter was that The Beatles had been growing apart for nearly three years after the death of their manager Brian Epstein in 1967.

Lennon was persuaded to keep his decision quiet while a new contract was negotiated with Capitol Records in the US that year, and beyond as plans were made to salvage the Let It Be album, recorded more than a year before, in April 1970. His three bandmates then demanded that McCartney delay the release of his solo album in order to avoid a sales clash. Still smarting from a decision taken without his knowledge to allow producer Phil Spector to significantly alter his songs on Let It Be, he refused.

Allen Klein became the Beatles’ business manager, However, after the High Court suit in late 1970 Klein ceased to have any control over the band’s affairs.

It was now a fast downhill spiral towards the final break up of the band. Before the end of the year, McCartney filed a High Court suit to dissolve their business partnership, bringing to an end the story of the ‘four lads who shook the world’. Without Brian Epstein to provide direction and management, The Beatles had lost their way, They had quit touring, produced the illfated Magical Mystery Tour film and made more headlines with their aborted sojourn to India with the Maharishi Mahesh Yogi. Lennon had fallen in love with Yoko Ono, whom he insisted on bringing into the studio with him – the first time that anyone outside of the group and producer George Martin had been allowed this privilege – much to the annoyance of the other three. Against Paul's wishes, American

In his Press Release, selfinterview, McCartney cited “personal differences, business differences, musical differences” for his “break” from the Beatles, but concluded by saying of the break. “Temporary or permanent? I don’t really know.”

While never in a studio at the same time again, all four Beatles played on Starr’s 1973 album I’m the Greatest. After Lennon’s death the three surviving Beatles added music and vocals to two of his songs, Free as a Bird and Real Love, for their Anthology TV series. The Beatles had 17 official number one singles in the UK charts, a total only posthumously surpassed by Elvis Presley in 2002.

Depeche Mode's Martin Gore to release instrumental album One of England's most treasured songwriters, vocalists all round musical aficionados has announced a brand new album waiting in the wings, set to arrive 27th April. Martin Gore is best-known as part of the decade-spanning synth-rock outfit Depeche Mode, alongside Andy Fletcher and Dave Gahan. Having sold over 100million records across the world, it's safe to say he knows exactly how to make sounds that truly resonate with the public, and from what we've heard of his latest offering this reputation shows no signs of being ruined when the release date arrives. MG will be unveiled via the legendary British imprint, Mute (home to Depeche Mode, amongst many other outstanding outfits), with the title clearly a reference to this being something of a personal experiment for Gore. Entirely instrumental, and born largely of dance and electronica influences, the producer began work in the immediate aftermath of his band's 2013 Delta Machine tour, after returning to his Santa Barbara home. So far our ears have been enchanted by the first track to be made public- Europa Hymn - and its futurist atmospheres, although we're unsurprised at how accomplished this is.

Gore has been responsible for the Mode's innumerable melodies, harmonies and non-vocal sections since 1981, and that pedigree has stood him in very good stead for this fresh endeavour. Fitting in that it arrives in the same month that Blade Runner returns to British cinemas, for all intents and purposes the tune is a bonafide science fiction soundtrack. And an incredibly effective, not to mention evocative one at that. Clearly he agrees with our take on things, too. "I wanted to keep the music very electronic, very filmic and give it an almost sci-fi like quality," Gore explains. "Music is a necessity for me. I go into the studio at least five days a week, every week, so once I had the idea and the template, the process was quick and fun.

"As a songwriter, I am aware of the power of words," Martin admits. "Especially when they are juxtaposed in the right way with chords and melody. I am also aware of the power of pure music and the emotions that can be created by musical atmospheres and that is what I wanted to capture with this project."

A ‘proper’ whiskey for all By Keith Nicol A new Irish Whiskey hit the Off Licence shelves in Ireland at the end of last year and should be reaching Spain anytime soon. It’s called ‘Proper No. Twelve Irish Whiskey’ from Eire Born Spirits. If you’ve not heard of them yet, don’t worry. Not many have. But be assured, you soon will, and you possibly heard about it here first. The man behind the new company, Eire Born Spirits, is a man never short of a few words, none other than Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) Champion and one of the world's most iconic athletes, Conor McGregor. It’s not surprising that he’s the face and spokesman of the new brand as he’s also the founder, chairman and majority owner of the company.

At the launch of Proper No. Twelve Irish Whiskey, McGregor said he was was proud to introduce this exciting Irish whiskey to the world, launching in Ireland and the United States, with further expansion in 2019 and onward. McGregor, being the perfectionist that he is, took a detailed, timeintensive approach to creating his whiskey.

Numerous Irish whiskey makers have sought McGregor's endorsement over the years but, as a true born and bred Irishman, he did not want to simply endorse an Irish whiskey. Inspired by his pride for Ireland and his love of Irish whiskey, McGregor wanted to create his own whiskey, that would match his high standards and make his country proud. For years, McGregor developed the brand under the project name "Notorious" through which came the foundation of what was to eventually become Proper No. Twelve. It became a longer and more complicated project than originally expected, so

McGregor turned to the world's oldest whiskey distillery, located in Ireland, with a proven history of quality whiskey making, where he met David Elder, esteemed master distiller, previously of Guinness, and together they took painstaking measures to bring the whiskey to fruition. "We created close to one hundred blends and ultimately selected what we knew was the one and only proper whiskey blend. We took the time to develop an incredible whiskey and I'm excited to share it with the world," said McGregor. Visit ProperWhiskey.com to learn more and follow @ProperWhiskey.

Priceless Rock'n'Roll comedies We'd like to say that, like rock 'n' roll itself, there are no rules to this list, but that would be lying. In order to whittle down the almost endless choices, every flick here focuses on fictitious bands and made up scenarios, whilst capturing the spirit of guitar wielding heroes and heroines everywhere. Enjoy. American Graffiti ; dir. George Lucas; PG; 1973 Starring: Richard Dreyfuss, Ron Howard, Paul Le Mat One of the most famous youth vs establishment pictures ever, with blue jeans, Cadillacs and slicked-back hair everywhere, a pre- Star Wars Lucas shot to directorial fame with what was, in 1973, a controversial look at a bunch of high school grads out to celebrate their final night in town before heading off to college. Stone cold classic. Rock 'n' Roll High School ; dir. Allan Arkush; PG; 1979 Starring: P.J.Soles, Vincent Van Patten, Clint Howard The brainchild of Roger Corman, Rock 'n' Roll High School should come with a disclaimer- yes it's bad, but that's exactly the point. Kitsch from beginning to end (and that's an understatement), upon release the movie secured instant cult status, in no small part thanks to the fact it involves The Ramones leading the charge against an oppressive administration in the American equivalent to your local comprehensive.

The Blues Brothers ; dir. John Landis; 15; 1980 Starring: John Belushi, Dan Aykroyd, Cab Calloway Realistically this needs no introduction, but to keep up appearances we will happily oblige. With the late, great John Belushi heading up the cast alongside one of the finest living funnymen in the U.S., Aykroyd, we follow the brothers Blues (that's their actual last name, apparently) as they get out of jail and decide to put on a gig to save the Catholic children's home they were originally raised in. This Is Spinal Tap ; dir. Rob Reiner; 15; 1984 Starring: Rob Reiner, Michael McKean, Christopher Guest Reiner struck comedy gold with his parody of the big-haired, big-crotched, smallminded hard rock scene of the 1980s. Amongst the highlights are the song, Big Bottom ; the album cover portraying a woman on all fours smelling a leather glove; and the bit where they lower what's supposed to be a life-size Stonehenge onto stage and realise they got the measurements awfully wrong. Oh yeah, and the amplifiers that go up to eleven... Wayne's World ; dir. Penelope Spheeris; PG; 1992 Starring: Mike Myers, Dana Carvey, Rob Lowe Two guys that need a haircut- one of whom would go on to be Austin Powers, the other thoroughly deserved to make it big but never quite didbroadcast a cable show on public access TV from the former's parents' basement. The crux of which is playing the guitar badly, perving over Claudia Schiffer, and generally taking the piss. Then they get offered a real show on a real station, whilst Wayne's girl gets closer to that elusive record deal.

Real Women: Sophia Loren She grew up in the slums of Pozzuoli during the second World War without any support from her father. Her life took an unexpected turn for the best when, at age 14, she entered into a beauty contest where she placed as one of the finalists. It was there that Sophia caught the attention of film producer Carlo Ponti, some 22 years her senior, whom she eventually married in 1966 once he finally obtained a divorce from his first wife. Under his guidance, Sophia was put under contract and appeared as an extra in ten films beginning in 1950, before working her way up to supporting roles.

Sophia Loren was born as Sofia Scicolone in Rome, Italy, on September 20, 1934. Her father, Riccardo Scicolone, was married to another woman and refused to marry her mother, Romilda Villani, despite the fact that she was the mother of his two children.

By her late teens, Sophia was playing lead roles in many Italian features. In 1957, she embarked on a successful acting career in the United States, starring in Boy on a Dolphin in 1957 and in the same year stared in Arenas de muerte and The Pride and the Passion. She had a short-lived but muchpublicised fling with co-star Cary Grant, who was 31 years her senior. She was only 22 while he was 53, and she rejected a marriage proposal from him. They were paired together a second time in the family-friendly romantic comedy Houseboat (1958). Pink Tights (1960), Escรกndalo en la corte (1960), and The Millionairess (1960) before returning to Italy to star in Two Women (1960). The film was a period piece about a woman living in war-torn Italy who is raped while trying to protect her young daughter. Originally cast as the more glamorous child, Sophia fought against type and was re-cast as the mother, evidencing a lack of vanity and proving herself as a genuine actress. While under contract to Paramount Pictures, Sophia starred in Desire Under the Elms (1958), The Key (1958), The Black Orchid (1958), It Started in Naples (1960), Heller in

This performance received international acclaim and was honoured with an Academy Award for Best Actress.

when her mother died of cancer. Her return to mainstream films in Prêt-à-Porter (1994) ("Ready to Wear") was well-received, although the film as a whole was not. She followed this up with her biggest U.S. hit in years, the comedy Grumpier Old Men (1995) in which she played a sexy divorcée who seduces Walter Matthau. Sophia Loren Trivia She served an 18-day prison sentence in Italy in 1982 for tax evasion. Her American films included El Cid (1961), The Fall of the Roman Empire (1964), Arabesque (1966), El hombre de La Mancha (1972), and The Cassandra Crossing (1976). She gained a wider respect with her Italian films, especially Marriage Italian Style (1964) and A Special Day (1977). During these years she received a second Oscar nomination and won five Golden Globe Awards. In 1991 Sophia received an Honorary Academy Award for her body of work, and was declared "one of world cinema's greatest treasures." Later that year, she experienced a great loss

She may have been the voluptuous sex goddess as an adult. But, until age 14 she was a skinny child and considered an ugly duckling. Her nickname was "The Stick" and "Toothpick".

She performed two duets with Peter Sellers which were major hits in the UK pop chart. "Goodness Gracious Me" was released in 1960 and reached four and "Bangers and Mash" made it to the top 20 in 1961. While filming Boy on a Dolphin (1957), Sophia was required to walk in a trench in order to give audiences the impression that her diminutive co-star, Alan Ladd, was taller than she. Has one sister, Maria Scicolone (born 1938); and two half-brothers, Giuliano Scicolone (born 1943) and Giuseppe Scicolone (born 1946). Suffered from stage fright and, therefore, never appeared in a theatrical production. Won a Grammy Award in 2004 for Best Spoken Word Album for Children for her work in "Prokofiev: Peter and the Wolf/Beintus" along with former US President Bill Clinton and former Soviet Union President Mikhail Gorbachev. At times, male actors have been hesitant to appear with her, due to the fact that she stands nearly 5'9" and wears towering heels and tall hair that can make her look over 6 feet tall. Her "Best Actress" Academy Award was the first Oscar ever given for a performance in a "foreign-language" film.

She and Marcello Mastroianni appeared in 11 movies together: The Miller's Wife (1955), La viuda indomable (1978), What a Woman! (1956), A Special Day (1977), Los girasoles (1970), Ayer, hoy y maĂąana (1963), Marriage Italian Style (1964), La mujer del cura (1970), La ladrona, su padre y el taxista (1955), PrĂŞt-Ă -Porter (1994) and Pupa, Charlie y su gorila (1975).

Has appeared in the 2007 edition of the famous Pirelli Calendar at age 72, making her the oldest model in its history.

The Best Actress Oscar she won for Two Women (1960) was stolen by thieves from her Italian villa. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS) later replaced it for a small fee. Is one of five performers to win an Oscar playing a character that spoke mostly in a foreign language. The other are Marion Cotillard, Robert De Niro, Roberto Benigni and Benicio Del Toro.

Being one of the contestants at the 1950 Miss Italia competition, she earned the second place and was awarded "Miss Eleganza".

Turned down roles that went to Joan Collins on Dynasty (1981) and Gina Lollobrigida on Falcon Crest (1981). Husband Carlo Ponti was two years older than Sophia's mother. Has played the love interest of a much older man in the majority of her films, the most illustrative example being It Started in Naples (1960) with Clark Gable when she was 25 and he was 59.

Sophia quotes: [2014, about a famous 1957 photo of her stink-eyeing Jayne Mansfield's cleavage] “Listen. Look at the picture. Where are my eyes? I'm staring at her nipples because I am afraid they are about to come onto my plate. In my face, you can see the fear. I'm so frightened that everything in her dress is going to blow-BOOM!--and spill all over the table.”

Turned down the title role in Barbarella (1968). Despite being Italian, she was dubbed by Lydia Simoneschi and Rita Savagnone in the Italian versions of most of her films.

“Sex appeal is 50% what you've got and 50% what people think you've got.”

Man's Man: Cary Grant Cary Grant was born Archibald Alexander Leach on January 18, 1904 in Horfield, Bristol, England, to Elsie Maria (Kingdon) and Elias James Leach, who worked in a factory. At age nine, he came home from school one day and was told his mother had gone off to a seaside resort. However, the real truth was that she had been placed in a mental institution, where she would remain for years. He was never told about this and would not see his mother again until he was in his late 20s. We start our Man's Man feature with none other than one of the most debonair characters to ever grace the Silver Screen: Cary Grant. He was once told by an interviewer, "Everybody would like to be Cary Grant", and Grant is said to have replied, "So would I." And even today, many of us would. He left school at age 14, lying about his age and forging his father's signature on a letter to join Bob Pender's troupe of knockabout comedians.

In the 1950s and early 1960s, he had invented a man-of-theworld persona and a style "high comedy with polished words".

In July 1920, he was one of the eight Pender boys selected to go to the United States. Their show on Broadway, "Good Times", ran for 456 performances, giving Grant time to acclimatise. He would stay in America. Mae West wanted Grant for She Done Him Wrong (1933) because she saw his combination of virility, sexuality and the aura and bearing of a gentleman.

In To Catch a Thief (1955), he and Grace Kelly were allowed to improvise some of the dialogue. They knew what the director, Alfred Hitchcock, wanted to do with a scene, they rehearsed it, put in some clever double entendres that got past the censors, and then the scene was filmed.

His biggest box-office success was another Hitchcock 1950s film, North by Northwest (1959) made with Eva Marie Saint since Kelly was by that time Princess of Monaco.

He was married five times and divorced four times and had one child: Barbara Harris (11 April 1981 - 29 November 1986) (his death): Dyan Cannon (22 July 1965 - 21 March 1968) (1 child): Betsy Drake (25 December 1949 - 13 August 1962): Barbara Hutton (8 July 1942 - 30 August 1945): Virginia Cherrill (9 February 1934 - 26 March 1935). After Grant retired from the screen,

In 1999, the American Film Institute named Grant the second male star of Golden Age of Hollywood cinema (after Humphrey Bogart). Grant was known for comedic and dramatic roles; his best-known films include Bringing Up Baby (1938), The Philadelphia Story (1940), His Girl Friday (1940), Arsenic and Old Lace (1944), Notorious (1946), An Affair to Remember (1957), North by Northwest (1959) and Charade (1963).

he remained active. He accepted a position on the board of directors at Faberge. The position also permitted use of a private plane, which Grant could use to fly to see his daughter wherever her mother Dyan Cannon, was working.

He later joined the boards of Hollywood Park, the Academy of Magical Arts (The Magic Castle Hollywood, California), Western Airlines (acquired by Delta Airlines in 1987) and MGM.

He suffered a major stroke prior to performing in his one-man show at the Adler Theater in Davenport, Iowa on November 29, 1986. Passed away later that night at St. Luke's Hospital at 11:22pm. Cary Grant Trivia Became a father for the first time at age of 62 when his fourth wife Dyan Cannon gave birth to their daughter Jennifer Diane Grant (aka Jennifer Grant) on February 26, 1966. He gave his entire fee for The Philadelphia Story (1940) to the British war effort.

Grant stayed in good health until almost the end of his life, when he suffered a mild stroke in October 1984. In his last years, he undertook tours of the United States (and your editor cruised with him in 1982) in a one-man-show, "An Evening with Cary Grant", in which he would show clips from his films and answer audience questions.

He once phoned hotel mogul Conrad Hilton in Istanbul, Turkey, to find out why his breakfast order at the Plaza Hotel, which called for muffins, came with only 1-1/2 English muffins instead of two. When Grant insisted that the explanation (a hotel efficiency report had found that most people ate only three of the four halves brought to them) still resulted in being cheated out of a half, the Plaza Hotel changed its policy and began serving two complete muffins with breakfast. From then on, Grant often spoke of forming an English Muffin-Lovers Society, members of which would be required to report any hotel or restaurant that listed muffins on the menu and then served fewer than two.

"Susan, Susan, Susan" in Bringing Up Baby (1938). Was a great fan of Elvis Presley and attended his Las Vegas shows. He is seen discussing Elvis' performance with him backstage during the closing

credits of Elvis: That's the Way It Is (1970). Turned down the role of James Bond in Dr. No (1962), believing himself to be too old at age 58 to play the hero. The role went to Sean Connery instead.

Turned down roles opposite Audrey Hepburn in both Roman Holiday (1953) and Sabrina (1954); later he starred with her in Charade (1963).

Chosen by Empire magazine as one of the 100 Sexiest Stars in film history (#22) (1995).

Thanks mainly to the strength and physical dexterity he gained as an acrobat when he was young, he did a majority of his own stunts during his film career (far more than people would think).

Donated his entire salary for Arsenic and Old Lace (1944) ($100,000) to the U.S. War Relief Fund. He never said "Judy, Judy, Judy" in the movies, which he credits to Larry Storch, but he did say

Douglas Fairbanks was his boyhood idol, with Fairbanks' "healthy" tan being the inspiration for Grant's constantly dark skin.

director Alfred Hitchcock decided not to cast him because of the box office failure of Vertigo (1958), which Hitchcock blamed on Stewart for looking "too old" and chose Grant instead, even though he was actually four years older. Paramount Pictures named him Cary Grant when he began his film career, because of the similarity of the name to Gary Cooper, their biggest male star, (C.G. being an inversion of G.C.) and possibly because Clark Gable had the same initials. Gable and Cooper were born with their last names, however, with Grant having been born Archibald Leach. In His Girl Friday (1940), his character remarks, "Archie Leach said that", a reference to his real name. Was hyperopic or "far-sighted". That is why in many publicity stills, he is seen holding a pair of glasses. John Cleese's character in A Fish Called Wanda (1988) was named "Archie Leach" after Grant's real name. Replaced James Stewart as the hapless ad man Roger Thornhill in North by Northwest (1959). Stewart very much wanted the role, but

Initially accepted his role in Houseboat (1958) because he was dating Sophia Loren, whom he was madly in love with. After she went and married someone else, heartbroken, Cary wanted to back out. He could not, but the director made sure the production was a smooth one. Initially refused Stanley Donen's offer to appear in Charade (1963), but-realising that it was a great part-accepted it after a while. He made one stipulation: Audrey Hepburn had to chase him, not visa-versa. Always cited his To Catch a Thief (1955) co-star Grace Kelly as his favourite leading lady. He attended her state funeral in 1982 and wept throughout the televised service. He once said: “My formula for living is quite simple. I get up in the morning and I go to bed at night. In between, I occupy myself as best I can.

A Touch of Sauce Donald Fraser Gould McGill (28 January 1875 – 13 October 1962) was an English graphic artist whose name has become synonymous with the genre of saucy seaside postcards that were sold mostly in small shops in British coastal towns. The cards mostly feature an array of attractive young women, fat old ladies, drunken middle aged men, honeymoon couples and vicars. He has been called 'the king of the saucy postcard', and his work is collected and appreciated for his artistic skill, its power of social observation and earthy sense of humour. Even at the height of his fame he only earned three guineas a design, but today his original artwork can fetch thousands of pounds. McGill was born in London in 1875. He lost a foot in a school rugby accident, and, having studied at Blackheath Proprietary School where his best friend was Campbell Richard Hone, a future Bishop of Wakefield, spent most of his life in the Blackheath area of south-east London, living at 5 Bennett Park, SE3 – a blue plaque location.

He was a naval draughtsman until his career in postcards began accidentally in 1904 when an in-law encouraged him after seeing an illustrated get-well card he had made for a sick nephew. Within a year it was his full-time occupation. He studied art and married the daughter of the owner of Crowder's Music Hall in Greenwich. McGill spent virtually the whole of his career creating the distinctive colourwashed drawings which were then reproduced as postcards. He ranked his output according to their vulgarity as mild, medium and strong, with strong being much the best sellers. His family, however, was steadfastly respectable. He said of his two daughters, "They ran like stags whenever they passed a comic postcard shop". During the First World War he produced anti-German propaganda in the form of humorous postcards. Cards showed soldiers in training, and there were many light-hearted jokes about the Scottish soldier and his kilt. A few cards showed images of nursing sisters, and at least one showed three female munitions workers. In 1941, author George Orwell wrote an essay on McGill's work entitled "The Art of Donald McGill". Orwell stated that he was not sure if McGill was a real person or simply a trade name but concluded that in spite of the vulgarity and the artistic merits of the cards, he would be sorry to see them go. Approaching 80, McGill fell foul of several local censorship committees which culminated in a major trial in Lincoln on 15

July 1954 for breaking the Obscene Publications Act 1857. He was found guilty and fined £50 with £25 costs. In the late 1950s, the level of censorship eased off and the market recovered. McGill produced an estimated 12,000 designs, of which 200 million copies are estimated to have been printed. He died in 1962 with all his designs for the 1963 season already prepared. Despite their wide circulation, McGill earned no royalties from his designs; in his will, his estate was valued at just £735. One of his postcards, featuring a bookish man and an embarrassed pretty woman sitting under a tree, with the caption: "Do you like Kipling?" / "I don't know, you naughty boy, I've never kippled!", holds the world record for selling the most copies, at over 6 million. On 10 July 2010, McGill's grandson Patrick Tumber opened the Donald McGill Postcard Museum, created by James Bissell-Thomas in Ryde, Isle of Wight. In 1953, Ryde had witnessed police raids on five shops in the town and the seizure of over 5,000 postcards, the majority by McGill.

Where Are They Now: Dirty Dancing

It was 31 years ago, on August 21, 1997, that Jennifer Grey and Patrick Swayze did their classic latin moves in Dirty Dancing, becoming the sleeper of a spicy summer romance box office hit at the 'movies'. The young lovers meet at Kellerman’s, an upscale summer resort where Johnny Castle (Swayze) works as a dance instructor and Baby Houseman (Grey) is visiting with her family. Baby ends up at a party for the staff and Johnny catches her eye. As she swoons over him during the hot summer days, he teaches her how to dance. The two find romance and perform together at the summer’s closing show, wowing audiences with their passion and skill, and of course, the lift.

The film has has earned nearly $214 million at the box office and had a remake released in 2017. Sadly, Patrick Swayze and Jerry Orbach died in 2009 and 2004, respectively. But read on to see what Jennifer Grey, Kelly Bishop and others are up to now according to the Hollywood Reporter.

Following his leading role in Dirty Dancing, Swayze was a hot commodity, starring in movies like in Road House (1989), Ghost (1990) and Point Break (1991) along with many other films over the years. In January 2008, Swayze was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer and died from the disease in September 2009 at the age of 57.

After her role as Baby Houseman, Jennifer Grey continued acting, with roles in numerous movies and TV shows. On the small screen, she appeared on Friends, starred in ABC's It's Like, You Know..., twirled again on Dancing With The Stars and, most recently, returned to the '80s via Amazon's comedy series Red Oaks. On the film side, she had roles in movies like Bounce and In Your Eyes.

Family's short-lived Sutton Foster starrer Bunheads. On the film side, some of her post-Dancing credits include Six Degrees of Separation, Private Parts (1997), Wonder Boys (2000) and Friends With Kids. Jane Brucker (Lisa Houseman)

Best known for his 12-year-long run as Lennie Briscoe on Law & Order, Jerry Orbach was diagnosed with prostate cancer in 1994, which he fought for 10 years, until his death at age 69 in 2004. Kelly Bishop (Marjorie Houseman) Photo Courtesy of Vestron

Phillips in Curse of the Crystal Eye (1991). She was married to Richard Marx from 1989 to 2014 and has three sons: Lucas, Jesse and Brandon. Not A Lot Of People Know That

Dirty Dancing came near the end of Cynthia Rhodes’ acting career, with her role as Penny Johnson only followed by her role of Vickie

The very famous scene where Johnny and Baby are practicing their dancing and they are crawling towards each other on the floor wasn't intended to be part of the film; they were just messing around and were warming up to do the real scene, but the director liked it so much he kept it in the film.

During the scene where Baby and Johnny are dancing in the woods and later in the water - since that part of the movie was shot in October at Mountain Lake Virginia, which is when all the leaves on the trees start changing colours - the trees all around the lake and for that scene were spray-painted green due to the fact that the time frame of the movie was set in the summer. If you look closely during that scene in the woods, you can see leaves falling off the trees - this doesn't happen in the summer. Jennifer Grey, at 27, was 10 years older than the character of Baby. During her audition, she had 5 minutes to prove she could play younger, and that she had the moves for the role.

Patrick Swayze was offered $6 million to reprise his role as Johnny for a sequel. Swayze wasn't a fan of sequels and turned it down. The song "She's Like The Wind" was co-written by Patrick Swayze with Stacy Widelitz and sung by Patrick Swayze. The crew had to make up Cynthia Rhodes to look worse during the agony scene, because she was too beautiful without makeup to look convincing. Kelly Bishop is only 14 and 16 years older, respectively, than Jane Brucker and Jennifer Grey, who played her daughters. When Johnny Castle is dancing with Penny, she is wearing a custom made red dress that crisscrossed in the back. Patrick Swayze kept getting his fingers stuck. The tight schedule allowed only two weeks for rehearsal and 44 days for filming, as it was already the tail end of summer. Patrick Swayze and Cynthia

In the last scene, on-screen Mom Kelly Bishop says of Baby's dancing, "I think she gets it from me." Not so fast, Mom! Bishop was a well-known Broadway singer and dancer, but on-screen dad Jerry Orbach began his career in Broadway musicals and the father of Jennifer Grey is Tony- and Oscar-winner Joel Grey. Their most famous Broadway musicals 'A Chorus Line' for Bishop and 'Chicago' for Orbach - had a famous rivalry for box office receipts and awards when they opened within months of each other in 1975.

Rhodes previously worked together in the music video for Toto's song "Rosanna" Even though the movie is set in 1963 and several of the dance songs are from that period, the song "I've Had the Time of My Life" was written in 1987. Patrick Swayze wore a girdle to look thinner and younger. At 35 years old, Patrick Swayze was clearly way too old for the role of Johnny by 15 years, and was only 8 years younger than the actress playing Baby's mother.

Introduction from a Traffic Police Officer: My name is Francisco Javier Morales Herrera, I am a traffic police motorcyclist and this is my story. Since 2007, I have been based in the city of Torrevieja (Alicante), located south of the Valencian community, southeast of Spain. A place that, because of its climate and geographical situation, is chosen every year by thousands of people who decide to spend their holidays, or to relocate to Spain. Over the years, patrolling the roads of the province of Alicante, I have often noticed that foreign drivers are not aware that they are violating traffic laws, leading to infractions or accidents, which could have been avoided with adequate knowledge of the current regulations in our country. Infractions such as transporting a child under 135cm in the front seat, wearing a Bluetooth earphone in one ear, towing a car behind a caravan or not signalling a load protruding from the rear of a vehicle, are common infractions in Spain committed by foreigners, but in other countries of the European Union they are not sanctionable since they are totally legal practices. Access to information must be a right to which all citizens have, regardless of their country of origin, so I decided to carry out a translation of the Road Safety Act into English so that no more violations occur or accidents due to lack of knowledge and thus improve road safety on our roads. Translating the law into English, we can reach millions of people, who can consult our laws before coming to Spain, and be informed about any questions that may arise in terms of traffic issues. In addition, being an ebook, we can read this law on our mobile device, and consult it at any time. Being in an electronic format, it will allow us to update it instantly with any change or modification that may occur. As police officers, we are an example of a commitment to society, so we have an obligation and duty to respond to the demands that it poses. Therefore, with a community that currently exceeds 101 nationalities in the province of Alicante, I firmly believe that more than a right, it is almost an obligation to offer them, traffic legislation translated into English. I hope this eBook helps to improve the safety of our roads, and helps those interested to better understand Spanish traffic law.

Fear of being caught must rise, says IAM Roadsmart Fear of being caught must rise, say IAM RoadSmart as hundreds of thousands continue to flout mobile phone and seatbelt laws The UK’s biggest independent road safety charity IAM RoadSmart is concerned that too many drivers continue to ignore warnings about the dangers of hand-held mobile phones and not wearing a seatbelt – putting countless lives in danger. This follows the results of a major Department for Transport survey revealing hundreds of thousands of motorists were still ignoring seatbelt and mobile phone usage laws in 2017. The survey found that in 2017, 1.1% of all vehicle drivers were observed using a hand-held mobile phone while driving on weekdays in Great Britain, of which 0.4% were observed holding the phone to their ear, with twice as many (0.8%) spotted holding the phone in their hand. The worst offenders were taxi/private hire drivers (3.3%), followed by van drivers (2.1%), then car drivers (1%). While there is good news that seatbelt wearing rates remain high with 96.5% of all vehicle drivers observed using a seatbelt on weekdays in 2017, that means 3.5% of all vehicle drivers are choosing not to wear a seatbelt which can be a matter of life and death if you are involved in a collision. Seatbelt used varied with 93.1% of front seat passengers and 90.7% of rear seat passengers buckling up in Great Britain. For car drivers, 98.6% were observed using a seatbelt in Great Britain in 2017. Neil Greig, IAM RoadSmart director of policy and research, said: “In spite of these being small percentages, this still amounts to hundreds of thousands of people who daily flout the law and put themselves and others at risk. “The best way of tackling this ever-present issue is to make people believe there is a high chance of being caught. This could start tomorrow if consistent guidelines on using mobile speed camera vans to enforce seatbelt and mobile phones laws were issued."

Torrevieja Translators are happy to announce that we are now official affiliates of DGT (Tráfico) and can now process a lot more Driving Licence Exchanges quicker than before. As the demand has been huge, we are no longer accepting “Attending With” appointments but will complete these for the few clients that have requested this service and paid their deposit. We are in the process of contacting all clients who either have dates from us later in this month (11th Feb onwards) or the start of next month, to move everyone that wants it, forward to next week, or the following week. plus clients who have completed medicals but are awaiting a date for their licence exchange. As many of our clients are spread over this part of Spain, we are going to offer four drop off and pick up points in different areas to help make it easier and more convenient. These are located in Quesada (Rojales), San Miguel, Torrevieja and Zenia Boulevard. We will contact all customers with details shortly on the dates and times (all will be in the early evening and weekly, so don’t worry if you can’t do it next week, there are plenty more dates to do it before 29th March) but you must first have your Driver's Medical completed before we can do the final stage of the exchange. We are really pleased about this development as many British people wish to have their licence exchanged and DGT (Tráfico) have recognised that we can process these a lot faster with this new affiliated status. Sebastian, Brandon and Clarke from the Torrevieja Translator team are here to help make this process as easy and fast as we can for all our clients.

Mazda unveils MX-5 30TH ANNIVERSARY Edition in Racing Orange Three decades since the launch of the MX-5, the 30th Anniversary Edition goes on sale in 2019. Exclusively offered in unique Racing Orange just 3,000 cars will be sold globally. Available to order now, the UK market will get 600 cars – 400 convertible and 200 RF. Three decades after the 1989 Chicago Motor Show was the stage for the debut of the original MX-5, Mazda has today unveiled the MX-5 30th Anniversary Edition at the 2019 Chicago Motor Show, which runs until 18 February. After 30 years and more than 1 million units sold, Mazda feels that the MX-5 has grown into more than simply Mazda’s creation. It now belongs to the enthusiasts around the world who have supported the development of the model and helped it become the world’s best-selling two-seater roadster. Launched as both a tribute to these MX-5 fans and as a mark of the high hopes the firm has for the future of its sports car, the 30th Anniversary Edition is exclusively offered in the newly developed Racing Orange body paint, a strikingly vivid colour that marks out this special MX-5. In addition to Racing Orange, the MX-5 30th Anniversary Edition features forged aluminium Rays wheels developed exclusively for the MX-5 in cooperation with Rays Co Ltd. and a 30th anniversary badge displaying the model’s serial number. Other unique features include orange brake callipers, and for the first time in the UK, Brembo front brakes. Inside, the bespoke feel continues with orange accents on the seats, door trim, dashboard, steering wheel, air vents and gear lever, while Recaro seats and Alcantara trim on the door trim and instrument panel add a sense of exclusivity. The 30th Anniversary Edition also features Apple Carplay and Android Auto as standard.

Just 3,000 cars will be produced globally, and fittingly for one of the world’s biggest MX-5 markets, the UK will receive 600 – 400 convertible and 200 RF. Marked out by its black two-tone roof, the Retractable Fastback RF is £29,895, while the convertible is £28,095. Commenting on the launch of 30th Anniversary MX-5, Mazda Motors UK Managing Director, Jeremy Thomson, said: “in the three decades since the launch of the original model over 130,000 Mazda MX-5s have been sold in the UK. This is a sports car that has resonated with enthusiastic British drivers ever since its debut and four generations on it’s as popular as ever. Along the way, it has remained true to the original principle of being an affordable, lightweight and above all fun-to-drive roadster. Today it is the very essence of the Jinba Ittai driver-and-car-as-one philosophy that goes into every Mazda.” adding, “and with its unique detailing, generous equipment levels, exclusivity and bold Racing Orange paint, the 30th Anniversary Edition is the perfect way to celebrate three decades of this iconic sports car”. As with all 2.0-litre 2019 Mazda MX-5 models, the 30th Anniversary features the new 184ps version of the Skyactiv-G engine, while across both body types this rangetopping special edition comes with a six-speed manual gearbox, Bilstein dampers, strut-brace and limited slip differential. Available to order now, the first UK customer deliveries will begin in the summer.

The ultimate Italian Job Tour to Commemorate the film's 50TH ANNIVERSARY Classic car owners are being invited to commemorate the 50th anniversary of The Italian Job on an extraordinary 11-day driving tour which takes in many of the famous roads and locations featured in the movie. The Ultimate Italian Job Tour, created by Classics on the Road and the Jaguar E-type Club, will treat drivers and their companions to some of Europe’s most fabulous roads and scenery as its route passes through France, Italy and Switzerland between October 6th and 17th 2019. Highlights of the Tour will include a driving experience on the rooftop test track of Fiat’s former Lingotto factory in Turin, which appeared in the movie’s legendary car chase; driving some of the most spectacular mountain roads in Europe; and an evening with key personalities involved in making the film. Participants in the Ultimate Italian Job Tour will be accompanied throughout the 1,400-mile drive by a swarm of red, white and blue Minis, and by the red Jaguar E-type roadster, orange Lamborghini Miura P400, and silver Aston Martin DB4 convertible seen in the movie. The Tour visits the St. Bernard Pass, scene of the film’s opening credits, where the Miura was blown-up in a tunnel and the E-type and DB4 also met their fates. While in Turin, Tour participants will spend a few days in the company of The Italian Job producer Michael Deeley; stunt director Rémy Julienne; actor David Salamone, who played Dominic, one of Charlie Croker’s gang of ‘Chinless Wonders’; and subject-expert Matthew Field, whose new book, The Self Preservation Society – 50 years of The Italian Job, will be published later this year.

The three-day Italian Job experience will also include a private screening of the film; a ‘soirée’ hosted by Field; a Walking Tour in the city of car-chase locations with commentary by Field, visiting the Baroque staircase of the Palazzo Madama, the crowded porticoes on Via Roma, the cathedral steps and the weir on the River Po. Tour participants will also receive a copy of his book. In keeping with its theme, the Ultimate Italian Job Tour is open exclusively to E-types, and to pre-1970 Lamborghinis, Aston Martins, and Minis. The price – €5,495 per person in double occupancy or €6,575 per person in single occupancy – includes accommodation in carefully selected four- and five-star hotels in France and Italy; three lunches and 10 dinners; a comprehensive Road Book with Tulip notes, maps, rally plates, information about places being visited, and recommendations of other places worth seeing; a private evening screening of The Italian Job; and guided visits to the Domaine Pommery champagne cellars, Arc-et-Senans Royal Saltworks, Museo Nazionale dell Automobile in Turin, Mont Blanc Skyway, and Matisse Museum in Le Cateau-Cambrésis. Tour participants will be accompanied by the event organisers, including E-type Club co-founders Philip and Julie Porter in their E-type, the original Italian Job roadster, 848 CRY; a film crew and professional photographer; and a mechanic. Philip Porter commented: “The Ultimate Italian Job Tour is going to be amazing. It will be unique and probably the last opportunity to celebrate this iconic movie with key people from the film, combined with fantastic driving, the star cars and informed visits to most of the charismatic locations”.

Can't afford The Italian Job or don't own one their cars, then the Wacky Rally might be the thing for you. What is Wacky Rally? The Concept behind Wacky Rally Essentially a banger rally is a collection of vehicles that have been purchased or otherwise obtained through various ingenious methods, and then personalised in a variety of glorious and imaginative ways. Ideas range from the BatMobile, animals of various denominations, and pirate ships to hippy cars, tanks, and crazy paint jobs. However, that is the nuts and bolts; doing up the car is incredibly fun but driving it across Europe is where the real fun begins. The shared challenge, the camaraderie and the memorable stories are what make the wacky rally, Europe's favourite car rally, a trip you'll remember for the rest of your life. The Reality of the rally Don't be fooled, this is no holiday. The rally is extremely fun but it's also a great challenge. Obstacles are part and parcel of the rally and the bond you will have with your fellow driver/s can only be described as a two year relationship rolled into four days. One thing you must understand about this rally is that it's not a race in any way, shape or form. This is not a poor man's Gumball or a thinly disguised dart along the autobahns in a cheap motor. This, ladies and gentleman, is a fun, all inclusive jolly for people who enjoy a challenge and maybe a drink or two along the way. And even if you don't drink there are always like minded people along for the ride.

The People on the rally The Wacky Rally car rally is for anyone and everyone: the list is endless. The important thing to know is it doesn't matter what you do as long as you are here to respect yourself and others on the rally. Barmy to Barcelona 2019 Dates: July 5th - 8th: No of Days: 4 This fantastic banger rally takes in the amazing Swiss Alps, rolling hills of Italy, French Riviera and the Spanish Catalan capital. Is there anything else you could ask for in a banger rally? Day 1: Lille to Thun We start at Lille at 7:30am and head to Thun. We do five countries in one drive today (it's a long route but we didn't put Switzerland where it is). Thun is a stunning Swiss town set in the middle of the Alps and today's meeting point is a bar next to a picturesque weir. Day 2:Day of Days The second day of the rally is where the fun driving really begins, after leaving Thun we head off over the Alps which is a stunning drive passing over the Gran St Bernard pass where the Italian job was filmed (bus over the cliff scene). Day 2 is an amazing challenge day with 5 mountain passes for the hardened driver. Day 3: Monte Carlo or Bust Travelling from the heart of the mountains and stunning countryside we head off to the French Riviera over one more picturesque mountain pass. We pass by Monte Carlo and for those who don't mind arriving a bit later you can always drop down to have a look. Day 4: Barcelona or Busted The destination after Arles is Barcelona. This is a short drive so we make a detour to the Costa Brava to enjoy beers and ice cream at Lloret De Mar before heading off. The final party and award ceremony will be held at a lively sports bar on Las Ramblas.

Beginner's guide to wine At first glance the subject of wine can seem overwhelming and frankly rather intimidating, what with sniffing the bouquet and judging the finish a novice wine taster could easily be put off. However there really is no need, as all you need to remember is that wine is supposed to be enjoyable, so simply buy the wine you most like the taste of regardless of current fashions or trends. To help you get started there are just three simple steps to remember when choosing a wine: look, smell and taste. But if you have time and the inclination, understanding the basics of wine types, selections, storage and tasting will add new dimensions to your wine experience. A good way to get to know more about wine is to start by taking a grape variety you know, then work your way through different examples from around the world. Lovers of Aussie Chardonnay, for instance, might enjoy barrel-matured white Burgundy. Or if you've already discovered fruit-filled Chilean Cabernet, then you really need to try the aristocratic reds of Bordeaux. Find out for yourself why the wines of New Zealand have become so popular, or experience the everlasting appeal of Burgundy. Just a few rungs up the price ladder, flavours become more intense, making it far easier to stick to a single glass. When exploring, don't be afraid to ask questions of waiters or shop staff - if properly trained they will be full of useful advice. Generally speaking a good wine can be purchased for well under £10 these days, but try to avoid the really cheap offers, as these are rarely the best value for money. Excise duty, VAT, transport and packaging are virtually the same whether it's a basic vin de table or from a prestigious estate. By paying a little extra - say £5 to £7 - you get a big increase in wine quality.

If you find the thought of buying wine in a specialist wine shop too daunting, then why not buy from the comfort of your armchair? More people are ordering their wine online thanks to the convenience and range of wines on offer. Online wine merchants invariably provide more information about their wines than you will find on the label when perusing the supermarket shelves. When pairing wine with a specific food or meal there are just a few things to remember. Like a good marriage, wine and food were meant for each other, as each enhances and strengthens the experience of the whole. So why does it feel so daunting to try to pair foods with wines? If you are under the misapprehension that there is a hefty list of rules and guidelines that state which wine can be paired with which food then you are in for a surprise. The truth is there are no rules when matching your favourite wines with your favourite recipes. Yes there are popular matches and well-used pairings of wine and food but ultimately the best match is what pleases your palate. It is truly a personal preference, but if you don't feel confident enough to trust your own taste you can always ask for some more experienced advice. With expert wine merchants available at your fingertips it has become a whole lot easier to learn more about wines and enjoy them at very competitive prices. The only golden rule would be to avoid cheap supermarket wine and you'll discover a little good wine really does go a long way.

Bring back the cocktail party Whatever happened to the tradition of the Cocktail Party? When all the ladies dragged out their best LBD (little black dress) and the men donned smart trousers and jackets, for the purposes of making small talk around a collection of light snacks and a glass or two of something alcoholic? Having been pushed back into the realms of the "passe" it seems the occasion is undergoing something of a revival, particularly in these cashstrapped times, to encourage business into hotels and restaurants between the hours of 4pm and 6pm. It is now also fashionable for wedding receptions to be preceded by a cocktail hour which often also includes entertainment such as live music. The type of food and drink served can vary, while the guest list is likely to be intimate, with all encouraged to mingle while cocktails are served by a professional or dedicated bartender. Although many believe the inventor of the cocktail party was Alec Waugh of London, an article in the St. Paul Pioneer Press in May 1917, credited its invention to a certain Mrs. Julius S. Walsh Jr. of St. Louis, Missouri. Mrs. Walsh invited 50 guests to her house on a Sunday at high noon for a one-hour affair. "The party scored an instant hit" the newspaper declared, and stated that, within weeks, cocktail parties had become "a St. Louis institution". Such an event is now welcomed by those venues seeking to encourage new ways of bringing in patrons - and private hosts who want to entertain a larger number of people than for a formal dinner without opening their doors to a full-on party.

When planning for a cocktail party, many experts on entertaining suggest hosts should assume at least three beverages per guest, unlike a dinner or reception where heavier foods are expected to be served and fewer mixed drinks are served. The party may include a variety of finger foods, light snacks or canapĂŠs and the invitation should mention any special food arrangements, especially if the party is scheduled during regular dinner hours. Cocktail parties are a great way to entertain, because they accommodate any kind of guest list, ranging from neighbours to business associates. Regardless of what kind of crowd you're entertaining, however, there are a few basic guidelines to throwing a fabulous cocktail party... Set the appropriate time: The traditional time-frame for a cocktail party is two to three hours in length held between 6pm and 10pm Buy more than enough ice: Remember that you're not just using it for drinks, but also for chilling bottles and cans. Have a variety of glasses on hand, depending on the variety of drinks you plan to offer You should offer wine glasses for wines, juice and water; straight-sided highballs for tall drinks; tumblers for spirits and juices; and martini glasses. In terms of quantity, be ready with approximately twice as many glasses as you'll have guests. Stock your bar For the wine drinkers, have one bottle for every two people, assuming five servings per bottle. For the beer drinkers, have one six-pack for every two people, assuming 12 oz. servings. Get one or two spirits that can be made into a variety of cocktails (probably vodka, rum, gin, scotch, bourbon, blended whiskey, or tequila). Don't forget mixers and garnishes, including orange juice, soda, tonic, ginger ale, cola, grenadine, tomato juice, Tabasco, lemons, limes, horseradish, and Worcestershire sauce.

Prepare the menu Aim for variety (meat, vegetarian, hot, cold, spicy, and sweet). If you're not serving dinner, estimate 6 bites per person, but remember that it's better to have too much food than not enough and that luxury items such as prawns and smoked salmon will be light and well-received by most guests. (See recipe for Smoked Salmon Crostini below). Coffee Offer coffee to your guests towards the end of the party as a courtesy, but remember that coffee does not help increase sobriety. Taxi Keep the number of a local taxi service handy for those guests lacking a designated driver.

COCKTAIL PARTY CATERING SUGGESTIONS Smoked Salmon Crostini This recipe makes around 30 crostini. Serves 10-15 Ingredients 1 thin, long baguette : 2 tbsp extra virgin olive oil : 2 tbsp melted butter : 140ml Greek yogurt : 6 tbsp cream cheese : 2 tbsp fresh chopped dill 1/2 tbsp fresh lemon juice : Salt to taste : 100g smoked salmon : Capers for garnish METHOD Preheat oven to 400 degrees F or 200 degrees C Slice the baguette along a diagonal into even 5mm slices using a bread knife. Place the slices on a baking sheet. Stir together the melted butter and olive oil. Brush the tops of the bread pieces with the oil and butter mixture. Place the bread into the oven and let it toast for 8-10 minutes until the bottoms of the bread slices are golden brown and toasted. While baguette slices are toasting, place Greek yogurt, cream cheese, dill, and lemon juice into a food processor. Process for about 30 seconds until the ingredients are well combined. Add salt to taste and process again to combine. Cut the smoked salmon into pieces large enough to top the baguette slices. When the baguette slices have cooled, top each slice with 1 tsp of the Greek yogurt mixture. Top the Greek yogurt mixture with a slice of smoked salmon. Place another small dollop of Greek yogurt mixture in the centre of the smoked salmon slice. Top the small dollop with a couple of capers and serve immediately.

Pet Dogs make you happy Life is better with dogs. Not only because they're adorable weirdos, but because they make their people better. Nearly all (93%) dog parents in the U.S. say their dog has made them a better person in at least one way, according to a study released by BarkBox, Bark & Co's monthly box of goodies for dogs and their humans. The first BarkBox Dog Parent Study found that dogs overwhelmingly have had a positive impact on a range of emotional, behavioural and even physical qualities in their people. Seven in ten (71%) dog parents say their pup has made them happier people, with nearly four in five saying it's easier to wake up in the morning because their dog greets them. About half of pup parents say their dog has made them more patient (54%), responsible (52%) or affectionate (47%). More than four in five (83%) say their dog has made them more active, with 72% saying their dog plays a role in their exercise decisions. In addition, dogs are the ultimate therapists with 85% of dog parents saying their dog has helped them get through a difficult time in their life. You Say "Boundaries!" Dog People Say, "What Are Those?" Long gone are the days of "ownership" and relegating dog to tiny houses in the back yard. Today's generation of modern dog parents welcome their pups into every area of their lives, even the bedroom and bathroom There's no such thing as oversharing when it comes to dogs. Nearly half (49%) of dog parents say their dog always or

frequently shares the bed with them and more than a third (36%) say they'd sleep in an uncomfortable position to keep their dog next to them at night. One third (33%) admit they have gotten intimate with someone while their dog was in the room. More than two in five (43%) dog parents always or frequently allow their dog to follow them into the bathroom while they're using it. Dog parents today look for every opportunity to spend time with their dog and, in many ways, treat them just like human members of the family. (And sometimes better than human members of the family!) One in four pup parents take their dogs to social gatherings (26%) and about one in five (19%) have snuck their dog into a place where dogs are not allowed. More than a third (34%) will sometimes take their pup on dates with their significant other or a potential mate. Nearly one in five (19%) wish their dog could be an acceptable wedding guest. Nearly half (45%) admit to dressing up their dog in clothing and more than one in five (22%) dog parents have thrown their dog a birthday party. Your Reply When People Say You Spend Too Much Time With Your Dog: Bite Me There's no denying the genuine love that people have for their dogs. More than four in five (83%) dog people consider their pup to be their best friend, validating the old adage. In fact, close to nine in ten (87%) dog parents say they love their dog more than they ever thought possible and more than half (56%) wish their dog could understand how much they mean to them. For many, the bond between man and dog even rivals the selfless love between humans.

On average, Americans in relationships who tell their furry friend they love them do so six times per day, which is as often as they tell their significant other. Nearly nine in ten dog parents (87%) admit they're more accepting of their dog doing something than a human, and around half of them say snoring (52%), eating treats throughout the day (48%) or making a mess in the house (47%) are more tolerable. More than one in four (28%) dog parents have shared a secret with their dog that they haven't told anyone else. Nearly all dog parents (97%) would be willing to do something to make their pup happier, with many even willing to uproot their lives! In fact, close to two in five (38%) of them would move to a house or apartment with a bigger yard so their dog could have better playtime. The study also found that buying toys and treats each month was a top way that dog parents make their dogs happy, which is only confirmed by the rapid growth of BarkBox. Since launching in 2012, BarkBox has shipped more than 30 million toys and treats to dearly loved pups in the U.S. and Canada. The curated box of all-natural treats, chews and fun toys designed – from the packaging to products – to create moments of insane joy for dogs and their people has a new, fun theme each month. Dog-obsessed experts paw-pick the best treats and innovative toys to match a dog's unique needs, including allergies or heavy chewers. Learn more about BarkBox at www.barkbox.com.

How to Feel Motivated When You Aren't Robert Landau See if you can relate to the following; It's morning. After a long and restful sleep, you all of a sudden hear the sound of something invading the amazing peace you found throughout the night. It's your alarm clock! It happens to be ringing so loud you just want to pick it up and throw it across the bedroom. The day has finally arrived. The big meeting is happening in just two hours and you realise that you have so much to do to get yourself ready for what could indeed be a lifechanging event. You've been preparing for this for weeks and it's finally here. How do you feel about the upcoming event that is now just hours away? While it all looks good on paper, if you have to be honest with yourself...the emotions you are feeling connected with the event are an entirely different story. As you survey your thoughts about today, a door seems to slam shut in your face, figuratively...not literally. You realise that you just aren't motivated or even the least bit excited about the day that is in the process of getting started. Motivation is the key word here and you just don't have any! "I just don't feel like it!", you say over and over to yourself. "If I'm going to get this done and get through it, I'm going to have to find some energy somewhere and at least pretend that I care. This isn't good, it just isn't good!" Does this sound familiar? So many times we'll reach a place in life where we just aren't motivated to take the next steps that appear before us. The question then becomes; how do we move forward in a positive way if we don't really feel like it?

#1 - You're only human We aren't here to feel totally psyched about everything all the time. If we did it just might be that we aren't being totally honest and in touch with ourselves. To not feel totally into everything you're supposed to be into is OK. That's life. #2 - Be kind to yourself in the midst of feeling negative Give yourself a break and understand that the lows in life are equally important as experiencing the highs in life. It is often said that to experience happiness we also must experience unhappiness from time to time otherwise how could we truly know what real happiness is? We live in a world of duality so as long as we create a healthy balance between the two, all is good. #3 - Do you believe that you can indeed be positively motivated about the issue at hand? Life is about learning how to convert negatives into positives. The only way that will happen is if you believe and are willing to take the steps to get there. If you don't want such a shift to occur or if you happen to have a deep-seated belief that it's just not possible...then it's just not possible!

#4 - Just do it! Figure out what it will take for you to feel motivated once again. Consider the possibility that it might not be as difficult as you think. For example; what are the three positives you can find in the midst of the negatives concerning the situation? There usually are at least three. You might have to dig deep to find them but they are usually there just waiting for you to discover them. Focus on the positives you've found, feel what they feel like within you and that alone can make the shift you need to make it through the task at hand. #5 - You've got the power We often forget just how incredibly powerful we truly are. Are you a victim of life's highs and lows or are you a creator and willing participant in your life? The "True You" knows that answer to that question. You are an amazing person and you came here to prove to yourself that you are just that. When you happen to forget how amazing you truly are from time to time, realise that remembering is just around the corner. Clouds are always temporary and can only obscure the light of a clear day for so long. Feeling motivated or the lack thereof is a choice. The same energy it takes to feel a lack of motivation is the same energy it takes to feel totally motivated. You are in control. Make the choices in life to serve you in a positive and productive way. Even if your mind-chatter of an ego tries to convince you otherwise. Feel your power, believe in yourself, do it! Picking the best airplane seat By Keith Nicol You probably all know that you can save money by booking your flight on specific days of the week at specific times and taking advantage of special offers and booking ahead. On busy flights, especially long haul, you can also make money if you get bumped off your flight. But what about actually enjoying your flight? It all comes down to your personal preference—and your seat number. These days, the budget airlines all give the option of buying your seats before checkin, and if travelling with companions, almost forcing you to do so, if you wish to sit together. But that aside, lets have a look at where you might wish to seat on your next flight. The comfort zone It's no surprise that the premium seats and first class are located at the front of the plane. On economy flights there is usually more leg room too. They are the best seats in the house. Importantly, it puts significant distance between yourself and the jet engines, As an added bonus, you will receive your snack and food first plus, what ever passes for duty free. The Sleep Zone Get a window seat on the left side in the middle section. Why the left? Usually no doors on short flight airplanes. Those seats are often off-centre so it provides a better spot to lay your head. The middle of an aircraft also ensures you won't be bothered by bathroom lines or noisy galleys.

Travel: Who is the Most Annoying Holiday Traveler? The holiday seasons are traditionally that time of year when far-flung families gather together to reconnect with one another, exchange gifts and share in a holiday feast. According to the U.S. Travel Association, visiting relatives was the leading reason for leisure travel in 2018, so it is no surprise that the holiday seasons, be they Christmas or Easter, are a hectic time of year for travel. While most holiday travellers are in a festive spirit, there will invariably be some "bad apples" who, whether they mean to or not, can spoil an otherwise enjoyable travel experience. Earlier this year, TravelocityÂŽ surveyed more than 1,500 people to find out which holiday traveler is the most annoying, and the three most mentioned culprits were: "The Oversharer": Not always, but usually, one for the ladies: This passenger is excited to be going home to see family. Really excited. So excited that she feels the need to share stories about every single relative (from her third cousin Bessie to her oh-so-adorable two-year old nephew). And thanks to the magic of social media, she is able to spend the entire flight sharing pictures of all of them. "The Just One More Cocktail Guy": To this passenger, the holidays are about celebrating at 90 proof. After celebrating the season at the bar, he stumbles into his aisle seat singing carols (while getting most of the lyrics wrong) and continually rings the call button throughout the flight for "just one more Jack and cola."

"The Happy, Hoppy, Easter Bunny Passenger": In his mission to get home in time for Easter Sunday dinner, this passenger ignores the raging cold/flu that has transformed him into a mucus factory. Additionally, he is invariably seated in a middle seat so that he can share his "bounty" with as many people as possible. In the process of determining the most annoying holiday traveler, Travelocity also found some helpful travel hints within the data: Passengers looking to switch seats to be closer to (or farther from) their traveling companions are best off asking a woman, as men are twice as likely to be annoyed by a "seat switcher." Flyers who have had a couple of "adult beverages" prior to boarding would be well-advised to avoid millennials, as they are almost two times as likely to be annoyed by a "tipsy traveler." Travelocity encourages travellers to "Wander Wisely™" and is dedicated to being the champion of the customer with its Customer 1st Guarantee, making the traveling experience both simple and memorable with competitive prices, 24/7 customer service and more. Based in Dallas, Texas, Travelocity is owned by Expedia, Inc., one of the world's leading travel companies, with an extensive brand portfolio that includes many of the world's leading online travel properties.

ROSALEDA FASTIGHETER www.facebook.com/rosaledafastigheter/ www.rosaledafastigheter.se info@rosaledafastigheter.se Hej, Jag heter Maria Johansson Cruz.

Titanic: The Reconstruction : Alicante May 22 - Nov 10

Titanic The Reconstruction, is all set to be the 2019 star exhibition in Alicante this year. The exhibition can be visited from May 22 to November 10 in the Exhibition Hall of the Fish Market. Following the success of similar expos in Valencia, this an emotive macro exhibition that immerses the visitor of life aboard the Titanic through objects, stories and recreations of cabins and onboard reproductions.

Visitors can view a spectacular model of the Titanic that contains many small details, in a huge reconstruction of the liner at 1:30 scale. It's 12 meters long, 4.20 high and 3.90 meters wide, in addition to various contents related to the iconic ship. The original "Titanic car", manufactured in Detroit (USA), in 1909, a Brush D.24, which, moreover, is recognised as the oldest car in the world that can still circulate, is, together with Enrique Gran's original painting "El SueĂąo del Titanic", another of the jewels of the exhibition.

This exhibition, which shows images, objects and original documents, along with recreations of parts of the ship that no longer exist, takes one on a journey through such icons as the smallest of objects, a ring of the passenger Millvina Dean, to the largest (the reconstruction of the ship), which serve as tools to tell the true stories of what happened on board in its four unique days of life.

The stories are told by its protagonists, survivors of the tragedy, which allow visitors to embark on the "ship of dreams". The Exhibition has been very successful for visitors in Granada, Tarragona, Vigo, León, Coruña, Bilbao, Santander, Barcelona, Gijón and Burgos. The expo is currently in Coimbra (Portugal). Once it's stay in Alicante ends, a reconstruction of the Titanic's second-class lavatory will be raffled off among all those who visit it. This replica is the same as the one that the Titanic Foundation gave to former President Barack Obama, to install it in his new residence. The expo has been brought to Alicante by the Titanic Foundation, which was founded in 2006 with the main objective of managing and promoting the historical, maritime and human memory of the most mediatic shipwreck and the most legendary of the ships of universal history: the R.M.S. Titanic, which, almost a hundred years after its sinking, continues to be a legend. Although there are many associations around the "dream ship", the Titanic Foundation, based in Spain, is the only non-profit foundation dedicated to the protagonist of the human catastrophe that has contributed most to the update of the methods of maritime rescue and the safety of human life at sea. Likewise, the Titanic Foundation works to disseminate and promote the respect and defence of the environment of our coasts, seas and oceans. The expo is located at: Paseo Almirante Julio Guillén Tato, s/n, C.P. 03001, Alicante/Alacant, Alicante/Alacant in the Port area of the city. Tickets will be going on sale soon. Telephone: 965 92 20 18 / 965 92 23 06 More details from:www.fundaciontitanic.com/la-exposicion.html

From amateur to professional 'Wedding' photographer By Keith Nicol

Apart from winning the Lottery, coming from a wealthy background, being left an obscene amount of money in a will, marrying rich or getting some sort of insurance claim, if you have to work for a living, like I do, there is nothing to beat working at something you love: which in my case is photography. I come from the 'been there, done that, got the T-shirt' club, of being lucky enough to take photos all over the world, working in the cruise and travel business and having work published by the likes of GQ, New Musical Express, Road and Track, Tatler and dozens of magazines and newspapers. Being able to make a living at being a photographer is no easy task, but rewarding if you can make it work for you. With the advent of digital SLR cameras, the amateur field of photography has developed many new followers. For those of us that learnt our skills in 35mm film and getting films developed at the like's of Boots or one hour photo shops, today's DSLR instant image review and cheap cost of basic digital photography, has both encouraged and succeeded in making many amateur photos into professionals, or wannabe professionals...

Keith on Camera from yesteryear However, I use the word 'professional' carefully, as in many instances it only means that they now make their living from photography, and not that they are necessarily very good at it. Most snap-happy people take photos purely for the love of photography, but this skill does have the potential to form a satisfying career. My friends and family make fun of me for photographing my son's pups at every opportunity and I rarely miss the chance for a selfie. An article I read on freefeatures.com noted: "There are a lot of people out there who are in need of a good photographer to capture images of their daughter or son's wedding, a news event, even a celebrity photo shoot. It might seem like a dream job for any keen amateur photographer, yet it is a career that is in reach of those who are prepared to put the work in. For the transition of amateur photographer to professional, there are several tasks that you have to accomplish first. These apply if you are interested in agency work, freelance work or setting up your own studio. Like any new venture, marketing plays a huge role in the field of photography. Your photography skills need to be matched with a desire and competency to let people know about what you can do, why they need your skills and why they should hire you. You might need to impress an employer, a client or a bank manager, all of whom have the potential to help you launch your career.

Putting together an impressive portfolio or a sample album reflecting your personal style will be the best investment that you can make. Once you have the basis of your business venture, you need to effectively market your services in the most Getting wet appropriate publications and at exhibitions. Post as many ads about your photography business in as many places as you can." Much of what they say has real relevance in the real world, but since we live in Spain, the world of photography, the language, the style, marketing and promotions are all a little different: especially earnings. By choice I only photograph six or so weddings a year. But over the past thirty or more years, I've photographed and videotaped hundreds. But now I really only shoot weddings of friends, celebrity weddings, or if they are in special locations, around the world. Thus my mind and my style stays really fresh and it's a delight to shoot a wedding, rather than just another job... If you want to make a living as a professional photographer, in my humble opinion, become a wedding photographer. It pays well, and if you shoot a wedding every week in season, you will be set up for the rest of the year.

Making the bride laugh int number one: look at the photography in wedding magazines. Why? Because brides go through bridal magazines looking for a style or a special photograph, and they will often pick a photographer based upon if you can, or are willing to, recreate the photograph they have seen in a magazine, or a celebrity TV wedding. The groom usually just follows along.

The most difficult thing you may have to do is to find your first job. Brides to be, will want to see your portfolio, other weddings you have photographed etc, and since you may not have this to show, apart from stealing what you will off the internet, how will you sell yourself? Some aspiring photographers will offer their services for free to be a backup photographer for another professional. It's a great way to gain some experience. My tip would be to offer your services to a photographer in an area away from the place you are going to start your business, thus avoiding any future conflict of interests. I'm primarily a photojournalist: an action photographer, sports, entertainment, low light, and I specialise in the art of anticipation. My mantra is: 'If it moves; shoot it'... Thus Weddings are usually easy as they are quite static, and except for the ceremony, the majority of the photos are staged, and you have time to set up the photos, the lighting, and capture the photo you want. Old School photographers usually learnt their trade and bracketed each photo, probably shooting 10 to 12 rolls of 36 frames, during a wedding. That's about 400 photos, whereas, in today's digital age, one might shoot 2,000 photos plus; all previewed to make sure they are well lit and in focus, rather than hoping that everything will look great once developed. So, for budding wedding photographers, or if you've volunteered to shoot a friend's or family wedding, here's my basic 'cheat sheet'... Check out the internet for more details and look for your your own inspiration... Enjoy and have fun...

Will men ever embrace the spa experience? Spas have become as much part of a woman's life as Chablis and Chanel, even in these cash strapped times a facial or massage is a treat for us equivalent to our mothers going for a shampoo and set. Yet men - despite the Becks effect which encouraged them to embrace moisturiser and, yes, even comb their hair once in a while seem as doggedly against the spa as ever before. There are hundreds of reasons why your average lad avoids these places like the plague (unless dragged along by a girlfriend intent on be-robed romance): from the girls on the reception desk, who most men are convinced are giggling at them, to the downright fear that their naked flesh being touched by a woman or, heaven forbid, a man may cause 'erm' unwanted side-effects. Many men, perhaps more used to the footballers' favourite sports massage, compare your average pummelling to being tickled by a feather. Less enjoyment than buttock clenching embarrassment as the therapist works her way over your sensitive spots. And that's not even to mention the paper pants, too short robes and feminine choice of slippers which most spas hand out and most women now seem to embrace with the enthusiasm usually reserved for a new pair of Jimmy Choos.

Then there are the less obvious annoyances. The wishy washy new age music, the smell of lavender and rose and other girly aromas, the whispering and the spa restaurants which appear to offer very little in the way of burgers and chips. It's enough to make even the most in-touchwith-his-feminine-side male go running for the nearest spit and sawdust pub showing football and serving Stella. Yet in other countries, and indeed in other times, the male species embraced and still embrace a good rub down. Though this may be less a cultural phenomenon than the fact that there's nothing in the least sissy about being thrown about the room by a sweaty, twenty-five stone Turk until your bones seem to have all the hardiness of a Stretch Armstrong doll. Turkish Baths do exist in the UK but, more often than not, are accompanied by a slightly seedy atmosphere and the distinct feeling that you may not leave alive. However these are not the only option for a more manly spa experience. While most spas reserve a token two treatment space on their price list for the chaps, Elemis offer a wide range of relaxing and useful treatments for men while their day spas are simple in and out affairs, devoid of robes and all that sitting about with a cup of green tea. Even better is London's Gentlemen's Tonic, which has an old school vibe and, in addition to Reiki, Reflexology and massages, offers barbers shop favourites including the closest wet shave you're likely to find outside of Sweeney Todd's. Who said pampering was for girls?

Home and Garden Improvements That Will Benefit Local Wildlife

When it comes to changing the world, your own backyard is a great place to start. As you make home improvements, consider their potential to benefit local wildlife that travel in and around your property. Here are a few important steps you can take. Plant Native Species By planning native species exclusively in your garden and yard, you will be promoting a healthy local ecosystem while providing proper nourishment and a natural habitat for visiting wildlife, whether that be insects, birds or furry creatures. Because native plant species are meant to thrive in your local climate, they will require less maintenance, which means a beautiful yard with less stress. Prevent Bird Strikes You may not realise it, but your home poses a risk to birds. Window strikes are common among many species of migrating birds, and millions of wild birds are killed annually flying into windows. However, a simple home improvement project can make your home safer for birds. Birds can see certain light frequencies that humans can’t, so by applying UV decals and UV liquid to your home’s windows and sliding

glass doors, you can make windows visible to birds in a way that won’t obstruct your own view. “Protecting birds adds beauty to your garden, is good for the environment and most importantly, saves lives,” says Spencer Schock, founder of WindowAlert, a company that offers UV decals and UV Liquid. The UV decals and liquid from WindowAlert have been proven to effectively alter the flight path of birds to prevent window strikes. The coating will look like etched glass to the human eye, but be very visible to a bird. As UV reflectivity may fade over time, it’s important to replace the decals and liquid every four months. Application techniques can be found by visiting WindowAlert.com. Build a Bird house Add beauty to your yard with a wooden bird house. Find a design you love or get creative and craft your own, using your own home’s architecture for inspiration. A strategically placed bird house -- either within three feet of a window or over 30 feet away -- will help avoid bird strikes. Be a good neighbour -- not just to the other humans. Make improvements to your home that will help protect both local and migratory wildlife. (From StatePoint)

Høysesong for ferske jordbær.

Spanish strawberries a world success Spanish strawberry growers export a staggering 285,000 tons of strawberries annually; making Spain the world's largest strawberry exporter. A total of 90 percent of Spanish strawberries are grown in Andalucia, where new cultivation methods and world-leading agricultural expertise have helped to create what has become an international phenomena. Strawberries of course, taste good as they are, but also fit in many sweet and savoury dishes. Try a strawberry smoothie. Or maybe you want to try strawberries with Spanish sherry vinegar, a tasty twist on the Italian classic. Strawberries and chocolate, a classic combination. For the farmer, hardly any berry is closer to the summer sun than strawberries. Mature strawberries signal the very beginning of summer in ls the party is over. Here in Spain, the strawberry season is much longer and it is constantly expanding. Right now we are at the start of the high season that begins in February and lasts until May. Huelva - Spain and Europe's strawberry growers It is in southwestern Spain that we find most of the country's cultivation of strawberries. Andalucia produces as much as 90 percent of the crop, and Huelva alone accounts for about 85 percent of that. In Huelva, 7,000 hectares are used for strawberry cultivation. This is not the case without a joint effort. In Andalucia we find farms that cooperate on cultivation, development of new plant varieties and cultivation methods and exports. Strawberry cultivation is large-scale production and has yielded results on sales figures: Spain's exports have increased by about 18 percent annually in recent years until last year, when weather conditions did not play well with the strawberry farmers. The greenhouses in Huelva abound with mature strawberries Most of the Spanish strawberry exports stay in Europe. The largest importers are Germany with approximately 107,000 tonnes per year and France purchasing about 56,000 tonnes each year. The UK, Italy, Portugal, Austria and Switzerland come in the next places, according to figures from

Spanish export authorities. However, Spanish strawberry growers are also gaining access to more remote areas of the world. The cooperatives are inventive when it comes to increasing the strawberry crops. One of the largest, Fresรณn de Palos, which consists of approx. 150 local Huelva farmers, is rearing small plants in the north where the summer season is relatively cool. The small plants grow in greenhouses in CastileLeon all summer, and then dug up in October-November. The plants are washed and sent south to Huelva where they are planted again and enjoy a mild winter. Strawberries can of course be enjoyed as they are, but you do well to rinse them just before serving. Most of us have a favourite dish, whether it is strawberry with ice cream, strawberry with chocolate sauce, or strawberry as a feature of fruit salad. But strawberries actually taste very good in a green salad: why not try strawberries instead of tomatoes. Strawberry Smoothie Why not try a Strawberry Smoothie: the recipe is enough for three glasses Take a blender or bar mixer: Place Two peeled, well-ripened bananas, 6-7 tablespoons of Greek or other natural yogurt; 4-5 large or 8-10 medium sized strawberries; 2-3 tablespoons of whole milk, almond milk or similar. Blend until you have a smooth, slightly thick drink. High season for fresh strawberries. If you like to be the adventurous in the kitchen, we can recommend a Spanish twist on an Italian classic. The Italians often eat their strawberries with balsamic vinegar. It doesn't have anything to to do with ordinary household vinegar.. Spain has its own "luxury vinegar", made of sherry. How to prepare strawberries with sherry vinegar: Cut 1/4 kilogram or so of strawberries into thick slices or boats. Mix the berries with approx. 75 g of sugar and a few tablespoons of sherry vinegar. (The amount of vinegar will vary somewhat with what brand you use). Let it stand for 15 minutes to a couple of hours in the refrigerator. Lovely with ice cream, almond cakes and much more. Boost Health With These Breakfast Tips Looking to make some changes to your nutrition? Start by examining what is often referred to as the most important meal of the day; breakfast. Here are some fast facts about breakfast from Kelly Springer, MS, RD, CDN, and president of Kelly’s Choice, a collective of registered dieticians, nutritionists and educators that offers customised nutrition coaching programs for schools, workplaces, medical facilities, athletes and individuals. • Don’t Skip It: Breakfast is not only essential to weight maintenance, it can help ensure you avoid nutritional deficiencies, so don’t avoid it. “Think about bonfires. If you don’t add wood to the flames, the fire will go out. Metabolism works the same way. If you don’t add food as fuel to your body, your metabolism will slow down,” says Springer. “To maintain a healthy diet, you need to eat regularly scheduled meals. Breakfast is particularly important because your metabolism slows during a night of sleep.” Skipping breakfast has also been proven to be linked to nutrient deficiencies, points out Springer. “Breakfast provides essential nutrients that can’t be made up for later in the day,” says. “A good breakfast will provide protein, b vitamins, fibre, calcium and iron.” • Include Protein: Protein helps to maintain blood sugar levels, keeps you fuller longer and provides the building blocks for skin, hair, nails and muscle. But because protein can’t be stored as protein in the body, it needs to be consumed throughout the day.

“Be sure your first meal includes protein. You don’t have to search hard to do so. Some of your favourite breakfast items are already a great source,” says Springer. Did you know that a bagel at Einstein Bros. Bagels has between 9 and 17 grams of protein? This is more than or as much protein as one large egg, three slices of turkey, one cup of 2 percent milk or two tablespoons of creamy peanut butter. • Include Carbohydrates: Many new diets encourage you to skip carbohydrates, but carbs are the number one source of energy for the body and brain food to boot. Carbohydrates convert to glucose in the body -- and our brain, one of the most demanding organs in the body, cannot function without glucose. • Streamline: Habits are most successfully formed when they are easy to adopt. To that end, consider streamlining your breakfast by seeking out one location for your morning cup of joe as well as your protein-rich, meal, such as Einstein Bros. Bagels, which offers a full breakfast menu. A nutritious day all starts with a balanced breakfast. To keep your body and metabolism fuelled, give your breakfasts a makeover. (StatePoint)

How to Make Your Empty Nest an Empowering New Chapter Suddenly, the kids are all grown up and ready to flee the nest. It’s the start of a new chapter -- for them, and for mom and dad, too. While this sudden change in family dynamic is bound to bring a mix of bittersweet emotions, there are plenty of ways to embrace the shift. An empty nest certainly doesn’t mean an empty life. Raising a family reaps many rewards and any parent knows that family time revolves around the children’s wants and needs well into their teenage years. While in the thick of it, the prospect of a quiet, relaxing weekend with no parental responsibilities and the very concept of self-care can seem farfetched. But now with the kids leaving home, it’s time to make the most of your new foot-loose and fancy-free lifestyle. Make More “Me Time” Now that you have more time to do things that bring you joy, it’s time rediscover who you are -- whether that’s through traveling the world, learning a new skill or language, taking a yoga class, volunteering or simply doing more of what makes you feel good. The newfound time in your day is an opportunity to discover new hobbies and build a social life that is entirely your own. Stay Connected Just because the kids have left home doesn’t mean you can’t stay connected. In fact, you may find yourself on the other end of the phone giving dating advice or having more meaningful life chats than ever before. Family group text threads can replace dinner table conversations, so do make sure you stay up-to-date with technology to keep the entire family connected.

Choose a phone plan that lets you talk, video chat or text with your kids as much as you want, when you want, such as T-Mobile ONE Unlimited 55+, which gives you two lines for just $35 per line with no surprise fees or taxes. A super affordable option designed just for customers 55 and older, it includes unlimited talk, text and data, in-flight texting, one hour of Gogo Wi-Fi on domestic flights, and texting and data when you travel abroad in 210 destinations. And what’s more, all the money you save on your phone plan can go straight into the self-care fund or to finance your next “adults only” fancy vacation. Win-win. Find a Furry Friend If you’re an animal lover, adopt a new pet, train a friend’s dog, pet-sit, or become a foster petparent. This time, you won’t be getting a pet just for the kids. Animals have a magical ability to lift the spirit and fill the void left from caring for your little ones for so many years. Becoming an empty nester is surprisingly empowering, and can be a period of positive growth for you. Install new routines and experiences in your life, stay connected to your kids, and the rest will surely follow. (StatePoint)

Interview with Lulu, Let It Shine Let It Shine is a British reality television music competition to find young men to star in The Band, a new stage musical featuring the songs of Take That. It aired in January and February 2017 on BBC One. The show was presented by Graham Norton and Mel Giedroyc, with Gary Barlow, Dannii Minogue and Martin Kemp serving as judges throughout the series. Amber Riley was the guest judge for the auditions, followed by Lulu for the group round. Ricki Lake was the guest judge for the first live show, Ashley Roberts for the semi-final and Peter Kay for the final. The show was won by the band Five to Five who won the part as the band in the new musical The Band, which began touring in September 2017. Gary Barlow and the BBC have plans for a second series but this did not happen in 2018 as Gary thought it was too soon to launch a second season. A BBC spokesperson has also confirmed that Let It Shine would not be returning next year, but that “the door is definitely open” to the possibility of another series in the future. Gary Barlow added: “We had a fantastic time making Let It Shine and the response has been absolutely amazing. The musical itself has broken records for the fastest selling theatre tour in UK history, which is incredible! I want to make sure we give any future series the focus and excitement Let It Shine Series 1 had, and I look forward to making plans for the future with the BBC team.” The script follows the journey of five teenage girls, the women they become and the boyband they follow for 25 years.

We caught up with British superstar Lulu to find out more about her experience on the show. TF: You're were a guest judging during the collaboration stage of the competition, what did you think about the show when you were asked to join? Lulu: To be honest I had no idea what it was going to be like. Obviously it's a talent show but it's like nothing we've seen before. When people see what Gary and everyone have created, they are going to be surprised. There are a lot of elements to the show, there's a lot going on, it's a huge machine, it'll surprise people in a very good way. TF: You've known Gary a long time, what do you think about him and what he's trying to achieve with this show? Lulu: I've always been a big fan of Gary, he's a real talent. I think this whole show has a touch of something different. It sounded, at the start, something that was going to be quite generic. I thought they would be looking for Take That look-a-likes, sound-a-likes, all of that. But then I came on set and wow, there's a lot of detail on this show that is pretty amazing. TF: Gary was quite mysterious about the stage show that came after this. Did he tell you anything? Lulu: I knew everything! Gary told me, he sat me down and explained it. I had the same thoughts that I'm sure everyone out there will be thinking. But I'm telling you now, whatever you're thinking, it's not what you think it'll be. It's nothing like I thought it would be.

TF: You weren't involved in the audition process for Let It Shine, so what did you think of the standard of the contestants? Lulu: I was actually very surprised, I wasn't expecting them to be as good as they are. It's not impossible, but it's hard to eliminate some of the boys because they all have something about them. You want the full package from everybody. I'm sorry but that's what you have to have these days, you can't just be a singer or just a dancer or just cute. You have to have the full package because there is so much competition out there. TF: Were you worried that there would be joke acts like there are on other shows? Lulu: There are absolutely no jokes on this show. No way. That's been done. What I like about this show is that they aren't doing things that have been done before. The only thing that's similar is that they are giving kids a platform, but with this show it's all boys, which is different. I'm both impressed and surprised, it's not what I expected. It's exciting. TF: This show is offering the winners a job and not just fame, are you pleased about that? Lulu: I think it's not just good, it's something that's needed right now. I think that's a big element and a change to this type of show that's extremely positive. It's about time these kids were working towards a job. There's a very good atmosphere on set. There's a real feeling of camaraderie because they feel like they are on to something special.

TF: Do you think you would have had the career you've had if you were starting our now? Lulu: It's impossible to say. I never wanted to be famous; I didn't do what I did to be famous. I think that separates the chaff from the wheat. It's a tough business to be in, especially when you get knocks, so the easiest thing would be to probably say, "Ah, stuff it". But the ones who aren't in it for the fame won't do that, they keep going, regardless of the knock-backs. There's a hunger there. TF: So where does your fire and determination come from? Lulu: I don't know, maybe I was born with it. I think it comes a lot from my background; I come from a working class background. I told my niece the other day that when I was growing up we didn't have a bathroom, we didn't have central heating. She was like, "What?!" She couldn't believe that we would have a bath in front of the fire and would only do that once a week. She couldn't believe it and said, "You were really poor", and I said, "How dare you!" I never thought of myself as poor but I come from a very strong work ethic. I've come from a place where you don't get things handed to you, you have to work for it. Not to sound down about it, but with my family, there was a lot of stuff going on that was trying, and I'm being polite. I had a lot of pain and difficulty, but that's made me, it's the fibre of who I am. I'm a fighter and that's got something to do with it. I'm like, "Don't tell me I can't do something!" It's a fighting attitude. Now, as I've got older, I don't give in easily, sometimes to a fault.

TF:

So there's no chance of you retiring then?

Lulu: Are you kidding me? I'm not going to stop while I can still do it. I'm going to keep going until I can't do it anymore. It's like a love affair. I love what I do! I still tour, I did two sell out tours this last year, one here and one in Australia. I'm writing with my brother, I'm working with some young people, I live for this. It's what I love. You have to, it's too difficult otherwise. TF: What's your advice to the boys on the show for dealing with the fame that comes with this business? Lulu: Don't take yourself too seriously. That will come from Gary. That's one of the things Take That are known for, they aren't full of themselves. They have a lot of humility and gratitude; they've had their ups and downs. You've also got to shine and be the best that you can be so that allows everyone around you to be great. TF: How have you maintained your voice and looked after yourself over such a long career? Lulu: You have to be so careful with your health, especially in terms of what you eat and drink. If I'm on tour I don't talk until after 12, so from 12 to 12 I don't speak, not if you want to be able to sing every night. You have to care of yourself, it's a job, and if you want to do your job you have to be fit for it. TF: Gary has talked about team spirit and how it's been lost slightly with kids today, do you agree? Lulu: It's interesting. I'm all about working as a team; when I'm performing I always want my band up front with me. I've always wanted to be a part of a group so I bring them forward and include them. Collaborating is a great skill, you learn from one another. So Gary's point about team spirit is a very good one. How are you going to rise if you're on your own? You're only as weak as your weakest link, if you think it's all about you, forget it. In today's society you need a village to support you when you're an artist. It's not a one man job, you need musicians, lighting, sound men, the works

David Dimbleby to guest present Have I Got News For You for the first time The first episode of the brand new series of Have I Got News For You (airing on BBC One at 9pm on Friday 5 April 2019) will see journalist and broadcaster David Dimbleby make his HIGNFY guest presenting debut, in what will also be his first presenting role on the BBC since retiring from his role as chair of Question Time. Joining Dimbleby and regular team captains Paul Merton and Ian Hislop as the opening episode’s guest panelists will be journalist and documentary filmmaker Stacey Dooley and comedian Henning Wehn. On guest presenting the programme for the first time, Dimbleby says: “It is an intriguing invitation. It will be quite a challenge to keep the show on the road but whatever happens it will be fun.” The new series (nine episodes) will air weekly on Friday nights from 5 April at 9pm. The extended version of the programme, Have I Got A Bit More News For You, will air on Mondays on BBC One, from 8 April. Have I Got News For You is produced by Hat Trick Productions for BBC One. The Series Producer is Jo Bunting, the Producer is Mike Rayment, the Executive Producer is Richard Wilson and the Executive Producer for the BBC is Pinki Chambers.

The Greatest Show: Hugh Jackman’s Musical Extravaganza Breaks Records as Video Category Grows by 10% in 2018 Figures released last month by the British Association for Screen Entertainment (BASE) and based on data from the Official Charts Company and Futuresource Consulting, show that the home entertainment market grew by 10 per cent in 2018, bringing the total value of the category to £2.34bn. Taking centre stage as the best-selling title of the year, the juggernaut that is The Greatest Showman has sold in excess of 2.68 million copies, more than doubling the sales of the nearest contender on the combined chart and with 72 per cent of those sales coming from physical formats. Reflecting the public’s excitement for the home entertainment release, the film took the number one spot in the Official Charts Company’s inaugural Official Film Chart, the world’s first weekly chart to combine physical and digital film sales. Having consistently delighted audiences since its digital release at the end of April, the circus spectacular has yet to drop lower than fifth place in its 36-week spell in the combined chart.

4 Simple Hacks to Beat Seasonal Allergies Allergies are the sixth leading cause of chronic illness in the U.S. and more than 50 million Americans suffer from them each year, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. When it comes to spring allergies, you don’t need to anticipate the season with dread. There are steps you can take to proactively dodge allergens and mitigate debilitating symptoms, according to the experts at AccuWeather. Change Your Routine Are you a morning bather? Experts say that if you suffer from outdoor allergies, you would be wise to switch to evening showers. This will rid your hair and skin of pollen, so you don’t bring it to bed with you. No matter what time of day you shampoo and scrub, you’ll want to wash your linens in hot water, to remove as much pollen as possible. Stay in-the-Know From dry winds blowing tree pollen into the air, to wet, rainy days causing dust mites and mould to thrive, weather has a huge impact on the spread of allergens and, subsequently, the way you feel, say experts. “Spring allergies are driven by trees and grass pollen, and different people will have their own reactions. If you do suffer from spring allergens, a cold front passing through can bring some relief,” says Alan Reppert, AccuWeather senior meteorologist. “But even when the weather seems quiet, allergens can be present and contribute to illness. For example, when rain begins and washes pollen out of the air, mould spores can climb and cause allergy problems.”

Get relevant information about weather and allergies in the palm of your hand so you can avoid the worst of it, or make necessary preparations when you can’t. One useful tool is AccuWeather’s daily allergy index, which is available on AccuWeather.com and on the free AccuWeather app for iOS and Android. Stay inthe-know by frequently checking the app, which is also a good source of other weather-related tips, educational resources and information. Protect Indoor Air Fresh air may sound appealing, but opening your car and home’s windows is a fast-track to a high pollen count indoors. For a breeze, stick to air conditioning, as fans can kick up dust and pollen into the air. Consider Your Wardrobe For those times when you must be out and about on high-pollen count days, wear a wide-brimmed hat and sunglasses to protect yourself. A scarf or mask over your mouth and nose can be useful when symptoms are severe. When you get home, be sure to remove outerwear, including shoes, in your mud room or foyer so you don’t track allergens throughout the house, particularly in areas where you sleep and spend the most time. You can make smart decisions about your wardrobe as well as the best time to venture outdoors by consulting digital apps like AccuWeather before leaving the house. This spring, don’t let sniffles, sneezing and wheezing get the best of you. For a more comfortable season, check the weather often and take proper precautions. (From StatePoint)

CBD-related products are changing the beauty industry (BPT) - Short for cannabidiol, CBD is grabbing headlines every day. Long known to be a beneficial ingredient for health and wellness, now it's coming to the beauty industry. Why is it grabbing headlines? Because of its anti-inflammatory, soothing and anti-ageing properties, which make the oil an ideal solution to transform your beauty routine, from hair products to lotions to facial oils. If you're thinking, "Wait, cannabis? That's marijuana, right?" Wrong. Though it is found in cannabis, it is legal, it won't get you high and you will pass your drug test with flying colours. That's because it does not contain THC, the ingredient in cannabis that produces the "high" effect. Still confused? Kevin Wachs, CEO and co-founder of Earthly Body, offers some of the beauty areas where this oil is having the biggest impact. Super skin care We already know that inflammation can spell serious skin woes, but what you might not know is that CBD's anti-inflammatory properties can do wonders to help soothe lowlevel irritation. The oil, such as CBD Daily's Serum, moisturises and soothes skin thanks to the high levels of Omega 3, 6 and 9 fatty acids it contains. These acids deliver important nutrients to the skin while protecting against environmental and other daily stressors. Additionally, the oil works to soothe sore muscles and aches.

Happy hair Earthly Body's Emera CBD Haircare line is the first professional haircare line infused with CBD. This, along with other oils, is loaded with essential fatty acids so it helps to keep hair well hydrated. It also helps to regulate hair loss and control dry hair and scalp conditions. In doing so, it encourages hair growth and promotes overall healthy hair. "CBD promotes healthy hair growth and good scalp health and protects your hair from daily environmental stresses because it is antioxidant rich," Wachs said. "It also strengthens your hair and reduces breakage thanks to the high levels of amino acids and offers colour protection thanks to tyrosine, too." In addition, due to its anti-inflammatory properties, it works to calm and nourish beneath the surface by deeply penetrating and conditioning in conjunction with a blend of ingredients like lemon grass, chamomile and Japanese matcha green tea. The new look of beauty products The beauty industry is constantly changing, and as new products and trends enter the market, CBD-related solutions are poised to dominate.
