lexibility and adaptability! It was a year of extremes here on the Tahoe Rim Trail and flexibility and adaptability have been the keys to our programs’ success this summer. After several years of drought, this past winter delivered a massive snowfall followed up by the fourth hottest summer on record. In late June and July we sweltered under the blazing sun and by September we were back to using every layer in our packs to deal with several inches of snow on the trail.

In true Tahoe Rim Trail Association fashion, we rolled with the punches! Our fantastic partners off the hill provided training spaces for our trail crew to practice and refresh chainsaw training.

Our Segment Hikes and several work projects were pushed later into the summer and we even rescheduled the July Thru Hike to September. We also dealt with the lingering effects of the drought on our trail in the form of dead and dying trees. Our crews removed over 600 down trees from the trail and initiated a multiyear project to identify and prioritize hazard trees to be removed. Through all of the weather challenges, our team and our participants persevered! Big thanks go out to all of our program participants who took constant schedule changes in stride as we navigated around the remaining snow pack. Additionally, thank you to our volunteers who made it all happen! Adjusting schedules, addressing storm impacts on the trail, managing expectations, assessing snow conditions, keeping everyone motivated in extreme heat or frigid temperatures, and still being able to complete projects and programs successfully is a testament to the amazing people that make up the Tahoe Rim Trail community. Thank you. Let’s do it all again next year (maybe minus the extremes)!

he Tahoe Rim Trail Association’s 165 Mile Club lists over 2,000 individuals who have travelled the entirety of the TRT. Many of these hikers, bikers and equestrians have completed the trail multiple times, and one consistent observation I hear from repeat 165 milers is

by Chris Binder that the trail is different every time and each Director of Trail Ops new adventure provides unique rewards. Not only is the trail a dynamic organism that is constantly reacting and responding to changes from the weather, wildlife, vegetation and other users, it is physically being reshaped by our volunteer Crew Leaders and their crews. So even if you think you’ve seen it all on the TRT, I challenge you to revisit some of your favorite areas and to head out to see some of the locations mentioned below. Maybe you missed a short section of trail on your thru or segment hike, maybe the trail has been rerouted or has a new vista spur and viewpoint, or maybe you’ll simply notice something incredible that escaped you the last time you were there.

“Hidden” Trails Over the course of 165+ miles it’s surprisingly easy to miss a few hundred feet here and there. For example, take a closer look at the trail as it passes the Spooner South trailhead heading north towards Highway 50. While the vast majority of trail users tend to turn east at the kiosk and travel through the parking lot to reach the highway at

Spooner North trailhead, the official TRT actually skirts behind the kiosk, through a stand of quaking aspens, and down to the road on single-track trail. This is 500 feet of trail I’d bet most 165-club members haven’t travelled. There are other similar “hidden” trail sections, so have fun exploring and trying to find them all (here’s a hint, look for one at Barker Pass)!

Reroutes Large and Small If you want to check out the latest major reroute on the trail look no further than Mott Canyon (see the article on this project on page 8).

While such a large reroute is years or even decades in the making, each new trail building season brings shorter reroutes that will keep you busy if you want to claim you’ve travelled the entire TRT as it exists today. For a great view from the north shore check out last year’s reroute south of Tahoe Meadows on Chickadee Ridge. Remember those two dusty road walks near Martis Peak? Go from Brockway to Mount Rose next year and you might be surprised to find one of them missing, replaced with half a mile of brand new trail for you to explore.

Vista Spurs While some of our favorite vistas have always been part of the trail, we are continually discovering new viewpoints and building spur trails to tie them into the TRT system. In at least one case, previously known vistas that were forgotten and overgrown are being rediscovered, brushed out and re-signed, allowing access to some of the best views in and around the Basin. Look for spectacular vistas and new spur trails leading to them in the vicinity of Painted Rock and near Kingsbury North. Extra points if you can find the 300 feet of trail on the East Shore most trail users regard as a vista spur that are actually the official TRT – the route most users take is in fact an equestrian bypass to avoid slippery granite. Happy hunting!

The Aftermath of a Historic Winter The Tahoe region received over 600 inches of snow last winter. The spring saw flooded meadows, hundreds of downed trees, and damaged bridges and signs. Crews spent much of the summer repairing the damage.

his morning, I went on a virtual tour of the ancient city of Petra, the Taj Mahal, base camp at Mt. Everest, the Bright Angel Trail of the Grand Canyon, the canals of Venice, the forests surrounding Mount Fuji, and, yes, the Tahoe Rim Trail. By applying its street view technology to a portable backpack design, the Google Trekker has been capturing 360 degree views of places

Thanks to Outdoor Programs coordination with Google, the TRTA, and a Director group of dedicated volunteers, 132 miles of the Tahoe Rim Trail can now be viewed using Google Street View from your home or phone. Just as a guidebook or a photograph cannot replace or fully prepare one to venture into the wilderness, following Google’s Trekker path through the Tahoe Rim Trail offers another tool, not a solution, to your upcoming hiking, backpacking, and riding adventures. For those who have yet to make the journey, the Google Street View offers a glimpse into what the Star Lake outlet crossing looks like or the sandiness of the Sand Harbor Overlook to would be backpackers and day-hikers/riders. Simply find a spot on the TRT while in Google Maps and drop the little orange human to view the trail as if you were standing there. For those who have already hiked all or parts of the Tahoe Rim Trail, Google Maps TRT street view is a great way to take your friends and family to the places you’ve visited on the trail, scope out certain sections for your planning needs and virtually fly around the trail from home. There’s nothing like hiking or riding on the TRT in person, but the TRT Street View offers another great tool for your next adventure.

While I still hope to someday travel to Petra, Everest, Fuji, Venice, the Taj Mahal, and the Grand Canyon, the Google Trekker inspires more curiosity, not less, and it is our hope at the TRTA that the inclusion of 132 miles of the Tahoe Rim Trail on Google Street View will provide yet another way for individuals to explore, visit, and be inspired by the Tahoe Rim Trail.

2018 Guided Hike Registration Make sure to mark your calendar for February 6 and February 14, 2018! The TRTA will begin accepting applications for our popular 15-day guided Thru Hike and our 12-week guided Segment Hike program for summer of 2018.

You train, you hike, and we do the rest.

These programs generally fill as soon as the application period opens so make sure to visit our website over the winter to learn all about the programs and if it is right for you!

Views We Love The Adopt-a-Vista program honors individuals with some of the most spectacular views on the Tahoe Rim Trail Over the past year the Tahoe Rim Trail Association has added two miles and two vistas to our list of adopted features on the TRT. Daggett Mile 5 was adopted in memory of Dr. Bruce Halperin. The Bruce D. “Geek” Haplerin Memorial Mile remembers an excellent physician and positive, upbeat person with a great sense of humor.

Adjacent to the Halperin Memorial Mile, Daggett Mile One was adopted in memory of Betty Kolbeck. The Betty “Squeaky” Kolbeck Mile is dedicated in memory of Ms. Kolbeck’s passion for adventure and warm, giving spirit.

The two adopted vistas are also located near the Daggett Trail System on the south side of the TRT. Family and friends of Peter O’Brien dedicated a beautiful vista of Mt. Tallac, a mountain that has special meaning to the family, in his memory. The memorial vista is located 1.7 miles north of the Kingsbury North Trailhead and

looks out across the blue waters of Tahoe towards Mt. Tallac and the peaks of Desolation Wilderness. Lastly, our team of crew leaders adopted a vista in honor of John McKenna to recognize all of the time, support, and expertise he provides to our trail building team each year. This honorary vista is located at the point of the newly constructed Mott Canyon Reroute overlooking the Carson Valley.

We are honored to have such fantastic additions to our TRTA Vistas and Miles this past year!

Seven YBCC trips took place in 2017, reaching 75 local and regional youth, 60% of whom reside in urban areas.

Due to our generous sponsors and funders, over 60% of participants were able to attend YBCC at low or no cost.

The TRTA partnered with six local organizations, including the Tahoe Institute for Natural Science, Girl Scouts of the Sierra Nevada, SOS Outreach, the Boys & Girls Club of Lake Tahoe, Tahoe Family Solutions, and the YMCA of San Francisco.

Jr. Trail Builders Stewarding the Future of the Tahoe Rim Trail

This summer, 23 youth from the Boys & Girls Club of Lake Tahoe took part in our Jr. Trail Builders program, learning about Leave No Trace wilderness ethics, trail stewardship, and taking part in volunteer trail maintenance and trail building efforts. Participants cleaned up trash from around the Boys & Girls Club facility, Trout Creek area and Echo Summit Adventure Mountain. Seven BGCLT members spent two full days helping construct a portion of the Mott Canyon reroute and can now claim builder’s bragging rights on a brand new section of the TRT. Jr. Trail Builder participants not only learned about the how and why of trail construction, but their active participation in this brand new program also increased the amount of investment and ownership they feel about their local environment. A HUGE thank you to all the crew leaders and volunteers who made this program a success and to Vail Resorts EpicPromise for the funding that made it all happen!

Membership Memories

What an honor it has been to join this organization and meet everyone that is a part of this wonderful network. We have had some great member events this summer such as the Great Basin Membership Drive in June and the Member’s Appreciation Hike in July. Thank you to all that were able to attend. It was a pleasure to get to meet you and swap trail stories.

GOING THE EXTRA MILE The Mott Canyon Reroute

The trail from Kingsbury Grade to Big Meadow boasts some of the most stunning and iconic landscapes found in the Tahoe Rim Trail system, including the alpine beauty of Star Lake and Freel Peak, the highest point in the Tahoe Basin. Unfortunately, this segment is also host to one of the TRT’s least popular stretches, a nearly half-mile of dirt road commonly associated with injuries and four-letter profanities: Mott Canyon. For hikers, bikers and equestrians, this highly unpleasant, rocky, dusty and loose road (with a 30%+ grade to boot!) can end up being the worst part of an otherwise spectacular day out on the trail. Fortunately, the TRT on the road at Mott Canyon is no more. Thanks to the incredible efforts of our trail crew, the Mott Canyon road walk has been replaced with spectacular single-track.

When the TRT was initially conceived of in the early 1980s, trail building was approached with the goal of completing a full loop around the Tahoe Basin as soon as possible. Utilizing this strategy meant embracing existing trails and incorporating several roads to reduce the amount of new trail construction and avoid private property. The road alignments were always intended to be temporary and meant to be abandoned as soon as new trail could be put in place to supplant them. Since 2001 and the completion of the initial loop, the TRTA has been whittling away at road walks around the trail, including stretches near Daggett Summit, Mount Rose, and other locations. Like all new trail construction, these reroutes involve lengthy and costly processes including environmental review work and fundraising. While eliminating the road walk at Mott Canyon was always high on the list of potential projects, such obstacles kept implementation at bay.

Thanks to our partnerships with Vail Resorts and the US Forest Service, an Environmental Assessment (EA) of the Mott Canyon project was included in planning for Heavenly Mountain Ski Resort’s Epic Discovery Project in 2014. With approval of the EA in motion, the TRTA was able to start implementing the long-awaited reroute by flagging a new trail corridor that not only eliminates the road walk but also provides incredible views of the Carson Valley. Over the course of two years, the TRTA hosted three dozen public workdays and led over a hundred individual volunteers to complete the project. With side-slopes exceeding 70% in some areas 8

and boulders the size of large cars complicating the construction process, the technical challenges of building the new trail segment were significant. Nevertheless, TRTA volunteers stepped up to the task and succeeded in building nearly three-quarters of a mile of beautiful new trail that will be appreciated and remembered by thousands of trail users each year.

VOLUNTEER SPOTLIGHT

A Team Effort Keith and Marilyn Sanders aren’t exactly local residents but each year they make the long commute from their home east of Sacramento to the basin or temporarily move up to the Lake during the trail season to dig in on the action. As two of our very dedicated volunteers, we asked Keith and Marilyn what keeps them coming back year after year.

How long have you both been volunteering for the TRTA? Around five or six years.

How did you get started and what keeps you coming back?

We signed up for a backcountry camp and had a good experience so decided to sign up for several trail work days. The work is physically challenging but at the end of each day there is a good feeling of having contributed to building something that many people will enjoy for years.

What’s your favorite section of the TRT? Why? Probably Mt. Rose with its natural beauty, Galena Falls, the challenge of reaching the top, and the spectacular views of the lake from near Rose Knob.

Can you describe a memorable experience you’ve had on the TRT or volunteering with the TRTA? The experience of working with younger volunteers such as the Algerian Leadership group and Generation Green were memorable. Perhaps we did not complete as much trail work as with more seasoned volunteers but the younger volunteers often formed strong memories of the value of the work and the worth to others of being

Did you have a background of recreating on trails or volunteering for a trail organization before you began to volunteer with the TRTA? We attended a two-day volunteer training with the US Forest Service then worked several months as trail monitors and to restore camp sites in Desolation Wilderness.

We hiked about 90 miles as trail monitors in the wilderness. We enjoyed hiking around Lake Tahoe then participated in several TRTA sponsored guided hikes, and decided it was good to help build trails as well as walk on them. And we were hooked.

Volunteers or Bust!

This was a monumental year for the TRTA and it’s all thanks to our incredible volunteer force! All season long volunteer Crew Leaders have been busy removing over 650 down trees from the trail. Guides took on a 3rd weekly segment group making it five trips around the TRT, two of them as a thru hike and three in segments. A fantastic new trail reroute was complete at Mott Canyon moving the trail off a steep, dusty road and onto single-track trail. Office volunteers helped out all year long with essential admin operations. Volunteers helped engage community members at over 20 events in the region. The public was also inspired by volunteers on guided treks, backcountry skills courses, and Trail Talks. In addition, volunteers made major assessments to hazard trees and trail deficiencies on the trail corridor and started another trail reroute on Martis Road! We want to thank all of our crew leaders, office volunteers, and trail guides that provide essential support helping to preserve the trail and inspire stewards. Thank you from the bottom of our boot soles!

Tahoe Rim Trail Mott Canyon Reroute Project Completed in September 2017, the Mott Canyon Reroute Project removed over 1,400ft of a steep, dusty, access road from the TRT system and replaced it with 0.64 miles of single-track trail. The new reroute now provides users a better trail experience with incredible views of the Carson Valley.

Connecting Local Youth to the Outdoors Project Seven local and regional organizations partnered with the Tahoe Rim Trail Association to make 75 kids’ dreams a reality by taking them out into the wilderness to learn the essentials of backpacking and challenge themselves to grow as individuals and leaders. In addition, the TRTA held four winter day camps and two multi-week trail stewardship opportunities for youth from the Boys and Girls Club of Lake Tahoe.

Hazard Tree Identification and Mitigation Project The TRTA, in partnership with the Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit and Lake Tahoe Nevada State Parks, is addressing the effects of the Sierra’s tree mortality crisis and its impact on the Tahoe Rim Trail by training volunteers, assessing and prioritizing hazard trees, and removing those trees deemed highest risk.

Martis Roadwalk Reroute Construction Project This project is moving the TRT off of a forest road and onto about 3,000 ft. of newly constructed and sustainable single-track trail.
