Philip Johnson, Frank Lloyd Wright, Eero Saarinen, Frank Gehry. Besides their iconic status, these projects and individuals have something special in common: Edward Fields Carpet Makers. Each of these buildings features custom Edward Fields carpets specified by their designers. Edward Fields’s custom designs, it seems, are often present at high points on the American architectural landscape.

Edward Fields the man was many things: entrepreneur, visionary, family man, dandy. He was born in Brooklyn, New York, in 1912, the second of five children in a family that fostered creativity and ambition.

Edward, not only built a thriving business in difficult circumstances, he elevated carpet-making to an art form.

His childhood, spent mostly upstate, came to an abrupt end with the sudden death of his father in 1929.

It was the Depression and Edward was forced to move back to New York and go to work. As fate would have it, the uncle who took in young Edward was in the carpet business. Edward learned all he could in a short time, then struck out on his own. He married his sweetheart, Eleanor, and the couple spent their honeymoon setting up a modest showroom space in Manhattan. It was 1935 and Edward Fields Carpet Makers was officially in business, its founder all of 23 years old.

Though Fields would go on to revolutionize the carpet business, his affair with the industry was decidedly not love at first sight. Although successful — by the mid1940s, Edward Fields had become one of the foremost wholesale carpet-supply houses in New York — Fields himself was bored with the ordinary broadloom he sold. Carpeting was not considered a design element.

Instead, it was merely functional: people opted for wall-to-wall carpet to protect their wooden floors.

While Fields often found the carpet business tedious, he positively relished the opportunity to work on custom projects. He sought opportunities to work on special commissions for interior designers and architects. This was the work that challenged and inspired him, and eventually enabled him to envision a new model for his company.

To become a luxury custom house, Fields saw that he would need absolute control over design, manufacturing, and sales. For this new product, he would need a new tool that would place each fiber in a carpet with the precision of a painter applying paint to canvas.

In the mid-1930s, along with his younger brother, Elliot, a talented machinist, Fields developed a tool that forever changed their rug and carpet production: the Magic Needle. The Magic Needle would come to

He sought out the country’s finest artistic talent to articulate a contemporary yet timeless style, otherwise known as the Edwards Fields aesthetic. By now, it was the 1950s, the golden age of American design, and there was no shortage of designers to consider.

One such talent was Raymond Loewy, widely

considered the ‘Father of Industrial Design,’ who was responsible for the design of such iconic objects as the curvy glass Coca-Cola bottle, the Lucky Strike cigarette logo, and several models of Studebaker cars.

A seemingly unlikely match for carpet design, Loewy’s rugs were an immediate success and remain among the best-loved in the archive. Textile designer Marion Dorn was another collaborator — one who even served the company intermittently as creative director — as were Burt Groedel, Adolph Gottlieb, Van Day Truex, and Robert Motherwell.

Fields’s hard work was paying off; custom rugs and carpets were catching on. Just as the company’s momentum was on the rise, it received an unexpected boost: The pre-finished hardwood floor was invented and introduced in apartment buildings across New York City.

Pre-waxed, durable, and requiring minimum maintenance, it freed designers from the tyranny of protective wall-to-wall. Seeing a golden opportunity, Fields was soon touting his rugs as ‘Art for the Fifth Wall.’

Carpet-as-art became an accepted concept in the design community. Designers came to think of rugs as opportunities for creative expression rather than simply necessary floor coverings. To nurture this most welcome trend, Fields took a cue from the fashion world and formulated collections, cohesive suites of designs intended to inspire his clients. The company’s first-ever rug collection, designed by Loewy and introduced at Lord & Taylor in 1952, was a hit. It was upon this occasion that Fields coined the term ‘area rug’, which was immediately absorbed into the vernacular.

Encouraged by its success in New York, the company began to expand nationally. In 1955, an Edward Fields showroom opened in Chicago; in 1962, another launched in Beverly Hills, California. Outposts in Miami, Dallas, Houston, and San Francisco followed over the next two decades. Edward Fields enabled designers to offer their clients something truly unique, and market after market welcomed the company with open arms.

Much of the company’s most cherished lore came out of the Beverly Hills showroom. Brothers Edward and Elliott, who ran the showroom, threw legendary cocktail parties there. The company’s individualistic approach was a perfect fit with the star mentality: The same Hollywood starlets who demanded couture gowns were now lining up for bespoke carpets. Soon, Edward Fields’s handmade carpets were installed in the homes of Charlton Heston, Mary Tyler Moore, Dionne Warwick, and Johnny Mathis. Today that celebrity tradition continues: Steven Spielberg, Robin Williams, and Madonna have all commissioned Edward Fields rugs for their residences.

Hollywood royalty eventually extended to actual royalty and heads of state. In 1956, Fields famously created a carpet for Grace Kelly, the newly crowned Princess of Monaco, as a wedding present. Employing red and white, the official colors of the principality, it also featured a searing blue matched precisely to the princess’s eyes. In 1960, working with First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy’s interior designer, Fields began a relationship with the White House that continues to this day.

By now, Fields had become a recognized figure in national design circles. In 1978, he was named Honorary Fellow of the American Society of Interior Designers; he was also a member of the board of the Fashion Institute of Technology. As Edward Fields the company thrived, Edward Fields the man enjoyed the spotlight with an easy grace and a deep sense of personal fulfillment. This happy period would prove too short. On April 17, 1979, at 66, Fields died from a heart attack. The design community lost one of its greatest innovators and bon vivants but, thankfully, Fields had lived long enough to enjoy his success and sense the impact of his life’s work.

While Edward Fields Carpet Makers had always been closely identified with the larger-than-life character of its founder, Fields had taken care to mentor a strong 00

team, made up of relatives and staff so loyal they were like family, to carry on the business. Under the stewardship of Edward’s son, Jack, who became president in 1980, the company continued to flourish.

That same year a new, larger factory — what the elder Fields had referred to as his ‘dream factory’ — opened in Queens, New York, expanding capacity, streamlining production, and allowing the company to make its move into the commercial market. As Wall Street boomed, CEOs became celebrities and suddenly their offices had to look as good as their homes. Edward Fields was designing wall-to-wall carpet and area rugs for corporate and retail clients that included IBM, Merck, General Electric, Merrill Lynch, and Louis Vuitton. Commissions for top executives led to private jobs for their residences and pleasure craft; custom carpet orders for luxury homes, private jets, and yachts were also on the rise. Edward Fields’s ascendance in these new markets would sustain the company over the next decades.

As a vibrant independent company in an industry of major corporate players, Edward Fields had long been an attractive target for acquisition. Fields himself had never entertained such offers, but in 2005 Jack received an inquiry that piqued his curiosity. It came from a Chinese rug company called Tai Ping. Tai Ping, which

From the start, Tai Ping saw Edward Fields for the gem that it was — a trailblazer and a classic American design brand. It was committed to not only preserving that legacy, but also expanding Edward Fields’s reach in the contemporary market. As a luxury company trying to gain a foothold in the U.S, Tai Ping saw in Edward Fields a case study from which to learn and a platform from which to grow.

Gaining access to Edward Fields’s extensive design archive, Tai Ping designers were in awe at the richness of their inheritance. For a company new to the U.S, uncovering a history peppered with iconic American names — clients such as Astor, Rockefeller, and Kennedy; collaborators including Philip Johnson and Frank Lloyd Wright — was overwhelming. Old designs were updated and revived; new designs were created based on the Edward Fields sensibility. Edward Fields’s artists and salespeople, many of whom had been with the company for decades, guided Tai Ping staff through the archives and the brand’s best business practices, sharing company stories and keeping the Edward Fields culture alive.

Meanwhile, Edward Fields factory workers were teaching the artisans at Tai Ping factories in Nanhai, China how to use the Magic Needle. It took months before these skilled craftspeople were able to create rugs with textures rich enough to bear the Edward Fields name. But once they did, they were indistinguishable from those once made in Queens.

And so another wave of expansion began in 2007.

The new Edward Fields Carpet Makers Manhattan showroom, a stunning 4,200 square-feet space, opened just a block away from Edward and Eleanor’s original shop. In 2008, Edward Fields Studios (embedded in Tai Ping showrooms) opened in San Francisco, Los Angeles, Chicago, and Dallas. Loyal Edward Fields clients are now joined by younger designers first discovering the brand. The company’s artists — who still work one-on-one with clients and design primarily in watercolor — have never been busier.

The showroom is emerging once again as the salon it had been in Fields’s time, a site of creative collaboration where designers come to be inspired. Seventy-five years later, his vision is still vibrant: Edward Fields Carpet Makers creates bespoke carpets to the highest standards and remains perfectly calibrated to its era.

It is the quintessential contemporary design company.

Like the English tailor’s workshop, Edward Fields Carpet Makers has a reverence for the handmade, the integrity of a craft passed from master to apprentice, and the conviction that even the most beautiful item becomes more special when it fits like a glove. Any Edward Fields carpet design, whether based on an edition or simply dreamed up by the client, is custom — custom in a way that few manufactured products are now.

When Edward Fields established his company in 1935, he made a commitment to a bespoke product and service, and the company honors that promise to this day. Each one is the result of a creative journey documented through watercolors, renderings, handdrawn patterns, hand-dyed fibers, and carpet samples.

The client is always at the center of the rug-making process: Every decision from design through manufacturing to installation is made based upon his or her specifications. Each design begins with a consultation between the client and an artist at the Studio. Some clients come with visual cues — a sketch, a photo, a fabric swatch — and let the design develop from there.

Inspiration is also in bountiful supply at the Edward Fields Studio, an inviting workshop full of books and objets in addition to, of course, a breathtaking array of samples and full-scale rugs from the editions, which often provide the springboard to a personalized color scheme, size, pattern, or fiber choice.

Once the design of the rug or carpet emerges, colors are assigned. Clients find hundreds of poms — monochromatic bundles of yarn in a range of hues — at the Studio, and thousands more colors are possible through the custom dye process. Working with the artist, a client considers dozens of shades within each color family, observing how a color’s quality shifts depending on fiber type; for example, the same color may appear rich and saturated in delicate silk and understated in dull silk.

Edward Fields designs are rendered first in watercolor. These exquisite paintings, which capture the essence of a design with more nuance and soul than any computer graphic can, are still regularly produced in the

Edward Fields Studio, becoming an indispensable guide at the factory and, once the carpet is complete, yet another unique addition to the design archive.

From here, the baton is passed to the craftspeople.

A stroll through the factory reveals carpets at every phase of production, starting with the raw material: 100 percent New Zealand wool, pure silk, raw jute.

Through the carding, spinning, and twisting process, snowy masses of raw wool are teased into yarns, ready to be dyed. Pigments in colors more numerous than any rainbow are blended to attain the precise shade specified by the client and the Edward Fields artist.

Before tufting can begin, the pattern must be mapped out — quite literally. Craftspeople meticulously transfer a life-size sketch of the design to a rug or carpet’s underlying canvas. This sketch becomes the trail that guides the tufters to the completion of the project, a process that often takes weeks.

As the two-dimensional vision becomes a threedimensional work of art, the commission comes to life on the loom. Using an iteration of Fields’s own invention, the Magic Needle, hand-tufting goes on today much as it did when he opened his first factory decades ago. Tufting is a craft in which workers must be thoroughly trained — a senior Edward Fields craftsperson has spent years honing his or her skills. Much care is taken to ensure that the quality of hand-tufting is always signature Edward Fields: generous, rich, obsessively executed, with the obvious touch of the hand that makes each creation so distinct.

Edward Fields Studio, becoming an indispensable guide at the factory and, once the carpet is complete, yet another unique addition to the design archive.

From here, the baton is passed to the craftspeople.

A stroll through the factory reveals carpets at every phase of production, starting with the raw material: 100 percent New Zealand wool, pure silk, raw jute.

Through the carding, spinning, and twisting process, snowy masses of raw wool are teased into yarns, ready to be dyed. Pigments in colors more numerous than any rainbow are blended to attain the precise shade specified by the client and the Edward Fields artist.

Before tufting can begin, the pattern must be mapped out — quite literally. Craftspeople meticulously transfer a life-size sketch of the design to a rug or carpet’s underlying canvas. This sketch becomes the trail that guides the tufters to the completion of the project, a process that often takes weeks.

As the two-dimensional vision becomes a threedimensional work of art, the commission comes to life on the loom. Using an iteration of Fields’s own invention, the Magic Needle, hand-tufting goes on today much as it did when he opened his first factory decades ago. Tufting is a craft in which workers must be thoroughly trained — a senior Edward Fields craftsperson has spent years honing his or her skills. Much care is taken to ensure that the quality of hand-tufting is always signature Edward Fields: generous, rich, obsessively executed, with the obvious touch of the hand that makes each creation so distinct.

The Archive Edition is the result of a 2006 expedition into Edward Fields’s past. At first, the word ‘archive’ seemed a rather lofty name for the dozens of cartons discovered tucked away at the factory in Queens, New York. Within those boxes, however, was nothing less than a treasure trove of inspiration.

Over the decades, Edward Fields artists had documented the development of every custom design.

Thousands of watercolors, photographs, press clippings, and yarn samples were recovered. As the Edward Fields artists sifted through the findings — pulling old sketches; rendering new ones; reviving colors, patterns, and textures employed by the designers before the — the company’s past came to life as never before.

The result, a suite of some 40 designs, was aptly called the Archive Edition. Updated and re-colored, the designs of this edition showcase many Edward Fields hallmarks, among them mastery of texture and color, facility with artistic abstraction, and unparalleled handtufting. The Archive Edition includes some of Edward Fields’s most recognizable and best-loved patterns including retro geometrics, lyrical abstract patterns, and riotous florals. The Archive Edition is, in essence, a visual history of the brand itself.
