Taiwan Season 2021 at Edinburgh Festival Fringe Award-winning annual Fringe showcase reinvented – once again – as an online programme from August 6 until 29, 2021 Launched in 2014, Taiwan Season returns to Edinburgh Festival Fringe for an eighth consecutive year, responding to the second year of COVID-19 challenges by proudly presenting Taiwan Season Online Performances & Symposium 2021. Working in partnership with the key Fringe venue Summerhall, and the Fringe itself via their new, on-demand platform Fringe Player, this caringly curated online programme consists of four distinctly different, filmed dance-theatre productions. Taiwan Season Online Performances 2021: ‘A Glimpse of Taiwan’ (August 6-29) features three specially-edited films and one recorded streaming of a quartet of outstanding Taiwanese dance-theatre productions. Each is available to view on Fringe Player (from £5-£8 per show) from August 6 until the end of the Festival. Additionally, there are watch parties for the four shows at 2pm on both August 12 (ai~sa sa and The Back of Beyond) and August 19 (FIGHTERS and Touchdown). This is a chance to get to know the artists and see extracts from their work. Audience members who have purchased tickets for shows will be invited to attend these events by the host venue, Summerhall.

About the four productions: Taiwan Season: ai~sa sa
This ebullient new performance by Tjimur Dance Theatre, Taiwan’s first professional company dedicated to the culture of the Paiwan people, brims with love and laughter. Emotive yet essentially lighthearted and domestic, it puts a fresh, universally contemporary spin on indigenous tribal customs.
Taiwan Season: Touchdown
Hao Cheng’s mathematical background gives him a unique perspective on abstract ideas and flesh-and-blood performance. His dynamic, highly personal and proudly low-tech solo for Incandescence Dance merges popular science and the poetry of motion.
Taiwan Season: The Back of Beyond
Tai Gu Tales Dance Theatre’s extraordinary dancers go on an arresting physical and spiritual journey merging Eastern cultural traditions and contemporary Western practices. It’s a charged theatrical dreamritual charting the cycle of life from birth to death and rebirth. Expect powerful imagery, emotional sensitivity, exceptional craft.
Taiwan Season: FIGHTERS
Drawn from one of the keystones of classical Chinese literature, this buoyant production by Nai-Hsuan Yang’s company Les Petites Choses Production is fierce fun. Five godly characters spring to life in an engaging fusion of hip hop and contemporary dance enhanced by a folk-techno soundtrack. [Please note: all four productions in Taiwan Season Online Performances 2021 are available for both live touring and online festivals. ]
Taiwan Season 2021 warmly invites audiences to experience a range of ideas, emotions and flavours in a hand-picked sampling of some the most stimulating contemporary performances from Taiwan. Taiwan Season 2021 is produced and managed collaboratively by Zhong He Creative International Co., Ltd., Taiwan and Step Out Arts, UK and funded by Ministry of Culture, Taiwan.

This ebullient new performance by Tjimur Dance Theatre, Taiwan's first professional company dedicated to the culture of the Paiwan people, brims with love and laughter. The title is a multi-purpose colloquial interjection that can translate as 'Get over yourself!' There's certainly nothing pretentious about choreographer Baru Madiljin’s engaging show. The focus is on the shifting dynamic among four performers whose warm and sometimes bit tersweet interac tions enc ompas s many moods and moment s. Emotive yet essentially light-hearted and domestic, it puts a lively and universally contemporary spin on indigenous tribal customs. Incandescence Dance Online and on demand 06 – 29 Aug: £5 18 mins / 8+ Hao Cheng’s mathematical background gives him a unique perspective on abstract ideas and flesh-and-blood performance. His dynamic, highly personal and proudly low-tech solo for Incandescence Dance merges popular science and the poetry of motion. Featuring a blackboard-like surface and chalk as a means of charting Cheng’s ceaselessly nimble, fullyfelt movement, his dance gradually transforms into a visual art installation. This original and elegantly-conceived show lends quantum physics and the uncertainty principle fresh meaning and a human face. The Back Tai Gu Tales Dance Theatre Online and on demand 06 – 29 Aug: £8 45 mins / 5+ Tai Gu Tales Dance Theatre takes five extraordinarily versatile dancers on an arresting physical and spiritual journey. Founded in 1987 by choreographer Hsiu-wei Lin (former principal dancer with the acclaimed Cloud Gate), the company’s rich yet rigorous aesthetic merges Eastern cultural traditions and contemporary Western practices. The timehonoured concepts at the heart of this production are shaped by a personal concern for how human beings co-exist with each other and their environment. Rooted in such entwined, elemental forces as light/dark and love/hate, this is dance as a charged theatrical dream-ritual charting the cycle of life from birth to death and rebirth. Expect powerful imagery, emotional sensitivity and exceptional craft. This stylishly buoyant show by Nai-Hsuan Yang's Les Petites Choses Production is fierce fun for all ages. Drawn from ‘The Romance of Three Kingdoms,’ one of the most popular works of classical Chinese literature, five godly characters spring vividly to life from page to stage. The wonderfully game cast's energising fusion of hip hop and contemporary dance is further enlivened by a folk-techno soundtrack. The film shows how dancers deal with their bodies and minds during an extraordinary moment in global society – a time when we may well need a new breed of heroes.
