Finnish Forest

For many Finns, the forest is a place to take a break from the hectic life. How about having the same feeling in your home?

“I often try to avoid making my photos too realistic – whereas a painter uses his brush to create impressionistic features, I use long exposure and lens movement. My work focuses on light, colour, and form – and the changes they live through. ”

“I believe a good painting has a sense of danger and brutal beauty. My work is like jazz improvisation, exploring the rhythm, moods and volume. I rarely make sketches, as a rule, themes and ideas move from one painting to another. Thematically my body of work is based on a thought experiment, challenging the viewer to reflect on their own relationship with the surrounding world in a new way.”

“In recent years I have began to make paintings with liquid japanese ink. With the inkpaintings, I gave up making precise sketches and also cut my art tools to a minimum. I focused my attention on how little is enough to express myself in the most comprehensive way.”

“I have been concentrating on my signature style and technique of acrylic painting for about 11 years now, I envision the world submerged underwater and have created a surreal environment for my imagination to roam free.

This painting is a homage to the idea of joy, the will to live and experience life. The winters are harsh and cold up north where the nature turns completely white. When the sun comes out the spirits of the people are reborn.”

TUULI MERILÄINEN

“I’m inspired by Finnish nature and animals that you can find in the forests. In my art I like to combine abstract painting with more figurative approach.

Inspiration to this artwork came when I was picking mushrooms in an old dark spruce forest. The forest was full of green moss fields and the atmosphere was magical. There were many animal prints on the moss. Unfortunately that forest no longer exists but this painting is a memory of that.”

JOHANNA ALANKO

“My main research is focused on textures and layers. My abstract artworks are strongly inspired by nature, sex, Finnish mythologies, humans and the abstract human body.

This painting is part of my series ‘’Nature is a symbol’’ describing the power of Finnish nature. Lingonberry is known for its feminine healing powers - like the meaning of this piece. It’s made to give energy and fight against sickness.”

MAIJA KURKI

“With the help of photography I am in control of the visible reality; I can create strange places and perspectives, like flickers of reality which may have never existed. Through the 3D glasses the photographs come closer or distance themselves; they surround the viewer with their own reality.

This picture is a part of my photo series Studies on Flesh. In this series I want to consider the balance between being full of life and subject to perishing at the same time.”

“My works are picturesque wall sculptures, reliefs. I work on each piece for months to get the result I want. I cut every piece by hand and grind and paint the surfaces three to four times to make them look glazed. Each artwork is a unique handmade sculpture.”
