Chairman’s Message I am dedicating this concert to the memory of our friend Roderick Lakin MBE, Director of Arts at the Royal Over-Seas League, who died in a tragic accident while he was working in Edinburgh during the Festival this year. Thanks to Roderick, we established a prize in the ROSL’s Annual Music Competition in 1996; over the years this has gone to some exceptional young Australian artists, and Roderick offered us inestimable support and encouragement.

We were so touched that our Patron Peggy Haim, who died in January, left us a small bequest – this will importantly provide a scholarship for a young dancer at the English National Ballet School. This year it will be one of two awards that form The Leanne Benjamin Awards. The other scholarship at The Royal Ballet School has been generously donated by Tait Patron, John Frost AM. Trustee Shirley Barr has just left to make her home with family in Australia; Shirley was with us since the very beginning. With a wealth of experience in the charity arts sector, she was our rock and we will miss her enormously.

We are proud to be in the Amaryllis Fleming Hall tonight, celebrating our association with the Royal College of Music through our Tait Scholar award; the second Scholar, violinist Alexandra Isted, is playing for us tonight.

Once again our gratitude to the Commonwealth Bank for their continued support of this year’s Winter Prom. They have been such an enthusiastic partner to us in our mission to showcase and support our talented Australian performing artists here in the UK.

Isla, his daughter, has not a bad bone in her body – she is one of the most supportive, generous-minded and all-inclusive people I know and has many of her father’s gifts and interests. The Trust she has founded has helped an impressive number of young Australian performers over the years.

While the individual financial grants, though numerous each year, may not be huge, support from the Tait, with its remarkable volunteers and committee members, is support for the rest of the applicants’ performing lives. Isla and her merry band take such personal interest in their awardees, and such pride in the ongoing success of young Australians, that all sorts of unexpected connections are established for them, and opportunities offered, which come as the natural result of genuine and enthusiastic spreading the word about new names. Programme Notes César Franck (1822 – 1890) Violin Sonata Alexandra Isted, violin Chad Vindin, piano

4th movement, A major

César Franck's Sonata in A Major, a classic in the violin and piano sonata repertoire, is filled with beauty, excitement, imagination, poignancy, and drama. While other important works of Franck have fallen in and out of fashion in the years since his death, the Sonata in A has remained popular for performers and audiences alike. Hoping he would be a concert pianist, his father enrolled him in the Conservatoire of Liege in 1830.

The sense of peace and attainment gives the fourth and last movement of Franck’s Sonata the perfect resolution to the earlier turmoil and fantasyfilled self-reflection of the previous three movements. The flowing melody of crotchets is immediately stated at the start of the movement by the piano, which the violin follows in a canon. The two instruments take turns in initiating the canon throughout. The sonata concludes with energetic elegance.

"they, who fly with wings of glass stems from an ongoing exploration into the importance of extra-musical titles. With the invention of this particular title, I aimed to paint a striking image that was suggestive of freedom and beauty but also fragility and mortality. I imagined a gentle, wild beast lifting gracefully off the floor, hovering in the air for five minutes, then landing once more in its starting position. To me, they, who fly with wings of glass is a musical depiction of this image" Peter Wilson, composer. London October, 2015

E lucevan le stelle ("And the stars were shining") is a romanza from the third act of Giacomo Puccini's opera Tosca, composed in 1900 to an Italian libretto by Luigi Illica and Giuseppe Giacosa. It is sung by Mario Cavaradossi (tenor), a painter in love with the singer Tosca, while he waits for his execution on the roof of Castel Sant'Angelo. Written in the key B minor, it is one of the most famous opera arias for the Tenor voice.

Marietta’s Lied, Act 1 Die tote Stadt

When the opera opens, Paul, a younger middle-class man whose young wife, Marie, has recently died, cannot come to terms with the sad reality of her death. He keeps a "Temple of Memories" in her honour, including paintings, photographs and a lock of her hair. When his friend Frank pays him a visit at his house and urges him to honour Marie by moving on with his life, Paul flies into a rant, and insists that Marie "still lives." He tells Frank that he has met a woman on the streets of Bruges who exactly resembles Marie (Paul thinks that it actually is Marie) and invited her back to his home.

Soon, the woman, Marietta, a young and beautiful dancer, appears for her rendezvous with Paul. They talk, she is put off by his odd behaviour, but persists in trying to interest him in her charms—she sings (Lute Song, "Glück das mir verblieb") and dances seductively, but eventually gets bored and leaves. Paul meanwhile is driven to a state of extreme anxiety.

Torn between his loyalty to Marie and his interest in Marietta he collapses into a chair and begins to hallucinate. He sees Marie's ghost step out of her portrait and urge him not to forget her, but then the vision of Marie changes and tells Paul to go and move on with his life.

Love Unspoken, Duet, Act 3 The Merry Widow

The Merry Widow (Die lustige Witwe) is an operetta by the AustroHungarian composer Franz Lehár. The librettists, Viktor Léon and Leo Stein, based the story – concerning a rich widow, and her countrymen's attempt to keep her money in the principality by finding her the right husband – on an 1861 comedy play, L'attaché d'ambassade (The Embassy Attaché) by Henri Meilhac.

The third act is set at a theme party in Hanna's ballroom, which she has decorated as Maxim's, complete with Maxim's grisettes (can-can dancers).

Valencienne entertains the guests . When Danilo arrives, having found the real Maxim's empty, he tells Hanna to give up Camille for the sake of the country. Much to Danilo's delight, Hanna tells him that she was never engaged to Camille, but that she was protecting the reputation of a married woman. Danilo is ready to declare his love for Hanna, and is on the point of doing so when he remembers her money, and stops himself.

Danilo confesses his love for her and asks Hanna to marry him, and Hanna triumphantly points out that she will lose her fortune only because it will become the property of her husband.

The twenty-one Nocturnes of Frédéric Chopin (of which only twenty were designated as such by the composer, the well-known Nocturne in C sharp minor of 1830 having been assigned the title Nocturne only upon publication in 1875) span virtually his entire creative career. Chopin inherited the form from Irish composer John Field; Field's influence is indeed palpable throughout Chopin's earliest published entries in the genre. The Three Nocturnes, Op.9 (dedicated to the famous pianist Mme. Camille Pleyel, with whom several noted musicians of the day, including Berlioz and Liszt, fell in love) still betray their stylistic debt to Field, although even at this early stage in his development Chopin's melancholic chromaticism and sinewy melodies stand in stark contrast to the Irish composer's far simpler pieces.

The Nocturne in E-flat major, Op.9, No.2 is very possibly the most famous work ever penned by Chopin…a work of great charm. Op.9, No.2 is one of the briefest of the Nocturnes. There is little space for sloppy sentimentality, even within the striking little cadenza that concludes the work.

Piers Lane, piano London-based Australian pianist Piers Lane is one of the most inquisitive and engaging live performers of his generation. In great demand as soloist and collaborative artist, recent highlights include a performance of Busoni’s mighty piano concerto at Carnegie Hall, premieres of Carl Vine’s second Piano Concerto, written for him, with the Sydney Symphony and the London Philharmonic, and several soldout solo recitals at Wigmore Hall.

Five times soloist at the Proms, his concerto repertoire exceeds ninety-five works and has led to engagements with many of the world’s great orchestras and conductors. Highlights of the past season included performing with the London Philharmonic Orchestra and Andrew Manze, and a return to the Seoul Spring Festival of Chamber Music. He also gave over thirty performances in Australia, and performed throughout the UK, and in France and Belgium. Forthcoming highlights include performances at the Wimbledon Festival, at Carnegie Hall with the newly formed Orchestra Now, and an extensive recital tour of Australia.

Piers has a discography of over 50 CDs, his most recent being a Chandos release of Schubert chamber music with his regular recital partner, Tasmin Little. Hyperion released his most recent solo recording, “Piers Lane goes to Town” and the six works for piano and orchestra by Malcolm Williamson, while ABC Classics released two Mozart Concertos.

Piers is Artistic Director of the Australian Festival of Chamber Music, and has recently been named Artistic Director of the 2016 Sydney International Piano Competition of Australia. In the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Honours, he was made an Officer in the Order of Australia for services to music.

Tait Awardee Biographies Alexandra Isted, violin Alexandra studied with Winthrop Professor Paul Wright at the University of Western Australia where she graduated from a Bachelor of Arts with First Class Honours in Music Performance.

In the same year she was awarded the UWA Graduates Convocation Award for the highest marks in the music faculty.

A passionate orchestral musician, Alexandra has been on a full-time tutti contract with the West Australian Symphony Orchestra since the beginning of 2014 and has also played in the Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra, Melbourne Symphony Orchestra and most recently the Australian World Orchestra. Alexandra has been on orchestral tours of Europe, China, Singapore and Hong Kong. She is extremely grateful to be the Tait Scholar of the Tait Memorial Trust. A scholarship which supports her studies at the Royal College of Music where she recently began her Masters in Performance.

Tabatha McFadyen, soprano Tabatha was trained at the Queensland Conservatorium and the Universität Mozarteum in Salzburg. She has been successful in a number of competitions, in 2014 winning the Antonin Dvorak International Singing Competition in the Czech Republic & the Mietta Song Competition, and in 2015 winning the Opera & Arts Support Group Scholarship, and the Richard Bonynge Prize and the Tait Memorial Trust Prize as part of the Joan Sutherland & Richard Bonynge Bel Canto Award. Her operatic roles have included Musetta, La BohÊme; Susanna & La Contessa Le Nozze di Figaro; Suor Genovieffa, Suor Angelica and Prilepa, Pique Dame with the Sydney Symphony Orchestra, under the baton of Maestro Vladimir Ashkenazy. Tabatha has also performed with the Queensland Symphony Orchestra and the Australian Opera & Ballet Orchestra.

Matthew Reardon, tenor Matthew Reardon is the 2015 recipient of the Australian International Opera Award, allowing him to study at the Wales International Academy of Voice with Dennis O’Neill. He is also a graduate from the Dame Nellie Melba Opera Trust and Western Australia Academy of Performing Arts (WAAPA).

Matthew made his solo operatic debut in Pecan Summer, the first Indigenous opera by Yorta Yorta soprano Deborah Cheetham. And was also a member of West Australian Opera and Opera Australia Chorus.

Matthew was a finalist in the 2015 McDonalds Aria Competition and finalist in the 2014 Richard Bonynge and Dame Joan Sutherland Bel Canto award. Matthew’s most recent opera performances include a regional tour of Australia as Ferrando in Cosi fan tutte and Rodolfo in La Bohème.

Chad Vindin, piano Chad Vindin performs extensively throughout the UK as an accompanist and chamber musician. Winner of the accompanist prize at the Maureen Lehane Vocal Competition in 2013, the Ludmilla Andrew Russian Song Accompanist Prize at the Royal Academy of Music and 2014, and the Royal Overseas League/Tait Memorial Trust Award earlier this year, Chad studied at the Royal Academy of Music with Michael Dussek and Malcolm Martineau. After graduating he was awarded the Lord & Lady Lurgan Junior Fellow in Accompaniment at the Royal College of Music, a position which he is enjoying now for a second year. He is a founding member of the Sydney Chamber Opera Company and performed with OperaUpClose in their Olivier Award-winning production of La Bohème.

Chad is generously supported by the Tait Memorial Trust, and is grateful to have received further support from the Thornton Foundation, Ian Potter Cultural Trust, Leverhulme Trust and the Reizenstein scholarship.

Peter Wilson, composer Peter Wilson is a composer/dancer currently studying composition at the Royal College of Music, where he is a Peter and Sheila Bennett Scholar. Since graduating from The Australian Ballet School in 2010, Peter has worked as a dancer and choreographer, developing works with companies ‘Phillip Adams BalletLab,’ ‘UntitledCollective,’ 'Live Butoh' and ‘YDCQ’, among others.

He has performed across Australia, Germany, the UK, Canada and the USA. Peter’s first full-length choreography, Scribe, premiered in April 2012. It has since been remounted at the Judith Wright Centre, Brisbane. As a composer, Peter is interested in the merging of artistic practices, particularly between music and dance/movement. His studies at the Royal College of Music are generously supported by Mr Andrew Loewenthal and the Tait Memorial Trust.

Supporting Artists Alex Griffiths, flute Alex is currently studying for a Masters in Orchestral Artistry at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama with Gareth Davies, Philippa Davies, Ian Clarke and Christopher Green. She recently graduated from the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama studying predominantly with Sarah Newbold, where she played with all the colleges ensembles and reached the final of the concerto competition in 2014.

She is a founding member of the Artemis Trio who are recent recipients of the Cardiff Violins Chamber Prize and finalists of the McGrenary Chamber Competition. They frequently represent Music in Hospitals across England and Wales. She is generously supported by the Sir John Barbirolli Memorial Foundation and the Leverhulme Trust.

Thomas Marlin, Cello Thomas has appeared as a soloist with various orchestras in his native Australia including the Jan Sedivka Camerata and the Adelaide Youth Orchestra. He is the principal cellist of Janus Ensemble and in the past year has also featured as principal cellist with the Barbican Chamber Orchestra, Silk Street Sinfonia, GoodenSemble, Lakeside Ensemble and the Guildhall Symphony Orchestra. Recent highlights in London include Shostakovich’s Cello Concerto No. 1 with Janus Ensemble, a recital in the Barbican’s Milton Court Concert Hall, and joining the London Symphony Orchestra for a project under Sir Simon Rattle.

As a recitalist and chamber musician, Thomas has performed in famous venues such as the Rudolfinum in Prague, London’s Wigmore Hall and Elisabeth Murdoch Hall in Melbourne. He formed the Volta Quartet in 2014 and with them has travelled to Riga, Latvia, and been broadcast on BBC Radio 3. Thomas holds a Masters degree in Music Performance from the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, and Bachelor degrees from the National University of Singapore and the University of Tasmania.

Dr John Amis (1922-2013) Archive now online Former Tait Awardees, Jayson Gillham, piano and Katrina Sheppeard, soprano are carefully working through John Amis’ early interviews and uploading them onto the John Amis Archive YouTube channel. It is an exciting project to be involved with and they are publishing some incredible interviews that will not have been heard for over 50 years.

Some of the extraordinary artists John Amis interviewed for the BBC include Benjamin Britten, Tito Gobbi, Daniel Barenboim, Montserrat Caballé, Dame Myra Hess, Andre Previn, Jon Vickers, Leonard Bernstein and many many more.

Celebrating the 50th anniversary of the Sutherland-Williamson tour of Australia 1965

In 1965, 'La Stupenda' Joan Sutherland and Richard Bonynge worked with Frank Tait and John McCallum of JC Williamson's to produce an opera season that toured Australia's major theatres. The Sutherland-Williamson International Grand Opera Company would provide the foundations for the newly formed Australian Opera (now Opera Australia) heralding Joan Sutherland’s triumphant return to her homeland. She performed in five of the company’s eight operas along with a young and relatively unknown Italian tenor, Luciano Pavarotti.

“Sir Frank Tait has done the greatest service to Australian Theatre and to the arts of anyone we know."

Richard Bonynge Sir Frank died at the age of 81, after the Melbourne season finished and while the company were in Adelaide. His death marked the end of an era in the history of Australian theatre.
