WHO AM I?

My name is Tairiq Mansfield and I am from Columbia, SC. I spent most of my life as an only child until at the age of fifteen I was blessed with a little sister. As a child, I spent most of my time outside with friends playing sports or building forts in the neighboring forest. Three words to describe me are compassionate, persistent, and optimistic. If I could be any ice cream flavor, I would be cookies & cream. A nice classic flavor that you could never go wrong with and it always gets the job done. The flavor that’s for everyone. If I could be any type of animal then I would be a lion. I enjoy being around others similar to how lions roam in a pack, but I also like to be independent like the dominant male lion of a pack. If I could have any super power then it would be shape shifting. I like to think that I am innovative and discover new ways to do things and what better way to do that than becoming a shapeshifter.

I began my college career pursuing a degree in engineering before quickly realizing that it wasn’t my passion. Growing up I’ve always had an interest in design. I would spend long nights on my kitchen floor constructing toy Lego sets or model airplanes. I also spent most of my days outside with friends where I developed an intimate relationship with the natural world around me. However, it wasn’t until I discovered the profession of landscape architecture that I knew what my true passion was. Landscape architecture was perfect for me as it was a quintessential blend of design and nature. Throughout my time at Clemson University, I have developed a unique set of skills and talents that have prepared me for the work world. The faculty and staff of the Clemson University School of Architecture consistently put me in a position to succeed as they use an approach that allows me as the student to learn from my successes and failures. I have had the pleasure of experiencing design courses in both architecture and landscape architecture through my architecture minor. In these courses I have been able to refine my creative thinking processes, communication, and digital design skills. I have also gained knowledge and experience through my attendance at the 2023 LABash Conference in Manhattan, Kansas. At LABash I sat in on several lectures and workshops. Lecture topics included gentrification & green-gentrification, public engagement in public spaces, the effect of play on communities, being YOU in your designs, and more. This wide span of topics has encouraged me to continue learning more about the different subdisciplines within the profession of landscape architecture which I hope to do through internship and field experiences. As I reflect on the experience I have gained through these interactions, I hope to one day design spaces that create the same intimate feelings and passions that I felt as a child and as a perspective landscape architect. While I have experience in classroom and conference settings, I plan to intern for design firms in hopes to gain experience in real world work situations. I aspire to become a licensed landscape architect whose passions are exhibited through my work and whose projects create long lasting effects on others. I look forward to discussing my future career interests with you and learn more about your firm and colleagues. Please feel free to contact me via email, tairiqm@g.clemson.edu, or phone, (803)3632189, if you have any further questions. Thank you for your time and consideration. Best, Tairiq Mansfield

THREE-SECOND SLOPE RUN FIRST YEAR: BASIC DESIGN I

This model is designed to mimic a real world landscape and its experiences with storm water run off. Using the adjective “flexible” inspired by the Dragon’s Blood Tree’s ability to adapt to its harsh environmental conditions, the model has bends and curves to slow down the flow of water and limit flooding and erosion that would’ve been caused in a real world situation.

WOODLAND CEMETERY MEMORIAL & COMMEMORATIVE WALK THIRD YEAR: REGIONAL DESIGN

18

Named as a site on the new Upstate SC African American Heritage Trail, Clemson University’s Woodland Cemetery is a highly sensitive site. Discovered to have over 500 unmarked graves, the Woodland Cemetery raised awareness about the deep rooted African American history found in Clemson and it’s surrounding areas. As the designer I tried my utmost best to remain respectful to those buried here and their families. In honor of the African Americans and indentured servants who helped build Clemson’s campus, the design features a black granite memorial and a commemorative walk. The main philosophies behind the design are scale and materiality in hopes to encourage reflection and contemplation amongst those who encounter the site.

19

WOODLAND CEMETERY MEMORIAL This memorial has been thoughtfully designed to evoke a sense of confinement for those who engage with it. With black granite pillars of varying sizes, it creates a dynamic interplay of hiding and revealing, offering a unique experience as visitors maneuver around them. This design allows different portions of the monument to come into view, creating a nuanced encounter shaped by each pillar's placement. The pillars beyond their larger than human scale carry a profound symbolism as they represent prison bars. They serve as a poignant homage to the emotions of imprisonment experienced by the workers who contributed to the construction of Clemson University. Positioned at the heart of a water pool, with a gentle downpour of water further enhancing the serene atmosphere, the monument encourages contemplation and reflection. The reflective nature of the black granite enhances the impact of the memorial. As visitors read the text and absorb the historical narrative, the mirrored surface becomes a canvas, capturing not only the monument but also the emotions stirred within the viewer. This reflection adds another layer to the experience, fostering a deeper connection between the viewer and the sentiments captured in the monument.
