O

ur 35th year has been a year of big changes at the Tahoe Rim Trail Association! Internally, we have been addressing labor law changes that will significantly impact our staff schedules starting December 1st and have taken on the monumental task of upgrading to a new database.

Over 25,000 records have been moved and cleaned as we switch to a more modern, efficient database. In addition, we are in the process of creating a new tahoerimtrail.org website designed to educate trail users on recreational

In May, Mary Bennington retired as the organization’s Executive Director and I have the honor of taking the helm.

Chris Binder was hired to fill the role of Director of Trail Operations and we hired Maggie Brandenburg to lead and expand our youth programs as we work to build the next generation of trails stewards. More change was afoot this fall with the departure of Shannon Skarritt, our fantastic Sustainable Funding Director who has moved back to her home in Michigan. There is never a dull moment!

What hasn’t changed is the Tahoe Rim Trail Association’s commitment to the trail.

Together as a community of trail users, volunteers, members, and donors we have made significant improvements to the trail, recreation in the Tahoe Basin and the trail user experience. The dedication of our volunteers continues to amaze me. In 2016 they contributed over 18,000 hours on projects ranging from building trail and guiding hikes to managing our website and keeping our important files organized.

Our members and donors have also stepped up to the plate to support the trail they love. In 2010 government grants accounted for over 33% of the organization’s income. The availability of government funding for trails and recreation has declined significantly since then and in 2015 government grant funding only accounted for 11% of our income. Our organization has weathered this storm and emerged with a more diversified stable funding stream to support the trail because of the generosity of our members and donors!

The last thing that hasn’t changed at our organization is how humbling it is to work here. Every day I am blown away by the dedication of all of the individuals who interact with the trail such as the organizations and groups who each year sponsor events or provide grant funding, board members who help out in a pickle when we need van drivers at 5:00am, guides that spend their summer making sure others know the joy of spending a day on the trail, individuals that are so passionate about the trail that they have been TRTA members for decades, our partners who graciously offer their expertise or resources, and crew leaders who take on the equivalent of a full time job each summer ensuring that the Trail remains a world class destination. Thank you for all that you do. I’m looking forward to teaming up again for a successful (and eventful) 2017!

The Dirt On Trail Operations

T

he 2016 trail building season saw our incredible volunteer workforce accomplish remarkable work on the Tahoe Rim Trail, with nearly 250 volunteers contributing over 9000 hours to help manage the Tahoe Rim Trail. A vast majority by Chris Binder Director of Trail Ops of those hours were dedicated to the physical work of improving or building quality singletrack to ensure that the Trail continues to provide one of the most environmentally conscious and inspiring trail experiences.

In addition to the critical work of building and maintaining trail tread, staff and volunteers are also dedicated to a number of other programs that are less visible to the average trail user. The goals of these programs are to improve volunteer and user safety, trail sustainability, and user enjoyment. During recent meetings with trail management partners, several key issues in these program areas have been identified for expansion over the next few years. As we transition from the construction season to the planning season, we will be working with our volunteers and partners to build the foundations of programs that will shape the future of the Tahoe Rim Trail in profound and meaningful ways.

Volunteer Safety and Training The 2016 season has put volunteer safety into greater focus for the organization than at any other time in its 35 year history. While we have long been committed to providing our volunteers with the best safety and skills training in the region, we will be re-evaluating our safety and training program for 2017.

Trail Use Numbers Nearly 30 trail counters are being utilized around the trail in order to assist the Association in understanding the number and type of users on various sections of the trail. Analyzing this data will be crucial for understanding use trends, pinpointing areas of possible user conflict, and planning for future trail improvements.

Overnight Use Impacts As the number of trail users continues to increase, the potential for negative impacts from overnight users increases as well. We will be working with our land management partners to identify areas of the trail that currently (or will likely in the future) experience resource degradation due to concentrated overnight use, and develop strategies to mitigate those impacts.

Hazard Tree Monitoring and Mitigation Tree mortality rates are on the rise throughout the Sierra Nevada, and the Tahoe Basin is predicted to follow suit. Working closely with the Forest Service, we will be rolling out procedures to identify priority sites along the trail for hazard tree monitoring and mitigation. A proactive approach to this critical issue may help save property and lives.

As we move forward with these crucial trail management programs I’d like to thank our members and volunteers in advance for their continued support. Thank you for your dedication!

he TRTA is an organization of seven staff and an army of dedicated volunteers. I say army because if I attempted to accomplish what the outdoor program volunteer team achieved in eight months, I would have to work two and a half years straight without vacation or being sick!

Guides, Ambassador and behind the scenes program volunteers donated 4,830 hours this year sharing their passion and knowledge of the Tahoe Rim Trail to help create safe and varied opportunities to bring others outdoors and onto the Tahoe Rim Trail. Whether it was leading one of eight interpretive guided hikes, providing skilled instruction in one of three backcountry skills courses, supporting two Thru Hikes or two multi-week Segment Hikes, tabling and presenting at one of four Trail Talks, chaperoning one of six Youth Backcountry Camps, or taking on special backstage projects, this well-oiled team engaged, inspired, and led 411 adults and 48 youth community members throughout the Tahoe Basin and beyond.

2016 Tahoe Rim Trail Challenge

W

orking the past six years with the Tahoe Rim Trail Association has been some of the most rewarding work I’ve had the pleasure of doing so far in my young life. The memories I have made with our remarkable members and volunteers have had a profound impact on who I am today. The inspiration which comes from watching

My time at the TRTA has shaped me into a hiker, backpacker and trail advocate. It also revealed strength within that was waiting to be discovered as I too took on hiking this amazing trail. The Tahoe Rim Trail Challenge program has also been inspiring watching families, individuals and teams come together these last four years to see what they’re made of.

Like all good things that eventually reach their maturity, I will be moving on to my next adventure as I travel back to my home state of Michigan. I hope my journey will one day bring me back to this beautiful place and wonderful trail family as this too is also “home.” Thank you for being a part of my journey and supporting such an outstanding organization who is a committed champion of the Tahoe Rim Trail.

ear four of the Tahoe Rim Trail Challenge was championed by nearly 535 outdoor enthusiasts! We kicked off this summer’s challenge on June 4th in honor of National Trails Day at Spooner Lake State Park. Nearly 200 people came and enjoyed educational talks by local partners, discovered and practiced Leave No Trace outdoor ethics through hands-on activities and hiked on local trails in the park. We’d like to congratulate all of our Trail Challengers for a job well done! We’ll be back next summer for the 5th Annual Tahoe Rim Trail Challenge with more trail to explore!
